Sleigh Ride
Tumblr media
AN- @spnchristmasbingo bingo square- sleigh ride!
Jensen x TV daughter
“Jensen!” YN arrived at the Ackles’ home for a Christmas celebration.  He opened the door and hugged her.
“How’s my favorite TV daughter?”
She backed away and put her hands on her hips.
Clearing her throat, she said, “Only TV daughter, thank you very much.”
“True,” he smiled. “Come on, the kids are waiting for you.” Jensen moved out of the way to let her in from the cold.  YN took off her gloves that now dangled from her coat.  “Kids, let’s go!”
“Wait, I thought we were watching Christmas movies?”
As the Ackles’ kids ran toward the door, they squealed with happiness at the sight of YN.
“We’re going on a sleigh ride!” One of them yelled excitedly.
“Jensen! You knew I wanted to do that.” YN beamed.
“Exactly.” He winked.

His Thoughts on Therapy 2
Tumblr media
Masterlist of Masterlists
Warnings: cussing, violence, hurt, emotions, therapy, homelessness, VERY hurt characters.
Words: 2400
Thanks as always to my boo @cherryblossomflowers for the help.  Hope you like this, girlie!
AN- Enjoy! Maybe grab tissues?
“So what’s up your butt, Winchester?” YN sat on the steps of the office building. Dean stopped when she acknowledged him.
“I’m sorry about earlier. I am just going through some stuff, and I was about to explode.” He towered over her as he came closer.
“Ah.” She kicked her feet in the air off the side of the staircase.
“What’s on your mind, T?” Dean knew her session was right after his. “Don’t you have session now?”
“Don’t want to.” YN didn’t dare look at him.
“That’s what I said this morning to my brother. But he made me come anyway.” Dean grinned. “You should go in. Sky will make you feel better. I’m sure you know it too.” He extended his hand to help her up.
“I got it, thanks.” YN maneuvered herself to a standing position and limped up the remaining stairs.
“YN!” She turned. “What happened?”
“I’m fine, Dean.” Now it was her turn to walk away from him without explanation.
Dean texted YN the next day to check on her.
YN
I’m fine, Winchester.
Dean
I can practically see you rolling your eyes at me.
YN
Go away.
Dean
We’re texting, where would I go? ;]
YN
You know what I mean.
She didn’t text back after that. When he saw her at therapy, she was withdrawn and quiet.
“Did something happen?” He slowly sat next to her on the steps.
“Tires were punctured this morning. I hate it here.”
“Wow. Seriously bad luck.”
“Can you stay for my session today? After yours?”
Dean’s jaw dropped but he didn’t want to show his astonishment.
“Uh, sure. I am done for the day at work.”
“Thank you,” she whispered.
Dr. Sky smiled as the two walked into her office. “Dean, we just finished…?”
“YN asked me to stay for her session. We met outside a few months ago and I’ve seen her around. YN was acting weird today and asked if I would stay for her session.”
The doctor looked from Dean to the girl.
“Is this right?”
“Yeah.” YN nodded.
“Alright then.”
They participated in small talk for the first few minutes.
“So, why is Dean here, YN? Is there something you felt you needed extra support for?”
“No, not really. I just wanted him here for my session. And to thank him. Thank you, Dean, for being so kind to me. I know I’m an ass sometimes, but you still decided to be my friend.”
“Sure. We both have helped each other, T.”
“I think I may know why YN wanted you here, Dean.”
His eyes snapped up to meet hers.
“Do you mind if I give Dean some insight, YN?”
“Sure,” the girl shrugged.
“YN doesn’t trust a lot of people, especially males. Males older than her. From getting to know her, I would hypothesize that you did something very nice for her, and now she trusts you. Would that be accurate, YN?”
YN nodded.
“I’m sorry, Winchester. This was stupid,” YN thought she was stupid for even thinking of being so open with Dean.
“T, it’s fine, come on. Relax.”
“Fine. I don’t go to KU, okay?”
Dean cocked his head to the side.
“What?” Dean gasped.
“I ran away from home. Let’s just say it wasn’t a healthy situation. And then I find an ass of a guy who actually asked how I was doing.” She rolled her eyes.
“Can I punch someone for you?” Dean gritted his teeth.
“Stand down, Mister Winchester.” Dr. Sky put a hand up.
“You remind me of my older brother.  I think that’s why you don’t scare me. He was fifteen years older than me.  You kinda look like him too.”
“Was?”
“I haven’t seen him in a long time.  Mom and Dad said he couldn’t see me anymore because he was trying to get me out of that house.  They threatened to get him arrested for something stupid.  So… he left.”
“Damn.  So, you have no idea where he is? Why don’t you go see him?”
“No, no clue.”  YN wiped away a tear.  “I’m sorry, Dean.  I didn’t mean to make you involved in this.  I’m sorry, Doctor Sky.  This was stupid.” She stood and started to exit.  Knowing that he had to get her attention, he shouted.
“Tissues!”
She jumped and turned.
“Sit down.”
They finished their session, but both Doctor Sky and Dean noticed how closed off she became.
“Let’s go,” Dean practically dragged YN to his car.
“What?” She tripped over her own feet as he pulled her along.
“Get in.”
“What?” YN jerked her arm out of his grasp.
“Get in, we need to have a conversation.” Dean growled, frustrated.
YN slowly sat in the car.
“Why didn’t you say you weren’t safe? Someone you know could have slashed your tires.  It may not be a random thing, don’t you get that?”
“It WAS random! My family has no idea where I am.” She crossed her arms.
“Fine.  What do you need?”
“Huh?”
“Job, food…?”
“Both?” She sighed.
“I got an opening at the shop.  You know how to sweep floors?”
“Yeah…” She eyed him curiously.
“Great.  You start tomorrow at 7am.  I’ll text you the address.” He pulled out his phone. “Now, get out of my car, and I’ll see you tomorrow.” Dean winked at her. She rolled her eyes.
“Bye, Dean.”
The next morning, she hopped off the bus across the street from Winchester Auto.
“You’re late,” Dean walked past her as she entered.
“It is 6:55am.”
“If you’re not early, you’re late.” He gathered up random nuts and bolts on a counter and handed them to YN.  “Sort these.  The breakroom is down the hall.  You can put your stuff in there.”
Okay…” she huffed.  “Good morning to you too, Winchester.”
“I’m treating you like anyone else around here.  Hurry up,” he walked her to the breakroom and watched her drop her things.
“How long is my shift?”
“Til five.”
“I don’t have a lunch…”
“I brought you some.  Lunch is at twelve.” Dean walked to the fridge, opened it and took out the milk.  In a cabinet, he reached for some cereal.  “This is why I said you were late.  Come in early and you can eat before you start your shift.  I get here at six every morning.”
“Wow.” She smiled.  “Thank you, Dean.” YN whispered.
“You’re welcome.  Ten minutes, then it’s time to work.”
“Yes, sir.”
“This is YN, she is our new rover.  We all know how to be gentlemen in here, so let’s keep it that way.  Any ogling eyes will have their pay cut, you understand me?” He glared at all of the men in the room.
“Yes, boss,” they all responded.
YN stayed quiet the whole day, doing what Dean asked her to.
“You want a ride home, kid? I saw you took the bus this morning.”
“No, it’s okay.  Thanks, Winchester.”
“What’s going on?  You’re not telling me something,” he read the uncertainty and lie on her face.
“I don’t have anywhere to go…” she looked away.  “I lied about having an apartment.  It wasn’t mine…”
“You’re homeless?  And now you don’t have tires?  Where is your car?”
“Guy bought it.  I needed the money.”
“Let’s go,” he took her elbow and practically shoved her in the car.  “Where is your stuff?”
“In my backpack.”
“Damn, T.”
“You don’t have to feel bad for me, ya know.  No one has ever cared anyway!” YN screamed.
“Well, you should!  This is what it is for someone to care, okay!  Having empathy is caring.  I don’t feel bad for you, just for the record.  I’m angry that you didn’t have somewhere to stay, and you felt like you had to hide it from me.  You had no reason to.”
“I’m sorry I lied.” YN sighed and looked out the window.  Dean started the car and drove out of the parking lot.
They pulled into the driveway at Sam’s house.  Dean saw that he was already home.
“Inside, now.”
“Grumpy old man,” YN whispered to herself.
“SAM! GET YOUR BUTT OVER HERE!” Dean’s voice bellowed throughout the house.
“WHY?” Dean heard him yell back from the kitchen.
“I need you! Hurry up!”
Sam rolled his eyes.  He carried his water bottle with him to the entry way.
“Oh, hi, YN.  What’s going on?”
“YN needs to crash until further notice.  Can she take the guest bedroom?  She’ll be on her best behavior, yes?” Dean glared at her.
YN nodded and bit her lip.
“Is everything okay?” Sam looked from her to Dean and then back to YN.
“Yes.  I just need a bed for a few days.  I won’t cause a problem, I promise.”
“Okay.”
“You’ll be here at least a month.”
“DEAN!” She stomped her foot.
“You barely have any money and no belongings.  How are you going to get a roof over your head in a few days?  Two paychecks and then you can go, you hear me?”
“Ugh.”
“Excuse me?” Dean stepped closer to her.
“Fine.”
Two days later, Dean came into the kitchen to find YN wiping down the counters.
“You know, you don’t have to clean all the time.”
“I’m a guest living in your house for free.  I should still contribute something, and right now, all I can do is clean.”
“Will you sit down and be still for two seconds?” He yanked the sponge away from her.  “Sit.” She harrumphed and plopped herself down at the kitchen table.
“What, Dean? I’m trying to make sure I do my part. And stop bossing me around, would you? I’m not a kid!” She crossed her arms.
“Why should I trust anything you say? You cried in therapy and then drop a bomb on me about how your life is not as you presented it. Now, I get that you’re running away-“
“WATCH IT, DEAN WINCHESTER!”
“You came to a new town to start over. So start over. Don’t run from what’s going on in front of you.”
“Hmph.”
“You don’t get to tell me about how to deal with you when you lie.”
YN shook her head, rolling her eyes.
A FEW YEARS LATER
“DEE?” YN ran into the house. “Sam?”
“What, T?” They walked into the living room from the kitchen.
“I -“ she sniffled. “I found my brother.”
“What?”
“Found him on social media. He… he died though. I saw someone tagged him in his obituary.” Her face was red and puffy.
“Wait, what?” His mouth opened. She ran into his arms. “Oh, T.” He sighed.
After many minutes of crying, she quieted and wiped her eyes.
“I’m sorry, Dee.”
“It’s okay.”
They sat down on the couch and he pulled her into his side, even though she resisted.
“I know you’re not a hugger, but you need one. Relax,” Dean whispered. He felt her muscle tension release. “Good job.” They sat silently for a while before he looked down and saw her asleep next to him. “Oh, kid. I’m so sorry.” Dean said in his head. Not being able to move because of YN leaning into him, he fell asleep.
When he woke up, YN sniffled and wiped her eyes again.
“YN?” He looked down at her.
“I need some alone time.” YN stood up and walked out the door.
“Don’t go home,” he chased after her. “Stay here. I want to keep an eye on you.”
She turned around.
“I want my blankets, and I want my stuffed animals. I don’t have that here. I moved out, remember?”
“Fine. Go upstairs, hide under the covers. Sam will go get some of your things on his way home.”
“No, I’m fine-“
“NOW.” Dean said from his throat.
She swallowed hard. YN respected him enough to know he was serious even though she didn’t understand why he wanted her to stay. YN hung her head and walked back into the house.
“Come on.” She followed Dean to his room. He pulled out a pair of sweats and a shirt. When he offered them to her, she slowly accepted them. “You can go hide now,” Dean winked.
Later that evening, Dean woke up to sounds in his room.
“YN?” He rubbed his eyes.
“I’m going to hurt you for stealing my girl,” a woman hissed.
Dean tried to get up and defend himself, but his body was under his blankets, rendering him unable to fight back. Something hit his head.
“Ah!”
He fought his way out of his sheets, but he didn’t have time to stand up. When Dean put his arms up to protect himself, she slashed him with something, cutting his arms and his cheek.
