Do we know if they have new producers/show runners this season? It doesn’t seem like Tim is involved anymore because he’s promoting LS only. And this season just isn’t their usual formula.
“It was just a funny coincidence,” says co-showrunner Kristen Reidel with a laugh. Instead of a portal back to prehistoric times, the 9-1-1 disaster is caused by an underground oil-well explosion that craters a downtown L.A. street—swallowing a woman taking her driving test. “Our inspiration here was really, have you ever wished the earth would open up and swallow you whole? OK, now, what if it did?” (source) I can also tell you that we've been introduced to four new directors this season: Ben Hernandez Bray -> 5x03 Paula Hunziker -> 5x06 (hostage episode) Kristin Windell -> 5x07 James Wong -> 5x08 + a new writer last night 🥴 Ian Sobel (This is the eighth tv series he's worked on, fifth time as the script developer)

I found some old @therocket90s - actually 1988/89 Central Tavern gig schedules - however, if you look at them closely, all 3 show Alice N’ Chains, not “in” Chains. I’ve added the real gig poster from the 4/1/89 show - the design is of the old N’Chains design with the rose & chain. I have 2 older posters from an’ Chains era - maybe that’s where the confusion is. But I did double check with my good friend James Bergstrom @jamesber777 (original N’ Chains drummer) who also confirmed that they never played at the Central; only JC, MS, LS & SK did! Still somewhat interesting to see these misprints! 2018 Senior Bowl roster: Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen lead big list of NFL prospects
Tumblr media
NFL scouts will be well represented at college football’s biggest All-Star Game.
For an NFL team at the top of the 2018 NFL draft, there is only one game left to pay attention to this winter — and it’s not the Super Bowl. Scouts and executives alike will be focused on the 2018 Senior Bowl thanks to a lineup of star prospects like Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen, and Da’Shawn Hand.
This year’s crop of quarterbacks is Saturday’s headliner in Mobile, Ala. Mayfield, the Heisman winner, was watched closely throughout the week of practice as teams try to judge whether his prodigious playmaking will translate from the Big 12 to the NFL. Despite speculation that he wouldn’t play Saturday, Mayfield is expected to be out there on the field.
Allen has even more questions to answer — while his 6’5 frame and big arm have made him a favorite among draft prognosticators, his 16-11 record at Wyoming and inability to perform against Power 5 competition raise doubt about his ability to lead a franchise.
Washington State’s Luke Falk was at practice all week, but he withdrew from the Senior Bowl to attend the funeral of teammate Tyler Hilinski.
Other familiar passers Nebraska’s Tanner Lee and Virginia’s Kurt Benkert used this week to try to state their cases as potential draftees as well.
Saturday’s game will also provide an opportunity for some smaller-school standouts to prove they belong. UTSA pass rusher Marcus Davenport has been projected as a mid-first-round pick, but a strong performance against the nation’s top blockers could be his ticket into the top 10. Cornerbacks like Dubuque’s Michael Joseph and Weber State’s Taron Johnson will look to prove they have the strength and athleticism to hang with a higher level of competition.
And then there are the proven stars who have to show they’re more than just top-tier NCAA athletes. San Diego State tailback Rashaad Penny led the FBS in rushing yards this season and will try to show scouts he’s just as dangerous as Saquon Barkley or Derrius Guice. Other standouts like Troy Fumagalli, Harrison Phillips, James Washington, and Dewey Jarvis will look to have a similarly productive day.

Smooth Roll Out of Restaurant365 at BLCO’s 29 KFC, Taco Bell and A&W Locations Kicks Off Efficiency Gains
Background
With more than 30 years in the franchising business, C21 Group/BLCO Enterprises has grown into managing 29 KFC, Taco Bell and A&W franchise locations across Canada and parts of the U.S., employing more than 700 people. The company aims to serve its communities better by upgrading its current stores as well as building and acquiring new stores. C21 Group/BLCO is dedicated to community giving, participating in KFC’s Add Hope and Our Harvest programs by donating surplus food that is safe to eat to local hunger relief organizations. True to its vision to be a “big-hearted company for our customers, for our employees, and our shareholders,” C21 Group/BLCO strives to be the best franchise manager in Canada and the U.S.
if (typeof(gem_fix_fullwidth_position) == "function") { gem_fix_fullwidth_position(document.getElementById("vc_row-5ef655d86eace")); }
Challenge
As C21 Group/BLCO worked to streamline its accounting and operations across 29 locations and multiple divisions, the company realized that scaling its QuickBooks Desktop system created an extremely inefficient workflow.
