#4 Bears Win Minnesota Invitational
Cal Takes Four Events On Final Day of December Event
MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 4 California men's swimming & diving team finished the Minnesota Invitational in style, winning four of the five events on Saturday at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. The Golden Bears swept the 100 freestyle and 200 butterfly and had the top two finishes in the 400-yard free relay.
Cal was the team champion with a score of 2,360 points. Arizona finished second with a score of 1,455 and was followed by host Minnesota with a score of 1345.5. The Bears received individual wins from Destin Lasco, Jack Alexy, and Dare Rose - with all three recording NCAA A qualifying times in their respective events.
Saturday's finals began with the timed final in the 1,650 free. The Bears placed two in the top five, with Jack Meehan finishing third with a time of 15:11.92. Tyler Kopp finished with a time of 15:13.90. Both were good enough for NCAA B-cut times.
Lasco and Keaton Jones went one and two in the 200 backstroke. Lasco, the defending national champion in the event, finished with a time of 1:38.34 - an NCAA A-cut time and the second-fastest mark in the NCAA this year. Jones set a new career-best with a time of 1:40.23, an NCAA B provisional time. Ziyad Saleem took fourth with a time of 1:41.69, followed by Colby Mefford who finished with a time of 1:41.96. Kai Crews finished seventh with a time of 1:43.09. All three times were good enough for NCAA B provisional times.
The 100 free was dominated by Cal. The Bears captured the top four spots, along with sixth and eighth places. Alexy finished with the fourth-fastest time in the country this year, touching the wall with a time of 41.41, an NCAA A-cut time. Bjorn Seeliger and Matthew Jensen finished second and third with NCAA B-cut times of 42.31 and 42.80, respectively. Robin Hanson took fourth with a time of 42.97 – narrowly missing an NCAA B-cut time. Dylan Hawk took sixth (43.37) followed by Roman Jones in eighth (43.53).
Jacob Soderlund and Liam Bell recorded NCAA B-cut times in the 200 breaststroke. Soderlund finished second with a time of 1:55.96, less than two-tenths of a second behind winner Max Matteazzi of Pitt. Bell finished in fourth with a time of 1:56.33. Hank Rivers placed eighth with a time of 1:59.49.
In the final individual event of the meet, Cal once again took the top three spots. Rose dropped 5.50 seconds from his prelims time to finish first with a time of 1:39.76. It is the third fastest time in the nation turned in this year and an NCAA A-cut time. Gabriel Jett finished well under his prelim swim with a time of 1:41.33. Aaron Shackell finished third with a personal-best time of 1:43.40, an NCAA B-cut time.
In the final event of the meet, the 400 free relay, Cal once again had the top two times. The Bears' A lineup of Alexy, Jensen, Jett, and Hawk finished with a time of 2:48.55 – the sixth fastest time in the country this season. Cal's B lineup of Seeliger, Lasco, Hanson, and Bell finished with a time of 2:48.88 which would be the ninth fastest time this season.
In the platform diving championships, freshman Geoffry Vavitsas finished second in the finals with a score of 341.20. Conrad Eck captured third with a score of 307.90, a zone-qualifying mark.
The Bears return to action in 2024 with back-to-back dual meets against Pac-12 foes Arizona and Arizona State on Jan. 19 and 20th at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