YN woke up hearing screaming. She raced to Dean’a bedroom where the noise was coming from. He was on his back with his hands behind him. A very prim and proper-looking lady stood over him with something shiny and skinny going toward his eye. Dean saw YN and indicated to his right. Looking to her left, she saw a lamp. The lady heard YN and tried to stab Dean’s eye with the object. Dean screamed in pain. YN saw the uninvited guest push it onto his eye. He screamed. YN kicked the back of her knee, knocking her off balance. They fought until YN missed a beat. Her opponent pulled out a knife and stabbed Dean in the chest.
YN ripped the lamp cord out of the wall and chucked the object at the lady’s head. Splintering after it hit her, some of the pieces sprayed all over Dean. He whined. The lady lay incapacitated on the ground. YN pushed Dean to roll over and untie the bandana around his wrists. Crying from his injured eye, YN took her flannel off and put it up to his face. .
“It hurts!” He made incoherent noises in too much pain to say anything else.
“I got you.”
YN called for Sam when she heard the door slam. He barreled up the stairs. Seeing the scene before him, he pulled YN away from Dean and the lady below her.
“No!” She yelled.
“Call 911!” Sam shoved his phone into her chest. “Dean,” he reached his older brother, and he took his hand. “Oh, Dean.”
After Sam started screaming, realizing Dean was so hurt, YN was on the phone with 911, she looked down at the woman bleeding out on the ground.
“Mom?”

Dean x Reader
Dean x daughter!reader
Tumblr media
“No, Dad. Mom said I could a few weeks ago.” Lexie stood with her feet wide and crossed her arms.
“I did tell her she could go.” YN walked up behind him and wrapped her arms around his waist from the back, her chest hitting the middle of his back.
“But I’m finally home!” Dean raised his voice, exasperated and exhausted. Having been gone to a car show with Baby had taken up his whole week in Las Vegas. He came back to their house in Kansas a few hours previous.
“It’s not my fault you were I’m Vegas linger than expected!” Lexie tried to walk past her parents but YN stood in front of her.
“You do not disrespect others in this house. Leave for your friend’s house now before I keep you here. Go.” YN moved to the side so that Lexie could pass them. Dean turned to face her. “Before you say anything,” she started. “You’re home, and think of all the fun we could have without her here,” YN smiled.
“I wanted to spend the evening with both of you,” Dean said sadly but not dismissively.
“We can still have a good night, honey,” YN frowned.
“I know. I can just tell how much things have changed. She’s grown up, I’ve gotten old. What’s to love?” Dean crashed on the couch and put his head in his hands.
"You once watched me spill doritos on the floor, eat them, and you still came over and kissed me after you brushed your teeth. If that's not love I don't know what is."
“Sorry, YN.”
“I know you’re stressed. Come on, let’s have a good night.” YN led him up the stairs toward their bedroom.

“Asshole! Don’t effing touch me!” YN was yanked out of the room by the Dallas Police Department away from her latest foster parents. “I’m gonna haunt you!” She screamed at her foster dad as her caseworker met her at the door.
“Hey, YN,” she calmly addressed the teen. “Come here, we got you. It’s okay. They’re not worth this fight. We’re getting you out of here.” Sarah offered a weak smile.
“When the hell are you going to find me a foster family that doesn’t want to hurt me, huh?” Sarah froze at the venom spewing from YN as she was guided to Sarah’s car by a police officer.
“This isn’t my fault. I’m doing the best I can. She is a child reacting to her environment. This is the nature of the job” Sarah told herself.
“YN!” The sweet older couple from across the street frantically ran over to the child. “You okay?”
YN stood from the seat and let herself be enveloped in their arms, wrapping her arms around them both. The two had become like doting grandparents checking on her, making sure she was well fed and saw some familial love in her life.
“Mimi! They’re moving me again! That man is evil,” she said, referencing her former foster parent.
“Here, can I have a pen and paper, please?” The older women looked at Sarah. The caseworker tore off a page from her notebook and retrieved a pen from her bag. “This is my cell phone number. Call us if you need anything - I mean ANYTHING, okay?” The couple offered one more hug and watery smiles.
“Thanks. I’ll miss y’all.”
——-
The caseworker pulled up to a large house in a gated community. YN had never seen, let alone visited, anywhere this nice. Sarah watched as the tightness in YN’s face relaxed in awe of her surroundings, a moment of fear flashing across her eyes before they turned stoic and blank. The corner of her lips twitched, quirking down then pressing together in a sour expression.
“You ready, kiddo?” She asked..
“Whatever,” rolling her eyes, the fourteen year old’s face settled into her usual mask of hardened, begrudging, acceptance. “This place is way too nice for fosters. Probably just some rich jerks looking for a charity case.”
“Stop, YN. Give them a chance.”
“Not like I have a freaking choice, do I, Sarah?” YN growled at her caseworker. Sarah took a calming breath.
“You’ll be okay. They are a nice couple. You might actually know them.”
“What!? I don’t know anybody who lives in a mansion.”
“It’s not a mansion, now come on.” Sarah got out of the car and walked to the passenger side to escort the girl to the door.
YN fidgeted with the tattered cuffs on her sleeves as the caseworker knocked on the massive front door. When the door opened, YN’s eyes widened into giant saucers, brows jumping to her hairline as her jaw dropped at who was before her.
“Dean?” She whispered. “From Supernatural?”
The man chuckled, nodding. “That would be me.“ A blush creeped up his cheeks as his face dipped, eyes lifting to meet hers, “You must be YN. I’m Jensen. Would you like to come in?” His eyes dropped back to the floor before he pivoted to open the door wider, lifting his free arm and nodding his head in towards the house in invitation. “Come on in, then. Hi, Sarah, nice to meet you again.”
“You too, Mr. Ackles.”
Snagging YN’s duffel bag off of her shoulder as she walked passed him, he grunted. “You got rocks in here or somethin’?” Jensen laughed. YN reflexively tensed at the sudden movement, but she smiled tightly and offered a thankful nod as her shoulders slowly dropped.
Jensen plopped her bag inside the door before turning fully to introduce Danneel. YN lifted her chin slightly and pursed her lips in acknowledgment but did not respond verbally.
“YN...” Sarah prompted, nudging the girl lightly.
“Hi, Mrs. Ackles. It’s nice to meet you.”  YN said coldly with a mocking smile. A perfectly flippant affectation of a warm greeting.
“Would you like something to drink? Water? Sweet tea?” Danneel offered.
“Please,” YN whispered, eyes sparking in interest at the mention of sweet tea.
“Coming right up, dear.” Danneel smiled warmly.
“Go have a seat on the couch, YN. I need to talk to Mr. Ackles for a moment,” Sarah commanded, directing her towards the sunken family room.
“Fine.” YN huffed as she walked over to the living room and flopped onto the couch.
Danneel giggled at the exaggerated display of ever-suffering teenager-dom as she brought YN a cold glass of sweet tea and another warm smile before leaving her to meet with Jensen and Sarah.
“S’comfy.” YN grouched to herself.
“She is very resistant to change. YN is really a sweet kid at her core, but she puts on a front. Don’t give up on her too quickly. Please. You need to give her time to warm up to you, and it may seem painstakingly slow, but I swear she’s a good kid and she’s worth it.” Sarah frontloaded Jensen. “Ready to sign some paperwork?”
“Absolutely. Let’s go into the kitchen so that we can sit at the table.”
YN sat up sharply as she caught movement out of the corner of her eye.
“Hi! I’m JJ! I’m five!” A precocious little girl ran up to her. YN relaxed back into the couch, rolling her eyes with a grimace at the intrusion.
“Hi,” YN responded tersely.
“What’s your name?” JJ bounced closer on the balls of her feet.
“YN.”
JJ jumped onto the couch, sitting on her knees facing YN, still wiggling with excitement.
“How old is you?” She asked, scooching closer until her knees were against YN’s hip.
“I’m fourteen, can you go away?” YN griped and tried to scoot away as the small child leaned up and into her face.
“YN!” Sarah reprimanded, dropping onto the couch next to YN for a final chat.. “JJ, can you go see your mommy and daddy for a minute?”
“Okay,” she ran off to the kitchen.
“Don’t, Sarah. It doesn’t matter anyway. It’s not like they’re going to care about me. They’re just like everyone else.” YN said, crossing her arms with a resigned sigh.
“I have a feeling that they may will take whatever your crap that you dish out and give it right back to ya, hun. Now shape up so that I can leave with you behaving.” Sarah stood with a sarcastically put-upon sigh, followed by a small giggle and caring smile for YN.
“Fine.” YN responded in kind, sighing with an epic eye-roll before the corner of her lips quirked up in a small smile.
———
Over the next few weeks, Jensen and Danneel stayed nearby but didn’t intrude on YN’s privacy.
Danneel looked up and smiled, spotting YN as she walked down the stairs for breakfast, as she perched against the kitchen island with Zeppelin on her hip. “Good morning, YN. Want some eggs?”
“Yes, please,” she responded. YN  spotted Arrow off to the side of the kitchen, just as she tripped over a toy and started crying. YN looked at to Danneel in concern for the toddler, but realized that her hands were full of breakfast ingredients and Zep.
“I’m coming baby.” Danneel soothed, sighing a defeated breath as she tried to empty her hands quickly without dropping or breaking anything.
“I can get her. Ya know, if you need a hand.”   YN offered with a shrug.
“You are an angel, thank you!” Danneel offered her appreciation, relief evident in her whole posture as she put the last of the food next to the stove.
“Come here, baby,” YN cooed.
“Well that’s new…”, Danneel thought.
Arrow crawled to YN, and the older one scooped her up. “You’re okay, sweetness.” YN smiled as she wiped away Arrow’s tears.
“Impressive! You’re really good at that,” Danneel praised, gesturing toward Arrow.
“Lots of practice,” YN returned. “I was the oldest at the my first foster home”
“Did you like taking care of the little ones?” Danneel broached cautiously.
“Well, yeah. But it’s not like I had a choice. They made me take care of all of the kids, so I couldn’t really do my own thing, y’know?”
“I’m sorry, sweetie. I appreciate the your help though.”
“These guys are pretty easy,” YN shrugged smiled.
“Then I need lessons from you, because I am exhausted,” Danneel chuckled, leaning onto the kitchen island towards YN.
“Nah, you’re doing okay. Come on, Arrow. Let’s give Mommy some time with Zep.” YN smiled down at the little girl on her hip as she twirled and started towards the family room.
“Thanks, YN!”
Arrow and YN played in the living room while Danneel finished cooking. Jensen called YN via FaceTime while she was holding Arrow.
“Hey, YN! Oh, hey, Rowey!”
“Hi, Jensen. Arrow had tripped and got a booboo, so we are making her feel better now. Right, girly?” YN smiled.
“What? Is she okay?” He demanded.
“Umm…” YN shut down from his tone and change in attitude.
“She’s fine, Jay. Stop acting like a brute and being rude,” Danneel hollered from the kitchen behind YN.
“Oh, okay. Good. Sorry. Thank you, YN for helping her. Anyway, how have you been?”
“Fine.” YN shortly responded, more abrupt and distant than before.
“How’s school?” Jensen continued prodding, hoping for more than one word answers without realizing the lasting impact of his tone earlier.
“Good.” YN shrugged into the camera.
“Do you ever answer in full sentences?” He growled, frustrated.
“JENSEN!” Danneel scolded him as she ran to YN and tore the phone out of her hand. “Can you please take the twins outside for a minute, YN?”
“Sure.” YN grumbled as she led Zeppelin and Arrow out onto the porch.
“WHAT in the HELL is wrong with you?” Danneel bit out through gritted her teeth, seething.
“She doesn’t talk! I was just trying to have a conversation with her.” Jensen argued defensively.
“Do you know how hard I have worked to get her to open up to me? She has been offering up a lot more of herself lately, but you push her and gripe about how she isn’t talking enough for your liking. Why should she? You’re acting like an oaf!” Danneel groaned. “If you don’t have anything constructive to say to her, then shut up, ya hear me?”
