@mcyt-yuri-week Day 1: Break!
Read on AO3 here
Forest elves were known to come in many shapes and sizes. Gem was a willowy, slender, waifish, faun-looking elf, herself, with pointed ears and delicate antlers and bright red freckles that matched her hair, and thin, unicorn-like hooves and legs. It did mean that brushing her hair meant brushing her hocks, too, but it was such a natural part of life she didn’t even think about it. Despite her slim form, she wasn’t actually particularly tall, nearly every aspect of her small in one regard or another (except her hair, which was wild and curly and bright flashy red).
But she did have big aspirations! Many of her glade were content to build where they’d always built and live how they’d always lived, but Gem was curious about the border where their forest ended, where it rode up against strange lifeforms ethereal and odd. Gem was sure that as an elf, and a faunish one at that, it was a little rich for her to call something else ethereal and odd, but it was true!
At the edge of their forest, right across a broad river that served as a natural border, weird, brightly colored plants grew, moved in ways that plants shouldn’t move, and Gem swore she saw a ruin in there somewhere.
Now, she wasn’t going to try and stake a territory in the alien landscape. She was a braver elf than most but she would not be doing that, no thank you! She’d just set up her base across the river from it, still in her glade’s cozy ancestral home, shoring up the border of their territory (not that the river needed much help. In terms of forest edges that were in danger of being deforested, this one was generally considered one of the safer spans of area).
And go exploring! Sometimes.
Once she’d made a cute, cozy little cottage for herself, fussed around with her garden a bit, and gotten up some of her favorite pieces of art, she had to finally admit that she was stalling. It wasn’t that she wasn’t curious about the strange place! She was! But it also… seemed kinda dangerous, you know?
But it was time to put on her big girl tunic and see what was goin’ on over there! She cinched her leather underbust around her waist and tucked a couple thin vials of health potion into the sturdy straps, laced up her greaves and gauntlets, corralled her hair back into a loose, low ponytail, and set off! Worst comes to worst, she’d down a health potion and dart back home. Of all the elvish traits she’d inherited, being quick hooved with a keen sense of when to get the heck outta somewhere were amongst her strongest.
But things were off to a good start! The landscape here was beautiful, oh! So much of her wanted to take clippings or seed pods back home with her, though the rational part of her brain knew she should proooobably know a little more about what she was dealing with before she did that. But oh, the pinks and the oranges, the bright vibrant yellows despite autumn still being a ways away, the strange, moving vines and roots that did not radiate any malice or intent. It was gorgeous!
Now she felt a little silly for taking so long to come out here! Eee, she wished she was a better artist, she wanted to show everybody back home how lovely it was here!
And the ruins! Definitely human, though Gem didn’t know of any human civilizations that had lived so close to her glade on this side of the forest. It must be a very old ruin indeed! She pranced through them, light on her hooves, giggling to herself as she went.
The ruins were very, very old, so Gem was quite surprised when she found herself caught in a modern trap.
She yelped as tension snapped around her, a net of string clearly recently-fashioned hoisting her from the earth and leaving her dangling a solid four or five feet above ground.
“Hey!” she shouted, struggling instinctively. Oh this was silly! Now she was glad she was alone! Imagine! Her! An elf! Caught by a simple snare like this! Oh if anyone in her glade saw her like this she would never live it down!
But a modern trap meant a modern inhabitant. Gem’s blood chilled at the realization, and she then redoubled her efforts to get out. She didn’t know what kind of creature would have the mental acumen and dexterity to make a trap and was crazy enough to live here, but she! Didn’t! Want to know!
She yanked at the strings. It was well-crafted, likely spider silk, and Gem’s palms burned where she pulled and struggled. She kicked at it with her hooves, actually managing to snap a couple pieces here and there, but the net was intelligently made and did not unravel entirely at the loss of a few supports.
The bad angle wore at her stamina and the rising panic didn’t help at all. Especially since the plants, which had previously laid about so docile, even friendly, seemed like they were moving towards her now!
“Stay back!” she shouted at them, for all that she knew plants could neither hear nor “think” in the way that people thought. As she might have expected, the slow waves and wiggling of vines and roots went without dissuasion. She sank her teeth into the woven string, gnawing at it with her sharper canines, but the progress she made was frankly pitiful. It seemed she’d snapped all the weakest points, and all that remained was outside her ability to escape.