Sarah Ballard, director of finance and a Certified Public Accountant, explained that C21 Group/BLCO was using many different sources of information that needed to be transferred into QuickBooks manually, from the store point-of-sale (POS) to other store operational software.
The accounting team spent hours daily and monthly doing cash reporting from the stores, entering journal entries manually, and “paper checking” everything out. The office was also juggling invoices coming from email, mail, and fax, on top of troubleshooting late invoice deliveries and wrong addresses. Bank reconciliation took approximately 18-20 hours a week, and month-end close was an extensive, time-consuming process that frequently wasn’t completed until four weeks after month end. Even after these accounting tasks were completed, Ballard wasn’t convinced of the accuracy of the information she was getting from manual data entry.
Solution
When asked what she was looking for in an accounting solution, Ballard was clear: “definitely reduce the amount of data entry we were doing and reduce the resources and time spent on our extensive number of invoices.” Also on her wish list were consolidation, detailed reports, a fixed asset tracker, and an accounting solution that integrated smoothly with the POS system.
Ballard decided to try Restaurant365, an all-in-one, cloud-based platform built to help restaurant operators run their businesses more efficiently and profitably. The restaurant-specific solution offers robust accounting products, like bank reconciliation, as well as tools like fixed asset tracking, custom financial reporting, and full integration with POS systems, food and beverage vendors, and banks.
C21 Group/BLCO had recently acquired four restaurants in a standalone company that had yet to be folded into the main company, and Ballard decided this was the perfect way to test R365. With the help of one of R365’s implementation specialists, Restaurant365 was up and running in all four restaurants in less than three weeks.
“I’ve done a lot of implementations over the years in my career, all kinds of them,” said Ballard. “Patty Hernandez at R365 is probably the best implementation specialist that we’ve ever had.” Ballard also credits the dedication from her C21 Group/BLCO team. “Everybody was excited to get it up and running, knowing that it would make their jobs a lot more productive.”
Ballard shared an email she wrote to a peer after switching to R365, saying,
“I honestly cannot say enough good things about our installation and user experience. Our operations team as well as our accounting team are very happy with the information being provided from R365. We are so excited to dive into using the system more extensively. The intercompany benefit is worth it alone.”
if (typeof(gem_fix_fullwidth_position) == "function") { gem_fix_fullwidth_position(document.getElementById("vc_row-5ef655d86fc6a")); }
Results
Now with 29 active locations on Restaurant365, Ballard is seeing major gains in efficiency in both accounting and operations.
Ballard said the biggest payoff from R365 so far has been the sheer hours saved through the accounting solution. Using Restaurant365 has saved the accounting team:
Roughly 20 hours per month for bank reconciliation (because it is now automated)
20 hours per month for P&Ls (because an accountant no longer needs to key data by hand from QuickBooks into an Excel sheet)
At least 10-20 hours per month from streamlining AP (because of the R365 integration with Sysco)
Ballard estimates the team is already saving in excess of 50 hours a month with R365 but is looking forward to the full implementation and training rollout to the entire company, “I anticipate that time savings to grow.”
if (typeof(gem_fix_fullwidth_position) == "function") { gem_fix_fullwidth_position(document.getElementById("vc_row-5ef655d86fe56")); }
As director of finance, Ballard is finding R365 an invaluable tool for her own responsibilities. Last year, Ballard estimates she spent about 100 hours doing budgets, because she had to manually enter numbers into QuickBooks when the import from Excel wasn’t possible. When Ballard used R365 this year, she estimates “it took me about 10 hours—so that’s just 10% of the time.”
