Chapter 1

Keith sat in the hospital bed, sniffling and crying. The police officer had just told him he couldn't see his dad because he was really hurt and needed help. He didn't know what was going on, all he knew is that he and his dad were in the hospital, he had his toy hippo his Momma had given him before she got sick and died and that their home was gone. Doctors poked and prodded at him, did multiple tests and had him drink lots of water. Finally a nice nurse too him to see his dad and the eight year old was quick to crawl into his father's arms.

“Dad, when can we leave?” He asked softly. He felt his dad's deep laugh and the warm press of his father's lips against the top of his head. “When the doctors are done making sure we're okay we can go stay with Grandma and Grandpa while we find a new house. How does that sound?”

“Can we get a dog?”

“We sure can buddy.” Keith smiled and closed his eyes. It was late and he was tired. As he was about to fall asleep he fleet his father's arms tighten.

“I love you so much Keith.” His father whispered.

“I love you too Dad.”

In the morning his father was dead. Keith became a ward of the state and a social worker came to take him to the orphanage. His grandparents fought to take custody but were ruled incapable dude to their old age. Keith thought it was dumb but they wouldn't listen to him. A week later his father was buried next to his mother and Keith was alone. He didn't like the orphanage. The kids were mean and it was too cold. Some of the staff was really mean and would make him go to time out just for sticking up for someone. When he first became a foster kid it was because they didn't have room for him anymore. Keith hated being a foster kid. Some of the families were awful, others were neglectful on accident because the adults already had their own kids to take care of, sometimes he got sent to live with elderly people and then had to leave because they just were too old to take care of him. Keith swore up and down that as soon as he could age out of the system he would strike out on his own and never rely on anyone again. As he grew Keith became closed off and bitter. He got into fights at school, never did his work despite being one of the smartest kids in his class and was constantly being threatened with expulsion. He passed from foster home to foster home, from orphanage to orphanage, from social worker to social worker, nothing in Keith’s life was a constant anymore except for his old toy hippo and his dad’s red biker jacket. On his fifteenth birthday Keith’s social worker, a kind woman name Jenny Miraz, knocked on his bedroom door at the foster home he was at.

“Keith, may I talk to you?” Keith didn’t say anything, not even a protest when she walked in. Miss. Miraz set a box in his lap, smiling.

“Happy birthday Keith.” Keith smiled a little, thanking her softly. Miss. Miraz was the only social worker who bothered to remember his birthday, the only person he gave a little room in his heart for these days. Keith opened the gift, gasping softly at the dagger inside it.

“This was one of the things left to you in your father’s will. Your mother’s knife. I think you’re finally old enough to have it but you have to promise me you won’t hurt anyone with it, okay?” Keith nodded, setting the box aside and leaning against Miss. Miraz.

“Thank you Miss. Miraz, I love it.” The two sat in silence before she began to talk to Keith again.

“The state has agreed to put you in a big brother program. Now that you’re going to the Garrison they and the state feel it’s best if you were part of it.”

“What’s a big brother program?”

“Well, it’s like moving to a new foster home but instead of that person being like a parent they’re more like a sibling. You’re going to be assigned to one of the boys who take the role of sibling and move in together. It’s his job to help you through life and teach you how to be able to support yourself after you age out and are an adult. Of course if we put you in the program you won’t have a social worker popping around as often.”

“Oh.” Keith was quiet for a while, fiddling with the dagger.

“Miss. Miraz, do you think I’ll do okay in the program?”

“I do. You’re a good kid Keith, I can tell.”

“Will you still be my social worker?” Jenny Miraz was the only person Keith felt close to and he didn’t want to lose her.

“I will. Promise.” She holds out her pinky and the two shake on it, smiling at each other. Keith would be meeting his big brother that weekend and moving in too.

Chapter 2

Keith sat in the small plastic chair, his leg bouncing. He was waiting for his new brother to pick him up so Keith could get a feel of the apartment before he moved in and Keith was nervous. Apparently a lot of star students at the Garrison were in the program, including the Garrison Golden Boy Takashi Shirogane and Keith was sort of scared Takashi was going to be who he was paired with. Takashi was his hero but he knew if the other students found out about the program and that Keith was Takashi’s “little brother” then both of their lives would be ruined. Right as he was going to cal Miss. Miraz to let her know he wanted to back out a familiar voice called out.

“Hey! I’m sorry I’m late! I had papers to help grade.” Standing before him was Takashi Shirogane and Keith felt his heart sank.

“I’m Takashi but you can call me Shiro. I’m your new big brother.” Shiro held out his hand for Keith to shake, smiling brightly. Keith took a deep breath and shakily shook Shiro’s hand, glad he had worn his gloves so Shiro wouldn’t feel his sweaty palms.

“Keith Kogane.”

“You’re in Professor Holt’s physics class! I was just grading your report! Holy crap dude, you’re like a mini genius! Don’t tell anyone but you definitely got an ‘A+’ on this one Keith!” Keith stood there in shock, his mouth ajar as Shiro praised him. Shiro chuckled softly and closed Keith’s mouth by pushing on the underside of his chin.

“Close your mouth Keith, you’re going to catch flies. Come on, Adam is excited to meet you. He’s my flight partner, we live together but he’s always so busy so you probably won’t see him much.” Keith nodded, following after Shiro who had started leading Keith out of the orphanage. It was only until they were halfway down the hall that Keith realized Shiro was still holding his hand.

‘Just like a big brother would.’

Chapter 3

Keith was starting to regret joining the program. Not only was Shiro constantly checking up on him at school but he couldn’t catch a break at home because he lived with Shiro and Adam now. Adam wasn’t around as often but Shiro was constantly there. Always asking about his classes, pestering Keith about if he needed anything and was always trying to pry into his past. Keith decided that instead of confronting Shiro about a bit of space being needed he would just try to avoid Shiro. He didn’t talk, he always dipped out of things before Shiro saw him, hell Keith would climb up the fire escape to his room so Shiro didn’t know he was home yet. It had been almost a year of living with Shiro and Keith just kept pushing him away. He thought it would be easier in the program but he was wrong. So so wrong.