“Babe-“
“I’m serious. Promise me.”
“Fine. Okay, Dee. Work your magic. But she can’t just open up to you... We’re a team and a family. I want to be a part of it, too.”
————-
“You don’t know what you’re doing! Get in the freakin’ car, YN,” Jensen yelled at his foster daughter. YN froze, shying her body away from the angry adult submissively holding her breath, and glancing at him out of the corner of her eye to gauge his intentions. “I have had enough of the lollygagging.  Stop being so mopey and get in the car.” Jensen could not believe her. On his one of only two days that he has off this month, he chose to spend the day with only her. Yet she was not responding at all to what he was telling her to do. She just would not listen!
YN quietly skirted into the SUV, curled into herself on the seat, and stilled. “Ya know, I spend a whole day with you and all you keep doing is slow down and not even say thank you. You’ve barely spoken, and you were rude to the employees in that girly store I took you to. I love you, YN, but we gotta make these days count. I’ve got stuff to do at the brewery tonight, and I’m not around a lot to take care of it.”
“Right, of course, sorry.” she conceded, holding back tears.
“Finally. Thank you,” he growled.

“Dee! We’re back!” Jensen opened the door for YN and stepped inside.
“Hi, YN!” JJ ran into YN’s arms.
“Hey, cutie!” She accepted the little girl’s gesture.
“No love for me?” Jensen crosses his armed in fake anger.
“Nope!” JJ laughed, pretending to ignore him. “Did you go see the doctor? Do you feel better? Did you get a shot? I don’t like shots.”
“We’re perfectly fine. No shots today,” Jensen assured her. He looked at YN. With pursed lips, she prayed he did not give JJ any more information about what kind of doctor they had gone to.
“Yeah!” JJ pumped her fist in the air.
“Come on, time to eat!” Danneel tried to distract everyone from the secretive, awkward conversation.
———-
Over the next few days, YN became more reserved. Danneel thought she had reverted back to her previous tendencies.
“YN,” the mom started, “you okay?”
“Yep. Why?” She looked up from her homework at the table in the kitchen.
“You’re just quiet is all.” Danneel tiredly smiled.
“Just thinking,” the girl sighed. “Did Jensen tell you?” YN felt the weight of her secret.
“Tell me what?” Danneel turned down the burner and sat at the table.
“About therapy?” YN put her pencil down.
“He isn’t allowed to share anything from therapy, sweetie. It goes against confidentiality.”
“Oh,” YN put her head in her hands.
“You are more than welcome to share, YN. It’s just that JENSEN can’t tell me.” Danneel kept an even voice. “Would it make you feel better if you told someone?”
“Yeah,” YN admitted. “It’s just that I don’t want you to hate me,” she continued looking away, head in hands.
“Nope, not gonna happen,” Danneel said plainly. She moved so that she was below YN, looking straight into her eyes through the spaces between her fingers. The mom waited.
“He hurt me. Really bad.” YN moved her hands and sat up. Danneel maintained eye contact.
“Oh yeah? That must’ve been hard.” Danneel reminded herself not to pounce like a mama protecting her baby.
“Yeah. I mean, I’m okay. Sometimes the memories come back. The doc knows, but no one else does. I’m afraid if I tell you, then Sarah is going to take me away, and-“
“I’m so glad he followed you here from Dallas. One thing at a time.” Danneel soothed.
“I want to tell you. I am scared of Jensen. And I feel bad. He isn’t bad-“
“But he is a boy,” Danneel nodded, realizing she had been intimidated by any of the men that were in her world.
“Yeah. I love Jensen, but-“
“I love you too, sweetheart.” Jensen slowly walked into the room.
“I- I think-“ YN stuttered. She quieted.
“It’s okay. You don’t have to tell me. Promise.” He walked over to her and stopped.
“I- I want to, but I don’t think I can tell you all of it. Not right now.” YN looked away.
“That’s fine, YN.”
“Are the babies…”
“They’re busy, it’s okay,” Danneel smiled. Jensen sat down with the two females.
“Okay, umm. Well, one of my foster parents hurt me.  A lot. I was the oldest. He blamed me for stuff.”
“Oh yeah?” Danneel prompted the teenager to continue.  She narrowed her eyes at Jensen, telling him to not talk. Jensen nodded, understanding that talking to Danneel would be easier for YN.
********* start
“Yeah, I thought it was okay, but after a while he-” she sniffled. Everyone stayed silent. A few seconds later, YN continued.  “He had me join a softball team.  Sarah said I was staying a while, so my foster dad wanted me to join a club or something.  He became the coach since it was a city league thing.  But he kind of started telling me it was my fault if we did bad.  I was nine when it started.  He made me do stuff.” YN halted. Jensen and Danneel tried to hide their anger toward this unknown man behind their sympathetic smiles. Danneel reached for YN’s hand slowly, and the teen accepted her touch.  Jensen started to make contact with YN’s back from behind, but Danneel shook her head while YN was looking at the floor.  Instead, Jensen stood up and walked in front of her cautiously.  He sat on his chair with a foot of floor space between the two of them.  Jensen offered her a reassuring smile, telling her to continue without any physical touch, because he didn’t want to scare her. “He just- it never got super bad, okay?  I’m okay.” Spewing out the words, she tried justifying the man’s actions.
“We know you’re okay, but it’s alright if you tell us that you WEREN’T okay,” Danneel assured her with a hand going up and down YN’s arm.  “Promise,” she smiled.
“He would hit me and other stuff.” Her face turned red.  After a deep breath, she continued.  “I protected the other kids as much as I could.”
Jensen gritted his teeth. Breaking his unspoken promise to his wife, he said, “That was very unfair of him. You didn’t deserve that,” Jensen told her with unwavering confidence in his voice. “Do you understand that?” Jensen’s voice was gentle but assuring.
“Sort of, I guess.  I mean, I shouldn’t have lost all those games, and I should have taken care of the kids better, but-” as YN spoke, Jensen swallowed.  “I have been here and watched you guys.  I’m not scared of you.  Well, sometimes, but that’s ‘cause I am not used to all this.” She motioned with her finger.  “You are… calm, I guess.”
“Listen to me.” Jensen waited for YN to meet his eyes. “You didn’t deserve any of that- no matter what you did or didn’t do.  You hear me?”  He raised his eyebrows, emphasizing his point and waiting for an audible response.
******* end
“Yeah.  This is the first time I’ve been able to relax and… just be me.”
“Well, we don’t want anyone else, YN.  You’re perfect.” Danneel continued rubbing the girls arm in a soothing manner.  As the conversation died, the wife and mother wanted YN to feel validated.  “Do you know how Jensen and I met?” YN looked up at Danneel.
“Dee-” Jensen tried to intervene, knowing where she was going with her story.
“It’s fine, Jay.  She needs to know.” Danneel returned her attention to the teenager.
“You were both on the CW, right? I’ve seen One Tree Hill,” YN assumed.
****** start
“We were, but we met at my show’s wrap party. I was at a One Tree Hill event with the other cast members and crew.  A few other CW stars, including Jensen, were there too.  Someone cornered me.  He was really creepy and saying inappropriate things.  Maybe he thought no one would notice or think that I wouldn’t fight back.  I’m not sure, but Jensen just happened to see what was going on.  I think he saw how scared I was, so you know what he did?” Danneel’s grimace changed to a remembering smile.
****** end
“What?”  YN squinted in curiosity.
“Jensen pretended to be my boyfriend, asking where I had gone.  When the guy wouldn’t leave, he told the guy that if he touched me, Jensen would punch his lights out.”
“Really?!”  YN gave a questioning look.
“Yep, and he stood by my side the rest of the evening.  Wherever I went, he was right there to make sure that no one else bothered me after that prick left the party.  He’s watched out for me ever since.” Danneel reach over to mess up Jensen’s hair.  He smirked. “Jensen won’t ever hurt you.  He is a guy, but he saves girls from monsters, he is not one, I know from experience.” Bold for prompt
————-
Over the next few weeks, YN became relaxed around the family. Family members came over to celebrate Danneel’s birthday. The teen met and mingled with them, as well as those she had never seen before.
“Look at her,” Donna whispered to Jensen with a smile.
“I know. She’s never even met some of these people. What happened?” He laughed.
“You did,” his mom replied.
“What?” He turned to read the expression on her face.
“You taught her to be conversational and be confident. Any time she was near that man, she shriveled into herself. Look at her!” Donna pointed toward YN leading a conversation between the Padaleckis’ and some of their friends.
“She- she told us some stuff-” Jensen started. He took a breath. “Excuse me,” the son sniffled and stood up from his chair next to his mom.  As he walked away, she followed.  As he went around the corner to another room.  Donna touched the back of his arm. Jensen halted.  He started crying, clearing his throat.
“It’s okay to be upset.”  Donna whispered.
“She didn’t deserve it, Mom.” He turned to face her.
“And you have to clean up his mess, I know.  But she is worth it, Jensen Ross.”
“She is SO worth it.”
Donna reached up and wiped his few tears away.
“I know,” she smiled.  “Wipe those tears, she needs you,” Donna nodded toward the teenager running toward him.
“Jensen!  Guess what?”  She maintained eye contact while asking Donna for a hug with open arms.  The grandma-figure accepted and kissed her on the cheek.
“What, sweetheart?”  He beamed. She was genuinely excited about something.
“Gen asked me if I could spend the night tonight.  Can I? Please? I’ll be good, I promise,” she rambled.
“Woah, there!”  He let out a hearty laugh.
“Sorry,” she replied, giggling.
“Let’s talk to Dee, but I don’t see a problem with it.”
“Yes! Okay, come on!”  YN reached for his hand after stepping away from Donna. “Danneel!”  The young girl yelled for her foster mom over the party noise. The woman turned away from a conversation with friends.
“What’s up, YN?  Wow, you look really excited.” Danneel noted the way YN dragged Jensen with her. She narrowed her eyes at her husband, wordlessly asking him what was going on.
“I know it’s your birthday weekend, and I am sorry, but-” YN started rambling again.  She took a breath after Jensen modeled one for her. “But, Gen asked if I could spend the night with them, and I really want to.  Please?”
“Oh, wow, YN!  Yes!  Of course.”  Danneel reciprocated the teen’s infectious smile.
“Umm, Danneel?”  YN’s expression soured. She whispered, “What do I bring to a sleepover?”  The woman’s eyes went wide.  She told herself not to react to a question every kid should know the answer to.
“I can help with that, come on.”  Danneel showed no waver in her voice even though she was shocked that YN had to ask such a question.
“Bye, Jensen!”  YN waved as she walked up the stairs with Danneel.
The two ladies entered YN’s room.
“So, you need all of your basic stuff.  Let’s start with what happens when you get ready for bed.  Everything that you would use at home, you’ll take to the Padaleckis’.”
“Umm, toothbrush!”  YN ran into the bathroom and returned with it.
“Perfect.  Hold that for a second, we need to get a case for it.  Come here, Jensen has a ton since he travels all the time.”  The ladies opened a hallway closet door.  Grabbing a blue toothbrush case, she escorted YN back to her room.  “Put this in there.  Okay, next!”
“Pajamas!” YN responded excitedly.
As they continued to go down the list, YN filled a borrowed suitcase.  When they finished, YN grabbed a stuffed impala from her bed and ran back down the stairs.
“Gen, I’m ready!”  YN beamed and dragged the suitcase with clumsiness to the mom of three.  As she started to run toward her, YN turned around and ran back to Danneel.  “Thank you for letting me do this!” Danneel kissed the top of her head.
———-
“Time for bed, babies!” Gen snuck into Tom’s room where the three younger ones surrounded YN as she read them a story.
“Mom,” they groaned.
“Nope, it’s already passed your bedtime. Everyone to bed!” She winked at YN.” As the babies settled, YN looked at Gen.
“Good night, Gen. Thanks for tonight.”
“Sweetie, it’s 8:00. You can stay up with us. Let’s go watch TV.” The teen followed her down the stairs.
“Hey, YN!” Jared sat up on the couch.”You ready to stay up all night watching movies?”
“You better not, or you will be grumpy tomorrow.” Gen nudged his head, playing.