In addition, “the intercompany is phenomenal,” said Ballard. With multiple companies in Canada that do a lot of intercompany transfers, C21 Group/BLCO is now able to condense transfers into one entry, versus going in and out of multiple entities to ensure they’re all in balance at the end of the month and year.  “Now, we just plug in which company we want it to go to per location, and R365 does it right automatically; there’s no need to go back and rebalance, which is a huge time saver,” said Ballard. And with Restaurant365 integrations throughout the entire company, C21 Group/BLCO is able to streamline reporting both by selecting the entities to include in a report using the same chart of accounts, and also through consolidated forecasting.
if (typeof(gem_fix_fullwidth_position) == "function") { gem_fix_fullwidth_position(document.getElementById("vc_row-5ef655d870349")); }
Ballard also appreciates the fixed asset tracking in R365. She said that previously, her franchise locations spent money “willy-nilly” on repairs, with the mentality that repair is cheaper than replacing. She found that QuickBooks wasn’t able to track the age of equipment and how often repairs were happening. Now that she has starting using fixed asset tracking within R365, she reported, “I think in year end and month end, we will be able to do more accurate amortization of our assets.”
Although Ballard originally saw Restaurant365 as mostly an accounting tool, she is finding that her operations team can also benefit from the restaurant management system. Recently, Ballard recounts, when posting the weekly count, she noticed that the director of operations had gone through the accounts and noted the inventory that was over-ordered or too low. “I think these trends were becoming more and more visible to them,” she said, “So I anticipate we’re going to be seeing some significant cost savings there.”
She also takes advantage of R365 for controlling costs. “Now that we have more accurate budget data, we’re able to look for variances and make sure that we have more accuracy in what we’re doing. We’re identifying things for us to start looking at, as far as cost reduction, and sending those out to the managers in a timelier fashion. They are actually able to access it in their modules, and I believe it will give them more visibility into controlling costs.”
if (typeof(gem_fix_fullwidth_position) == "function") { gem_fix_fullwidth_position(document.getElementById("vc_row-5ef655d87081f")); }
Because of POS integration with restaurant software, store managers are able to look at real-time financial data, like P&L, at least a few times a week—far more often than before. Previously, “the data was so old that it really was not impactful. We weren’t able to action anything,” said Ballard. Now, managers and operations are able to see labor accruals, frequent P&Ls, and sales forecasts versus their labor, enabling them to make changes sooner rather than later.
The overall results of Restaurant365, according to Ballard?
“Definitely much better efficiency in our accounting staff—using them for more detailed analysis versus data entry. We definitely have more accurate and timely information than we’ve ever had. Everybody seems to be really excited to use the information that we’re providing to make better decisions and cost savings.”
As she finishes the rollout to the rest of C21 Group holdings, Ballard is excited to explore other Restaurant365 inventory, labor, and reporting tools. C21 Group/BLCO chose Restaurant365 for many of the accounting features, but the software has impressed Ballard most with the streamlined implementation process. When asked about her experience with the Restaurant365 team, Ballard said, “our success has been foremost in their minds. It’s just been a fantastic experience and I would love to share that with as many people as I can.”

Felicia Douglass (now a touring member of Dirty Projectors) worked with percussion and sampler, Julian Fader experimented with synths, nearly every band member ran the computer during recording sessions, and Becca Kauffman (aka performance artist Jennifer Vanilla) composed her first song for the group “On Its Side the Fallen Fire,” a deeply layered orchestral piece of Kate Bush grandeur meets Julia Holter reverie. Compared with previous Ava Luna albums, Moon 2 has fewer sharp turns into dissonance, fewer celebratory guitar parts, none of Hernandez’s signature screams. Nevertheless, the infectious buoyancy of “Deli Run” and “Walking With an Enemy,” are warm and bright, and songs like “Centerline” and “Set it Off” venture confidently into pop territory. The title track, painting the elation and tumult of a crush, is set against a swaggering reggae bassline and warbling Kraftwerk synths. “Every sci-fi movie has a nightclub. These are the songs in that nightclub," says Kauffman. New Post has been published on http://lshawker.com/the-drowning-game-super-secret-facts/
THE DROWNING GAME Super-secret Facts
The original title of THE DROWNING GAME was DEEP FORBIDDEN LAKE, after the Neil Young song, which is why it’s included in the soundtrack. I see that song playing over the end credits of the movie.
Petty’s dogs, Sarx and Tesla, are so named because I mention Tesla in every book I write as a tribute to my husband Andy. Sarx is the Greek word for “flesh.” A pastor named Bob talked about his mentor who, whenever Bob started acting squirrelly, would say, “Down, Sarx! Down!” I always wanted to name a dog Sarx, so now I have.