Keith was heading to his class when he bumped into Shiro, who he was trying to avoid. Shiro smiled brightly and tossed an arm around Keith’s shoulders.

“Hey little bro! Didn’t expect to see you down this hall! How’s class going, Sam told me you’ve been pretty distracted lately and I want to make sure you’re doing okay. Do you need help with the material?” That was the last straw for Keith.

“Get away from me! I am so sick of you constantly asking me questions and hovering over my shoulder! ‘Keith do you need this, Keith can you do that, Keith don’t forget to take your medication, Keith make sure you finish your homework’ damnit Shiro I can do things on my own! I’m a foster kid, not a fucking fragile baby! The only reason I was offered a spot in the program was because the foster program couldn’t handle me anymore! I was put in the foster program because they had no room in the orphanage! I can take care of myself so just get away from me! You’re not my brother! I don’t need you! I don’t need anyone!” Keith hated that his voice was shaking, tears falling down his face and that he was hyperventilating. The rest of the people in the hall had stopped when Keith started screaming, everyone in shock. ‘How dare he speak to Shiro like that?’ Keith knew that’s what they were thinking. He rubbed his arm across his eyes and turned away from Shiro.

“I’m packing my things and I’m going back to the orphanage.” Shiro didn’t speak the whole time Keith yelled at him but in that moment Shiro reached a hand out and set it on Keith’s shoulder.

“I get it. The world turned its back on you and you’ve grown up believing that the only one you need is yourself but that isn’t true Keith. You have me and Adam, you have Commander Holt and Matt and little Katie, yeah he’s tough but you have Commander Iverson. You have a family now Keith and we’re not going to leave you alone when you’re hurting. I check on you as much as I do because I want to see you soar Keith, I know you can be the best pilot to ever come out of the Garrison and I want to help you become that person. You’ve been handed a shitty deck in the card game of life but you’re not the only player now. You have all of us and we’re always going to be there for you because family doesn’t leave each other no matter what. I am not giving up on you Keith. You’re my baby brother.” Keith tried to hold it back but he began sobbing, quickly turning around and burying his face in Shiro’s chest. Shiro held Keith tightly, kissing the top of his head and running a hand through his hair.

“It’s okay buddy, I’ve got you. I’ve got you. I love you little bro.”

Chapter 4

Keith got out of bed excitedly to the smell of cinnamon rolls and hot coco. He dashed down the stairs and into the kitchen, wrapping his arms around Shiro tightly.

“Merry Christmas Shiro!” Shiro laughed happily and moved the pot of coco of the stove, turning the burner off before hugging his brother back.

“Merry Christmas Keith. Go wake up Adam and brush your teeth, breakfast is almost ready.” Keith nodded and ran back up stairs, busting into Adam’s room and jumping on his bed. Adam jerked awake and groaned softly.

“I’m up, I’m up.” He muttered.

“Good! Breakfast is almost ready, let’s go.” Keith darted out of Adam’s room, quickly brushing his hair and teeth before going back down stairs. He walked to the kitchen and sat at the table just as Adam came downstairs and Shiro pulled the cinnamon rolls out of the oven. The food and drinks were passed out and the small family ate happily, Keith humming christmas songs under his breath. As he helped Adam clean up he thought back to what had happened that got him to where he was now. He still missed his mom and dad but thinking back on it Keith would never regret joining the big brother program that brought Shiro into his life. Once the dishes were done the three gathered in the living room and passed out presents and stockings, giving each other hugs and tossing the wrapping paper. The gifts weren’t the most expensive things and there weren’t a whole lot of them but they were nice and Keith loved each one dearly. Right as Keith was about to unwrap his last present Adam got up to answer the door. Shiro turned to Keith with a smile.

“Before you open that and before Adam gets back I want to give you these.” He said, handing a small folder of papers to Keith that he had pulled out from behind the TV. Keith frowned when he saw his name on the folder, opening it up. They were his records from the foster system.

“Shiro I don’t understand.” He said. Was Shiro sending him back? Shiro pulled out the last sheet in the group, one Keith hadn’t looked at yet, and set it in the front. It had a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo but Keith did understand the end.

‘By signing these papers Takashi Shirogane recognizes that State Ward Keith Yorak Kogane is now his legal charge. Takashi Shirogane will become the legal guardian of Keith Yorak Kogane once these documents have been signed and notarized by a court of law.’

Keith’s head shot up as he finished reading the document.

“Is it-are you-I’m-” He couldn’t get what he wanted to say out of his mouth but Shrio just smiled and nodded.

“They’ve been approved, signed and notarized. I’m your legal guardian now.” Keith felt his eyes fill with tears as he scrambled into Shiro’s arms, sobbing happily. Shiro held Keith tight, kissing the top of his head.

“Welcome home baby brother. Welcome home.” Just then, a soft bark echoed in the apartment and a tiny ball of black and white floof came barreling into the room and to the two brothers, Adam following in after. The husky puppy wiggled it’s way into Keith’s arms, barking and licking his face. Keith sat there in shock.

“A puppy?” Shiro smiled and nodded to the last unwrapped present that Keith quickly tore open. Inside the box lay a blue collar with a dog tag on it. The tag had Keith’s name and information on one side and the puppy’s name on the other.

“Kosmo.” He whispered. The puppy’s ears shot up and he barked again as Keith laughed and clipped the collar on him, picking him up and hugging him tight as Kosmo covered his new owner’s face in kisses. Shiro snapped a photo, sending it to all their friends before pulling Keith into another tight hug.

