Pokemon Card of the Day #2511: Lurantis (SM Promo #25)
Tumblr media
Most cards that were Promo cards and not also released in a set didn’t see much play. There were, of course, exceptions, with the most infamous example being the Tropical Beach card that was only available at World Championships yet was required for certain decks in the early 2010′s to even function. Most others were just for collectors, which was generally good to keep decks from becoming more expensive than they already were. Lurantis had a chance to be one of the successful ones, as it helped boost power for some already solid Pokemon. While it wasn’t going to be too hard to get (its release was in a rather easy to get product), such things had seen success in the past and Lurantis did get a bit of attention when it was first released.
100 HP wasn’t particularly special for a Stage 1, and there were plenty of attacks that could KO a Lurantis if a player wanted to target it. It would rarely be the most important thing to deal with at any given time, but was still worth noting. The Fire Weakness, due to the somewhat low HP, didn’t mean too much. All of the common Fire-types available could reach 100 damage rather easily. The Retreat Cost, at 2, meant that a deck using it would probably want a way around paying it if the card was stuck as the Active Pokemon for whatever reason.
Sunny Day was an interesting Ability, making sure that the attacks of the player’s Grass-type and Fire-type Pokemon did 20 more damage to the opponent’s Active Pokemon. Those types did have some common attackers. Grass had Golisopod-GX, Decidueye-GX, and Tapu Bulu-GX, while Fire had the likes of Volcanion and Volcanion-EX, Ho-Oh-GX, Salazzle-GX, Turtonator-GX, and Reshiram & Charizard-GX to work with. Lurantis could help hit a few good numbers with the extra 20, especially when stacked with other damage help. Ho-Oh-GX, for example, could KO a Gardevoir-GX with Phoenix Burn with Lurantis support if it had a Choice Band attached. Some other Pokemon, such as Golisopod-GX, didn’t hit many extra important numbers, though the extra chip could still be useful in some spots. Lurantis was an attempt to give Grass and Fire decks the same type of help Fighting got with Regirock-EX, and it could be quite nice.
Solar Beam wasn’t as good as anything Lurantis could support. 80 damage for 3 Energy did look worse than it really was, as Sunny Day made that actually hit for 100. You’d still look for other Grass-types if using that sort of deck, though Lurantis could do some decent damage in a pinch.
Lurantis, at least in theory, was rather useful. 20 extra damage really could matter sometimes, especially for some of the strong Fire-types that could potentially break through the bulkier Pokemon-GX with the extra help. Being a Stage 1 that didn’t get some other Pokemon to hit numbers as often as you’d hope for was why it only saw a little bit of play. Playing Lurantis was an attempt to target certain decks you’d expect to see. If you thought your deck would often fall 10-20 damage short of a big KO, Lurantis was a great option if you already had the problem after including Choice Band. If this was less of an issue, you left it out. That made Lurantis a typical niche option for deck building.

So I did an analysis of my “Catch ‘Em All” Pokemon Card Binder...
...in order to determine what cards I had and what cards I needed. The point of the “Catch ‘Em All” binder is to have at least 1 of every single Pokemon there is - not to complete sets or hunt holos or “ex”s or “EX”s or “GX”s or full arts or whatever. I just one one of all 893* Pokemon. (*there are 893 pokemon as of this writing.)
The thing is, I want the “original sets” for generations 1-3. That is to say, I don’t need ALL of EVERY set from gens 1-3, but I want the cards to be of the original sets. So for generation 1** that is: Base, Base 2, Fossil, and Jungle. For generation 2** that is: Neo Destiny, Neo Genesis, Neo Discovery, and Neo Revelations. For generation 3 that is the four sets in the e-series, and the 17 sets in the ex ruby and sapphire series.
(**I am also collecting the WoTC Black Star promos from gen 1, the Rocket set from gen 1, and the Southern Islands set from gen 2. These are in my collections binder, however, not my Catch ‘Em All binder. I will likely go on to collect the Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge sets after finishing Team Rocket and Southern Islands...WoTC Black Star Promos will take a while).
For generation 4 and onwards, there are WAY too many sets to be that specific.
Under the cut is my list/analysis of the cards that I need to complete my Catch ‘Em All binder. If you have any of the cards below and are willing to trade/sell for reasonable prices - usually 10-20% of TCGPlayer for more common cards or ebay recently sold for rarer cards...according to the reddit and forums I trade on - please, hit me up!
I already have all of the cards I need from generations 1 and 2. That is, one of each pokemon. And I actually have all of generation 1 fossil and jungle cards, plus a mixture of base and base 2. For generation 2, I don’t have all the cards from every set, and will probably pick up a few more here and there as I see them, but I’m no actively seeking. But I have every pokemon. INCLUDING THE STUPID UNOWN R THAT WAS ONLY A JAPANESE PROMO AND NEVER PRINTED LIKE THE OTHER UNOWNS.
So the actual list begins with generation 3. The “*” cards are ones I don’t have at all. The ones without “*” I have some version of, just not a version from a set that I want. So without further ado:
GENERATION 3:

