Fate/Feminism

Fate/Stay Night, like other Visual Novels/Animes with Harem aspects, has a male main character and so the extent to which the story seemingly revolves around him can be seen as undermining what Feminist potential could come from having such a large cast of female characters.

However I think there is a lot of Feminist potential in the Fate/ franchise, maybe not always intentional from the original creators, but it’s there.

Spoiler Warning here, since I can’t really talk about any of this without spoiling stuff.

One of the reasons I don’t mind the supposed spoilers that come from watching Fate/Zero first is because I really see no downside to knowing Sakura and Rin are sisters from the start. I watched Unlimited Blade Works not knowing and just wondered why Sakura got so much attention early on only to be mostly forgotten. (I also didn’t really know the whole it’s only one route of the Visual Novel aspect.)

I think it majorly helps to watch Unlimited Blade Works Episode 0 knowing about Rin and Sakura, because then you fully get that the reason Rin saved Shirou is for Sakura. The love one woman has for her sister is why the male MC is even alive.

And that’s just one of a few reasons that Shirou’s importance to the story is seemingly only because he happens to have connections to all these important women. While in a more typical Fantasy/Harem hybrid it’s more like the women only matter because the super special Jesus-Kun main character likes them. Indeed you’ll notice in Fate/Zero that all four major Waifus of Fate/Stay Night were part of the Holy Grail War story well before Shirou was, they are all in the first episode of Fate/Zero while we don’t meet Shirou till the last one.

Outside of the main four, I find it interesting that the other two female servants, Rider and Caster, are both women from Greek mythology who have been the subject of a lot of Feminist criticism. Their stories are pretty clearly originally based on Misogynist archetypes, but women have sought to reclaim them. A YouTube channel specializing in Nasuverse Lore videos has done videos on Medusa and Medea. I feel like Fate’s takes on them definitely draws on the Feminist analysis of them. I can’t comment much on Medusa yet having not gotten to see a version of Heaven’s Feel. But Medea in Unlimited Blade Works is pretty interesting, calling her a Witch seems to be her Berserk button, and in her flashback episodes she laments being again passed around, vilified and discarded by men.

Fate/Prototype is a short OVA that is based on what the original idea for Fate/Stay Night was before it evolved (makes me think it’d be cool to see some Cartoon based on the abandoned versions of Star Wars). It’s notable that it had a female lead and a male Saber. This female lead seems more like a proto-Rin then a female Shirou. But it’s definitely interesting that that is where the idea for Fate/ started.

I have praised Fate/Zero a lot, including calling it the best entry point into Fate/ for potential new fans. But my one issue with it is it’s not as good at it’s handling of female characters. It’s cast is overall much more masculine, with Saber herself being the only female Servant this time. And worst of all there is a lot of fridging, the worst of it being how we’re supposed to sympathize with Karia after he strangled the woman he claims he loves.

But Saber/Artoria is still great, and I love Irisviel. And I also like Maya, and I like that Irisviel is okay with Maya and Kiritsugu's relationship. And I think you could definitely see a Feminist commentary in Caster’s obsession with Jeanne d’Arc.

The currently airing Fate/Apocrypha is difficult to comment on, I think I’ll understand it better once I can watch it Dubbed.

I don’t know a lot about Grand Order, I’ll be seeing the OVA when it’s Dub drops. What I do want to comment on briefly is that I heard it has Chevalier d’Eon, and depicts them as Non-Binary. I would prefer d’Eon be a Trans-Woman as she was historically, but that is definitely better than what the Le Chevalier d’Eon anime did, pretty much removing the Queerness altogether.

I really like Fate/Khalied Liner Prisma Illya. I know it’s very fanservicey and trashy (I hear there was less Lewdness in the Manga). But it’s still a Magical Girl show and does what we western Feminists like best about Magical Girl shows. I’m going to quote a comment from that Dark Magical Girl article on AnimeFeminist, left by a user named GreyLurker.

"Fate/Kalieid liner is one of my favorite series in part because it has it's feet set in both sides of the issue. As part of the Fate universe it's naturaly stuck with a lot of dark elements but the Magical Girl elements directly oppose that. For a lot of things Illya can achieve the impossible because she believes in the ideals of a Magical Girl. She flies because Magical Girls fly. It's just obvious to her even if other characters tell her it's not possible.