“Aww, come on, please?” Jared whined.
“Fine, since you have the next week off.” His wife grinned. “Come get some popcorn, YN! What do you want to watch? You get to choose.”
After a beat, YN answered.
“Umm… Transformers?”
“You like those?” Jared asked, surprised.
“Yes…?”
“Perfect!” Jared beamed.
————
The next morning, YN woke to a knock on the guest room door. She rolled out of bed.
“Yeah?”
“Breakfast!” Gen yelled. She slowly opened the door as YN gathered her clothes and headed toward the restroom. “Hey,” she stopped the girl. “No changing yet. Part of the sleepover experience. Stay in your PJs as long as you can.” Gen smiled.  “The kids want to wish you a good morning, come on.”
The teenager dropped her clothes with a grin and exited the guest room. She marveled at how relaxed everyone was.  Taking it all in, she quietly scanned the interactions between the siblings and parents.
“YN?” Jared cocked his head to the side.  “You okay?”
“Sleepovers are fun,” YN answered.  “Can we do this again?” She watched for Jared and Gen’s reaction.
“Please, Mommy?” Thomas asked. The adults gave sneaky grins.
“I’m not sure.  You all caused a lot of trouble last night not going to bed when I asked…” The mom tried not to break into a laugh.  YN caught on and stayed silent while the younger ones protested.  After they calmed down, the matriarch answered, “I think that would be a great idea.”
“Really?” YN beamed.  She almost ran Gen over with a hug.
“Of course.”
_______
“Did you sleep at all last night?”  Danneel watched as YN walked through the door of their house with bed head and her clothes in her arms while still wearing her PJs.
“No.  We ended up on the couch until three in the morning and then Jared kicked me out, told me to go to bed.”  Danneel opened her arms to the girl.  After a kiss on the cheek, the younger one was dismissed to get ready for the day. “Can I at least take a nap today though?”  She asked Danneel when she came back down the stairs.
“Jensen wanted us to go out as a family today,” Danneel answered.
“Oh,” YN grimaced. “Have fun.”
“You’re part of the family, YN.  You aren’t staying here is what I’m trying to say.  Go get your stuff, we’re leaving soon. Maybe we’ll be back in time for you to rest. The babies will need a nap anyway.”
———
While on their outing, YN watched in amazement as Jensen showed her his favorite spots in Austin. They went to a restaurant and sightseeing within the Austin limits. The family took pictures at an amazing photo spot well-known in the area. A few people wanted to take photos with Jensen and Danneel, so she stayed to the side. All of a sudden, YN screamed and ran toward the car, getting in, and locking it.
“What was that?” Danneel passed Arrow to Jensen and chased after her with keys in her hand. When she opened the SUV door, Danneel saw YN hiding on the floorboard below the windows. “What’s wrong?”
“I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to flip out like that,” she apologized through tears.”A guy passed us and he looked just like him!”
“Him who?” Danneel confusedly climbed in next to her.
“Terry, my foster dad!” YN cried into the cuffs of her sweatshirt. “It wasn’t him, at least I don’t think so.” After a few minutes of calming down, YN returned to the family gathered off to the side.  As they walked around, more people asked for photos with the mom and dad, so YN waited with Arrow in her arms, Zeppelin in the stroller, and JJ holding her hand.
“Hello, sweetheart.  Remember me?” A voice growled into YN’s ear.

Back home, YN ran towards the stairs.
“How was-,” Danneel was cut off by YN racing past her and Jensen groaning. Snaking her arm out and around the teen’s waist, Dee pulled YN back to her side to talk things through, “Whoa, whoa. Hey! What’s going on?”
Jensen answered for her, interrupting before YN could get a word out, “She decided to do her own thing today. Every time I told her to hurry or move along, she just moved slower. She barely spoke and when she did she was quiet and curt, at best, sometimes downright rude.”
“Babe-,” Danneel started, wanting him to give YN a chance to speak her side.
“We took her in to give her a better chance at life and she just- sometimes I cannot understand why she-“
“Right, because it’s all about you!  This whole day was all about YOU. Jensen. Ross. Ackles.” YN snapped. “Or should I say, the star of the CW’s Supernatural. Ooooooooh.” She sneered, mocking him for emphasis. “You’re right. I wasn’t myself today. But y’know what? You’re right. I’m nobody, right?! Why would you care enough to ask why? It was all about getting to the brewery tonight and helping the Padalecki Family with this or that. Well, I had a bad day too, and you don’t even know why!” YN tried to hold in a sob, but it was too powerful. She couldn’t speak, so she ran up the stairs to her room. Jensen looked at Danneel who nodded her head towards the stairs, nonverbally telling him to follow YN.
“What, sweetheart? Hey, wait up.” He calmly chased after her with an even voice.
“What do you care? I’m just a foster kid. It’s not like I’m your kid. You don’t have to care, obviously. Give me back to the caseworker.  I almost due to get moved again anyway.”  YN plopped on her bed.
Jensen slowly entered her room behind her. “Considering you didn’t slam the door in my face, I’ll take that as permission to ask what’s up with you.”
“What does it matter? I never get a choice in anything. You went all day without asking, Jensen. Why would you act like you care now all of a sudden?”
“You’re right, and I’m sorry.”  He stood at the end of her bed. YN took a deep breath.
“The caseworker called. My grandma died last night before you got home from Vancouver.”
He stopped with a slow nod as he absorbed the information she threw in his face.
“What? The one that we took you to visit with the other week?” He tried to approach her, but she tensed up and scooted back on the bed. Jensen stopped.
“Yep, that one. The one that knew me inside and out. Can you just please leave?” YN was done with Jensen caring.
“No. Let’s talk about this. I’m so sorry. Why didn’t you say anything?”
“You kept ordering me around. I could barely get in a word before you were barking something else.” She played with her fingers.
“Can I do anything? Please?”
“You can leave. I won’t bother you any more than I already have. Thanks for taking me shopping today, but I want to be by myself right now.”
“I can understand that. I’m so sor-.”
“Please, just go away.” YN said  abruptly but without attitude, keeping her eyes on her lap.
“We’ll check on you in a little bit.” He slumped his shoulders and exited.
———
“Hey, YN.” Danneel knocked and opened her door.
“Jensen not ballsy enough to come back in here?” YN sassed..
“Knock it off,” Danneel sternly warned. “I’m sorry for your loss.  I know she meant a lot to you and we didn’t make it any easier.  What can we do to help you work through this?”
————-
Over the next few weeks, YN kept to herself.
“Hey, YN!” Jared stepped outside to greet her as she lay out on a  pool chair.
“No...,” YN groaned.
“Huh?”
“No. No pep talks. Please… I’m fine, everything is fine.”
“Okay, well I'm glad, but I wanted to tell you that the kids want you to come inside to play with them. Since you’re near the pool, I told them to stay inside so they don’t go near the water without floaties.”
“Oh,” YN sighed.
“What’s up, buttercup?”
“Jared. Come on… I don’t want to do this.” She whined.
“Stop. I know something is wrong. Talk to me.  I’m not Jensen or Danneel, I won’t go and tattle on you or gossip. Come on. Just talk to me.” He sat in the chair next to her and stretched out.
“Ugh. You’re incessant! You’ll follow me around all day today if I don’t talk to you. Won’t you?”
“Yep.”
“I’m just sad.  My grandma was amazing, and now she’s gone. I love Jay and Dee, but Gram knew me my whole life.”
“You’re really young to have to work through this, so don’t discredit that.” He turned and smiled. “It’s okay not to be okay. Remember that. There seems to be this idea that everyone needs to be cheery and grateful all the time. Those things are good, but it’s okay if you’re not. At least for a little while. Don’t sit in that for too long though.”
“I don’t have to be happy?” YN raised a brow.
“Nope. But you can’t lash out either. You can feel however you want, but you have to be aware that other people may not know or feel what you are feeling.  Make sense?”
“Yeah,” YN agreed
————-
She kept to herself not wanting to be with the family much. The Ackles’ didn’t know this, but she had been having nightmares most nights, hence why she was alone a lot: she was napping. One night Danneel heard a high-pitched scream and ran into YN’s room to find her gasping for breath.
“Babe, breathe. In and out.” Danneel had her sit up on her bed so that the foster mom could rub her back.
“I’m okay, Dee. Promise. Happens a lot.”
“You didn’t say anything about it. Does Jensen know?”
“No. He has been busy and upset with me, and you have the babies.  I’m fine.”
Dammit Jensen! She needs us.
“That doesn’t mean we don’t have time for you, sweetheart. I’m so sorry you felt that you had to keep this to yourself. How about I hang out in here for a bit? Hopefully you can fall back asleep soon.”
“Umm, I’m not really used to someone helping me like that,” YN looked away.
“Oh, it’s okay, I don’t have to.”  Danneel sadly rubbed YN’s arm.
“It’s okay. Might be nice. I’d like to try.”
“Really?  Okay, scoot over while I turn off the lights.” Danneel walked over to the light switch, flipped it, and walked back to her foster daughter. When she settled next to YN, she started scratching her back. “Feel good?”
“Yeah. Thanks, Dee.”
The older female kissed the top of her head. YN’s body tightened, but eventually her breathing evened out as she relaxed back into sleep.
—————-
“Why have you been so pissed at YN?  Every time you see her all you do is order her around or ignore her.” Danneel raised a brow at her husband via FaceTime.
“I- what?”
“Check your damn attitude at the door, Jensen.  She has been having nightmares, and she didn’t tell us because she felt bad for intruding on our lives.  I assured her that she is one of ours and she is just as important as the little ones. Come on, Jen. I need your help with this. We need to be a team here.”
“I- I didn’t realize that I did that. She’s just been off lately so I guess I was reacting. I’ll talk to her when I get home.”
“Good idea. She needs you.”
“Yeah, sure.” He rolled his eyes.
“Stop it. Don’t act so flippant. She does. She is a teenager—a child. And YN has been having NIGHTMARES worrying about what we think.”
“Really?”
“Yes! Now get your act in gear, mister.”

“Hey, YN. Sleep well last night?” Jensen leaned against her doorway. She looked up from her textbooks at her desk.
“I’m fine. Welcome home, Jensen.” YN weakly smiled at him over her shoulder, but kept her back to him.
“Talk to me,” he walked into her room.
“About…?”
“Dee mentioned you’d been having nightmares?” He shrugged.
“No.”
“You know, you could talk to Sasquatch if you want to, or we could look into a therapist. You’ve been through a lot lately.”
“‘Cuz you’re too busy, I know.” She slumped back onto her bed.
“No, not at all.  He is just easier to talk to sometimes. You can always talk to me.”
“No, I can’t. You just shout or ignore me. I’m glad you’re home, but I have to study. Can you close my door on the way out?”
“YN-“ Jensen took a deep breath. “Look, I’m trying to fix this. Please let me help. I’m sorry for how I’ve been acting. I know you aren’t used to people apologizing, but this is how it works. I did something wrong, and I am trying to make it right. Granted, it’s still up to you if you forgive me, but let me show you how a real family works, okay? Or at least how this family works.”
“Oh,” she hadn’t thought about the interaction in that way. “Okay, just don’t yell so much.”
“No yelling anymore. If I do, you get to sock me in the arm, deal?”
YN started giggling. “What?”
“This is what families do. We’re silly and emotional and we care about each other. You understand?”
“Yeah, I guess.”
“Remember, it’s up to you to forgive me. I’m sorry that I was so dismissive of you. That wasn’t fair of me. So while you mull that over… Would you like to go outside and shoot some hoops with me?”
“Nah, it’s okay. I still have homework to do.”
“C’mon. I know you’re a basketball player. I saw you come in with a ball the other night. And it was past curfew too.” He raised a brow.
“I’m sorry! I just needed some time-“
“I’m just kidding, kiddo.  It’s fine. You were home, that counts. Come on, show me whatcha got.”
Jensen grabbed a basketball from the garage, and they went outside.
After they were done, they entered the house and fell into the couch.
“If you two are sweaty on my couch…” Danneel warned them.
