Remembering noted TV and stage actress and Mumbai Doordarshan's most loveable Marathi newsreader of yesteryear, Bhakti Barve on her 18th death anniversary today.

Bhakti Barve was an acclaimed film, theatre and television actress in Marathi, Hindi and Gujarati languages. She is better known for her role in cult classic comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983), directed by Kundan Shah.

Bhakti Barve started out with acting on stage and read news on All India Radio. But she entered the hearts, minds and homes of people across the country when she began appearing as a news anchor on Doordarshan, the only TV channel in the Seventies.

Shortly thereafter, in 1983, Kundan Shah’s cult comedy, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, added film glamour to Barve’s fame, making a star out of the young artist.

Broadcast journalists are adept at facing the camera, and so it wasn’t surprising when a news anchor made the switch to the silver screen.

Yet, in spite of this phenomenal film debut, Barve stuck to her first love: theatre. She was associated with leading groups like Theatre Unit, Indian National Theatre and Rangayan, and is remembered for performances in plays like Ti Phularani, Nag Mandala, Aayee Retire Hote Aahe and Hands Up.

Barve married actor Shafi Inamdar and co-star from the hit TV comedy show Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi. She returned to cinema with the 1998 critically-acclaimed film Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa.

She was left devastated after her husband’s death in 1996. Five years later, Barve herself died in a road accident on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway. Barve while returning to Mumbai after performing a solo act Pu La Fulrani Aani Mee, her tribute to writer, humorist, actor, musician P L Deshpande.

Barve was 52 when she passed away. Yet she had already accomplished more than most artists would have by that age.

Nushrat Bharucha, fresh from the success of Dream Girl, is all set to play the lead in the Hindi remake of the hit Marathi horror film, Lapachhapi. Titled Chhori, the film is helmed by Vishal Furia, who directed the original as well.

Lapachhapi revolved around age-old societal beliefs and practices that give rise to tales of pure terror. The work on the script is currently underway and Vishal Kapoor, who also wrote the original, is writing the remake.

Talking about her new project, Nushrat says, “I am extremely excited to be a part of Chhori. This genre excites me and the fact that the story is anchored in practices of our society, makes it relatable and impactful. I have wanted to work with Vishal Furia and I am so glad we’ve finally collaborated on Chhori, which is so close to his heart.”

Nushrat Bharucha will now be seen in Chhori.

How much pride does Indian news media have in one of its own—Ravish Kumar of NDTV India—winnning the 2019 Magsaysay Award for “harnessing journalism to give voice to the voiceless”?

Surely, it is front-page news given the spate of bad news dogging the industry?

Surely, it is the kind of feel-good stories owners and managers believe readers are dying to read?

Surely, it is an achievement that the anchor of an almost-invisible Hindi TV news channel has trumped the rest of his fraternity with his heart in the right place, without inciting the masses, without inflaming passions, without fabricating news?

Astonishing only one of 24 newspapers surveyed—the Kannada daily Vartha Bharti published from Mangalore (above)—gives Ravish Kumar bagging the award the pride of place, making it the lead story.

Only two others, the Marathi daily Sakal (five column, bottom anchor) and the Kannada daily Praja Vani (two column, above the fold), have a multi-column front page display announcing the award.

Three newspapers have a single column, self-contained news item on page one: Orissa Post, Maharashtra Times (Marathi), and Prabhat Khabar (Hindi).

Four newspapers have a front-page pointer to the news inside: The Times of India, The Pioneer, Deccan Chronicle, and Sakshi (Telugu).

But an astonishing 14 newspapers have nothing on page one, neither a pointer nor a news item: Hindustan Times, The Indian Express, The Telegraph, The New Indian Express, Deccan Herald, Dainik Jagran (Hindi), Dainik Bhaskar (Hindi), Navbharat Times (Hindi), Eenadu (Telugu), Sandesh (Gujarati), Ei Samay (Bengali), Dinakaran (Tamil), Malayala Manorama (Malayalam), Mathrubhumi (Malayalam).

Obviously, Ravish Kumar is a figure known mostly to Hindi audiences, and it can be argued that there is no “carry” for him in non-Hindi “markets”. But if non-Hindi newspapers like Vartha Bharati, Praja Vani and Sakal see “value”, why not the rest?

Obviously, also, there is an element of competition here. Many of the newspapers also own TV stations, and Ravish Kumar’s achievement hits where it hurts most. But, at the end of the day, bagging the Magsaysay Award, even if given by a private organisation, is a “national” achievement?

Especially, when the last Indian journalist to get it was the cartoonist R.K. Laxman of The Times of India—35 years ago.

Ravish Kumar was born in Motihari in Bihar.

Coincidentally, it was also the birth place of George Orwell, the author of the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-four, who coined the fictional character “Big Brother”.

Orwell would be convinced “Big Brother is watching you” looking at the feeble, unenthusiastic coverage of his townsman’s feat by his members of his own fraternity.

Out of 24 newspapers in 9 languages, only three consider Ravish Kumar’s Magsaysay Award worthy of proper front-page display. George Orwell, also born in Motihari, would be convinced that “Big Brother is watching you”.