Confronted with morality choices like "You can save your friend or you can save the world. Which will you choose" She essentially says "Screw that, I'm a Magical Girl so obviously I'm gonna save both and get the happy ending" She will save everyone because that is what Magical Girls Do.

and that faith lets her achieve the impossible."

Prisma Illy is also predictably subject to the most Yuri Shipping of any Fate/ show, because Magical Girls and Yuri naturally go together. But in the original VN Saber/Rin is technically canon thanks to to the Threesome Ending. And there is a solid basis for shipping Rider and Sakura. And in Fate/Zero we have shipped Saber/Irisviel.

Other Nasuverse franchises like Tsukihime, Kara no Kyoukai and Canaan are also worth discussing. But that would make this post way too long.

So, the Fate/ franchise has it’s issues. But there is definitely a lot of value in it.

Domestic 2 What’s the wedding like? Who attends?

It was intimate and so tiny, they didn't even have to send out invitations. Everyone they wanted there was involved in planning it, and before Rin convinced them otherwise, it was supposed to be a court wedding and no more.

Kay and Sétanta(just turned legal age) were their witnesses to the signing, and since the judge was Kay's friend, the two managed to get first witness to their first kiss as a married couple.

After the signing, while Kay and Sétanta had turned to the exit, Arturia tugged on his wrist just gently enough. They stopped in the hallway and she brought out a small red navy blue box barely the size of her palm.

When he opened it, it was matching wedding rings. Platinum, in the traditional style, as both of them had always looked better in white-silver metals. Cú hadn't expected it, as they'd only spoken about signing, but she pulled him down and showed him their initials engraved in the inside of each band.

They'd skipped on the vows since it wasn't a church wedding anyway and as he claimed, he wasn't the best at words, so the fact that she'd still show him how much he meant to her in the form of pure rings that would never fade...that made him kiss her right then and there, a tear falling from his eye.

Their friends and family were waiting outside the court in a chaotic assortment of cars and bikes and a color scheme with no sense of coordination, and the newlywed couple was promptly escorted out of the city to a cliffside cove in a hidden beach property that looked like it had just been refurbished.

Arthur and Merlin were the only other people from Arturia's family that were there. Her FSN Found family was there though, crying. Cú brought only his brothers, his honorary brother Ferdiad, Arjuna, and Scáthach kind of just showed up.

The girls were there to dress Arturia up for the reception, trading her formal dress for a specially-made (courtesy of Medea) wedding gown of all white. And even though they were already married, Alter still quietly shed a tear, because it finally settled in that she was his and his alone. That night was the most his brothers had ever seen him smile.

The reception was uneventful in a good way. No corny messages or anything like that. The most they did was share a kiss just for show and cut the wedding cake, and the rest of the evening was just a hang-out with friends over food and alcohol.

After everyone cleaned up and went home and Cú had thrown out his suit jacket to who knows where, Arturia prepared to drive back to their shared apartment. Smirking, Cú procured a small key from his suit pocket and pressed it into her palm.

"Ya wanted a quiet place, right?"

It suddenly clicked why the reception wasn't at a wedding venue, but at a pretty house just outside the city. Arturia looked around like it was for the first time, taking in the view of the sea, the simple pieces of furniture. She should have guessed why Rin and Illya were being so secretive about the place they reserved.

Arturia managed to hug her husband for about two seconds before she cried into his chest, because here in this little house with him, it felt like home.

Regarding the term Saberface

There was more research I wanted to do, but I have enough evidence without devoting a section to pixiv search results.

Anyways, most people should be vaguely aware that the Fate series’ mascot, Artoria Pendragon, has her face on more than just promotional material. Several characters have the same face as her (Nero Claudius, Jeanne, Jeanne Alter, Lakshimibai, Okita Souji, etc.) not to mention her different versions (Alter, Lily).

The origin is Takeuchi, the original/lead artist for Type-Moon. In Tsukihime, the visual novel the pair made before FSN, Takeuchi’s favorite character was Hisui, a maid. When drawing Artoria for FSN, he made her face similar to Hisui’s--a trait he kept in the update art for Tsukihime.

So all Saberfaces are really Hisuifaces.