“We’re not. Sorta.”  Jensen laughed.
They watched television until later in the evening.
Danneel walked by the living room on her way to bed when she saw Jensen and YN asleep on the couch. They were piled on top of each other, limbs all over the couch. She giggled and left them there for the night.
YN woke up leaning on Jensen. She froze.
Oh crap. I’m too close.
She tried to scoot away from him without waking him, unfamiliar and a little uncomfortable with much touching. He stirred.
“Hey, pretty girl. It’s okay. I don’t mind. Stay cuddled.” He offered a sleepy smile. Jensen opened up his body for her to return to her original spot. YN frowned but leaned back down, receiving a kiss on her cheek.
Yes! Good girl.
“Thanks, Jay.”
They fell back asleep until the little ones climbed on top of them.
“Our alarms went off,” Jensen laughed, motioning to the children on their laps.
“Yep.”
“Breakfast, sleepyheads!” Danneel walked into the living room. “Up!  You guys have been on the couch for 12 hours. Let’s get a move on.”
“Drill sergeant much?” Jensen laughed.
————
During the holiday season, the extended family members were invited to the Ackles’ residence. Nervous about so many new people, YN timidly hid behind Danneel and gripped the back of her shirt like a lifeline, peeking around her shoulder to meeting everyone.
“YN?”
YN dropped her grip on Danneel and turned to face the familiar voice. “Mimi? What-“
“You know each other?” Danneel watched as YN was embraced by the older couple.
“She was our neighbor in Dallas,” Alan answered with a smile, sauntering over to join the group. “We heard that Jensen and Danneel’s oldest kiddo was named YN, but we didn’t know it was you!” He beamed. “Miss you, sweetheart.”
“Missed you too, Pop.”
“Mimi...? Missed you…? Pop...?” Danneel hadn’t thought YN had a relationship with anyone before.
“What a happy surprise!” Eyes softening with love and happiness that YN had known at least one loving relationship in her life, Danneel gestured for her foster child to go into the kitchen. “YN, you can put your place at the table near them if you’d like.” She saw a hint of a smile cross the girl's face and couldn’t help but returning a beaming grin.
“Jensen!” Danneel whispered excitedly, waving for her husband to join her.
Jensen turned from his conversation, moving closer.
“Your parents know YN!” Danneel could barely control the excitement in her voice.
“Wait. What? How? They live in Dallas…?”
Neither parent noticed YN return from the kitchen, walking up behind them and surprising them when she answered, “They live near the house I lived in before. That guy was bad, so they moved me.” YN shrugged and started scratching her arm, “Then I came here,” the scratches on her arm turning red, a tight smile belaying her nonchalance.
“Hey, no need for that.” Donna pulled YN’s hand from her opposite arm. “It’s okay. He’s gone now.” Squeezing her hand and reaching over to rub the irritated arm, she whispered, “No scratching.” Resuming a normal volume, Donna asked, “did you go move your place at the table so I can sit next to you?”
“Of course!” YN nodded before squeezing Donna’s hand in return.
……….
YN opened up more in the company of the sweet older couple. Danneel was surprised but absolutely elated to watch the normally withdrawn girl as she talked and laughed with the whole family and hugged both of her in-laws throughout the evening.
“I need to talk to you.” Alan stepped away from the group with Jensen. After they got settled in Jensen’s office, Alan proceeded to tell him about how the two parties became friends. “We knew he was bad news, and YN was such a sweet kid. She was rebellious but good. None of the the others really said much, but she always waved or gave us a smile. We noticed she became withdrawn, so we would invite her over for dinner. She even made nicknames for us, but she-“
“Do you know what happened?” Jensen interjected.
“Shut up, and I’ll tell you,” Alan said, curt with his son. Jensen closed his mouth. “I do know that she did things like scratch her arms and cower if someone became too loud. When she would visit her arms were always red or bloody from the scratching.”
“Dammit.”
“I don’t know what he did to her, and I know she has been here for a while, but I can see it in her face. Just- just do what you’ve been doing. Please. She’s amazing and-“
“Dad, I know,” Jensen grinned. “We have been through a lot together already, but things have worked out fairly well. She is opening up some. Let me know if she tells you anything?”
“Sure, kid.  Let’s go eat some pie.”
————
“Hey, kiddo.” Jensen walked into YN’s room at midnight. She huffed. “Another bad dream?” YN tried to catch her breath.
“Yeah, sorry.”
“Hey, no need to apologize.  You can’t control it. Can I help calm you down?  Would you like me to stay?”
“You let me lean on you earlier.” YN started matter of factly. “I’m not used to…”
“Physical touch?” Jensen sat on the edge of the bed next to her and took her hand.
“Yeah. Can you stay? It makes me feel a little better.”
Her elementary description gave Jensen insight to the fact that she had not had exposure to that kind of love, or any kind of love.
“Of course. Come here.” He moved to lean against the headboard and opened his arm to invite her to snuggle into him, with YN under the covers and him on top. “Let’s hope these nightmares stay away tonight.  Go to sleep, sweetie.”
“Good night, Jensen.” YN gave him a sleepy half-snuggle half-hug before scooting to a more comfortable position. Falling asleep, she smiled to herself. Once she was breathing evenly Jensen untangled himself from her arms and left her sleeping peacefully, heading back to the living room to meet his parents and Danneel.
“She is out like a light.”
“Good, I hope she sleeps through the night,” Danneel sighed.
“That girl has been through so much.  Tomorrow is our last day here. Do you think we could take her for the day?” Donna looked over at them, puppy-eyes pleading the foster parents with a smile.
“I don’t see a problem with that, Mom. I’m sure she would love it.”
“I’m so glad she has you guys.” Danneel took Alan’s hand. “YN deserves some good.”
———
Good morning, YN!” Donna opened her arms for a hug.
“Hi,” she smiled.
“We have an idea. You can say no if you’re not interested.” Alan grinned.
“O- Okay?”
“Would you like to hang out with us today? I know it’s not the coolest to hang out with us old people, but we thought-“ Allen stumbled.
“Sure! YES! Really?” YN ran into Allen’s arms. “Can we?” She looked to her foster parents.
“We already agreed, as long as you’re okay with it,” Jensen offered a small smile.
“Thank you!” She ran into Jensen’s arms, appreciative of the opportunity. “When can we go? And where?!”

“Ah!” YN jumped and turned with the baby in her arms, grabbing JJ and pulling her to the older one’s body. “James?” YN beamed. “Hi! Don't do that!” She shoved him jokingly. Noticing that she recognized someone, Jensen ran over to make sure she was alright. The oldest male walked to James and squared up to him. “Stop, Jay! He’s a friend!”  YN stood in between the two until Jensen’s shoulders relaxed.
The younger male was not intimidated.
“Hi, nice to meet you, sir. I’m James.” He extended his hand to shake Jensen’s. His tall stature and broad shoulders oozed a quiet confidence. He turned back to YN. “Wait- he’s- we used to watch him on TV! You get to be Jensen Ackles’ foster?! Are you kidding?” James laughed in approval.
“Yep!” YN smiled widely. “He is not that cool though,” She nudged Jensen.
“What?” Jensen put a hand on his chest, feigning hurt. “So, who is this?” He composed himself.
“Oh, I was in the system with YN. She’s like my little sister. I aged out, but we were in the same house for a while,” his expression faltered. Jensen noticed YN’s frightened eyes at his mention of her housing history.
“Well then, it’s nice to meet you, James. We’re going to this taco truck for lunch, would you like to join us?”
“Uh, sure. Could I have a picture with you first? I’m sorry if that’s stupid. We just love your show so much. Right, YN?”
“You’re selling me out!” YN giggled.
“I didn’t know you were THAT big of a fan, YN.  Good to know!” Jensen laughed. “Really though, I don’t mind the picture, and you’re more than welcome to join us for lunch, James.”
“I’m only here to take pictures for my photography class, so I don’t need to be anywhere,” he grinned. James handed his camera to YN who did her best to take a photo of them with one hand since Arrow was in her arms.
“Here,” Danneel walked over and took the baby from YN. Danneel walked away from YN while the boys smiled.
“Perfect!” YN squealed.
“I’ve missed you, YN.” James walked back to her to retrieve his camera.
“You too, James.” She gave him a side hug as Arrow said hello from Danneel’s arms.
“Hi, little one.” James waved.
“Come on, I’m hungry,” Jensen motioned for them to follow. James stayed in the back of the group with YN
“Did you see that guy? He looked almost exactly like-“
“Don’t, Jamie.” YN walked faster to catch up to the group.
“I’m just saying it was creepy,” he whispered as they threw walked up behind the family.
After everyone ordered, they sat at a lunch table. YN and James were uptight with the reminders of their previous treatment.
“You guys okay?” Jensen looked over at them, reading their stoic expressions. “Aren’t you glad to see each other?”
“Oh, yes! Just taking it all In, sir. It’s great to see her again.  We went through a lot when-“ he stopped as YN sucked in a breath. “Never mind.” James cleared his throat. “I have been keeping up with the show. Are you on hiatus right now?” He looked to Danneel and Jensen.
“Yeah, it’s nice to be home with my four babies,” Jensen winked at YN. She rolled her eyes with a hint of a smile on her lips.
“I’m not a baby!” JJ piped in.
“You’ll always be his baby,” James assured her with a smile.
“He’s right, you know.” Jensen nodded. “Always and forever.”
————
YN and James walked to his car as they said goodbye. Having swapped phone numbers to stay in contact, the two hugged.
“I love you, James.” YN squeeze him tightly. He returned it with picking her up slightly. She chuckled. As he let go, they heard a click.
“Freeze,” a person behind them demanded. They both did as asked. “Get in the car.” A gun was put to James’ head. “You don’t cooperate, he gets hurt,” she growled at YN.
As YN gasped, she saw who was ordering them around.
“Susan?”
“I knew I saw Terry,” James whispered.
“He ain’t here! Is his wife not good enough for you?” The lady returned, talking about herself. “Get in! It’s my turn with you two.” She released the slide on the gun to show her seriousness.
YN screamed. Danneel and Jensen looked over as the two teens were shoved into James’ car with him in the driver’s seat.
“YN!” Jensen ran toward the situation, but it was a lost cause. They were speeding out of the parking lot. “No!” He screamed.  “Dee! We need to call 911!” He sprinted back his family and took Arrow out of Danneel’s arms and put her in the stroller so that her hands were free.
“911 Emergency, how can I help you?”
“My daughter and her friend just got kidnapped by a crazy lady! Please send help to 32nd and Southern. It’s at Mountain Top Park!”
“Sir, what did the car look like?”
“Brown sedan. Toyota Corolla, maybe? 2015 model… I think.”
“What did the female look like?”
“Umm, gray, curly hair, mid-fifties, maybe 5’9”, but she had a gun. Please hurry!”
“What was she wearing, sir?”
“Pink shirt and gray shorts, I think. Please just said someone!”
——-
Once the police took witness statements, they put out an Amber Alert for YN and took a missing person’s report for James. The police team set out to look for the pair.
“You need to find her!” Jensen yelled at the cop, realizing the official was in ho hurry.
“Sir, whose fault is it that she went missing, huh? You are her guardian assigned by the state! Nice job, Hollywood!” The police officer gritted his teeth.
“Excuse me? This is not my fault! It doesn’t matter what my job is.  Bring her home!  Do you watch your fourteen year-old child all the time?” Jensen growled and stood square with the cop. “Because if you do, he or she will never learn to do things on their own!”
“You’re under arrest for interfering with an investigation, Mr. Ackles!” The investigator turned Jensen to face away from him. As the officer was cuffing him, Jensen’s phone rang. It vibrated on the hood of the cop car, so Jensen alerted him of who was calling.
“It’s YN!” He ripped his wrists out of the officer’s grip and picked up the phone. As the officer realized what happened, he tried to restrain him again. “YN, tell me you’re okay.”
“Jensen,” YN whispered. “I’m scared.”
“Okay, we’ll find you. Can you turn your location on? Is James with you?” Jensen tried to stay quiet. The officer froze when he understood what was happening. Jensen motioned for a pen and paper. He wrote down YN’s cell phone number and for the police team to track it.
