Ahhh I see "Watching a series" is another one of those colorful euphemisms for intercourse like "playing football" "netflix and chill" "eating ramyun" and our newly established "Workshop"

Liveblogging: Jane of Lantern Hill, Chapter 1.
This sounds very much like the beginning of The Blue Castle. Jane's situation seems similar to Valancy's in being continually repressed and "circumscribed", and Gay Street has a lot in common with Deerwood.
Uh oh. Mrs Kennedy sounds quite similar to Mrs Frederick!
Oh, Jane isn't very good at sports. First thing the protagonist and I have in common. Ding ding ding :D
So, Grandmother loves her daughter but detests her granddaughter. And dislikes her daughter loving her child. Wow. What's the poor kid ever done to her?
"You fuss entirely too much about her," grandmother had once said contemptuously, when mother was worried about Jane's sore throat. "She's all I have," said mother. And then grandmother's old white face had flushed. "I am nothing, I suppose," she said. "Oh, mother, you know I didn't mean that," mother had said piteously, fluttering her hands in a way she had which always made Jane think of two little white butterflies. "I meant...I meant...she's my only child..." "And you love that child...his child...better than you love me!" "Not better...only differently," said mother pleadingly.
This really is a terrible relationship to have, where you make people choose between another person and you! "Not better, only differently." People have different relationships, Gran! You'd think as a mother herself, she'd know that.
Grandmother is NOT a nice person at all.

93 (Quatre vingt treize, QVT) liveblogging or whatever it’s called
I hate Victor Hugo for all the damage he has done to my brain SO MANY SPOILERS (including Les Mis) BECAUSE HAHA I WENT IN KNOWING MY HEART IS GOING TO BE SHREDDED INTO PIECES The first part covers the first 1/3 of the book
The loose cannon! It’s a beautifully written part, I love how the theme of the book is being introduced. How does a creature battle the inorganic? How do men fight the unknown? Not just the peculiar individuals but also our irrational urges and the tides of time. The foreshadowing is also there: the gunner is rewarded for his heroics, and executed for his faults. We shall see how this theme is presented again and rediscussed in the latter parts of the book.
I really love the loose cannon concept so much, can you tell? It’s something so deeply grounded in human nature, an universal struggle that traverses time. In this theater called life, we may become simultaneously the cannon, the gunner, and the judge. What are the limits of the organic and the inorganic? What are the limits within our actions? A balance is needed, but difficult is it to reach.
The confrontation between Lantenac and Halmalo is a good demonstration of the norms of the late 18C! It is so important to remember that the whole idea of a Republic, the abolishment of monarchy, was radical in the late 18C. Halmalo also builds up the village massacre that is about to happen a few chapters later.
THE BEGGAR GUY. He too, is a loose cannon. As soon as he saves Lantenac, Hugo explains that this man cares little of the politics of the world, which while is similar to Michelle, is even more akin to Mabeuf. Both the Beggar and Mabeuf focuses on the natural world, and display a negligence towards the infighting of men. Both are then mercilessly affected by the politics they have chosen to withdraw from. It is clear that Hugo believes that politics is an inevitable matter as long as one belongs to the human race. The Beggar, who is even more isolated from the earthly desires than Mabeuf, cannot escape the fate that by saving Lantenac he has doomed hundreds of people. His choice of saving Lantenac was the loosening of the cannon, and upon his arrival of the village he becomes the gunner confronting the wrecked ship. (Also the parallel between the Beggar and Lantenac: both believe they are doing the Right thing that leaves corpses in their wake.)
The similarities Cimourdain and Enjolras shares. Both are priests of the Revolution, “Enjolras was a charming young man capable of being terrible” and “he must be either infamous or sublime”. LM displays how Hugo sees the revolution and human progress: it is sublime. 93 shows how the idea that ‘restriction must exist within revolution’ is reinforced is his mind after the Paris Commune. Enjolras claims himself a doomed man after the execution of Le Cabuc (boy is that scene erotic), and Cimourdain would doom himself as he condemns Gauvain.
I have mental damage from the introduction of Gauvain’s relationship to Cimourdain. The chapter title, ‘a corner not dipped into the Styx’, is yet another foreshadowing of what is to become of Gauvain. Victor is so good at this, giving subtle hints that will beat the living shit out of reader’s heart as we march towards the end. Are u ok V Hughes? Who has hurt you so deeply?

The best part about everyone trying to do a German accent for this Narrative Telephone is that the entire cast just ends up doing a better Jester impression than they were in the Jester episode.

Brickclub 1.5.12
I love a good menswear description!
Tumblr media
You too can look like an asshole, circa 1823.
I'm struggling to imagine trousers with 11 ribs. My guess is that the rib refers to a stripe of colour, military style, down the outside of the leg? Similarly, I'm struggling to visualise the fronts of this olive jacket. This makes sense, however, in that it's clearly supposed to look wacky, and plausibly therefore, not very much at all like a standard fashion plate or surviving garment.
It's not super clear whether Fantine - passing forwards and backwards - is soliciting; or being cold and hungry in a distracted way; or minding her own business.
We are told the fighters are "two beings hard to recognize as a man and a woman"; it's an interesting sentence, because most of this chapter is spent on descriptions. There's the strangeness, ugliness, and etherealness, of an ageless waif in a flower crown who turns into a panther; and there's the description of dandies which, I think, is intended as a another kind of "not quite human", both in the moral and in the general sense of them looking bizzare. They're easy to recognise, because Hugo just told you what they look like; they're just not easy to recognise as *human*.
The comparison to Tholomyès is given explicitly, and I suppose if Fantine's story is taken as a broader metaphor for the Problems Women Experience As A Whole, then it's Hugo double-underlining the sort of man who is to blame.
"Any richer and you’d call them dandies; any poorer and you’d call them layabouts." The casual politics of this interest me, because it's something already on my mind. My mood has improved somewhat since self-identifying as a gentleman of leisure rather than one of the unemployed. Still, I don't think the author is making a broader point here about the different ways unwork is perceived by class - it's "people who don't work, and are also a vapid waste of space", or "people who are like this, are like this regardless of how they dress", or I suppose even "boys like this will be boys like this"
The 1925 silent French adaptation has a gorgeous Fantine-in-her-flower-crown costume; and actually, I was reading about piecework in Victorian London the other day and about making fake flowers - I wonder if the flowers she's wearing are real or fake? Fake, I suppose, if it is snowing. Which I guess has all sorts of Persephone fallen into winter darkness imagery to it.
I long for a friskier moustache