The White Sox At A Glance- The White Sox are up there with the Mets and Padres for most disappointing team this season. Chicago is (3-3) since the All-Star Break and finishes out a nine-game road trip this weekend in Minneapolis. The Sox are still nine games behind the Twins for first place and appear to be sellers as the trade deadline approaches. Tim Anderson has been hot with a .375 average in the second half. Andrew Benintendi is hitting .370 since the break. Jake Burger and Luis Robert each have four homers in July. Yoan Moncada is on a rehab assignment from a back injury. Andrew Vaughn is day-to-day with a foot injury. Liam Hendriks is working his way back from an elbow injury. Mike Clevinger has a biceps injury and hasn’t pitched since mid-June. Joe Kelly also has an elbow injury. The White Sox starting staff owns a 4.61 ERA, which is twentieth in baseball. The bullpen is even worse with a 4.66 ERA, which is twenty-sixth in MLB. Kendall Graveman has locked down eight saves in Liam Hendriks’ absence with Keynan Middleton and Gregory Santos getting higher leverage roles.
The Twins At A Glance- The Twins went (5-2) on their last West Coast swing of the year. The team won’t play a game later than 7:10 CST this year and returns home to a six-game homestand. Byron Buxton is 0-for-his-last-26 and got two days off in Seattle. He has either been pulling balls foul or swinging and missing in his at-bats. Eddie Julien has been hot with a .500 average, five homers, and seven RBI in the month of July. Jorge Polanco is in Omaha on a rehab assignment with the Saints. Jose Miranda received a plasma injection in his right shoulder and the Twins will see how his shoulder is in a week. Caleb Thielbar threw a 30-pitch bullpen session on Sunday in Oakland and is schedule to throw live batting practice on Saturday at home. Brock Stewart is further away than we hoped. The Twins pitching staff had a 4.87 ERA on the road trip and the offense made up for the pitching struggles. Since June 15th, Emilio Pagan has a 1.29 ERA with fifteen strikeouts over fourteen innings of work. He is getting higher leverage situations along with Jordan Balazovic and Oliver Ortega.
What To Watch For- The Twins took two of three from the White Sox in the first homestand of the year then the Sox won two of three in Chicago in early-May. This is the last series at Target Field between the two teams. Lance Lynn is (2-2) with a 4.50 ERA in nine starts against the Twins. Willi Castro has two homers off Lynn. Joe Ryan has a 1.80 ERA over ten innings versus the Sox. Dylan Cease is (4-4) with a 5.03 ERA in eleven starts versus the Twins. Max Kepler has three homers off Cease in his career. Sonny Gray is (5-2) with a 4.08 ERA in eleven games against the Sox. Lucas Giolito is (8-9) with a 3.88 ERA in twenty-two career starts against the Twins. Max Kepler has three career homers off Giolito. Carlos Correa and Michael Taylor have homered twice off Giolito. Bailey Ober is (2-1) 3.38 ERA in eight starts versus Chicago. Andrew Vaughn has taken Ober deep twice in his career. The Twins have some winnable games against a mediocre Sox team this weekend.

The silence between them isn’t uncomfortable, but it’s clear that Roman, at least, has more to say than he’s letting on.
Being seated in a bustling airport should make it easier to find conversation, and yet the cool and collected defenseman couldn’t be more at a loss. The worst part is that Isabel appears altogether unaffected by his lack of conversation. Maybe last weekend was all in his mind.
She sits just a chair away with her back to the large, glass window, hardly sparing a glance in Roman’s direction.
“You know,” she says after a moment, “I really don’t need you to stay. I think I can handle boarding the plane without you. You are… hereby absolved of babysitting duty. Promise I won’t tell my brother you left without watching the plane fly off.”

“Fuck.” Leaving his phone unlocked, atop the dining table, Liam comes to his feet, gathering the last of the breakfast dishes to add to the sudsy pile already soaking in the sink.
Roman, whose turn it is to do the dishes, chooses not to acknowledge Liam at first. It isn’t until curiosity gets the best of him that he manages the smallest glance in his friend’s direction. “I wash, you dry,” he says, nodding to the dry dish cloth on the other side of the sink. “What is it?”
“No, it’s nothing. I just realized that Isabel leaves tomorrow morning, and Oz asked me to pick him up for practice since his car is still out of commission for the rest of the week,” Liam says, setting the first dry dish off to the side. “Which means picking him up extra early to get Isabel to the airport on time and then us to practice right after, but I’ll work it out.” He shrugs.
“Oh, right. She’s leaving already?” The pause that follows is probably not as awkward as Roman makes it out to be. It’s just that his relationship with Isabel Wright is much more complicated now than it was a week ago when she arrived.
As one of Liam’s best friends, and his oldest friend from the team, he’s been around long enough to know Liam’s family. He’s even been to Minneapolis a couple of times, where he was introduced to the rest of the Wright family.
His mother had been kind and grateful. His father had been warm and welcoming. Isabel hadn’t been there, but it was hard to imagine how Liam and his background came to be in a home filled with so much love and support.
He met Isabel later, on one of the visits she made to Toronto to celebrate summer and the end of her semester, but the two of them never really spent time together until the wedding. It didn’t take long to get his reluctant plus-one talking, and he can’t believe how easily she talked him into dancing and enjoying the night in a way that he hadn’t thought about in years.
It was hard to leave that night. Not even knowing about her relation to Liam or her recent breakup made it easier. All he thought about after dropping the trio off at the house was what it might be like to stay and continue their conversation from the reception.
“I could… drive her? If that’ll help? Between the two, I’d rather do that than hear Oz talk about his car again, so.”

