Soft optical fibers block pain while moving and stretching with the body

Scientists have a new tool to precisely illuminate the roots of nerve pain.

Engineers at MIT have developed soft and implantable fibers that can deliver light to major nerves through the body. When these nerves are genetically manipulated to respond to light, the fibers can send pulses of light to the nerves to inhibit pain. The optical fibers are flexible and stretch with the body.

The new fibers are meant as an experimental tool that can be used by scientists to explore the causes and potential treatments for peripheral nerve disorders in animal models. Peripheral nerve pain can occur when nerves outside the brain and spinal cord are damaged, resulting in tingling, numbness, and pain in affected limbs. Peripheral neuropathy is estimated to affect more than 20 million people in the United States.

“Current devices used to study nerve disorders are made of stiff materials that constrain movement, so that we can’t really study spinal cord injury and recovery if pain is involved,” says Siyuan Rao, assistant professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, who carried out part of the work as a postdoc at MIT. “Our fibers can adapt to natural motion and do their work while not limiting the motion of the subject. That can give us more precise information.”

“Now, people have a tool to study the diseases related to the peripheral nervous system, in very dynamic, natural, and unconstrained conditions,” adds Xinyue Liu PhD ’22, who is now an assistant professor at Michigan State University (MSU).

Details of their team’s new fibers are reported today in a study appearing in Nature Methods. Rao’s and Liu’s MIT co-authors include Atharva Sahasrabudhe, a graduate student in chemistry; Xuanhe Zhao, professor of mechanical engineering and civil and environmental engineering; and Polina Anikeeva, professor of materials science and engineering, along with others at MSU, UMass-Amherst, Harvard Medical School, and the National Institutes of Health.

Chapter 174. I love the contrast in views between Fan Siyuan and Fei Du. Fan Siyuan truly thinks Fei Du is everything His father tried to make him into: a perfect monster with only monstrous intent. And Fei Du is going along with the assumption. The thing he knows people thought he'd become. That he pretends to be. But he didn't become that: he does have good intentions, he does think getting "ones own justice" is appallingly fucked up. At least in this case of Fan siyuan. Fan siyuan is a fucked up person justifying cruel actions just as much as his father was, as Zhang chenjiu is. In Fei Du's eyes. To fei du this looks like a cult of brainwashed, a murderer justifying himself calling anyone trying to do justice legally useless and himself a murderer as Good. Fei Du isn't a stranger to such ideas, he made his own justice-seeking private entity for fucks sake. But he is Not like Fan Siyan. Fei Du KNOWS what a monster looks like, he was raised to be one, and he knows when he's acting monstrous and cruel and takes responsibility for that decision as his own. Versus Fan Siyuan who he also thinks is clearly acting monstrous, but refusing to view himself that way. Fan Siyuan thinks he's morally superior to Fei Du, pure intentioned compared to a vicious beast. In reality, it is the other way around.

“Those scumbags deserved their punishment!” These words came from some believer’s mouth. The words “deserved their punishment” echoed in the empty underground room. It was ghastly.

 

“While I’m not a police officer, most of those who trained to be police officers back then were my students. I understand them,” Fan Siyuan said. “In a certain sense, the police are only mechanical props, following a rigid institution, obeying a rigid sequence. And most of them are only using it as a job to feed their families. They’re powerless. Fairness, righteousness? These things…”

 

At this point, Fan Siyuan laughed coldly. Behind him, all of his believers were filled with stereotyped righteous indignation. Their righteous indignation was unusually pious. Fei Du simply felt that he’d wandered by mistake into the den of some cult.

 

“But I couldn’t see back then where this colossus was, and I wasn’t in a position to investigate it. They had eyes in the City Bureau. They were everywhere. If I lightly touched the edge of it, I would have ended up like…” Fan Siyuan’s words came to an abrupt halt, the rest of what he was going to say disappearing. After a good while, he went on: “There was nothing to be done. If I wanted to get close to it, I had to descend into the shadows myself, descend into the abyss, become one with them… There was nothing I could do.

 

“Destroying one person, one family, is too easy. You think these malicious pieces of garbage should die, but they can easily evade retribution. And even if one victim has the luck to have the demon put to death, so what? Most killers don’t have to pay with their lives. Most of those who ought to die only eat and drink for free in prison for a few years. The price they pay isn’t enough to atone for their crimes.”