Other dog facts: Uncle Curt’s bulldog, China Cat Sunflower, is named after Grateful Dead song. This is a reference to a previous novel I wrote that takes place thirty years earlier in which Curt is a major character. Curt owns a hound dog in that one named after another Grateful Dead song.
Randy King is based on my friend Marianne’s ex who grabbed me by the face and pushed me down in the street one time when he was drunk.
Saw Pole and Niobe are fictional Kansas towns, modeled after the real towns of Barnard and Lincoln respectively.
“Saw Pole” in the Kiowa Indian language means “Owl.”
The bra knife that Petty carries is a 160 Smidgen Buck knife. When I got my book contract, I gave one to each of the members of my critique group, Because Magic, as well as my agent, Michelle Johnson of Inklings Literary Agency, as a thank-you gift.
Dekker’s band name “Disregard the 9” was inspired by my friend Andrew Weygandt. He sent me a text once, at the end of which he accidentally typed a 9. His followup text said, “Disregard the 9.”
Autopsyturvy, the band Disregard the 9 is set to open for, comes from a trivia team name invented by Nick and Lauren Hernandez.
Dekker’s grandma Oma is based on my grandmother, Mildred Ross, who lived in Lincoln, Kansas.
Petty was inspired by my youngest, Layla, who had just been diagnosed with autism the month I began work on THE DROWNING GAME. Although Petty herself is not autistic, much of her social awkwardness and confusion at life outside her father’s house is based on autistic characteristics.
Petty was the first female protagonist I ever wrote. I started writing from the male perspective when I was in college and couldn’t seem to stop injecting myself into all my female characters (although they were always a smarter, better-looking, cooler version of me). My friend Marc Graham coined the term Dick Lit to describe the sub-genre of the novels I wrote pre-DROWNING GAME.
Detective Deirdre Walsh (pronounced DEER-dree) is named after my friend Deirdre Byerly, whose favorite guitarist is Joe Walsh.
The Offender TV shows Petty is always watching are fictional versions of the Law & Order franchise.
Detective Deirdre Walsh is a thinly veiled homage to Detective Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) of Law & Order: SVU.
The memory Petty describes
Mom’s telling me to “Look! Look!” and she’s pointing at a little TV to our right. And just as I look, these snow-topped mountains pop up on that TV like toast, and I’m amazed.
is based on one of my earliest memories. I was three years old. My parents, my sister, and I boarded a plane at Denver’s old Stapleton Airport, and after it took off, it banked and the mountains seemed to pop up in the window. I didn’t understand at the time what caused that magical phenomenon.
In another of Petty’s early childhood memories, she’s eating a peanut butter-and- mayonnaise sandwich. That was my favorite sandwich as a kid.
The establishments in Salina that Petty and Dekker visit—Nick’s Pawn Shop and Knucklehead’s Tavern—are real places.
Petty and Dekker’s evasion of the police is based on a true event. (I plead the fifth.)
Curt and Rita’s farmhouse in Wamego is based on my friends Tama and Kevin Wagner’s rental during my time in small-market radio in Manhattan, KS.
The radio station that Roxanne and Petty listen to, KQLA, was the first radio station I ever worked at.
Roxanne’s supermoon story is based on an experience I had as a kid.
Two of Curt’s daughters are named after mine, Chloe and Layla, although they never appear onstage.
The third daughter, Roxanne, is of course named after the song by The Police. She is also modeled after my oldest daughter, Chloe.
The church where Petty’s folks were married in Greenwood Village, Colorado, is the same one Andy and I were married in.
Petty reads in one of the letters about a box turtle who had a hole drilled in its shell so it could be chained to a porch. This is a true story. (But I didn’t do it.)
The tornado sequence is based on my experience driving across Nebraska where a tornado touched down within a mile of where I was. My car didn’t rise in the air, but the rest of it is right on the money.
The storm chaser who picks up Petty and Dekker is modeled after one of my college boyfriends.
Motel 9 in Denver is a real place.
Paiute, Colorado, is not.
The Black Star Mine is loosely modeled on the Climax molybdenum mine near Leadville, Colorado, but is not abandoned or contaminated, and is in fact a working mine.
Petty’s mother is named for my friend Marianne Goulding.