In the early Fate/stay night days, there were a limited amount of Servants and it was easier to call each by their class name instead of True Name (it also helped with spoilers). So around the time of Fate/Extra (2010) you have Blue Saber (Artoria), Red Saber (Nero), Black Saber (Artoria Alter), and White Saber (Lily). Fate/Apocrypha (2014) gives us the next Saberface with Saber of Red (Mordred) and Jeanne, but she was already alluded to having the same face as Artoria back in the Fate/Zero novels (~2006), but no class. Finally, in Koha Ace EX (2014) we get Sakura Saber (Okita Souji). Calling the specific Saber by their color also helped with spoilers re: True Names.

All were drawn by Takeuchi, or specifically stated to look identical to Artoria (Mordred, Jeanne). Then FGO (2015) happened and we had our first female* Saber, Altria (Attila the Hun) who was drawn by huke instead of Takeuchi. So the meaning of Saberface shifted to any Saber-class Servant drawn by Takeuchi. And then we reached critical Saberface mass with the inclusion of Mysterious Heroine X, a joke version of Artoria who goes around and slays other Sabers. Her NP gives her a damage bonus to Altriaface Artoriafaces. That’s right, Artoriaface, not Saberface.

“But that’s just a case of bad translation! Look even in the FGO wiki used Saberface!”

JP also specifically uses アルトリア顔（Artoriaface ) instead of セイバー顔 (Saberface).

Type-Moon declared Saberface now meant any Servant (regardless of class) who was or looked like Artoria Pendragon and changed the name to the much more direct Artoriaface. However, thanks to the FGO wiki (and Fate fans being Like That), Saberface was never retired in the English-speaking fanbase.

so tl;dr: Saberface (fan term): A Saber drawn by Takeuchi (or Jeanne/Jalter/etc) Artoriaface (official term): Any variation of Artoria Pendragon or any character who resembles her. FAQ

Q: Does this mean I have to use Artoriaface instead of Saberface? Nah. This was more an essay on the evolution of fan terminology than anything else. Q: No, Saberface means any character designed by Takeuchi because I don’t like his art style. Well, that would make Mesuda and Medea Artoriafaces, which is silly. Any personal opinions on Takeuchi and his art style aren’t relevant. Q: Wait does this mean Lancer Artoria and Lancer Artoria Alter aren’t Saberfaces? Yes. They are neither drawn by Takeuchi nor are they Sabers. Whoever, using the definitions above, they are naturally Artoriafaces.

Nobu, back in Gudaguda 1 you had this reaction:

You LIED! Nobu only had this strong reaction against Uesugi Artoria. She didn't care about Sanada Medusa or that general Medea was filling in for. In life, Nobu suffered a decisive defeat against Uesugi and would have ceded control of that certain territory Kenshin hadn't suddenly died.

Based on Nobu's reaction, Uesugi Kenshin is a greater enemy to her than the Tiger of Kai. But for Nobu to find an excuse to send Artoria back that quickly, it has more to do with the vessel being Artoria than with the Uesugi part. This is based in Koha-Ace where Nobu walked away from fighting Mori - her vassal in life. Chacha said she has this habit of letting people she likes do whatever they want. Is it not ridiculous that Nobu, a 4th wall breaking character would complain about Uesugi being a woman? Isn't it also a strange coincidence Artoria showed up as her OG self (not counting the class) while FGO in general avoid focusing on her? Nobu's cognition of Uesugi latched onto Artoria since Nobu doesn't think Artoria is someone she could defeat or want to fight.

Nobu has 'Artoria' in her Spirit Origin. In the script event fight, she only fight with the ArtoNobus. I don't count the Mecha since it's Nobukatsu's doing. Interestingly, Nobu has this to say about him:

And of course she made an excuse to show up, filling in for Artoria. We ended up having to fight 2 Archers and Nobu two times (challenge quest included) thanks to that. Nobukatsu made Nobu fight for him, not participating in anyway. The ArtoNobus on the other hand only fight together with Nobu and Salter. A very round about way to have the Nobutoria fight as a pair. It's also a quite irritatingly subtle demonstration of how intertwined the Nobutoria pair is. Who hauled her back to Chaldea? X. She wasn't beaten up by us and was finding Sabers to fight. She's bound to wander to where Nobu was due to the Saber ArtoNobus. Of course there's an explanation that she got sent back after defeat.