 

This time, there was no need for Fei Du to pretend. He displayed a very natural “Are you crazy?” expression. “Oh… So you’re an unpaid volunteer judge?”

I saw Mamamoo and Twice in concert in June! They were both amazinggggg and i'm lucky to say it wasnt my first time seeing either group so I was happy to see them again^^

i'm really proud of how this drawing of Vanner Gon came out! i was really struck by this moment in the Performer music video and tried really hard to capture that same feeling of wonder that i first felt when i saw it^^ he has such beautiful body lines when he dances

Top Debut This Year: I don't keep up with debuts much, but I just discovered KISS OF LIFE today, and I love their music <3 I also know ONE (1) RIIZE song (Memories). Someone also suggested eite's debut album to me over on @kpodcast and it was delightful!! I've heard good things about boynextdoor and zerobaseone, but haven't carved out the time to listen !

Albums/Merchandise You Bought: A lot!!! I am the Best at impulse purchases, so when I see an album in the store I might just buy it! Even if I only know like one song.. But having all the albums on my shelf makes me happy :) I also bought the DKB lightstick, and the new Seventeen lightstick!!! OH and I got the iKON lightstick as a gift for my sister <3

omg hi siyuan!! I hope you’re doing alright! 💜🫂 kcon was A-MA-ZING!!! I had the best time this weekend all three concerts were great and I got to see so many ppl and I was happy bc I got to see some acts I wanted to but hadn’t seen yet (wayv, everglow, g-idle) :D

I lost my mind over taemin and cried hahaha but I was also happy to see the boyz again and see the new sub unit omg omg I can’t believe how sexy their song is 😭😭😭 (I also thought of you when I saw jacob and his cute fluffy bucket hat haha) AND itzyyyy I love them so so much I know I HAVE to see them whenever they come on tour again I also enjoyed some of the opening pre-show groups too (I’m so happy I got to see verivery again 🥹🥹🥹 it’s been so long <3333) seeing ateez and skz again tho was also my highlight!! I finally got to see pirate king which made me so happy bc I’ve been an atiny with my mom since debut so it meant a lot! AND I MANIFESTED SUPER BOWL FOR SKZ!! it was all I asked for (my mom and some friends are my witnesses lololol) this kcon I just wanted to see super bowl live and I got it hehehehe 🙈🙈 but I’m so glad I got to see the new title tracks for skz and ateez (s-class and bouncy)

overall I had a lot of fun even tho my mom and I got hit with rain since day 3 concert was in the middle of a storm lololol (eric and chris both told us thank you for coming in the storm and to be safe 🥹) I really had fun this kcon I was sad it was over but I met some nice ppl and had good seats all 3 days down on the first floor it was so cool to be so close on all days 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I’ll def post some pictures soon once I’ve gone through my videos

I think I’ll recommend make me happy by wheein, 19 by skz, and connected by bang chan (I feel like those match my really chills vibes for my blog and also my love for chris LOL)

so I don’t have like a big multi kpop playlist anymore (it got too big for my liking 😂) I just assign them to groups (I am trying to make a gg playlist soon tho bc I think it’ll all be better in one playlist) so since you picked skz for the other one I just went to my skz playlist and shuffled it. it gave me circus - kr version hahaha 😂👏🏼 I love circus tbh the mischievous/video game vibes are immaculate for me (the sound in the beginning reminds me a lot of splatoon lol)

thank you for sending skz siyuan!! <3333 so I think my favorite era was god’s menu and maybe maniac era now too. reasons being 2020 skz is one of my favorite years for them, and also they helped me a lot to get through the start of the pandemic. maniac era is my other favorite bc it was the start of my love with the maniac tour (I ended up going to the maniac tour 7 times through 2022-23 and each time it was magical and I’m so happy and blessed I got to see them so many times 🥰)

favorite concept for them I believe is a mix between the apocalyptic stuff they’ve done like side effects and scars (and now social path) and I also love the chill and/or cozy vibes they’ve had in things like fnf, the view, blueprint and tmt and things like that. I like when they do mvs like that a lot

favorite album is hard—and you may know that already—for me but I think again GO LIVE is still my favorite album of theirs and also I’ll mention I Am Who?, ODDINARY, and 5 STAR now
