oh my gosh i just had an idea.
new headcanon that at some point Lockwood gives Lucy a very subtle, simple but beautiful circlet/headband made from pure, braided silver, for her to wear during cases when her Listening becomes too overwhelming/causes her pain. something like these:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in my mind the one he gives her is very thin but sturdy, since he knows she's not one for flashy finery.
he sees her getting headaches after tough cases, her exhaustion after extensive Listening, and how much trouble she has admitting that she's in pain, and he longs for a way to protect her.
and after flipping through one of his gossip mags one night and seeing a woman wearing a shining circlet around her head, he gets an idea.
he goes to a jewelry shop the next afternoon, under the pretense of running a few errands. he finds the perfect piece: a simple braided silver circlet, thin and elegant and beautiful but not gaudy. he tries to ignore how his heart pounds as he walks home with it concealed in his coat pocket, trying to think of how to give it to her.
he doesn't pluck up the courage until nearly a week later, when he and Lucy are on a case. dealing with two nasty, shrieking Phantasms in a very haunted house.
Lucy can barely swing her rapier, she's in so much pain. she's trying so hard to push through it, to ward off the vicious spirit in front of her. she needs help and she wants to call out for Lockwood, but he's cornered by his own Phantasm. at least, she thinks he is. she can barely comprehend her surroundings as her mind is battered on every side by the shrieking and wailing.
her vision's going blurry as she tries to block out the horrible psychic assault. she's vaguely aware of a flash of light in the direction where she last saw Lockwood. there are tears falling from her eyes as she struggles to stay standing. the Phantasm reaches for her with cold, mangled hands.
suddenly, Lockwood is there.
the spirit is driven back by his blade and retreats, still screaming.
Lockwood's hands are gently cupping Lucy's ears, brushing her hair back as he settles something around her head. his eyes are finding hers. he's saying her name, telling her something.
and the noise suddenly dulls.
not the sound of his voice. she can hear that clearly now as it brings her back. but the horrifying, painful voices that taunt and curse her from beyond the grave have faded into the background. the pain has stopped. Lucy stares at Lockwood in surprise as his hands fall from her face, brushing away her tears on their way down.
"An idea I had a little while ago. I thought it might help. I'm sorry I didn't give it to you sooner."
-
the little silver circlet doesn't nullify her Talent completely. in fact, it seems to clarify it, to drive out the overwhelming psychic clutter and allow her to Listen more fully without fear of pain.
she soon wears it almost constantly, and not only for the protection it offers her.

Lockwood and Co in Winter but make it cute
Headcanon that when there’s a day off for Lockwood and Co in the winter George takes it as an opportunity to go through and clean the kitchen only to find Celia’s old recipe book, to which he excitedly shows Lockwood.
Lockwood freezes because right there, in that book, are the favorite treats and meals of his childhood that he only ever got on special occasions.
Lucy and George decide to call Holly and Kipps and have a sort of group party/night off celebration where all the food is from that recipe book George found.
they try to keep it a secret from Lockwood (he’s suspicious anyways because why else would he not be allowed to even make his own tea in the kitchen. Why else can he not add to the thinking cloth-)
in the evening when it’s already dark because winter is built Like That, everybody presents Lockwood with what they’ve made and he’s so happy but still so melancholy because he knows it won’t be the same but he also knows there’s just as much love put into it, even with different people making it.
they all sit at the table ( that Holly probably set ) and spend at least an hour eating to fully treasure it. When they’re all done eating and the dishes have been washed, they all go to watch a movie together. Lockwood and Lucy are curled up together, sharing a blanket, and the others are scattered around as well.
maybe they all fall asleep like that, and make it a sleepover unintentionally, or maybe they go off separately to their respective beds/homes, but either way, they’re all content with how they spent their day off.

Yooo guys I just had a thought which is now headcanon:
After Lucy and Lockwood are married Lucy goes around calling Lockwood her wife (bc let’s be real he is her wife. They’re wives) and she encounters some homophobes who become iffy around her when she mentions she has a wife and then Lockwood turns up like ‘how goes it honey?’ and she turns around and says ‘meet my wife’

if you think lockwood's neurodivergent clap your hands*clap clap*
if you think lockwood's neurodivergent and it's why he can't figure out how to get over the death of his family and doesn't know how to let go of things he can't find an answer in and can't function unless he has a case to work on and doesn't know how to ask for/show affection in a way others understand and has mood swings and is impulsive and unpredictable and confusing and he just needs THE RIGHT KIND OF LOVE AND CARE and YOU JUST LOVE HIM SO DAMN MUCH CLAP YOUR HANDS

Lockwood & Co Headcanons
Sharing a bed with them
Tumblr media
George
- probably isn't a massive cuddler
- but will have one of his limbs flung over you to make sure you're still there
- he probably wakes up first most mornings, gazing at your blurry form until he remembers to put on his glasses
- there are always glasses of water next to the bed and you gotta be careful not to knock them over when getting in or out
- there's generally a couple of books at the end of the bed that George forgot to take back to the library
- before you fall asleep, he kisses the top of your head
- he definitely makes the bed every morning
Lucy
- one hundred percent a little spoon
- she likes to feel you wrapped around her, it helps her feel safe
- you probably end up breathing in her hair but it doesn't matter cos you're close to each other
- there's about a hundred teacups on the bedside table, most of them half full from drinking them before passing out
- she almost curls up like a cat, and when you don't spoon, you often end up with her on top of you, limbs splayed everywhere
- it's a tad warm but neither of you mind. you're close, you're safe, and you're relaxed
Lockwood
- big spoon. likes to know he's protecting you, even at night
- there's a thousand blankets on the bed, most of which get kicked off every night
- he still layers them on there though. just in case you get cold
- he doesn't sleep much but knowing that you're asleep in his arms help him to relax
- on the rare occasion that you wake up and he's fast asleep, you daren't move, not wanting to wake him
- he never makes the bed other than tossing the blankets back on it