“Yes, I can. He is here. He got hurt trying to protect me though. I’m in the trunk with him- no!”
Jensen heard scrambling and screaming on YN’s end of the phone call.
“YN!” He yelled.  The call ended. “DAMMIT!  Stop worrying about me and get my girl back!  Now!” Jensen stormed away from the cop toward his family.  Danneel looked up.  He didn’t tell her much, he wanted to spare her the details. His wife’s shoulders were tense from keeping the other kids calm.  “We’ll get her back.”
______
“You little devil child!”  Susan screamed at YN.  “You thought you could reach out to your new daddy without me knowing?  I could hear you from the DRIVER’S SEAT!”
“He needs a hospital!  He won’t wake up!”  YN climbed out of the trunk while James was unconscious, limp in the small compartment.
“He’s fine. James can’t defend you now, you brat.  Come here!”  The lady pulled her gun off of her holster.  YN stopped in place, scared.  “Move!” The next thing she saw was dark walls all around her.  Her breathing quickened.  As she took in her surroundings, she heard a door from above open.  Scampering backward, she pinned herself against a wall, afraid of whoever was coming down the stairs.  A body tumbled down and hit the landing, the door slammed shut.
“James!”  YN shrieked.  “I got you.  Wake up, Jamie!” YN crawled to him, realizing her broken ankle was no use.  “Hey, Jamie!”  She shook him multiple times in quick succession.
“Ugh,” he moaned.  “YN? What happ-”
“Shh.  You’re okay.  Sit up,” she pulled him forward.  “Breathe.”
“Are you okay?” James took her into his arms.
“Yeah.  I think my ankle is busted, but I’ll be fine.  How’s your head?”
“Headache.  So bad,” he whispered.
“Okay, let me see you.” James backed away from her.  She tilted his head toward the light streaming through a small window.  “Looks like a concussion.”
“Great,” he rolled his eyes.
“No, it’s okay.  Close your eyes.  You’ll feel better.” YN smiled.  “Lay down,” she guided him to rest at her side.  They both heard rustling at the door of the basement.  Susan stomped down the steps.
“Here!  Be grateful!” The older women threw a couch bed mattress toward the two people lying on the floor.  It landed on top of them.  The corner stitching caught YN on the face.
“Ow!”  YN pushed the mattress off of herself.  She reached for her cheek which was now bleeding.
“That’s what you get for being a skank!”
“Why do you hate me?  Huh?”  YN screamed at the woman.
“Good night!”  Susan took the stairs two at a time before shaking the basement with the closing of the door.
James flattened out the bare mattress onto the floor.  “Come on, lay down,” he maneuvered YN’s body trying to not hurt her ankle.  She scooted onto the uncomfortable surface with his help.  James closed his eyes, fighting to keep them open.
“Rest.  Come lay with me.”
“No, I’m fine.  You take it.  I’ll stand watch-” he curled over, falling asleep.  YN tried her best to pull and push him onto the mattress while he slept.  She lied next to him, fighting her own tired body.
———-
Jensen walked away from Danneel. He put his head in his hands.
“Jay,” his wife whispered, coming up behind him.
“Go be with the babies.” He couldn’t look at her.
“My parents took the kids. Come on,” she pulled him into her. “It’s not our fault. Don’t let that cop get to you.”
“He’s right.”
“Bullshit. We saw what happened.   It’s not our fault. Get that out of your head, and let’s get her home.”
“What happened?”
“Sarah?” Danneel looked over at the woman running toward them.
“Law enforcement alerted me since YN is a ward of the state.” She stopped in front of the couple.
They explained the situation as best as they could recount for Sarah. She tried to hide her emotions, but the caseworker stepped away for a moment to collect herself. As she joined them again, a police officer approached the parents.
“We found her cell phone.  On the east side of town.”
“Please tell me It’s not on the way to Second Street and San Jac. Sarah asked, tense.
“A few miles from there, why?”  The officer confusedly raised a brow at her.
“Terry and Susan,” Sarah surmised.  “That’s right by their house.”
“No.  You can’t be serious!” Jensen took his baseball cap off and threw it to the ground. “The guy that hurt her?  Kill his ass!” He kicked his hat, sending dirt everywhere. When he looked up, he saw Danneel’s eyes tearing up.  His body relaxed and pulled her into his body.  “We’ll figure it out.”
“Can you give us the address?  We can go check it out,” the investigator asked Sarah.
“Yes,” she took a relieved breath.  “Let me call the office and get it for you.”  The caseworker stepped away and pulled out her phone.  When she got off of the call, Sarah handed a slip of paper to the police officer.  He ran toward his team to investigate the address.  “Those assholes.  I tried to get her out of there, but there was nowhere, I mean NOWHERE for her to go.” Sarah ran a hand over her face.  “I- I did everything I could.  I even tried to get her placed with me, but-” she took a deep breath.
“Not your fault,” Jensen weakly smiled.  “I am going too.”
“No, Mr. Ackles!” Sarah yelled as he started to walk away.  “That man- he will- just don’t.  Please.”
“I need her to be okay, Sarah,” Danneel chimed in.
Jensen continued toward his car.
“Sir! You need to stay here!”  One of the officers caught the conversation.  “Stop, or I will detain you!”  The man in his black uniform saw Jensen still ignoring him.  Two officers chased after the foster dad.  As Jensen stormed toward the driver’s side of the vehicle, they pushed him against it, his chest hit the window.  The officers pinned him against the door. “I told you to stop!”  The original officer used his forearm to make sure Jensen was pinned..  Before he knew what happened, he was in cuffs.
“I need to get her back!” He moved his shoulders to push the officers off.
“Sit down, or I will put you in my car,” the investigator growled.  Jensen gritted his teeth and groaned out of frustration, but he followed orders.  He plopped onto the dirt parking lot, leaning against the vehicle tire.
“Jay!” Danneel ran over. “What are you doing?” Sarah watched from afar. “I am about to have a mental breakdown, and you get arrested?  Really?”  Danneel crossed her arms. “Sir, please don’t!”  She faced the higher ranking officer. “We just need to get YN back.” She looked back to Jensen.  Silent, he hung his head.
“He can stay there until he follows directions,” the investigator answered and walked off.
“Ya know, a lot of the time I feel like an effing single mom, but I have never felt like that more than right now.  We may lose her, and you throw a fit like a child?” Danneel sat down next to him while he still had his hands behind his back.
“I’m sorry,” he hung his head again.
“I know,” she sighed.  She ran her hands through his hair and kissed his temple.  “It’s their job to go get her.  You’re an amazing dad, but you would go in there guns’ blazing, and that won’t work,” Danneel said evenly.
“You ready to not run around like a lunatic?” The officer approached the couple after leaving a group conversation. Jensen looked up at him, the sun in his face.
“Yeah,” he solemnly answered.
“Get your feet under you. I’m gonna pull you off the ground.” The man in cuffs did as asked. The cold, metal restraints were taken off of Jensen’s wrists.
“Look, I’m sorry-“ Jensen started.
“I get it, Mr. Ackles. I was out of line. If I was in your shoes, I would have done the same thing.” The officer reached out to shake his hand. “Don’t rub your wrists too much.”
“Have you heard anything from your team?” Danneel spoke up.
“There was a Corolla in the driveway of the house. That’s all I know right now, ma’am.”
————
“Wake up, sleepyheads!” Susan stomped down the basement stairs. The two kidnapped victims turned to face her. YN sat up.
“Why are we here? Where is Terry?”
“Shut up, YN!” James whispered.
“Lets just day that I was a bit jealous of you and him. He liked you. Terry is with the boys for the weekend. It’s my turn with you. James is just collateral damage. Breakfast!” The older woman threw a few strips on bacon on the dirty cement floor. Without another word, she exited the room.
James scooped the food off of the floor, blew the germs away, and handed them all to YN. Knowing he was trying to sacrifice for her, she took half out of his hand and gestures for him to have the rest.
“I thought he was at the park! So how are we getting out of here?” For the first time, they could see more of the room. With it being morning, sunlight rays lit the underground space.
“I know there is a deadbolt on the basement door. And there isn’t anything to help us with that down here.” James sighed. “Umm. Oh! Come here!” He grew excited. “No, wait! I forgot about your ankle. Let me just check something.” The older teen walked over to the small window that came down from the ceiling. It was in the shape of a tiny square, so he jumped up to see through it. “We may be able to get through. I see a latch, but it’s hard to reach. I’m tall, but i ain’t that tall,” James sighed.
“Come pick me up. I can reach it if you give me a piggyback ride” She opened and closed her hands, motioning for him to pick her up off the mattress.
“I don’t want to hurt you,” James’ protective nature showed through.
“You wanna get out of here or no?” YN snapped. “He could come back and find us here! We got this, now pick me up!” She extended her arms again.
“Fine, YN. I’m going to pull you up on your strong foot, and then I’ll put you on my back. Ready?” He crosses the room toward her.
“Yep.” She made sure her strong foot was flat against the concrete. Having lost her shoes in one of the scuffles with Susan, she took her time trying to even put her weight on her bare foot. Keeping her right ankle off the ground, she accepted James’ help to stand up. He made sure she was balanced before he faced away from her to lift her onto his back. “Wait, that’s not high enough. I need to be on your shoulders.”
“It’s too dangerous!” James pressed. “Don’t try to play superhero. You’re already hurt.”
“A broken body is much better than you telling everyone I’m dead! Besides, if I died, Jensen and Danneel would kill me,” she smirked.
“Don’t talk like that,” James groaned. “Fine.” He put her down to regain his balance. Hold onto the side of the steps. I’m going to step under you and lift you up.” He crouched down between her legs and balanced her rear in the back of his neck and shoulders. “1, 2, 3,” He said as he stood up, groaning. As he did, YN’s ankle hit the side of a step.
“Argh,” she bit her hand to hide her cry. Her eyes glistened from tears rolling down her face.
“Sorry, kiddo,” James whispered. “Let’s get out of here.” He walked both of them over to the wall with the small window at the top. YN reached, but couldn’t quite touch the latch. “Let me get closer.” She used her thoughts on his shoulders to reach a longer distance. As her hand touched the latch, they heard a noise.
“What are you-“ Susan swung the door open.  Upon realizing what the teenagers were trying to do, she threw a bowl of ingredients for her lunch at them, but she fell down the stairs with a scream. The bowl  hit YN in the chest and shattered, but James stabilized her. He didn’t even notice the shards of glass embedded in his own body. YN cried out.
“James Kellam? YN LN?” Over her screams, the two teens heard a man’s voice.
With YN still on his shoulders, he replied, “Yes,” to a tall, distinguishable man in a black uniform.
“Call a bus!” The officer screamed. “I’m going to cuff her, and then you guys can go upstairs, okay?” He looked at James and YN. “I can’t move her, because she has been shot.”
YN stayed quiet. Watching this unfold, she cowered. She was lost in all of the commotion of officers and EMTs everywhere.
“Yes, sir.” James slowly put YN back on the ground. He tried to ignore the yelling and chaos around them. Their captor was being subdued but not moved because of her bullet wound. The oldest teen wrapped his arm under both of YN’s arms, along the length of her waist, noting her now-ripped shirt and lack of concentration. He saw the fright in her eyes, mouth open in shock.  “I got you. Look at me,” James’ eyes pulled hers from the scene in front of them. “I’m going to carry you out. Close your eyes. It’s scary, but don't look. I’ll keep you safe,” He soothed. “Jump on my back again.”
YN did as asked. Making sure he could see her eyelids shut, James was cleared by the officer to take YN upstairs. As they exited the house, gurneys met the two of them at the front entrance. Firefighters assisted James in laying YN’s broken body onto the moving contraption. “She got hot with the axe and her ankle is broken.”
As she was taken away, she thought she saw the silhouette of the man she hated the most.
“He-!”
“Sweetie, it’s okay. We’ll take care of you,” a sweet officer spoke to her. “No, I-“ her speech slurred. As she entered the ambulance, an emergency specialist told her that he was administering some medication. YN soon fell asleep.