The original idea for this book began around 2002. An acquaintance mentioned that her mother had passed away when she was young, and I asked if it was cancer. She said, “No, my mom was stalked, kidnapped, and murdered.” This acquaintance was ethereally beautiful, and I thought at the time, I’ll bet her mom was just as beautiful, and some psycho nutbag saw her and decided he was going to have her. I filed this story away in my brain until 2012, when I read about a journalist who lost his father when he was a kid. He’d always been told that it was a heart attack, but as an adult, he found out that his dad had actually been the victim of a mafia hit. The journalist went on a journey to find out exactly what had happened to his dad. I put those two stories together and the result is THE DROWNING GAME.

David Norton’s turbocharged 2002 Lincoln: What a Luxury Performance Car Should Be
David Norton’s 900-horsepower wide-body Lincoln LS is an “if only” car. Imaginary auto executives fantasize, “if only they would let me build cars like that, I could fix Lincoln!” New car dealers dream, “if only they would ship me some of those, I could charge double the MSRP!” And the tetchy bean counters, anonymous committee persons, and bus-riding bureaucrats gleefully posit, “if only I could veto such outrageous, expensive engineering excess!”
Showroom-stock 2000 to 2006 Lincoln LS sedans did not typically spark such passionate thoughts. Sharing the DEW98 platform and engines with a forgettable Jaguar in Ford’s ill-fated Premium Auto Group (and in 2002-05 with the flaccid revival of the two-seat boulevardier Ford Thunderbird), the Lincoln LS was supposed to make a generation of young Europhiles forget about decades of Continental Mark-series mobile isolation chambers.
Although the LS triggered a round of nasty attorney letters between Toyota and Ford over whether anyone would confuse it with Lexus LS400s, the car did too little to shake young junior executives and fashion-plates out of their 5-series BMWs. In an age when average soccer moms wanted high-riding equipment for the Rubicon trail, and dads wanted to pretend the daily traffic jam was on the King Ranch, the underpowered Lincoln LS just never broke through the clutter. Then, as part of Ford’s “Way Forward,” the no-fun committee bureaucrats and penny-pinching bean counters killed it in favor of a cheaper, V8-less, front-wheel-drive Ford platform.
An LS was not David Norton’s first choice for a souped-up Lincoln. Norton, proprietor of SPEC Clutch in Bessemer, Alabama, has a history of building hot road-course iron, including a wide-body Porsche 944 turbo, a 700-horsepower Nissan 240, and an equally powerful BMW 135. Yet his initial conception for a “hot rod Lincoln” trended more toward Kennedy Continentals. “I sought but could not find a decent mid-‘60s coupe,” Norton reported.
Norton switched his attention to the lithe Lincoln LS. Norton admired the lines of Helmuth Schrader’s German-inspired design. “These chassis have a good wheelbase and rigidity for handling bigger power, and feature a 50/50 weight distribution,” Norton explained. Another advantage was that Norton found a one-of-2,331 LS equipped with a Getrag 221 five-speed manual transmission, which reduced the amount of fabrication necessary to fit the TKO600 gearbox behind the turbocharged Terminator DOHC V8 that the car should have had to start with.
An old friend who had been part of a defunct effort to campaign a Lincoln LS in Sports Car Club of America World Challenge racing supplied the final parts of the design. Norton took some broken, one-off fiberglass body components and shirt monogram artwork left over from the racing project, and had the wide-body design revamped for molding in featherweight carbon fiber. Norton’s team added a new carbon fiber hood, doors, bumpers and side skirts to complete “what we imagined a race car would look like.”
The final result is hotter than anything Bill Stroppe, Fran Hernandez, and Clay Smith came up with back when Ford could be bothered to actually race Lincolns. “It is very reliable and handles power better than ever imagined,” Norton said. “It is easy to drive, gets great fuel mileage, and is comfortable. Just what one would expect from a Lincoln.” It is an “if only” car indeed – with no Mathew McConaughey stream of consciousness existentialism necessary.