Finally, she wore herself out, and hung there, limply, trapped in the net as a fly in an actual web. It was hard to breathe as deeply as her body wanted, all folded in half like she was, one hoof and hock sticking out between the netting with one of the strings biting painfully into her skin, but she was too tired to try and wiggle it back in. She was mortified, too, red faced from exertion and embarrassment both. And one of her antlers was stuck and trying to move her head made the hornbed ache!
It was hard to tell how long she hung there. Not enough time for her to fully catch her breath, but enough that when she heard approaching footsteps, she instinctively turned to look. It pulled on her antler and she let out a small, high pitched noise, wriggling in her bindings once again.
“Oh!” came a woman’s voice, “Hyello!”
“Hi,” Gem said, half-breathless and irritable. “Let me down.”
“Well I almost wouldn’t need to!” The woman spoke with a strange accent, one Gem really hadn’t heard before, and she hung aggravatingly juuuuust in Gem’s peripherals. “You went and broke my trap! Not very polite of you.”
“What’s not polite is leaving me hanging here in a net!” Gem shouted, struggling again.
The woman laughed at her, the jerk, but thankfully gave a, “I know, I know, I’m just messin’ with you. Hold still, here, hup!”
Movement, the net swaying, and then there was the release of some mechanism and Gem and the woman both dropped to the ground, the one on the outside of the net landing nicely on her feet.
“Ow,” Gem deadpanned, far less amused with this situation than her captor/savior.
“You’re an interesting looking stranger. Are you from here?”
“I’m from across the river,” Gem said, accepting the help to sit up and detangle herself from the net. “I was just exploring. Are you from here?”
“No,” she said with a bright shrug. “I am living here now though, I suppose. I’m researching the area.”
Gem grunted and started trying to unhook the webbing from her antlers. As she did, she surveyed her new… whoever this was.
By all accounts, she looked like an ordinary human woman (and what indignity, an elf caught in a human trap!). Long, pale brown hair that hung halfway down her biceps. Thick, sturdy-made green overalls and a well made cotton shirt beneath. Big, sturdy stompin’ boots. Everything the woman wore (and netted, apparently) seemed to be fashioned for durability.
…Gem had been staring at her strong arms long enough she’d made out fine little hairs on her skin. Probably should look somewhere else.
“Thanks,” she said, less irritable now that she wasn’t strung from a tree, “for helping me down.”
“Awh, sorry for snatchin’ you up in the first place! I’m trying to catch one of the little scuttlers, the one I’ve been researching got out and it’s been awful trying to get it back again.”
“Scuttlers?”
“That’s what I’m calling them! Here, come inside, I’ll show you my research lab.”
Now, Gem was an adult woman. She was smart enough to know it wasn’t always wise to follow a stranger to a secondary location. Especially after that stranger had already caught her in one trap.
But this stranger had also let her out of the trap. And she was a pretty woman. Surely pretty women had no nefarious purposes. And besides, Gem, like, owed her or something. It’d be rude not to go.
“Sorry again about your trap,” she mentioned, glancing at the broken remains before following.
“No worries! It was getting old, anyway.”
“Mm. Hey, what’s your name? I don’t think we’ve been properly introduced.”
“Oh yeah! I’m your friendly resident Pearlo! Call me Pearl,” she said cheerfully, whirling around to outstretch her hand.
Gem took it in hers, strong, callused human fingers clasping firmly around dainty elvish ones.
“Call me Gem,” she echoed.
“Hey, listen to that! Gem and Pearl, we get one more and we’ll have a whole jewelry box.”
Gem laughed, and noticed that Pearl had not released her hand in order to resume walking her inside. They were holding hands now. Pearl didn’t even seem to notice it, so it was probably natural and nothing important to her. It should’ve felt natural and unimportant to Gem, too, she’d held lots and lots of hands before and it had never meant anything particularly special.
But, well, you see, Gem was not immune to Pretty Lady.