Christmas Eve will find me

Summary: “Everyone is useful in some shape or form, at some point in their life, to an insurmountable number of people. Everyone’s existence affects the fabric of space and time whether they realize it or not, and this reality as we know it is affected by your very existence. So…” I waved a hand dismissively as if I just explained something rather simple. “Like I said… no one is useless.”

Lance was dumbstruck for a moment, his jaw slightly slacked and his eyebrows lowered. “Holy crow.” Then his bewilderment slowly turned into a wicked grin. “Aren’t you something else.”

"Okay I just have to warn you… riding in Red is an… experience."

"Red?" I had just made it down the last step with my oxygen tank which I insisted I carry. "You named your car after its color?"

Lance made a strange sound while he bit his lower lip. "Wwwwwell… sorta." He jerked his head towards the street where cars were parked along the side. "Mine's the Jeep."

I looked and although I didn't know cars all that well (Hunk was a bit of a nerd when it came to those kinds of things - he was a mechanic after all) but I did recognize the old, beat up Jeep Cherokee. Except it was a faded blue, not the cherry red I was looking for.

"Are you colorblind?" I knew reds and greens were easily confused for those who were colorblind (heck, Matt was slightly colorblind, I had to sometimes give him pointers on his wardrobe) but I had never heard of anyone confusing reds with blues. "Your car is blue."

"Yep."

"…soooo why do you call it Red?"

He let out a small laugh that held the hint of a snicker, as if he were trying to hold back his laughter. "So, the local ad for it said it was 'red.' But when I actually saw the car it was this hideous shade of orange, like when you grab the crayon you think is red but it's the 'red orange' one and then your picture is completely ruined. So I had my car painted and apparently red is a super expensive paint color so I went with blue instead. But I was already set on calling my car 'Red' so it stuck." He shrugged his shoulders, as if it made complete sense. "Besides, my cat's name is Blue so I couldn't name my car the same name."

"Your cat's name is Blue?" I let out a playful scoff. "I worry for your future children, Green and Yellow."

He laughed and the sound was music to my ears. When we reached his car he opened the passenger door for me, his hands offering once again to take my tank but I shooed him away as I pulled it in myself. He held up his hands defensively before closing the door and I thought it was the most endearing thing. He kept wanting to help me and normally I would have gotten more annoyed by his persistence, but despite his desire to constantly help he also allowed me to do it myself. Most guys would have insisted and grabbed the tank from me despite my protesting. Lance always offered a hand but also gave me the choice whether or not to take it.

That may have been part of the influencing factor to inviting him over.

When he got situated in his seat he turned to look at me, his blue eyes serious. "Have you ever been to Disneyland?"

"Yeah?"

"Been on the Indiana Jones ride?"

I didn't like where this was headed. "Yes?"

"My driving is like that. Kinda jerky and terrifying and you may fear for your life sometimes, but otherwise compleeeeetely safe," he said with a reassuring hand gesture.

While I wanted to believe him, I still made sure my seatbelt was tight and secure. He ignited the engine and the car purred to life. He hit on the radio and immediately started belting out to the song that played. It caught me off guard at first, especially when he jerked the car out onto the road, but as I watched him move his lips to the tune his energy was contagious as I formed a smile. I began to sing along with him, although not nearly as well, until I half yelped half screamed when Lance jerked the car to a stop at the red stop sign and it was so hard I thought we hit something.

"Sorry. I can't exactly push the brake gently," he said while pursing his lips together and making a popping sound. "I have no idea where we're going. Well I know we're going to your house, but I don't know where your house is."

"Oh! Right." Lance started to turn the car right but I quickly yelled, "Nonono! Straight! Go straight!" The car flung back on course and now I was starting to understand why he compared his driving to the Indiana Jones ride. I could start to feel my lunch work its way back up. "I said 'right' as in 'of course' or 'gotcha,' not the direction."

"Gotcha," he smirked. "Good thing no one was around to see that, right?"

"Right."

"You mean, of course."

"Right." Lance started singing again but I had to yell "RIGHT RIGHT RIGHT!!" when he almost missed the turn. "I meant the direction that time!!"

He let out a wheezing sound. "Just point with your fingers from now on."

I don't think my mom has ever been so ecstatic in her life.

Not only had I made a new friend (wasn't even sure to call him that yet), but it was a boy and I was the one to initiate inviting him to dinner. I was surprised my mom didn't accuse me with the 'who are you and what have you done with my daughter?' line. Honestly, I was still trying to grasp the fact I invited a stranger boy over for dinner.

I'd never hear the end of it from Matt.

Despite the dread and anxiety I felt crawling up my stomach at the thought of Lance meeting my family and my family reacting to me inviting Lance (and the feeling in my stomach wasn't just from his driving), seeing Shiro answering the door somehow made everything more bearable. The man was practically another brother of mine.

"Hey!" Shiro greeted us with a welcoming smile. "Lance, how's the leg?"

"Still kickin'! How's the arm?"

"Still hanging!" They both laughed and did the classic bro hand grab pull-in hug thing. I shook my head with a smile as I entered the house to see mom and Matt beaming with enough energy to rival the sun. I wanted to groan out loud but I tried to be on my best behavior, if not for Lance's sake, for Shiro's.

Oddly enough, the dinner discussion flowed more smoothly than I could imagine. My family only asked about Lance (and nothing too touchy concerning his leg or his cancer) and Shiro told some funny stories and my dad went on this long tangent about Godel's incompleteness theorems. It wasn't until I blurted the question that was gnawing my mind did the evening take a turn.

"So is your prosthetic trans-tibial or trans-femoral?"

"Katie!" My mother had a look that was a mix of shock and disappointment.

"Oh so that's your real name?" Lance asked in a muffled voice, his mouth full of food.

Mom rolled her eyes and I knew I was going to get a talk later. "She introduces herself as Pidge at the group therapy??"