Tech Notes
Who: David Norton What: 2002 Lincoln LS Where: Bessemer, AL
Engine: Woodstock, Ontario, Canada’s Sean Hyland literally wrote the book on Modular Ford V8 performance (How to Build Max-Performance 4.6-Liter Ford Engines (Cartech, 2003)), so when Norton decided to consign the powerless Jaguar AJ 3.0 V6 to the wastelands, Sean Hyland Motorsports (SHM) got the call. In the end, SHM supplied a balanced 0.020-over Ford Terminator DOHC V8, displacing 283 cubic inches. A quartet of SMH 2723 camshafts, featuring 0.482/0.470 lift and 225/235 degrees of duration at 0.050-inch, conduct the battle symphony from atop ported SHM race four-valve heads with 52cc chambers. From the inside, the SHM Terminator block houses an OEM forged Ford crankshaft, Manley Pro Series I-beam rods, and boost-friendly Manley 11cc dish pistons. ARP head studs clamp down MLS head gaskets from the rebellion of 25 pounds of turbo boost. A mid-frame Borg Warner S400 75mm turbocharger, exhaling into a Sullivan EFI intake manifold brings Norton’s Terminator one step closer to serious horsepower. Breaking the habit of detonation, boost is chilled through a custom charge air cooler based on a Spearco core. Custom stainless steel 1.5-inch primary headers supply spent gas drive to the turbo. A Big Stuff 3 engine controller barks electronic orders to ID1050x injectors, dual Turbosmart Compgate 40 wastegates, and crank-triggered LSx coils on MSD Power Grid brackets. NGK TR6 spark plugs touch off the power making conflagrations. With an Evans water pump, SPAL dual 11-inch electric fans, and a Mocal oil cooler, Norton is less likely to burn it all down. Squelching unwanted sounds are a pair of Borla Shootout mufflers on 3.5-inch stainless steel exhaust pipes.
Transmission: Norton pulled a SPEC PT Trim Super Twin clutch and SPEC forged billet aluminum flywheel from his company’s stock and surrounded them with a Quicktime bellhousing. The SPEC clutch feeds the outpouring of SHM turbo power to a Pro Motion TKO 600 five-speed manual transmission, into a Driveshaft Services custom 4-inch driveshaft.
Rearend: Instead of waiting for the end of the light duty, OEM independent rear suspension, Norton had Barry Trivette and Harry Robinson of Robinson Racing Enterprises fabricate a custom four-link and Panhard bar, and fit in a lightweight Moser 9-inch Ford axle. The husky axle contains 3.50:1 final drive and hardened Moser axles.
Suspension: QA-1 Coilovers suspend all four corners of Norton’s Lincoln. Spherical links and polyurethane bushings firm up the OEM front and rear sway bars. The balance of the suspension and steering are Lincoln Wixom factory-issue.
Wheels/Tires: Stanley Chen of Toyo Tires supplied wide Toyo Proxes T1R tires in 235/35R19 (front) and 315/25R19 (rear) sizes to Norton’s wide-body project. Vincent Wong of I-Forged Wheels provided I-Forged Fortune 19×9.5 and 19×12 wheels to replace the spindly 17×7 Lincoln LS stockers.
Paint/Body: Lincoln ran out of clever names for the clearcoat black hue that cloaks the iridescent, custom dry carbon fiber wide body built by Goolsby Customs of Bessemer, AL. No castle of glass, the LS dry carbon fiber body parts are as much as 70% lighter than even lightweight wet carbon fiber without leaving out any strength. Goolsby Customs relocated the rear door jams to fit the Lincoln’s new wide look. A Fuel Safe fuel cell with a Sparco locking fuel door keeps the hydrocarbons-in-waiting secure.
Interior: Most “if only” enthusiasts will view the inside of Norton’s Lincoln as “somewhere I belong.” Augmenting the factory Lincoln leather-lined luxury is a custom Dakota Digital instrument package integrated into the OEM cluster. A Clarion NX706 head unit with an Arc Audio XDi 1200.6 amplifier, Arc Audio 6.2 and 5.2 components and two Arc Audio XDi 12D4 subwoofers, helping the listeners go numb. Danny Smith of Bessemer, AL handled the wiring. An Optima Yellow Top battery and a 1999 SVT Cobra alternator loose the juice for the entertainment system.
Performance: The potency of Norton’s Lincoln LS is not for the faint, with 900 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 825 lbs/ft of torque at 5,500 rpm available at the wheels. Off-boost fuel economy checks in with a miserly 17 city/26 highway mpg. Top speed is drag limited to an estimated 200 mph.