She followed her into one of the ruined structures, which was not so ruined on the inside, and listened as Pearl discussed her research. The “scuttler” was some sort of guard dog for one of those ancient underground cities, barking whenever passerby tread too loudly and alerting the alarm system, and eventually a huge beast. Gem listened with one cheek propped up on her fist, watching Pearl walk about her laboratory with the occasional “mhm” or “oh really?” to keep her going.
It was when Pearl said a particularly silly joke with a toss of her hair and a cock of her hip that Gem realized, “Oh, you’re trying to impress me!”
Pearl shocked still, mouth hanging open and eyes blown wide, and Gem giggled to see her blush.
“No, no,” she rushed to follow up, “keep going.” She tilted her head so her bright curls spilled over her shoulder and smiled with a flutter of her eyelashes. “It was working.”

@mcyt-yuri-week day 2: AU
Since college has been eating up my life, I've decided to put them on a college au, sorta.
Katherine's an art major with a part-time job as a florist. She's here to give her girlfriend some flowers to cheer her up a bit.
I'm not really certain what Gem's majoring at. Maybe double majoring in Political Science and Biochemistry? Either way, she needs a break I believe.

Pearl is dressed in her midnight blue suit, her silver rapier at her side. She swings Gem around the dance floor, the string quartet playing a jaunty tune.
She looks beautiful tonight. The royal seamstress did a good job on her dress, which fans around in a whirlpool of green.
They step in time, Gem's heels clicking on the floor.
Pearl's pulse is racing. Her heart thuds in her ears, eyes scanning the ballroom for any threats. She's certain Gem can feel her hands sweat, as they grasp light together.
The ballroom is full of masked people, gossiping about, no doubt, the Queen and the Advisor dancing together. They do not understand. She needs to stay close.
"Relax," the Queen murmurs to Pearl. "You're too tense. They'll notice." She swallows, and nods imperceptibly.
They twirl across the floor, Pearl focusing on the way Gem's hair bounces in the chandelier's light. Her antlers are adorned with little flecks of gold, and Pearl imagines them tonight, when this is over, curled up in bed. Her head will be on Gem’s chest, and she’ll be able to hear the soft thump of her heart.
Gem spins them off to the side, walking with Pearl’s arm in hers, making her way to the throne. The crowds part before her ornate green mask, detailed in gold. It is quite intimidating, Pearl thinks. It's fierce, gold shaped in such a way it looks like teeth.
"Stay close," Gem murmurs. Pearl thinks the mask brings out the sharp emerald of her eyes. "We don't know what he's planning."
Pearl would really like this night to be over actually. Or she'd like to go back to dancing.
She breathes in, spotting Impulse by the throne. He's dressed in  his deep black armor, outlined in jagged gold. His axe is on his back too, sharpened to perfection.
The Executioner nods as he scans the room as well, searching each face for threats.
Gold, Pearl thinks, is a very big symbol in their kingdom. Her own suit is adorned in gold stitching, leaves twirling around her wrists and neck. Impulse's own armor has gold up and down his arms and legs, with an "i" carved above his heart.
The Queen has claimed them, is what Pearl thinks. She's taken them and she's laid her claim on their souls.
They reach the throne. As she sits, Gem motions for Pearl to lean in close. “I see them,” she whispers. “Don’t look. Back left of the room, next to the drinks.” The Queen smiles, and presses a chaste kiss to the edge of Pearl’s lip.
“Let Impulse know,” she whispers, as gasps erupt from around the room. “Get them out of my kingdom.”
Pearl takes a step back, and bows. “As you wish, my Queen,” she replies.
She does not look back as nods at Impulse and draws her silver rapier.

@mcyt-yuri-week day 5: rarepair
I mean, it's already a rarepair to begin with even by s2. But this is like a personal rarepair week for me and my purpose is to try and spread my propaganda.
More ramblings under the cut:
Now, full disclaimer: I don't actually ship their s2 counterparts. Because:
I headcanon s2 e!Kath to be an aroace lesbian who couldn't even tell if someone is flirting with her. And I actually couldn't picture her ending up with anyone weirdly enough. Not even with Shelby.
Gem's canon this season just doesn't make me ship her with anyone. She has another life in Hermitcraft and the empires server is just very different for her.