"I figured it was a nickname," Lance shrugged, swallowing. "But to answer your question, I think trans-femoral. Does that mean my leg ends somewhere along my femur?" When I nodded (since my mouth was full) he continued, "Yeah they told me I have an AK which stands for 'above the knee.' Sounds like I've got a firearm for a leg, which is cool."

"Lance, sweetheart," my mom started, "You don't have to talk about your prosthetic if you don't want to. I'm sorry Katie brought it up."

"You don't have to talk about anything that makes you uncomfortable," my father added.

Lance frowned, shrugging once more. "It's fine. I'm fine. A month ago I probably wouldn't be, but… there's no point in avoiding it. It's a part of me now."

"That's the spirit!" Shiro said with a playful punch from his fake arm. "In time you'll hardly notice it. You're handling it better than I did - took me months to get used to it."

"Yeah but you lost your arm, your hand. Arguably you use that a lot more than your leg."

Shiro hummed. "Perhaps for more finite, dexterous movements. But unless you're vegging on the couch watching Netflix all day, you use your legs more."

"It's true," I pitched in. "Plus, a transfemoral amputee must use approximately eighty percent more energy to walk than a person with two whole legs. I'd say your adjustment is harder than Shiro's."

"Huh," Lance said, "I never thought of it that way…"

Matt side-eyed mom before he focused his attention on Lance. "What kind of hydraulics does your prosthetic use? Or does yours have a motor or microprocessor?"

"Uuuhhh…" Lance looked between all of us like we were speaking a different language. "I actually don't know any of that. I just do what the doctors tell me."

"You'd probably have to have some kind of microprocessing to keep the movements of the knee in sync with your left leg," I said, biting my lip as I thought. "Might even utilize myoelectric signals."

"How about I just show you my leg?" Lance suggested. My lips parted in an excited gasp but my mother cut me off before I could gush about how much I wanted to see the mechanics of his prosthetic.

"Absolutely not. Katie, I think it's time we served our guest dessert instead of examining him."

"It's fine, Mrs. Holt," he said with a lifted hand, "but I'll at least wait until we're done at the dinner table."

Despite the fact I never got to see his leg (whenever he tried to show me my mother interfered), we had an enjoyable time together. After dinner and dessert, Lance got to see the ugly side of my family as we played several rounds of Uno. Poor Shiro could never win at that game with his arm's lag. We played a few rounds of Taboo as well, something my father and brother were crazy good at. Lance was constantly surprised at how quickly they guessed the word when only a few clues were given. He had a nice energy about him - the way he smiled, the contagiousness of his laugh, the pleasant upbeat tone of his voice - all contributed to my inevitable falling for him.

When it was time for him to go, my mom sent him home with a bunch of leftovers and extra brownies. I walked with him out to his blue car named Red. The sun had already set but it was still pretty light out and everything was set into a hazy purple dusk. Crickets were chirping and a cool breeze graced the evening air.

"I hope my family wasn't too overwhelming," I said, almost an apology.

Lance snorted. "Your family, overwhelming? You should see mine."

I laughed but stopped short when I realized that his words could have been taken as an invitation. I idly wondered if he meant them that way, and if so, then we both had invited each other over to our families on the first day of knowing each other. Way to move quickly, Pidge.

"I'd like to see yours," I said, not even realizing how… cheesy that sounded. This was turning into some cheap romance straight out of a Twilight novel and I wanted to crawl into my bed and never see the light of day again. But at the same time… I meant it. "And your cat, who I hope isn't actually blue and you're just being colorblind again."

Lance offered me a smirk and it was a look I don't think I'd ever get tired of seeing. "How about next week after group therapy we have dinner at my place instead? You might want to bring earplugs, my family's loud."

"I'm sure they're fine," I scoffed, offering him a smile. "That… actually sounds like a good plan. Assuming you still want to come to group therapy."

"Are you kidding? I freakin' love Coran!" He chuckled. "And besides, I'd like to see you again. I know I already thanked your parents a dozen times, but seriously… thank you for inviting me over."

I felt my face grow hot and lungs tighten. I raised a hand to rub the back of my neck out of nervousness. "I… it's no problem, I mean… you're welcome." I finally gained the courage to lift my eyes to meet his gorgeous blues. The contact made me want to shy away once more but somehow I found myself entranced as my eyes stayed glued upon his irises. "I'm glad we were able to meet, since you were able to see Shiro again and all. It was kind of a neat coincidence."

I didn't think his smirk could get any more enticing but it did. "There is no such thing as coincidence, Katie." The way he said it was pure poetry and I almost converted to his philosophy on the spot.

I offered him a playful frown and my rebuttal: "There is no such thing as fate, Lance."

"We'll see about that."

Fact known only to Takashi, Matthew and Samuel Holt- Takashi and Matthew were dating when they went on the Kerberos mission that went so very, very wrong.

“Please go to sleep.”

“Shiro- we’re going into space tomorrow.”

“Exactly, so we need to get some sleep.”

They were lying in Shiro’s bed, which was admittedly too small for two people, but Matt and Shiro didn’t care.

“What do you think we’ll find?”

“Ice.”

“I mean, yeah, obviously, that’s what we’re going for- “

“Babe- “

“But it’s the edge of the solar system- “

“Matt, please- “

“So, what if we find aliens or something.”

“Honey, I’m begging you, please go to sleep.”

“What if we find crop circles?”

“Crazy theories are Katie’s thing, aren’t they?”

“How funny would that be?”

“It’s almost 2am.”

“Then you better shut me up Shirogane.”

And so Shiro did just that. Almost an hour later, when they decided to try to sleep again, Shiro rested his head on top of Matt’s and took a deep breath, enjoying Matt’s warmth and the familiarity of being with the person you love.