“I don’t mind waiting,” Roman says, shrugging. “I’ve never been a good liar, and you know he will ask if I stayed to watch the plane take off.”
“I didn’t think you could be cooerced into anything. For what it’s worth, I did tell him that I was just fine taking a cab, but―”
“Stubborn.”
Isabel grins, sitting up taller as she faces him. “Really stubborn. He means well, though.” As unnecessary as it is, he understands that her brother is only trying to make up for the years he lost himself to the thoughts and actions darkened by the shelter of his mind. “So why did you agree, then?”
Isn’t that a good question? She is right: he isn’t one to give in to pressure. Was it worth involving himself just for the chance to see her one last time? “He’s… my friend. And, honestly, after last night, I thought that he needed the break, and I hoped you wouldn’t mind.”
“No, no. I don’t mind. I guess I just thought that you might.”
Roman does his best not to show the disappointment in his expression, but the smile he dons when she looks back at him is tight. “I don’t. I meant what I said after the wedding. I had a good time.” He shrugs, glancing at his watch.

Sherrill also co-wrote many hit songs, including 'Stand by Your Man' (written with Tammy Wynette).
2010 - Don Henley
Don Henley reached an out-of-court settlement with Republican Senatorial candidate Chuck DeVore who used parodies of two Eagles' hits for an election campaign without permission. 'All She Wants To Do Is Dance' and 'The Boys of Summer' were used in campaign videos on YouTube as 'All She Wants To Do Is Tax' and 'Hope Of November'.
2007 - Lee Hazlewood
US singer, songwriter Lee Hazlewood died of cancer, in his home near Las Vegas aged 78. A benefit concert was held to raise money for Little Feat guitarist and singer Lowell George featuring members of his band plus Jackson Browne, Emmylou Harris and Bonnie Raitt.
1975 - Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant and his wife were both badly injured when the hire car he was driving spun off the road and crashed on the Greek island of Rhodes. Plant smashed both his ankle and his elbow, and was not fully fit for the best part of two years. A forthcoming North American tour had to be cancelled.
1968 - Newport Pop Festival
The second day of the two day Newport Pop Festival took place in Costa Mesa, California with Blue Cheer, Eric Burdon & The Animals, Grateful Dead, Illinois Speed Press, Iron Butterfly, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service and The Byrds. Over 100,000 fans attended the festival.
1967 - Monkees
A female Monkees fan stowed away on the bands plane between shows in Minneapolis and St Louis. The girl's father threatened to bring charges for transporting a minor across state lines.
1967 - Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd released their debut album The Piper At the Gates of Dawn on which most songs were penned by Syd Barrett. In subsequent years, the record has been recognised as one of the seminal psychedelic rock albums of the 1960s. When reviewed, by the two main UK music papers in the UK, Record Mirror and NME both gave the album four stars out of five. The album which was recorded at Abbey Road studios, London during the same time that The Beatles were recording Sgt. Pepper peaked at No.6 on the UK album chart and failed to chart in the US.
1963 - The Beatles
The Beatles appeared at the Queen's Theatre in Blackpool. So many fans crowded around the theatre, blocking every entrance, that The Beatles had to go through a construction area, up and across some scaffolding to the roof of the theatre, from where they were lowered through a trap door.
1962 - The Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones played the first of 22 weekly shows at Ealing Jazz Club in Ealing, London. They were known as The Rollin' Stones during this period.
1958 - Ricky Nelson
Billboard introduced 'The Hot 100 Singles Chart', Ricky Nelson was at No.1 with 'Poor Little Fool'.

Durden Named NCAA Men’s Swimming Coach Of The Year
Earns Top Honor For Seventh Time; 15 Bears Earn All-America Status
BERKELEY – For the seventh time in his career and second consecutive year, California head coach David Durden has been named the NCAA Men's Coach of the Year by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).
The award comes after Durden led the Golden Bears to their eighth all-time national championship and sixth in his 16-year tenure as Cal's head coach. The Bears also won team titles in 2011, '12, '14, '19, '21, and '22 while finishing among the top two teams at 13 consecutive national meets dating back to 2010.
Cal secured its second consecutive national championship at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, scoring 482 points and finishing ahead of runner-up Arizona State (430 points) and third-place Texas (384 points).
Durden has also been named the Pac-12 Men's Swimming Coach of the Year yet again. It is the sixth straight year and 12th time in a 14-year span that Durden has been named the conference’s COY. No other current college coach in the sport has won as many titles. Between Durden and the late Nort Thorton, Cal's head coaches have earned the award 16 times since 1978.
Additionally, the CSCAA also announced its 2022-23 All-Americans, including 15 Golden Bears (see below). All-Americans are selected on the basis of their finish at the NCAA Championships and team's current membership with the CSCAA. Only student-athletes who competed in their championship finals are eligible for All-America Honors.