But, that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the princess alliance. Heck, I jumped on the ship to be romantic the moment I watch them become business partners. Because, come on, they're both princesses. One of them's a monster slayer, the other one's not allowed to fight and couldn't defend herself. Like, hello??? Princess Katherine here to rescue Princess Gem? Hell Yeah!
But, but, but, I couldn't remember when but there was an incident in Joey's Skyblock series where people were discussing the possibilty of Kath being AroAce. I watched the clip and I was on board. I loved the idea of AroAce Katherine. (Other people's reaction to Aro!Kath I wasn't fond of tho but I shouldn't put that here.) And I found the premise of two people being attracted to her (Joey and Shelby) while her not being attracted to either of them funny.
But at the same time, I also like her being a lesbian or bi. So, it ended up with her being AroAce Lesbian.
Now, this was before I started shipping KathGem. So, what's the issue? Kath's an AroAce Lesbian and Gem's Bisexual. Nothing wrong with putting them in a relationship, right? True.
But, here's the thing. Through the duration of the season, I personally can't see them get together.
With Katherine, she was too focused on curing her kingdom's curse to even think about dating. And by the time she got her lands cured, Gem......left. Meanwhile, Gem didn't wanted to get too attached. She knew she was leaving for good ones she's done. Maybe she did had a thing for Katherine but decided not to do anything about it.
Now she's back in Hermitcraft, never to look back in the world where she met the princess who was cursed from the day she was born.
And that too is yuri
So, yeah.
But, maybe one day I could explore different AUs regarding s2. Especially with some KathGem if I could.

@mcyt-yuri-week day 3: hurt/comfort
It's been a while since I've watched that arc. But yeah, this is what I had in mind. I kinda wished we had corrupted gem longer than one episode if I'm gonna be honest. I might expand on that in an au instead. But for now, have some angst.

Cleo opens their eyes blearily. The roof needs another layer of paint.
Detective Pearl Moon rests her head on their chest. She can feel her little breaths on her bare skin, and the warmth of her skin as they curl around her stomach.
Last night was… something. Cleo yawns as she snuggles under the covers and closer to Pearl.
"Mrph," says Pearl, her face tiredly looming up. "Morning already?" Cleo presses a kiss to her forehead. "You don't have to go home straight away, do you?"
"Nah," she replies sleepily. "BigB can handle it without me, and I think Grian is getting the hang of running the bakery on his own." Cleo laughs, and wraps her arms Pearl. They nuzzle into her neck.
"Stay for breakfast," she murmurs.  Pearl laughs, and Cleo can feel the thunderstorm in her veins. "Okay," she replies.
There are days when the haze over her face gets worse, where Cleo can't look her in the eyes because of the dripping water color, but Cleo thinks they'll always love her the same.
Cleo traces the scars on Pearl’s face. “I’m sorry,” she says quietly. She seems to wake up a little more. “Sorry for what?” she asks. “It wasn’t your fault. It wasn’t anyone’s fault.” Cleo sniffles, tears springing to their eyes. “Still,” they say. “I’m sorry.”
Pearl smirks, but softens into a smile as she caresses Cleo’s cheek. “I thought you weren’t the kind of person to say sorry,” she says. “I’m not,” they reply. “But when the rose crumbled, and I thought you had died…” They swallow, and melt into Pearl’s arms a little more. “I regretted yelling at you the night you left. I regretted telling you. If I hadn’t done that, maybe we would be here sooner.”
“And maybe we wouldn’t have this,” Pearl replies. “Everything would be different, but I’d still have you.”
Cleo exhales. The watercolor drips. Pearl snuggles in closer.
“Let’s go back to sleep,” she murmurs. “Okay,” Cleo replies. They pull the covers up more. “Okay.”

Day two of @mcyt-yuri-week ! Because I'm on an au kick apparently, this is both AU and post-canon from my mcytblr aufest fic They say All the World's a Stage . I had a chapter where I accidentally wrote them gay, and I thought I would expand on it a bit more.

Pearl lays in bed, her suit torn to shreds. Queen Gem is sitting in a chair next to her, carefully peeling the remains of the beautiful midnight blue cloth.