“You were so thirsty for blood you injured your fellow earthling.”

All of the air whooshed out of Shiro and he tried to remember how to breathe.

“You attacked my brother? Why?!”

No, it wasn’t possible- it made no sense. Shiro loved Matt, he knows he does, so why did he attack him? Why would he want to kill his boyfriend? He couldn’t remember any of this experience.

“No- it can’t be true.”

“I was there. We all were.”

No, no, no, he thought, he would never hurt Matt, he wouldn’t do it, how could he do it?

“I don’t believe it, there’s gotta be more to the story, I couldn’t have hurt my… friend.”

“I’m not gonna make it,” Matt said, sounding close to tears, “I’ll never see my family again.”

“You can do this.” Shiro said, but Matt only looked down and whimpered in fear.

Shiro moved on instinct. He dove forward, yelling and grabbed the closest weapon before turning on Matt and slicing his leg. There is no way he can fight if he can’t stand.

“This is my fight! I want blood!” He leaned down close to Matt and felt his face soften as he looked at his boyfriend. “Take care of your father. I love you.”

He was grabbed from behind and thrown into the arena. He tried to ignore the fact that the last time Shiro would see the man he loved would be after he had just severely injured him.

“Pidge, there you are.”

“Why did you hurt my brother?” Pidge asked, looking down, “You were his friend.”

“I did it to save him.” Shiro said.

“What?”

“My memory of the event came back when we were fighting the monster.” Shiro began. He sat down next to Pidge and told the story. Except for one line. I love you. It hangs in the air around him now. The first and only time he had said it and it was right after he attacked Matt. Great timing Shiro he thought miserably.

Pidge hugged him close, crying now and apologising for doubting him.

“I can tell you miss them. I know they miss you too. You brother and father would be proud of you Katie.”

Pidge gasped and looked up at Shiro.

“Don’t worry,” he said. “Your secret’s safe with me.”

Though Matt would kill me if he found out I brought you up here he thought to himself. The Holt’s all had one thing in common- they would do anything to protect their family.

Matt had never thought he’d be a part of a rebel group, let alone a rebel group out in space that fights against evil aliens who are trying to take over the universe. He also never thought he’d be found by his little sister who was a paladin of Voltron a.k.a. the defender of the universe.

And finding out his boyfriend was also part of Voltron and had crash landed on earth only to wormhole his way to the other side of the universe with his little sister, Shiro’s little brother Keith and two other Garrison students was just the icing on the multi-layered, gigantic cake.

But when he actually saw Shiro for the first time since the arena incident where Shiro saved Matt’s life it was… well… weird.

At first glance Matt didn’t even want to believe it was Shiro- it looked like him and talked like him- but something was off.

For years Matt imagined what his reunion with Shiro would be like; them both crying and running into each-others arms, Matt finally being able to say I love you and kiss Shiro’s grin off his face.

But reality was harshly different.

The awkward handshake, the awkward bro hug that was a semi-romantic hug for a fraction of a second, and a whole lot of strangers watching. Well, strangers to Matt, family to Shiro he supposed.

“Shiro?” He’d asked, stepping towards him in awe, “it’s so good to see you, um, sir.”

That’s when they hugged. Matt obviously knew they had grown a little since they’d been apart, but the way that Shiro held Matt just didn’t… feel like Shiro.

“Pidge never gave up on finding you.” Shiro said in response, with a voice that wasn’t quite right and a tone that didn’t fit. Does that mean Shiro stopped looking for him?

“Yeah, she can be pretty stubborn at times.” Matt responded light-heartedly.

Nothing with Shiro was really the same after that. They had become two different people and so Matt decided that they should take a break from their relationship. If they still wanted to they could try again after Zarkon was defeated.

They never did get back together.

They barely spoke after Zarkon was killed and Matt stayed with the rebel forces, Shiro staying with Voltron. And that was that. Matt felt like a part of him was missing, or something was broken, or he was physically injured. Being apart from Shiro was hell, but it wasn’t this new Shiro that he missed. He missed Takashi Shirogane, his boyfriend and the one he loves. But he must have died in that arena, when he was tortured and experimented on. He died long before they were reunited.

“Hey Pidge, who were you just talking to?” Shiro asked as he walked into the common room, watching as Pidge put away her communicator.

“I was just explaining what had just happened to Matt.”

“Wait, what?” Shiro asked, his head spinning. “Did you just say Matt?”

“Yeah, he went really silent and said he’d be here as soon as he could.”

“Matt’s alive?” Shiro whispered, almost to himself.

Shiro spent the next two days in a daze. The other paladins chalked it up to him getting used to this new body and the new prosthetic that Pidge and Hunk had made but he couldn’t stop thinking about Matt.

Shiro avoided Matt when he arrived, claiming he wasn’t feeling well and they could catch up later. Pidge had just shrugged and run off to see her brother. He could only avoid everyone for so long though, so eventually he put on a brave face and joined the others.

And there he was. Matthew Holt, standing a little further to the side than everyone else, just watching. Matt immediately turned when Shiro walked in, their eyes meeting almost instantly.

“Shiro?” Matt asked tentatively as he entered. Shiro couldn’t ignore the way he felt lighter when he saw Matt and the relief he felt when he spoke. Matt was alive. Matt was here. Matt was once again in the same room as Shiro.

Matt stepped forward once, hesitant and half reaching out, like he was afraid.

“Takashi?” he whispered.

Shiro couldn’t help himself anymore, and he pulled Matt into a hug, not bothering to fight back the sob that formed in his throat.

“God Matt, I missed you so much.” Shiro said, squeezing Matt even tighter. Something seemed to open in Matt and then he was crying too, gripping onto Shiro like a life-boat.

“It’s you,” Matt said through his tears. “It’s really you.”

Shiro pulled away from the hug but didn’t let go of Matt- who had moved his grip to Shiro’s upper arms.