Yes, because Liam would be 100% fine with them taking a picture of him and some other woman that he knows would go public while being 'engaged' to the teenager.

Honestly couldn’t agree with the both of you more. Lets go through the timeline, shall we?
Last time Liam and Maya were seen together being coupley (if you can even consider it that) was over a month ago in Texas with her family at a concert:
This was posted by her mother on the 24th, so it’d be safe to assume this would have occurred the with the last couple of days.
A few days later, Liam is in the Bahamas for a Crypto Convention to perform a set at a party:
The funny thing is that Maya was also in the Bahamas with her mother, but she doesn’t post a photo with Liam, nor is she spotted at the party.
She then posts photos of herself in the Bahamas with the ring missing from her finger:
Jump forward a couple weeks of silence and we get another post from Maya back in Texas, again with no ring, and no sign of Liam:
Then, last week she posts another lot of photos, again with no Liam, her hands prevalent - as if purposefully - in almost every photo with no ring to be seen:
People were already speculating in the comments that they had ended their relationship based on the lack of ring, considering how consistently she used to wear it and now it was nowhere to be found (probably back in her grandmother’s jewellery box where she found it in the first place).
Fast forward to this weekend where Liam is seen at another convention, this time in Minneapolis. We get videos of him clearly drinking and enjoying himself. That same night he posts this cryptic message to his story:
“New rules... never drink and pose or rather drink and post. I dunno you figure it out”
I agree with what @redandyellowziam has to say in this story. It’s clear that he’s trying to warn us that something shady is about to go down.
We also get photos of him out that night, clearly drinking and enjoying himself. But one person seems to stand out a little more than others:
A day later, we find out she’s another one of those American Instagram models (who was casted in his Familiar music video mind you, yet another easy set up) after she posts multiple stories with him making an appearance:
This is where shit hits the fan and I get incredibly pissed off at Maya.
A random account (which hasn’t been active since 2020) posts these photos and tags Maya in them, and she makes this comment:
People instantly jumped to her defence, and came to the conclusion that Liam was a horrible cheating scumbag with nothing more than this fucking comment to use as evidence.
Liam’s team finally have the brains to come to his defence and release this statement to the press:
Given that the last time they were seen together was a month ago, and the fact that she hasn’t been seen with her ring since, I think it’s fair to assume this was the timeline that was agreed upon.
My guess is that this was Maya’s last chance to really gain out of this “relationship” and she did it in the worst way possible - by spitting in the face of the very person who had to visibly suffer for her gain. She needed to come out of this looking like the good guy, and in order to do that, Liam needed to be the bad guy, the drunk and cheater.
So despite the fact that the ON was that they broke up last month, she used this ‘random’ post to her advantage and now has thousands of people believing her (34K people have already liked her comment made less than a day ago) that Liam cheated on her.
As if she was looking for ways to piss me off further, she posts a fucking ad on Instagram stories three hours after leaving that comment:
This bitch has people believing that she just found out that her fiancé was cheating on her with another woman and was devastated by the fact, all the while she’s posting ads for a fucking tequila company.
To make matters worse, her playing victim worked in her favour:
She had been losing thousands of followers every few days, and within the day that she posted that fucking comment, she gained 12K, because people lack the capacity to do basic research and just believe whatever they read.
Liam’s now confirmed new ‘girlfriend’ (where do they find these women??) also for some reason gained as well:
Gained 3K followers after posting those stories.
And, of course, the only person to lose in this situation was Liam:
Lost almost 10K followers in 24 hours.
To make matters even worse, they’ve just announced this new bitch as his girlfriend:
Hired paps to take photos of the “happy new couple”.
Not surprising that he is once again wearing shades to hide his eyes, and isn’t smiling in a single photo, and she’s doing all the work.
Why can’t they just let him be publicly single for one year? Why can’t he just be focusing on his music like you know... musicians are supposed to?
It’s just so fucking tiring at this point how often this same cycle repeats itself.
I think I speak for the lot of us when I say I am fucking done at this point.
Fuck Maya, fuck his team, and fuck this new chick.
