synopsis: you know the legend about putting flowers beneath your pillow on the night before midsummer, and how it will predict who you will spend the rest of your life with? well, that’s the idea that this story revolves around. we have boyfriend mingyu, flowers, and strawberry shortcake.

a/n: i wrote this when it was actually midsummer, however, I never got to editing it and now here we are. still summer tho so ig its fine. also no, were not going to discuss how its basically an au where everyone is swedish. idk how else to explain the -no questions asked and midsummer is something we have been doing for years- thing.

legend has it that the night before midsummer is the one night, out of the entire year, where all the magical powers that exist in our universe are especially active. it is said that you can even predict your own future on this very night. your romantic future to be specific.

because of this, tradition states that one can, on the day before midsummer, pick seven different kinds of flowers and lay them under your pillow as you go to bed. if you do happen to dream of a person during this night, with the flowers laying under your pillow, it is said that you will spend the rest of your life with this person.

of course, you just had to do it. there was no way you wouldn’t. since you had heard about this magical night, and the flowers that would help you find your person by just laying underneath your pillow as you slept, you had been doing it every night before midsummer however, there hadn’t been a single night during all of these years, where you had dreamt about anyone. not even when you had tried your hardest to think about your crush at the time, right before you went to sleep, had you managed to dream of anyone.

nevertheless, there was no way you wouldn’t go ahead and do it this midsummer night too. especially since you had a very different romantic status right now, compared to all previous years. this year you weren’t single. this year it wasn’t a one-sided crush, it was genuine love. this year you had mingyu.

you had been together with mingyu for a little over eight months at this point. he had confessed his feelings to you late fall last year, over some hot chocolate that he had prepared for one of your study dates. since you had been crushing on him for a couple of months before that, there was no doubt about how you two would proceed with your relationship after that point.

anyways, midsummer was tomorrow, and you had spent the morning with mingyu rolling meatballs and baking cake layers for the buffet that you would be serving at the midsummer party you two were hosting the next day. you had decided to spend the weekend in your family's summer house, which meant that the kitchen was rather small. this did not stop mingyu though, no matter how many times he bumped into the counters surrounding him that came even closer to him because of his giant stature.

mingyu was just picking up the oven mittens you had gotten him for his birthday (the ones with the kittens on them, that made him look so adorably dorky) to take out the last of the cake from the oven. the entire house smelled like cake, strawberries, and meatballs. you watched as your boyfriend put his best effort into cooking as you sneakily sat and watched him adoringly while eating the strawberries you had the responsibility to clear of any green stalks.

you didn't only adore him as you supervised his movements, even if the way he looked, in the apron hugging his waist so perfectly, was fairly distracting, it would not distract you on this day.

you had a mission, and it had to be completed.

"so could we go out to look at the field that we're going to tomorrow tonight too?" you asked, as unsuspiciously as you possibly could.

luckily, mingyu was too busy checking if the cake was done with a wooden stick to notice how bad your acting actually was. he glanced back at you with a slightly questioning smile. "alright, why though?" he asked nonchalantly.

"well, I thought that maybe we could decide on which flowers to pick tomorrow, to save time you know," you tried to explain. "and we also need to see if the place we chose last weekend still has good flowers that are alive," you added after a couple seconds with a dumb smile, trying to make him see past how dumb your excuses actually were.

with a shrug, he answered "yeah sure, if it's something that you wanna do, of course we should do it." he chuckled a bit at how giddy you got as you hurriedly tried to finish the strawberries that still hadn't been cleared from green parts.

once the kitchen was as clean as it would get with the two of you exhausted from the actual cooking, you both got into the car and headed over to the field from which you had chosen to pick flowers on the midsummer day. it was a short drive and you played loud music as you drove down the country roads and watched the landscape shift from green and yellow and deep brown. the sun was setting and you looked over at mingyu as he drove, singing his lungs out to a springsteen song, with the breeze from the rolled-down window gently shuffling his hair. letting out a small chuckle, you let your hand fall into the one he was resting between the seats, holding his hand as you began shouting along to the song with him, receiving a bright smile and a small kiss on your hand.

once you got to the flower field, you whipped out the scissors you had brought and went straight into the field to look for the best flowers you could find. helping spirits with dreaming of the person you will spend your life with wouldn't be an easy task, and you felt the need to choose the loveliest ones, with the hope that they would help with the mission of getting the one person you wished for to appear in your dreams.

you were running around like a madman, bending down to look at flowers that caught your eye, deciding within a second if it was worthy or not, and running away to the next one once you had made your decision.

in the meantime, mingyu had been looking at you with a huge smile, lighting up his entire face. how could you be so cute while acting so weird? he asked himself as he felt his entire being become happier by the second. all you had said was that you would get some samples, and he couldn't even question it. why would he? you had your reasons, even if they were irrational to literally everybody but you. he had chosen to just go with your antics, and look at you running around, looking absolutely beautiful. why would he do anything else?