“I should tell you what happened when I met clone-you.” Matt said, obviously working himself up but Shiro beat him to the punch.

“He fooled everyone Matt, so I’m not going to be angry or anything. You honestly don’t have to tell my anything if you don’t want to.”

“No Shiro, that’s not- “he cut himself off and huffed before starting again. “We sort of kind of broke up? I guess?”

Shiro felt like he had just been punched in the gut. He lowered his arms and took a step backward, trying to put space between him and Matt. Trying being the key word because Matt refused to let go of Shiro and stepped right back into Shiro’s space.

“Let me finish,” Matt said. “I could just tell it wasn’t you, but I didn’t want to believe the worst, so I just assumed we became different people after the arena, so I called it off. But it felt different and weird because it wasn’t really you. I knew it wasn’t you the same way that I know that you are you. If that makes sense.”

“So… what are you saying?” Shiro asked, the cogs turning in his brain.

“I’m saying that I knew it was a clone, so I stayed away but now that I’ve got the real you here I am never letting you go again.”

“Really?” Shiro hesitantly placed his hands back on Matt’s waist, enjoying the warmth. Matt was grinning now, and he stepped closer, his face coming within kissing distance.

“Your sister is definitely watching,” Shiro murmured, but he didn’t move away.

“I don’t care if you don’t,” Matt said, tilting his head slightly.

“I don’t care,” Shiro confirmed before closing the gap. Matt felt exactly the same as Shiro remembered. Shiro tightened his grip in Matt’s hips as Matt’s hands wandered into Shiro’s hair, tugging a little and earning a small moan from Shiro in return.

They separated only because they were grinning too much to keep kissing, but then Matt leaned away and looked at his hands, which were now smeared with blank ink.

“What the hell?”

Shiro felt a flush rise on his cheeks. “When Allura transferred me back into this body, my hair turned completely white. So, I’ve been putting this product into my hair to act as a hair dye.”

Matt burst out laughing, hunching over and gripping Shiro’s arms to keep him upright.

“God, I love you,” Matt said, still laughing as he straightened. Shiro gasped at that, his grip going slack on Matt’s waist.

“Say it again,” Shiro whispered, pulling Matt closer. Matt’s smile grew soft and he placed his hands on either side of Shiro’s face, before putting their foreheads together.

“I love you Takashi Shirogane,” Matt said, “I love you so much.”

“I love you too,” Shiro whispered back and then they were kissing again, slower this time. Matt pushed apart Shiro’s lips and then they were kissing more franticly, like they had only just remembered how long they’d been apart and they had to make up for lost time.

“CAN YOU GUYS STOP THAT I DON’T WANT TO SEE THAT I NEED TO BURN THIS FROM MY MIND!” Pidge screamed, her voice a much higher octave than normal. Shiro and Matt pulled apart sheepishly and Shiro put his arm around Matt’s waist, so they were now standing side by side, looking at the other paladins.

“How long has this been going on?” Keith asked, stepping forward.

“Since the garrison,” Matt replied.

“WHAT?” Pidge and Keith yelled simultaneously. Then the last thing Shiro was expecting to happen happened. Pidge ran forward and gave Shiro a hug, tears forming in her eyes.

“I can’t imagine how hard it must have been for you,” Pidge said, her voice muffled through Shiro’s shirt. “You should have told me, but I think I get it. Talking about him when he could have been… anyway, I get it.”

“Thanks Pidge,” Shiro said, squeezing her tight. She pulled away from him then and sniffed as she wiped her eyes.

“C’mon guys,” Keith said, raising his voice so everyone could hear him, “let’s give these guys some space.”

As everyone walked off Shiro tilted his head and kissed Matt’s temple, breathing him in.

“Matt, do me a favour,” Shiro said against the side of Matt’s head. Matt hmm’d in response. “Let’s not get separated ever again.”

“That’s not really up to us,” Matt responded, twisting in Shiro’s arms so they were face to face again.

“It is if you never leave my side.”

“That,” Matt said, leaning in with a grin stretching across his face, “I can most certainly do.” They kissed again, only briefly though. Shiro pulled Matt in for an embrace, content to just hold Matt, to bury his face in Matt’s neck and simply breathe again, in a way he hasn’t been able to do since their last night before the Kerberos mission.

Day 11: Family

Hey guys, sorry for disappearing for so long! This story is sort of a second part to Family Tragedy (my second story on Tumblr). You don’t have to read it first for it to make sense though. I hope everyone enjoys! ❤️

It would be their first Christmas home after making it back from space. Everyone was excited to spend Christmas with their families and were already discussing the plans they had made in their group chat. Unsurprisingly and unfortunately, there was a long silence from their blue paladin. Shiro was almost afraid to ask, but he wanted Lance to be included over the holiday if he had nobody to spend it with.

Space Padré: Lance, do you have any plans for the holidays?

Blue Boi: No, I don’t think so. I’ll probably just spend it in the dorm.

Uptown Hunk: What? Bro. No. You can come to my house, my parents would love to have you.

Baby Meme: Mine too!

County Fair: Dad would probably want to meet you.

Space Padré: Mom and Grandpa would be glad to have you too. You could come to any of our places for the holidays!

Blue Boi: You guys really don’t have to. I’m really not that fun…

County Fair: Shut your whore mouth, Lance.

Uptown Hunk: Yeah Lance, you’re plenty fun! You deserve to have a fun holiday!

Baby Meme: You know what we could do. We could have one big Christmas gathering with all of our families.

Uptown Hunk: That’s a great idea! Then they could all meet each other too!

After that, they rushed to coordinate with each other and their families. They made sure to include Lance in all of their plans, they didn’t want to make him feel uncomfortable. Whenever they would meet up, he would give them a small smile but wouldn’t say very much as they planned around their schedules. It worried them but they understood. They wouldn’t want to spend their Christmases without their families after all. Even when they spent time together without planning, he would sit quietly out of their circle, minding his own business or talking lowly to whoever was sitting beside him.