“You’re coming too, son,” an EMT said calmly. In his role as defender, James forgot that he had suffered a concussion. The sunlight made him look away quickly. “I can tell you have a concussion, maybe some internal bleeding from the looks of your stomach.”
James looked down. His shirt was torn, and he could see that his midsection had swelled.
“You were knocked out and have been running on adrenaline. We need to make sure you are okay.”
With all of the instructions and flurry of activity, James was tired. He couldn’t think for himself anymore, so he followed the directions of the EMT.
“We’ll get you and your friend  taken care of, Mr. Kellam.”

YN’s psychologist pulled Danneel and Jensen into the room when it was time for YN to be picked up.
“As we all know, she has been through a lot. I wanted to implement something, but I need your help to do it,” the doctor said.
“Anything,” Danneel affirmed him.
“I’m giving her this notebook. This is for her eyes only. I’ve asked her to put it in a place where the little ones can’t find it.” He handed YN the blue spiraled material. “You can decorate it, make it yours and write whatever is on your mind that you want to talk to me about next time,” the doc encouraged YN. “Next, I want her to have two hours a week of YN Time. I would like her to have some self-care designated just for her. Maybe you allow her to treat herself to spa time at home, let her go to a park, drop her off at the mall, but it has to be by herself. No interruptions from you or the little ones. You guys can talk about what that looks like for you later. And whatever it is can change from week to week. If she requests it, please grant it unless there is something pressing.”
“That sounds awesome! Can I get some prescribed alone time too?” Jensen responded sarcastically.
“Jensen!” Danneel gasped.
The doctor stood tall and addressed the foster dad.
“Sir, you are not my patient. YN is. Are you willing to support her in doing this in a positive manner?”
Jensen shut his mouth as soon as his words left his lips. He took a beat and answered.
“Yes, of course. I’m sorry, YN. You deserve those two hours.”
YN cowered behind the doctor not trusting Jensen with this new homework she was given.
“I think it will greatly lower her stress. You all have been put in an interesting but strenuous situations, and I want her to get back to her being YN without anyone around so that she can find out who she is again.”
“I think that’s a great idea,” Jensen nodded.
“Great. Thank you for your support. I’ll see you next week, YN.”
———
The next week flew by. YN said goodbye to Jensen for one last week on Supernatural before he would be home until July. She used her notebook often whenever she questioned her decisions or was confused about a situation and she reveled in her alone time. It was quiet, and she could actually think for herself.
——-
“Jensen, please stop asking me,” YN stood firm. “I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Why are you hiding this information?”
“I’m not hiding anything! I’m just not ready to tell you yet. I’m going to talk to the doc about it.” She huffed. Proud of herself for her increase in positive communication, her lips hinted a grin.
“What is so damn funny?” Jensen growled at her through the phone screen. She snapped out of her thoughts.
“Nothing. Daydreaming.”
“Fine, then,” he groaned.
“I don’t have to tell you everything, Jensen. Just because you can tell something is bothering me doesn’t mean I have to actually tell you what it is!” YN rolled her eyes.
“Hey! Don’t be rude!”
“Just stop!”
“Both of you, cool it! Gah, you guys are so similar. YN needs to go finish something, and YOU,” she pointed to her husband, “should catch up with your other kids now.” The foster mom walked in on the conversation to retrieve her phone from YN. Danneel eyed him, silently telling him to leave it alone.
“I love you, YN.”
“Bye, Jensen.” YN sadly handed the phone back to Danneel.
“Get back to it, YN. It’s okay,” she soothed.
As Danneel left, YN picked up her pen and continued to write in her notebook for her psychologist.
———
YN NOTEBOOK ENTRY
It’s hard being back, even though we were only taken for a few hours.  I see those two freaks everywhere I go
Am I a bad kid?
I am trying so hard, but i can’t do anything right.
I stood up for myself and he still thinks I’m stupid.
———
“Are all the munchkins in bed?” Jensen walked through the door at 11pm on a Friday night.
“Yeah,” Danneel whispered. “Long first week on summer,” she smiled tiredly. “Come on, shower and then bed. I need my man to actually share our bed with tonight,” Danneel grinned, thankful to have him home.
“Ooo, are you thinking what I’m thinking?” The husband wiggled his eyebrows.
“That sleep sounds amazing and any adult fun can wait? Yep!” She dragged him and his belongings up the stairs.
“You’re no fun,” he mocked her.
“Babe, I’m SO tired. Please, not tonight,” she whispered as they entered their bedroom.
“Totally fine, my love. Just teasing,” he turned her around and kissed her forehead. “Be back in five.” Jensen ran off to shower before returning in only pajama pants. “Hey, are you ready for bed-,” he stopped. Jensen saw his foster daughter wailing in Danneel’s arms on their bed. He raised a brow, silently asking what had happened.
“She’s had a rough week. Be nice,” Danneel mouthed to him. He came into her line of sight before she sat up.
“Hi, Jensen,” YN stated.
“Hi, sweetheart,” he smiled. “Bad week?”
“Just bad dreams. I’m okay. They just feel so real all over again.”
“I’m so sorry. Is there anything we can do to help?” He sat down next to his girls on the large mattress.
“Dee and I have been falling asleep to the TV… but you’re home now, so-“
“So we can all do it. Come on, get in the middle.” He launched himself onto his side of the bed making YN laugh. She scooted to a comfortable position next to him with Danneel on the other side.
“I forgot Baby,” YN frowned. “Oh well.”
“Who is Baby?” Jensen confusedly tilted his head.
“My impala stuffie you gave me. It’s okay. You guys will suffice,” she giggled.
“Okay! Trash TV or HGTV?” Danneel grabbed the remote and turned on the flatscreen.
“Something calm, please?” YN asked.
“Umm, how about Good Bones?”
“I like the two ladies on that show. They’re funny,” YN smirked.
“Perfect.  Everybody get comfy.”
Before they could blink, YN fell asleep against Danneel. The foster mom smiled.
“She’s more relaxed since you’re home,” she whispered.
“Nah, she just had a long week.”
“She asks for you, ya know.” Danneel eyed him.
“She does?”
“Yeah. Says it in passing mostly, but she feels safer with you around.” Jensen became quiet at her statement.  “What’s wrong, Jay?”
“Nothing, just surprised,” he shrugged.  “I’ve never worked so hard to earn someone’s comfortability,” Jensen beamed.
Since YN crashed on their bed, the couple moved to the living room.  Eventually they fell asleep leaning against each other.  The next morning, Danneel’s phone rang.  Seeing that Sarah’s name was displayed across the screen, she answered it quickly.
“Sarah?” Danneel ran a hand over her face.
“Hi, Mrs. Ackles.  I’m sorry to bother you so early, but I have some news.”
“It’s fine, Sarah.  What happened?” She stood and exited to a spare bedroom on the first floor of their home.
“I am required by law to let YN know that her father is now out of prison.” Sarah sucked in a breath.
“I thought he was going to be there for a lot longer.  So what does that mean for us?”
“He has no rights to her, but he could potentially reach out to her.  We aren’t there yet, and we may never be.  I’m not sure.”
“But she doesn’t even know him.  Her file said he left her when she was three.” Danneel tried to sort out the situation.
“I know, but-”
“What?”  YN stopped in the doorway of the bedroom.
“Hey, sweetie.  Come here,” she motioned for YN to accept a side hug.  “Sarah, I have to go.  I can get more information later.”  With that, the foster mom hung up.  “YN, Sarah called because your dad is being let out of prison.  She is obligated to let you know.”
“You mean Alex?” YN crash-landed onto the guest bed.
“Yeah.”
“Why does she have to tell me?”  YN confusedly looked up at Danneel.
“I guess it’s the law.”
“I haven’t seen him since I was three.”
YN- 3 years old
“Daddy?”  YN questioned.
“Baby, I’ll come back for you!” Her dad was dragged out of the apartment by officers in cuffs.
Before she knew what happened, a young woman walked to her and said, “Hi YN.  My name is Sarah…”
Pulling herself back to reality, she shivered.
“He got pulled out with bracelets on.  I barely remember it.  He gave up his rights to me, and I was put into the system.  I met Sarah that day. She was the only person that cared since that day.”
“I’m so sad that you can’t be with either of your parents.” Danneel rubbed her arm.
“Mom died at birth, she won’t be looking for me,” YN put her head in her hands. “I’m not even supposed to be here.  They had a one-night stand.  She got pregnant on their first date.
“You’ve been alone for eleven years,” Danneel realized.
“I had Sarah, but yeah.  Do you think he’ll try to talk to me?  He went to jail.  I mean, he scares me.”
“We’ll take it one step at a time.”
YN JOURNAL ENTRY
I heard he was bad.  He hasn’t been there.  What happens if he wants to know me?
“Hey, kiddo.”  Jensen knocked on her door frame.  She screamed.  “Oh, YN.  I’m sorry.”
After a deep breath, she said, “It’s okay.”
“Heard you had an interesting morning.”
“Yeah.”
“You’re so strong.” She was surprised by his statement.  “You’ve been through a lot.  No matter what, we’ll be here. Promise.” Not thinking much of it, he went to leave the room when she ran into his arms.  He took a step back when he absorbed her running into his chest.  “What’s wrong?” His shirt slowly grew a wet spot.  Jensen became quiet when she started shaking, not comprehending what he was asking her.  “I know.  It’s a lot.  You’re so strong,” he whispered to her, but it was more for himself to hear it.  As she calmed, YN took a step back.
“I don’t know.  I just don’t know what to think, I guess.”
“I can understand that.  It must be so difficult to think about your dad.”
“What if he wants to see me?”
“Sweetie, we don’t know if he will.”
“He hurt people.  That’s why he is in jail.”
“That must be really scary,” Jensen affirmed her.
“Yeah, I think I will talk to the doc about it.”
“I support that. I think that’s a great idea,” Jensen smiled.
______
“Hey, YN.  We’re going on our date.  You gonna be okay here by yourself? We’ll bring the little ones home from Grandma and Grandpa’s house.”
“I’ll be fine.  Promise.”
“Okay.  If anything happens-”
“Call or text, I know.  Thanks, Dee.”
“You can stay up late, but don’t go crazy, okay?”
“Can I rent some movies on the TV?”
“Two tops, and then bed, got it?”
“Yes!” YN enthusiastically pumped her fist in the air.  “Got it.  Have fun.”
______
While Jensen and Danneel were gone, YN watched a movie and ate some popcorn.  Since it was getting into summer weather, she opened the front windows and back doors that led out to screened-in porch. Half way through her second movie, she heard something outside.  She stopped the movie, grabbed her phone, and slowly walked to the peephole in the front door.  YN saw something on the porch that hadn’t been there hours earlier.  In a panic, she called Jared who she knew was home.
“Please pick up,” she whispered.
“Hey, YN.  It’s late-”
“Somebody was here, and I’m home alone,” she softly interrupted him.
“Okay, be right there. Turn on the outside lights, hide in your bathroom.  I’ll come get you.”
“Okay, stay on the phone though.  I’m scared.”
Before she knew it, Jared announced himself, and he opened the door.
“It’s clear.  I didn’t see anybody,” he barely stated before she ran into his arms.  “It’s okay.  I locked everything and shut all the doors.” He stroked her hair.
“Thank you, Jared,” she spoke into his jacket.
“Of course.  Gen did call the cops though.  They should be here soon.”
“Okay.  Do you think Dee and Jay will be mad?” YN looked up at him.
“No.  I think they will be proud that you kept your wits about you and did the right thing.  Oh, I hear the sirens.  Go call them while I talk to the cops, okay? Can you do that?”
“Yeah.” She stayed in her room while Jared went back downstairs to greet the police officers. “Dee? Somebody was here. I don’t know who, but they left something so I called Jared-“
“Are you safe?” Danneel interrupted YN.
“Jared and the cops are here now. I was so scared.”
“Okay, we’ll be right there.” She hung up.
As YN walked downstairs, Jared motioned for her to come join him.
“This is YN,” Jared introduced her to the officer.
“Miss, are you aware that this note that was on the porch was for you?” He showed her the front of a letter with her name on it.