I’m honestly not sure that there are cards for ALL of the gen8 pokemon yet...probably not Kubfu and Urshifu, and almost certainly not Zarude.
In addition to the cards I need above, I also have a “Collections” binder - which is for all those  “ex”s or “EX”s or “GX”s or full arts or rainbow rares or anything that is really cool. It also includes card series, such as those listed above (and some others!) as well as my Pikachu, Meowth, Eevee, Vulpix, Ninetales, and Umbreon card collections, as well as a third binder that is a reverse holo binder, where I put all the reverse holos I have (as long as I have a different one, either a second reverse holo or a non-holo, in my Catch ‘Em All binder).
I’m usually pretty willing to trade reverse holos, and there are definitely some cards in my collections binder that I am willing to trade as well.
You can view what I’m offering for trade HERE and HERE.
If you want to trade, let me know!

Its almost been a month since I’ve updated on what games I’m currently playing so here goes!
Fire Emblem: I log on FE Heros almost everyday and try and level my *5 to 40, my ID is 4846791747. I have gotten half way through FE Awakening, and just started FE Birthright, but have extra saves for when I want to try Conquest and Revelation lol.
Pokemon: I’ve been playing a lot of Pokemon TCGO, I’ve moved from having a Sylveon-GX deck to an Espeon/Lunala-GX deck. I also have a Lurantis-GX deck that is fun, but would greatly benefit from the promo Lurantis. My IGN there is Lillia21. I restarted my Pokemon Moon game, and so far have cleared the first island. I don’t like how the “ultra” games make Lunala look :(
Echo of Soul: I’ve decided to take a break from this game, until episode 3 comes out.
Random phones apps: I’ve recently downloaded Love Nikki Dress Up Queen, it’s ridiculously addictive and everything is SO PRETTY. ID is 100444057. I’ve also re-downloaded Destiny Ninja 2+, sadly I lost all my cool stuff but I also get to start a new! my ID for that game is CTvL4vuFRq

Note
On a different series, regarding Pokemon TCG, I'm considering 2 new decks. Mewtwo/Lunala and Lurantis/Solgaleo. Speaking of which, because we're definitely getting the new Full Art cards from Japan's Best of XY Set as Sun & Moon Promos, Aegislash will make a return!
I’d be happy just for Kadabra to come back, not sure how recently he’s been featured.

Pokemon Card of the Day Schedule: Guardians Rising
The second set of the Sun & Moon era continued the focus on Pokemon-GX from the first one, and it certainly made a big difference. Honestly, just having Tapu Lele-GX, which made it into a ton of decks, was enough to count for that. Support wasn’t the only quality the good Pokemon had, with attackers such as Turtonator-GX and Drampa-GX available. There were some very useful Trainers as well, with Brooklet Hill helping Water- and Fighting-type decks with consistency and Choice Band providing extra damage against the many Pokemon-GX arriving on the scene. The set had several cards that you’d see quite often, making it one of the more impressive second sets of a generation.
Trevenant Golisopod Victini Chandelure Salazzle Turtonator-GX Alolan Sandslash Alolan Vulpix Alolan Ninetales-GX Wishiwashi-GX Vikavolt-GX Tapu Koko-GX Garbodor Oricorio #55 Oricorio #56 Toxapex-GX Mimikyu Dhelmise Tapu Lele-GX Machoke Sudowoodo Lycanroc-GX Honchkrow Sableye Metagross-GX Solgaleo Sylveon-GX Comfey Kommo-o-GX Rayquaza Drampa-GX Aether Paradise Conservation Area Altar of the Moone Altar of the Sunne Aqua Patch Brooklet Hill Choice Band Energy Loto Energy Recycler Enhanced Hammer Field Blower Hala Hau Mallow Max Potion Multi Switch Rescue Stretcher