On the night of their party, however, he was all smiles. He introduced himself to every single member of their families and gave the parents their own little gift from him. Of course, they were all warned beforehand to not ask about his family since they didn’t want to bring up any painful memories for him.

It seemed like he was having a grand time while he danced with Matt in the middle of the room, surrounded by the family’s various cousins. They laughed as Matt spun him around and dipped him low to the ground. As the music came to an end they dramatically parted from each other to go their separate ways. Lance walked over to them, throwing an arm around Shiro and Hunk.

“Great party guys!” He commented.

“Yeah, it came out much better than I was expecting honestly,” Shiro said looking around the room.

“Right? Who knew that Pidge had so many cousins!” Hunk laughed. It was true, they weren’t expecting the Holts to walk in with a train of people following behind them.

“They’re Italian,”

“That is true,”

“What are you guys doing?” Keith’s voice drawled from behind them. They turned and saw him standing, holding a cup, but what really drew their attention was the sweater he was wearing.

“What the fuck,” Hunk breathed out before he cupped a hand over his mouth and wheezed loudly. His sweater was a knit bright red sweater that had “Merry Christmas Y’all” stitched on it with two long horns positioned under the lettering. Shiro and Lance clutched to each other as they stared at the sweater, laughter pouring out of their mouths. Keith’s face lit up with a blush and his cup crumpled in his hand. Thankfully it looked like he finished his drink because nothing poured over the side.

“Shut the hell up,” he growled, glaring at the three of them. They vainly tried to stop laughing, Lance coughing and choking with the effort. They stood straight as they stared at Keith’s face, not daring to glance lower.

“It’s a tradition,” he said before they could ask any questions. He gestured with his head and they looked over to where Keith’s dad was talking with Colleen. He was turned just enough that they could see the words “Happy Yall-idays,” stretched across his chest.

“This is the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” Hunk said doubling over.

Even as Ken came over to them to greet them, they kept a straight face. It was only after he turned his back again that they burst into laughter, this time dragging Keith along with them.

It wasn’t long before Pidge joined them as well. As much as she missed spending the holidays with her family, it was a bit overwhelming to suddenly go from seven people to over twenty in a small space.

As their night drew to a close, with aunts and uncles carrying their younger cousins out; they noticed that Lance was fidgeting slightly and sneaking glances towards them.

“Whats wrong Lance?” Hunk asked putting his hand on his shoulder. He nervously looked at all of them.

“I have something I do every Christmas and I wondering if maybe, you don’t have to, but if you don’t have anything to do if you guys would come with me,” he offered quickly looking down at the ground.

“Of course we’ll go with you Lance,” Shiro said gently, reaching forward to ruffle his hair.

“Really?” He asked. Shiro was confused to see how glassy his eyes were. Whatever it was, it really meant a lot to Lance and they wanted to be there for him.

“Yeah man!” Hunk said slapping him on the back with a smile. Lance rubbed his arm, smiling up at them bashfully.

They helped send off their families and load up their cars before waving as they drove away. Then they were piling into Lance’s car with the promise that he would drive them back after they were finished. They watched from the windows as houses strung with Christmas lights passed by them.

“Are you going to tell us where we’re going?” Keith asked, breaking the comfortable silence that permeated the car.

“Nah, I’ll tell you when we get there,” Lance said after a moment.

“Aww, why?” Pidge asked, poking the back of Lance’s head through the gap in the headrest.

“One, because it’s fun and gets on Keith’s nerves; two, I don’t know if you’d still want to go with me if I told you,” he admitted in a quiet voice. They sat, unsure of their decision to go with him. But Lance would never try to hurt them. Right?

“It’s nothing dangerous,” he said as if he heard their thoughts.

“What then? Why don’t you think we would want to go?” Keith asked crossing his arms.

“I don’t know, I guess it’s just kind of a weird thing to bring you to,” he said, his hands were tense on the steering wheel.

“Well whatever it is, I’m sure we’ll enjoy ourselves,” Shiro tried to comfort him. Lance looked sideways at him for a second before his eyes slid back to the road.

“I don’t think so Shiro, I’ll probably be snotting on one of you by the end of it,” he said. They glanced at each other in confusion but decided not to ask questions. They would soon find out what was happening anyway.

“We’re here,” Lance said, his voice suddenly becoming solemn. He flicked on his left blinker and turned into a long driveway. As they climbed up the hill, they could see tombstones on either side of them. Shiro looked over at Lance and stared. In the short time between the party and now, it seemed like Lance had aged years. It was easy to tell why Lance had taken them there now. He pulled the car slowly to the side of the drive and stopped the car, breathing out slowly before opening his door, prompting the rest of them to do the same.

“I always visit my parent’s graves during Christmas, it makes them feel closer to me,” he explained as he pulled a bag out of his trunk and started down the cobblestone pathway between the headstones.

It wasn’t long before they stopped and Lance led them down a row. They huddled together as Lance got to work, dusting the afternoon’s snow off of the headstones revealing his family’s names. They glanced at each other uncertainly. They had no idea how they could help in this situation. It seemed that they were there for emotional support, but Lance had been visiting by himself for years prior to that. If he needed them though, they would be there for him in a heartbeat.

Shiro was about to open his mouth and say just that to the small group when he was cut off by a gentle glow coming from Lance’s direction. They looked over and gasped quietly at the sight.

He had slightly cleaned off the tombstones and in the time that they were thinking to themselves, he had strung small lights across the tombstones. From the glow, they could see his silhouette lightly shaking as he looked down the row.

“These are my parents,” he said quietly not looking back at them. They stepped forward to stand at Lance’s sides. They could see the engraved Rosa McClain and Cortez McClain on the stones.