Everything hurts. The explosion had ripped through the wall, and Pearl had vaulted over people to the Queen. She remembers wrapping her arms around Gem as the heat had torn through her. Then… nothing.
"You're such an idiot," Gem mutters as she inspects the skin. It's red and blistered, and the skin around the left side of her face is full of pain.
She coughs. "Well," she replies weakly. "I couldn't let the Queen die. You're too important to Eden."
"There's a reason Eden chose me to be her Queen," Gem replies, applying a salve. Her hands glow faintly green, as she moves them down Pearl's body. "She won't let me die so easily. You, on the other hand…"
Gem hesitates, before applying the salve to her eye. "You don't know that, Gem," Pearl says. "You don't know when the blessing of Eden will run out." Her hand is cool against Pearl's eyelid. She doesn't think she'll be able to see Gen's beautiful face with it ever again.
A knock on the door sounds. "It's me," comes Impulse’s soft voice. "Come in," the Queen orders.
The door opens silently, revealing a short man dressed in beaten up armor. "Hey Pearlie," he says. "I brought you soup."
"Thanks Impy," Pearl replies. She pauses. "Why're you still in your armor?" He chuckles, placing the steaming bowl on her bedside table. "Paranoia," he says. "They might launch a counter attack. And with you bedridden…"
Gem grumbles from where she's wrapping the last of Pearl’s wounds. "You're both idiots," she grouches. She sniffles suddenly. "I can't run this kingdom without both of you."
Impulse exchanges a quick look of panic with Pearl, who tries to sit up. Her ribs scream, but she moves to sit at the edge of her bed. Impulse moves to stand on Gem's right.
Pearl takes her hands. There are little flecks of gold in her antlers. She thinks about Eden, and magic, and claims. "I swore I'd always stay by your side," she says. Her soft hands are cold in Pearl’s. She brings them up to kiss it softly. "I do not intend to leave."
Impulse kneels. "I swore I'd always be here too, my Queen," he says. Gold still gleams above his heart. “My axe will always be there for you.” Pearl nods, "You'll have us until we die," she adds.
Her emerald eyes stare at Pearl darkly. “Impulse,” the Queen says. “You can go to bed. Or check the guards stationed around the palace.” He starts to protest, but gives up as soon as he sees her focus is all on Pearl. Good luck, he mouths as he exits the room.
“Pearl,” she says. Pearl thinks about gold and magic and claims. “You can’t do that again. You can’t keep throwing yourself in danger for me.” Her antlers are flecked with gold, just like the necklace burnt into Pearl’s neck. “Eden’s blessing will keep me safe,” she continues. “But you-!”
She cuts herself off as Pearl surges forward in a kiss. Her lips are dry and cracked, Pearl notices. Gem tastes like wine. Pearl kisses deeper, moving to sit on Gem's lap and wrapping her arms around her neck.
Pearl thinks of gold and magic and claims. Gem tastes like wine and hope and love.
They part, and Pearl presses her forehead to Gem's, as they both gasp for breath.
"I can't lose you," she whispers. Gem's eyes are emerald green, flecked with little slivers of gold. Droplets of tears color the corners blue."I love you," she murmurs, rough and real and desperate. "I love you, and I can't lose you."
"I can't lose you either," Gem replies, voice low and raspy. "I- I don't want to see you go." She wraps her arms around Pearl’s waist, moving her head to rest on her shoulder. Pearl clutches the base of her neck, terrified to let her go.
“I don’t want to die,” Pearl says. “But I would do it if it meant you would be safe.” She watches as Gem gasps for breath, gulping the air like a fish gulps water, and feels her earthquake under her fingertips.
Gem's dress is streaked with soot. "I can't lose you," she repeats. "You've all I've got left." Pearl shakes her head, ignoring the way it makes her ribs feel like they're being torn apart. "You've got Impulse," she says. "You have the rest of the Court."
"But it won't be you," Gem says. Her lip quivers. "I won't have you."
Pearl thinks again of gold and magic and claims. Have Gem says. Like she’s something to put a claim on. She's got her wrapped tightly in her fist.
She thinks as she hugs Gem again, that she's gotten herself into a half dug grave.