"hey! can you help me?!" you exclaimed over the field when you found yourself being stuck at having six perfect flowers and feeling like you had looked through the entire field. help was needed, and who was a better fit to help your dream come true than the man you wanted to dream about himself?

"of course. with what?" he responded.

you held out the flowers to show him " I want one more, and then we can go home, can you help me find a really pretty one?"

"sure" he said with a smile that made you weak in the knees as the golden light of the sun hit him just perfectly and he began looking around in the field filled with beautiful flowers.

it only took him a couple of minutes to choose a flower that looked good enough according to mingyu. you had wandered off in another direction and he came running up to you as he called on you to look at his finding. his hair bouncing and the sun glinting in his eyes as he jogged over.

the flower wasn't completely perfect, but it was indeed beautiful. you might've been a bit biased since the man handing you the flower looked like a freaking puppy, running up to you to show you the tiny flower in his big hand.

"oh, it's beautiful gyu, you did fantastic baby." gving him a big smile and added a "thank you." as you gave him a peck on the cheek, and placed the flower that he found with the others in your hand.

he blushed and gave you a very proud look as he straightened his back and took the hand that wasn't holding flowers into his. intertwining his fingers with yours as you leaned your head on his arm. you held up the bouquet of the seven flowers and smiled to yourself. this would definitely do. and hopefully, this time, you would actually dream a midsummer night's dream.

when you got back to the house you ran in to find some type of ribbon to tie the bouquet together.

"why do you need a ribbon though?" he asked as you looked through cabinet after cabinet. "wouldn't putting them in a vase be good enough?" "no, that won't work." you stated as you were caught up in your search. "why not? what are they for then?" "uhm, nothing special, I just want a ribbon around it, that's all, okay? now no more questions."

you froze up at his question and hadn't thought of a better answer than what you had just said. instead, you tried to deflect and keep him busy.

"do you know where there could be any ribbons though? could you maybe help me find some?" you asked with rather desperate eyes. "ill check the top compartments of the closets for you," he said, accepting the task but looking over his shoulder as he walked away, beginning to feel slightly suspicious of your behavior. he didn't know what you were up to, but you did look rather cute as you rummaged through the house, so he let it go and helped you instead.

"thank you!" you yelled to him as he went to look for the ribbons as you had asked.

he came back with a pretty burgundy-colored ribbon that you tied around your flowers and showed him proudly.

"beautiful baby," he said with a smile as you blushed. "just like you," he added with a small kiss on your cheek. you could only giggle at his comment as he sprinted away to the bathroom to get ready for bed.

you shook your head to stop your blushing and giggling, you still had an important mission to finish, and now was the perfect time to make the final arrangements. lifting your pillow and then carefully placing the flowers beneath it was the last thing you could do yourself before it was up to the midsummer-magic to do its part and help you predict your own future. you had just placed the pillow on the flowers as you grabbed the pillow and lifted it again, revealing the flowers that you had just put there, only slightly smashed by the weight of the pillow. sighing and shaking your head at how annoyed you were getting at your own inability to just leave it be as you placed the pillow over the flowers yet again. before you could lift the pillow one more time, you hurried away to wash up before bed.

once in bed, you were a bit worried about completely resting your head on the pillow, as you didn't want the flowers to be smushed entirely. you never know what could be the thing that goes wrong when it comes to magic, and you certainly did not want to risk anything this time. nevertheless, the warm summer night air combined with the steady sound of mingyu breathing next to you lulled you to sleep soon enough.