“My siblings passed away while we were still in Cuba and were buried there but my parents died here, I wanted to get them back to Cuba to joined the rest of the family but it didn’t happen,”

“I’m so sorry Lance,” Shiro said grabbing Lance’s hand in support. Lance gave him a sad smile in return but clutched his hand tighter.

“It’s okay, I’ve had time to heal,” he said. He shook his head slightly. “I don’t think it will ever be completely okay but I can try,”

“Mamá, Papá,” he said looking back to the headstones with a grin. “This is my team,”

“Pidge is our amazing green paladin, she’s the smartest out of all of us even though she is the youngest. She’s so strong. Even though her family was lost in space, she never left us. She's like a little sister to me, just like Sophia was. I’ll always look out for her, just like she will for me,” he said softly. Pidge looked up at him in awe. She knew that Lance was like a brother to her but she was always afraid that telling him that would upset him since he lost his family.

“Hunk is my best friend in the entire world, he would give up anything in order to make somebody happy. He’s helped me so much, he helped me feel happy again after everything that happened and I can never thank him enough for that. I would do anything to make sure that he’s happy, he’s my brother,” his voice was a bit warped this time. Hunk clutched his other hand with a sniffle. His eyes looked down at Lance, but Lance’s stayed firmly planted on his parent’s tombstones.

“Keith may be hot-headed and unpredictable, and we might not get along all the time but he’s one of the most loyal and selfless people I’ve ever met in my life. He looks out of everyone and he cares so much about helping people, even though he has so much about himself that he has to deal with. I am proud to call him my brother, no matter how he sees it,” Keith stared over at him in shocked silence. He had no idea that Lance felt that way.

“You know who Shiro is. I never stopped talking about him while you were alive; he’s my hero but there’s so much that I learned about him. He always puts us before himself even when he’s really hurting. He’s not as serious as I thought and is actually a big goof. I’m honoured to have met him and to call him my brother,” his chin sank to his chest as his eyes squeezed closed. Shiro bit his lip and clutched tighter to Lance’s hand. He knew how much this would be hurting Lance but refused to interrupt him.

It took a moment but Lance brought his gaze back up to look at his parents. By then, there were visible tear marks down his cheeks and he was gasping back small sobs.

“You don’t have to worry about me anymore. I found a family that will take care of me and I can take care of and I love them so much,” he choked bringing a fist up to wipe away the quickly falling tears. The rest of them swallowed back their tears, trying to be strong for the blue paladin.

“I love you guys so so much,” he cried, dropping to his knees, his hands still grasping tightly to Shiro and Hunk. They fell beside him and quickly wrapped their arms around him as he broke down. Keith and Pidge squeezed in the gaps and attached themselves to him as well.

They kneeled on the cold hard dirt as Lance fell apart, quietly giving words of comfort to him. One of the most painful things in life is losing someone held dear to you. Although a loved one can never be replaced, finding the people that are special to you can help fill the gap.

ABC reveals their upcoming 2017 – 2018 primetime lineup, and we’ve got the details, including the announcement about Scandal‘s last season.

Upfronts 2017 continues! Yesterday, NBC and FOX announced their lineup from the upcoming season, and earlier today ABC held their showcase to do the same.

Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, unveiled the network’s new lineup this afternoon at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall in NYC, and there are some shake-ups.

What stands out most to me is the changes to Once Upon a Time. After news that the majority of the series’ regular cast is departing, ABC has still renewed the show for Season 7. There are lots of questions about the nature of the reset for the new season. Incidentally, I do think the Season 6 finale does a surprisingly good job of setting the stakes and creating some buy-in from long time Oncers. In any event, Once Upon a Time will be moved from Sunday evenings to Friday at 8:00pm ET|PT. This time spot is notorious for being a death sentence to TV shows, but there’s still reason to be optimistic (more on that later…).

Also, some changes are on the horizon for Shondaland and TGiT too. The Catch has been cancelled, and while Scandal has gotten a full season order, Shonda Rhimes (Scandal’s creator and executive producer) and ABC confirm that Season 7 will be the show’s last. According to Ms. Rhimes:

“Deciding how to end a show is easy. Deciding when to finish is quite simple when the end date is years away. But actually going through with it? Actually standing up to say: ‘This is it?’ Not so much. So, next year we are going all out. Leaving nothing on the table. Creating this world in celebration. We are going to handle the end the way we like to handle the important things in our ‘Scandal’ family: all together, white hats on, gladiators running full speed over a cliff.”

Gladiators right up until the end!

In addition to their returning series, ABC is also introducing one comedy (The Mayor) and four new dramas (The Good Doctor, The Gospel of Kevin, Marvel’s Inhumans, Ten Days In the Valley) in the Fall.

We can expect ABC to bring us TWO revivals, Roseanne, plus a revamped American Idol (moving to a new network after being cancelled at FOX in 2015). Rounding out the announcement is that we can expect two Live Musical Special Events The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live! (debuting Tuesday, October 3) and Rolling Stone 50.

Iconic comedy series “Roseanne” will return to The ABC Television Network, Channing Dungey, president, ABC Entertainment, announced today. The eight-episode reboot, featuring the original cast – Roseanne Barr (Roseanne), John Goodman (Dan), Sara Gilbert (Darlene), Laurie Metcalf (Jackie), Michael Fishman (D.J.) and Lecy Goranson (Becky) – will air in 2018. Sarah Chalke, who played the character Becky in later seasons, will also appear in another role. Roseanne Barr will executive produce, along with Sara Gilbert, Tom Werner, Bruce Helford, Whitney Cummings and Tony Hernandez. The series is from Carsey-Werner Television.

ROLLING STONE 50

For half a century, Rolling Stone has remained an iconic and important voice in American music, culture and politics.
