How did you get into witchcraft?

I was a total weeb growing up. Anime was my life. What really caught my attention in the anime I watched, though, was the fantasy: magic was riddled throughout the story lines of my faves like Naruto, Bleach, Inuyasha, and every 90′s magical girl anime you can imagine. Particularly, I was drawn toward the alchemical symbols used in Full Metal Alchemist. I was caught googling images of more magick symbols by a friend. She realized that we’d both been into magick, so we got another friend to join us in our journey though witchcraft.

How did you know you were a witch?

While in the past I’d casted spells and chanted magickal incantations that worked like charms, I wasn’t fully aware of my witchyness until I was walking to my college campus one day. It was autumn, the leaves were falling, the sky was blessed by ochre treetops. It was beautiful. I felt... different that day. Like there was something inside me that needed to come out. Everyday, since the beginning of September, I’d felt that feeling get stronger. While I was walking to school that day, I thought “I want to cast a spell.” It was odd because witchcraft hadn’t crossed my mind much since high school. But my intuition knew what was up, because the months leading up to the start of my college days, I’d stolen a book titled The Encyclopedia of Witches and Witchcraft from my high school library (a book I’d dove into many times in high school), and I’d done some shopping for crystals which I’d randomly became drawn to before moving to school. From there on, I started researching magick spells. Again, this caught the attention of some friends and it turned out many of them were either witches or interested in witchcraft.

How did you start practicing magick?

It wasn’t until five years later, in my freshman year of college, when I actually began to actively practice witchcraft. I didn’t know where to begin, so I asked a friend who was a hereditary Wiccan to teach me one of the basics: sigilcraft. From there, I became curious about the meanings of traditional symbols. I learned about the pentacle, which lead me to learn about the elements, colors, and so on. With this basic knowledge of magick, I began casting spells for prosperity, and I began cursing those who’d done me wrong.

I’m new to witchcraft. Where do I start?

All you can do right now is educate yourself. Pick up a book that explains witchcraft on general terms (not just Wicca!), subscribe to witches on YouTube, follow witches on tumblr, facebook, Instagram, or whatever social media you have. The basics you need to know about casting spells are the elements. Teach yourself about crystals, too! Learn all you can about mythology, when you feel comfortable. Once you begin teaching yourself about myth, you’ll start to understand better what path is best for you -- whether you decide to put faith in a pantheon or not.