you woke up because of the alarms you had set ringing insistently, please why do I have to wake up already, just let me sleep damnit. you thought, snoozing the first of your many alarms. as you laid there, falling back asleep, you sunk back into thoughts of what you had just dreamt and oh my god, it had actually happened! your eyes flung open the instant you realized that you had really dreamt of someone this time. mingyu! it had actually been mingyu in your dream!

you woke up immediately after realizing what you had dreamt and looked over at your boyfriend sleeping by your side. mingyu hadn't even heard the alarm, it seemed. you didn't want to bother him, so you decided to tell him later in the day when he was more awake, and aware of what the hell you were about to ramble on about. magic, and spending the rest of your life with someone, might not be the easiest thing to take in completely, especially first thing in the morning.

instead, you laid down again, cuddling into the back that he had facing you, making him the little spoon and trying to cover as much of his back as you could with your body. it went so-so, but it did wake him up a bit which, you realized, was good. since you both actually did have to get up and get everything ready for the party, that would be happening in... you checked the time on the clock on his wrist... oh shit, only two hours?!

there hadnt been any time to spare as you both ran around the house trying to both get ready, fix the buffet, and set the table. this of course also meant that telling mingyu about your dream would have to wait until after the party.

your friends had the decency to be a little late so that you and mingyu had almost everything ready for them once they got there.

his good friends wonwoo and seokmin had both been invited as you had grown close over the past couple of months. wonwoo brought his partner and seokmin brought his newly adopted puppy, as his partner, unfortunately, had to work that day. you had also invited your best friend and their partner. all of you together made up a party of just about eight people plus the most adorable puppy you had ever seen. right away you picked up the tiny pup and carried her with you until seokmin had to let her take a walk to not disturb your dinner with unwanted messes. seeing you with the fluffy puppy in your arms, giving it all of your attention, had mingyu very distracted. zoning out of conversations as he couldn't help but adore you peppering the puppy with kisses.

during the entire night, you felt the need to finally be alone with mingyu grow bigger and bigger. you kept looking over at him, smiling shyly at him every time your eyes met as you thought about all the ways he could possibly react to what you wanted to tell him. magic in a midsummer night's dream had confirmed your desire to stay with him for the rest of your life, however, this wasn't something that you two had actually talked about that much before. and if you were honest with yourself, it's not something you spring on someone out of nowhere, and while also claiming that magic had anything to do with it. of course, you knew what you had wanted even before today. but for some reason, the legend had played a very important part in your life up until now, and you wanted to tell him about how thrilled you were over what it had meant for you that it finally happened.

all scenarios of the revelation of your feelings didn't end happily, but many of them did and you were pretty certain that the worst ones wouldn't come true.

mingyu, however, had no idea what the hell you were thinking. you were acting strange, but cute (he literally always thought you were adorable), but something was off. did you need something? he couldn't place the behavior. sometimes you came off as flirty, which he rather enjoyed, but other times you just acted as if you had something to hide. why would you do those two simultaneously? did you know something he didn't? wrapping his mind around it was too difficult and trying to communicate with just small glances was the best option he could think of, since you still had guests over, and had to play the parts of the hosts for a couple more hours.

after finishing off the meatballs, and the potatoes, and the salmon, and the multiple bowls of strawberries, and to top it all of the strawberry shortcake of course. a couple bottles of beer and snaps went down smoothly alongside it too. nevertheless, after that was all finished your friends had finally begun taking their leave. hugs and kisses, mainly for seokmin's puppy, were distributed amongst the friends as you and mingyu sent them off in two cars, with the only two people who hadn't been drinking as drivers.

once the cars were no longer visible, you both went over to sit down on the now-empty couch, facing the woods and the sun setting through the trees. both of you sighing in contentment at the sudden stillness surrounding you.

you weren't sure how to approach the subject, and acted a bit awkwardly, not really being able to look him in the eye and sitting a couple centimeters too far away for either of your liking. mingyu was of course sensing your awkward mood, or well, he could see the obvious fiddling and the looks you were giving him and decided to take it into his own hands to figure out what you wanted.

"are you alright baby?" he started, as you looked up at him in surprise at his sudden confusing question.

"yes, of course! do I not seem okay?" you asked back since you hadn't noticed how confusing your behavior must have come off as all day.

mingyu smiled softly with relief "it's not that you didn't seem okay... it's just that you have been acting a bit weird today." he had a worried look back in his eyes. "did you need to talk to me or something?"