So i was just thinking about my earlier lockwood post joking that his favorite hobby is asking Lucy if she's okay, and the amazing @ikeasupremacy commented that he does it because Lucy doesn't tell people when she's not okay. and I realized ...
Lockwood doesn't either. He does his absolute best to never show fear or doubt. He tries to never let on that his mental health is actually horrible.
he tries to do the things that no one ever did for him. he reassures Lucy constantly -- I have a plan, I'll take care of it, you're not alone, you're safe, we're right here -- saying all the words he longed to hear for years and years. He protects and cares for her the way no one did for him, the way he barely can for himself. He's filling the gap in his own heart. he never wants Lucy to have to feel like he did. he knows what it's like to feel horribly, desperately alone, and he's going to do his best to make sure she never does. he's going to fight for her, even though he had no one to protect him or defend him.
Tumblr media
for years he felt as though there was no one to care if he did disappear one night. there was no one to offer a trade, no one to willingly undergo pain for his survival. he never felt like he mattered that much.
and every are you okay? is a you matter to me. I care.
and now I'm crying. great.

Headcanon that Lockwood is a cat person (spoilers for The Hollow Boy below).
But since Jessica's death, he's never been able to keep a cat in Portland Row because cats can't stand the presence of Visitors.
Before Lockwood shows Lucy and George what's behind the door, he pretends not to like cats/be indifferent towards them. Because he can't have them asking questions about why he doesn't have one, if he likes them so much.
But then Lucy catches him feeding a few strays in the garden one day. It's obvious that he cares a lot about them (and that this isn't the first time he's done this). She's wildly curious, but she doesn't grill him about it. George eventually finds out too, and has the same reaction. Neither of them push Lockwood to explain, and both of them eventually start buying cat food and treats during their grocery trips. No questions asked.
And after Lockwood tells them about Jessica, everything makes sense.

anybody know that scene in Up where Muntz and Carl fight sword-to-walking-stick? Now all I can imagine is that when somebody breaks into Portland Row one night, Lockwood can’t reach any rapiers so George just. Tosses him a walking stick from the mess of his room and not only does Lockwood fend off an intruder with a walking stick but he WINS

Okay but. For anyone who's unfamiliar with the UK. Pop-up street funfairs are kind of a Thing here - they show up for carnivals and village fetes and shit and when you grow up in the middle of buttfuck nowhere like I did they might be the only entertainment you'll get all year, so you really come to love the atmosphere and the strobing lights and the pounding music and the nostalgia of better, easier, safer times.
And every year, in London, they have the Hyde Park Winter Festival, which is hands down the biggest pop-up funfair I've ever seen.
Anyway hc that the year Lucy runs away to London, Lockwood and George take her to the festival. It's George's idea - she is from the Barbarous Wastes Oop North, Lockwood, she's probably never seen a funfair before, and she does gasp and go all wide-eyed every time their taxi drives past it - and Lockwood pays, because his house might be mortgaged to the hilt, he might be practically a serf, but he's the boss and he's pretty sure he still owes George a tenner anyway for those beers, so, whatever -
And it's just a whole thing for Lucy because she's never really been treated before. Everything she's needed since she was thirteen came out of her Jacobs' wages. Her mum never spent a penny on her that wasn't absolutely necessary, and begrudged her even that. So she's always had to be a penny-pincher, always had to deny herself fun things because her wages were being spent on essentials or frittered away on pints of Fosters, and being able to do whatever she likes purely for her own pleasure is utterly foreign to her.
And he doesn't make her feel bad for it. For wanting to have fun for once. Neither of them do. George spouts useless facts about when rides were invented and the origins of ice skates, and sometimes puts his fingers in his ears with a grimace, but when she grins at him, he grins back. Lockwood plays the yes-man for her all evening, eyes twinkling when she hangs off his arm or pulls him over to see something by the wrist. He stumps up for candyfloss, for sweetie cones, for fresh donuts and hook-a-duck and the shooting gallery, because "You were looking at it like you wanted it." She has three goes on a claw machine trying to get a particular stuffed dog, and then Lockwood has a go, before George finally wins it for her. And she loves them so much, these boys who put her first more than her own family ever did.
She falls asleep on Lockwood's shoulder in the taxi on the way home. Mostly. She dozes, at least. She's still vaguely cognizant of what's going on around her - the low hum of the radio, the pulse of the taxi's engine, George's voice when he leans around her and says, "I didn't realise you noticed that thing she does."
She's been faintly aware of Lockwood's arm around her shoulders since he put it there, when she started listing drowsily into his side, but she hadn't noticed his thumb idly petting back and forth until it stills. "Thing? What thing?"
"The thing," says George helpfully. "Where she looks at things like she wants them but she knows she can't have them."
Lockwood snorts. It's a small, derisive sound, probably accompanied by an eye roll. "I'd make a pretty piss-poor agent if I hadn't. She does it at lots of things."
"Oh." George seems to muse on that for a second. Then, "Just you never seem to notice when she does it at you."
Lockwood goes very still, for a second. Clears his throat, just quietly. His arm jostles her a bit; she thinks he's fussing with his cufflinks, which he seems to do a lot ever since he started wearing them in the first place. His voice is warm, though. "Shut up, George."
"Yes, boss." Irreverent. Grinning, probably.
With her face tucked into his shoulder, Lucy smiles, and lets herself drift.

So here's the first entry to "A Guide on How to Recklessly Run an Agency of Your Own".
This contribution is written by Lucy - who else could write about job interviews?
As scribbled comments are more the welcome in the book (just like the thinking cloth) it took me ages to find handwriting types for everyone...