"oh, maybe I have been acting a bit off..." you admitted reluctantly. "a little" he responded with a chuckle. "well, I did wanna talk to you about something" "what?" "just, a dream I guess" "okay... was it a good dream?" he asked with a smirk playing on his lips. "I guess it depends on you a bit. however, it wasn't the kind of good dream that you're thinking of though!" "okay, okay, tell me about it then" he put his hands up in defense as you looked at him with a small pout. "first I kinda need to tell you about this legend that I heard about as a kid about like midsummer and stuff..."

mingyu raised his eyebrows at this "a midsummer legend?" he asked curiously as he wrapped an arm around your waist to bring you in closer.

"yes, okay, so there's this legend that I heard of when I was a kid. it is said that you can foresee your own future on the night before midsummer," you began explaining, beginning to get excited as he was showing interest in what you wanted to tell him.

"oh, really? that's so cool!" he exclaimed at the news.

"yes, very cool, but anyhow.." you wanted to continue telling him now but instead you were interrupted by mingyu lifting you onto his lap so that you were sitting with your legs dangling off of his legs into the air beside the couch.

even though you were the teeniest bit distracted over the closeness of the position, being close to him like this and just talking was very comforting and you simply went on with your story as he kept taking in every bit of your face, shining in the warm summer light.

"as I said, you can predict your future, but only if you pick flowers and sleep with them under your pillow. that's a rule, you need seven different kinds of flowers, or else it won't work." you continued, very adamant at getting to the part about your own dream even though your fears hadn't completely left your mind. "oh, so that's what you were doing yesterday with the flowers and the ribbon and everything!" mingyu interrupted as he finally connected the dots. "yes..." you laughed a bit embarrassed. "but it's not any type of future" you continued explaining. "oh, what kind of future then?" "it's said, that the person you dream of, is kinda like, the person that you will spend the rest of your life with." you finally mustered up the courage to say while blushing like a tomato due to the embarrassment of what you had just told him.

"and... did it work??" mingyu asked with big, curious eyes. "did you dream of me my baby?" he asked cockily with a smirk adorning his beautiful face. you looked down, still feeling embarrassed, but instead somehow managing to look almost a bit sad. this was of course not on purpose by you, but it did send mingyu into a spiral of self-doubt. with huge sad puppy-dog eyes he started questioning what you had dreamt.

"wait, did you... did you not dream of me? did you dream of someone else?" he asked the questions very hesitantly, prepared for the answer to slap him in the face as he scanned your face for any hints of the truth. all you could do was stare at him in shock.

"did the dream tell you that we won't be together?? if that's the case... I don't believe in magic." he switched his demeanor from very saddened by the thought of you not thinking you would spend the rest of your lives together, to completely dismiss the notion of that being possible.

you continued to just look up at him in shock due to the sudden rush of emotions that he was going through, even though you hadn't actually said anything. the shock soon turned into a big smile and a giggle though.

"baby, no! magic, is definitely believable..." you said with a giggle. "I did dream of you," you reveal as he looks at you in shock. however, the shock he was experiencing, quickly turned into pure happiness as the meaning of what you told him dawned on him.

"of course you did." he said with his cocky smirk back and him pulling you into his chest and locking his lips to yours.

you could've died on the spot, feeling both incredibly embarrassed but also filled with ecstasy from the kiss and from the thought of him being so set on spending the rest of his life with you. nevertheless, there was no way you wouldn't tease him a bit, simply because he was so quick to become so self-assured after being so sad over nothing.

"omg you really do wanna spend the rest of your life with me!" you giggled and kicked your legs a bit in the air.

mingyu lifted his hand to your face and held it in his hands. you let your head relax into his steady hands and slowly stopped kicking your restless legs. he smiled as you opened your eyes, and you felt the heat on your face from seeing him watching you with such admiration and love in his eyes. his golden-brown eyes, almost sparkling in the light of the sunset.

"well yeah, you're the freaking love of my life," he said, lovingly, as if it was the most apparent thing in the entire world. as if it was the only thing that was for sure. your heart doing flips in your chest at the words.

"I wanna be with you for the rest of my life too..." you responded as he leaned in to kiss you, still cupping your face in his hands. at that moment he couldn't help but smile into the kiss at your words.

"I know, and we will." he whispered, as he pulled away slightly before he crashed his lips onto yours yet again.