“Uh. What?”
“It’s signed an Alex LN. Do you know who that is?”
She gasped and held onto Jared.
“That’s my father.”

“Hi, YN.  Lame James, how you doing, son?”  James stirred from his restless slumber in the hospital.  YN sat straight up in her bed.
“Terry?  How did you get in here?”  YN wiped her eyes, scared and tired.
“Get out of here, Terry.”  James growled and stood in front of YN’s bed as a protective measure.
“Boy, you have been hurt so bad, you can’t protect her.”
“I ain’t your son or your boy.  Now leave!”
“See,” he stepped into the room, “Susan and I hated each other when we first met.  Eventually we tolerated each other, but my wife is taken care of and out of the way, so I can have YN to myself.  Move.” As he approached YN, she was silent in shock.  James pulled the emergency cord to alert hospital staff. “You shouldn’t have done that, son.” He threw a vase of flowers at James, glass breaking and spraying everyone.  The older teenager was able to keep on his feet when he saw Terry lunge for YN.  Fists flew until James sat on top of him, the older man’s face buried in glass on the ground. Before they could do anything, James was being pulled off of Terry, and security escorted the attacker out of the room.
“James, you’re cut!” YN saw blood trickling down his body. She started to stand, but he startled her by yelling for her to sit back down.
“Keep your feet on the bed until they clean this up.”
“I can’t- I can’t believe he-,” she sputtered.
“I know.  Who knows how he found us, but we’re okay.”  Wearing his hospital slippers, he walked slowly on the glass toward YN’s bed.  He held her hands and kissed her forehead.
“Sir, back up so that I can check your wounds,” a nurse stated. “We’ll have the room swept and vacuumed so that you two won’t be hurt.”
“We already were by the worst man in the world!  Gah!” YN slammed her fist into the bed.  “You people need better security!”
As the room was cleaned, medical staff assessed their newest injuries.  Once the glass was removed, James settled back into his bed which dawned new sheets.
“Thank you,” YN said calmly.
“For what?”  James asked.
“Saving me.”
“You’re the one who fights.  I protect you because you’re my little sister.”
Before she could respond to his sweet comment, Jensen and Danneel walked through the door.
“Sweetie!”  Danneel ran over to YN’s bed.
“Ow!” YN squealed in pain as the mother tried to hug her.
“Sorry!  Are you guys okay?”
“Yeah, but guess who showed up?”  James asked.
“No.  There’s no way,” Jensen guessed. “How could he know where you guys were?” YN saw his demeanor change from relief to anger.
“We’re fine, Jay.  Come here,” she opened her arms, inviting him to hug her. “How long were we gone?”
“Eight hours.” Danneel answered.
“Longest eight hours of my life,” Jensen sighed.
“Really?”  YN looked up at him.
“My daughter and her friend were missing.  Of course.”
“Oh,” she saw how much he loved her in that moment.  “I missed you,” she replied.
As they settled in and the police were called, YN and James took a sigh of relief. After they were interviewed and Terry was taken away, the two teens were evaluated once again.
“Oh, YN.” Jensen said in sorrow. As she was being examined, he saw scratch marks and cuts. With her casted foot and ankle, she slowly maneuvered on her bed so that staff could inspect her wounds.
“I’m okay, Jensen.” She looked up at him. “I’ve been through worse,” YN admitted. Without verbal expression, the adults’ eyes went wide.
“That doesn’t make it right that you need to be here because they’re assholes. Excuse me.” Jensen walked out of the room.
“I’m sorry, Dee. I didn’t mean to make him upset.” YN frowned.
“You didn’t. Terry and Susan did. He just doesn’t like that they did all of this to you. You both don’t deserve any of it.”
“But we made our way through, didn’t we, short stuff?” James smiled. YN weakly turned up her lips in response.
———-
After recovering in the hospital, James went back to school, and YN went home with the Ackles’.
“Stop, James!” YN giggled. “I’m fine,” she told him on the phone.
“You having bad dreams? I wish I could have protected you from-“ he started.
“You did. Now both of them are in jail. How’s school?”
“It’s good. My professors gave me a break since we got hurt.”
“They better, or I’ll come knock some sense into them,” YN sighed.
“DINNER!” Jensen gelled up the stairs.
“Oh, I gotta go. I’ll talk to you later, Jamie.”
“Okay. Love you, YN.”
As they hung up, she tossed her phone on her bed and heard Jensen walking toward her room.
“Ready for your taxi down the stairs?” He smiled.
“Yeah,” YN sighed. She sat up on her bed.
“What’s wrong?”
“Well, let’s see: I was raised by an ass and his wife, got kidnapped with my friend, and then I was attacked in my hospital room.”
“Is that all?” Jensen gave a weary smile. “Don’t give up. You-“
“I’m not, Jensen. It’s just so much.”
“I know. I didn’t mean to make light of it. I’m sorry.”
“They used to throw me on the basement.” She abruptly stated.
“Oh?”
“Yeah. Being back there was hard.”
“I’m sure.” Jensen empathized.
“If I didn’t do something right he would take me down there. This isn’t my first busted ankle. Terry would throw me down the stairs to the basement.”
She went on to describe other things that he did to her. By the end of her story, Jensen was in tears.
“Are you listening to me?” He asked her.
“Yeah,” she didn’t dare look at him.
“YOU deserve to be treated like you are the most important girl in the world. You hear me? Not like how they treated you. You will never feel like that here. I’m going to do my damndest to make sure you never go through that again.”
“Okay,” a whisper all she could muster.
“Do you believe me, Princess?”
“Yeah.”
“Good. Your carriage is here to take you to your throne in the royal dining room.” He grinned.
“Oh, stop!” She held her stomach trying to hold in her giggles. “I’m ready, thank you, Jensen.” She scooted to the side of her bed.
———-
3 Weeks Later
“Hi, YN.” Her psychologist greeted her at his office.
“Hey, doc,” she walked into the private room.
“I’m so very happy to see you. I’m glad you’re okay.” He grinned widely.
“Me too.”
“Have a seat, let’s get started.” He escorted her to the couch.
As they met for the first time since YN and James has been kidnapped, she told her psychologist about all of the same feelings she had years ago while in the care of Susan and Terry.
“I think we should go back to what we used to do. It will help you to work through what you’ve been through.”
“Not the notebook! Please, I hate it!” YN practically cried.
“What? I thought you liked it.”
“But that means I’m not doing any better!” YN grabbed a pillow and held it against herself. “I don’t want to,” she whispered.
“YN, this is not to penalize you. Let’s start this conversation over. Do you remember why I had you write in a notebook?”
“Yeah. It was to tell you how I felt without looking at you because it made me nervous.”
“Right. Do you think you can tell me face-to-face?”
“I’m not sure.”
“Why don’t you write down what you’re feeling this week, and then we can talk about it face to face next time. If you feel that you can’t, you can hand me the notebook, and we talk about something else.”
“Fine. But just so you know, I don’t like it.” She crosses her arms. “Can I type it? I get distracted sometimes because my brain thinks faster than my hand can write.”
“I would like you to try the notebook first,” he weakly smiled.
“Really, doc?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Fine, but it’s only because I like you.”
“Good enough for me, kiddo.”
Abruptly YN changed the subject.
“I told them.”
“What?”
“I told Dee and Jensen about what they did to me.”
“Wow. Do you feel good about it?” The psychologist placed his pen and paper on the table in front of him.
“Yeah. I mean, I’ve been with them for a while.”
“I’m very proud of you.”
“I don’t know what I’m doing.” YN huffed, insecure of her decision all of a sudden.
“What do you mean?”
“I’m so messed up.  I can’t handle all of this.”  YN cried until she was gasping for air, hicupping through her tears.  “It’s too much.” Once YN had stopped wailing, she sniffled.
“I am going to tell you something, and I don’t want you to respond right away, okay?” The doctor looked expectantly at her.
“Okay.”
“It’s really hard to battle, to constantly fight whatever it is.  Depression, anxiety, foster parents.  It gets tiring.  I know you have expressed that every time you feel that you have made progress you think you have gone back to square one because of Terry, Susan, or something else that has happened.  That’s simply not true, though.”
“But-”
“Just listen, please.  I am not saying this just to make you feel better.  What I am about to tell you is fact.  I am a very smart man, and you are a very smart young lady.” He took a deep breath and watched her pick at the fringe on the pillow in front of her.  “You are one of the most resilient people I know.  You have fought and fought.  You’re still here.  I know it is so hard to keep fighting to live a productive life.  You could have given up fighting for yourself a long time ago, but you didn’t.  This newest family has been really good for you.  Are you still listening?” He checked in with her.
“Yeah,” she whispered.
“I don’t want you to give up, so I have an idea…”

After their fun day in Austin, YN played with Jensen and JJ, throwing a small football around the backyard. YN and Jensen started laughing when she tumbled while trying to catch a hard throw from him. YN playfully charged at Jensen in mock retaliation for making her fall over just as Donna stood up from her lawn chair to refill her water glass. Giggling and focused, she had almost reached Jensen when she plowed into Donna instead, knocking her to the ground. Everyone froze as she yelped and hit the ground. HARD. Donna groaned on the ground holding her hip.
“Oh- Donna! Oh no. I’m so sorry!”
“Here, Mom, I’ll help you up.” Jensen extended his hand, but she could not roll over and sit up on her own. Kneeling down, he checked her over, discovering that  Her left side was tender to the touch and looked discolored. Concerned her injury was worse than he could safely diagnose, Jensen shouted into the house for Danneel to call an ambulance.
……..
“I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to, and she got hurt, and-“
“YN!” Danneel startled her foster daughter. “It was an accident. Relax.” She rubbed YN’s arm while watching the paramedics load Donna into an ambulance.
YN ran back into the house with audible sniffles fading as she entered. The rest of the family could hear her feet scrambling up the stairs in quick succession.
“We’ll follow you to the hospital, Mom. You’re going to be okay. Love you.” Jensen released Donna’s hand. He went up to YN’s room with Zeppelin on his hip and knocked. No answer. “I’m coming in, YN.” He slowly opened her door. She sat at the end of her bed with a blank face. “It’s not your fault, kid.”  No response. “I am going to follow Grandma to the hospital. Dee will be here with you and the younger ones. Just- it was an accident. Don’t beat yourself up.” When he didn’t receive a verbal reply or glance, he shut her door, sighing. Jensen walked down the stairs. “Here,” he gave Zeppelin to Danneel and grabbed his keys. “Check on her in a little bit. She wouldn’t even talk when I was just in there.”
——-
Once the twins went to bed, Danneel and JJ entered YN’s room to check on her.
“YN? Grandma is okay. She just has a booboo,” the five year old ran to YN’s bed. When JJ turned the covers back excitedly, YN wasn’t there. Pillows peaked out from under the blankets. “Mommy?” JJ turned to Danneel.
“Dammit. Come here, JJ.”
“But… Where she go?”
“Not sure, love. Let’s go find her.”
————
I hurt her.
One of my few friends. My family?
Great job, YN.
You don’t deserve them.
All you do is hurt people.
Running away is best for everyone.
YN had gathered her things and exited the front door while everyone in the house was seated the movie room. She felt awful and ashamed for what she had done. YN was having too much fun and wasn’t paying attention.
It’s all my fault.
I can’t believe I did that.
Grow up, YN. Stop acting like a kid.
You never were a kid. You aren’t one now. You don’t get to play.
So much for being in a family. Screwed that up pretty good.
They’re going to hate me now.
———
Danneel tried calling YN’s phone, but discovered the device ringing in the blankets on the girl’s bed. Not wanting to worry Jensen,  she asked her parents to come watch the little ones before searching for her foster daughter. Danneel was hoping that YN hadn’t gotten far, but it was dark and rainy by the time Danneel was able to go look for YN.
Driving around the neighborhood, she didn’t see her and started to really worry. “Where are you, YN? Please be okay.”
A few miles down the main road, Danneel spotted a small light flickering on the side of the street. “Found her! Thank goodness.” Danneel thought to herself as she saw YN in a bright green sweatshirt and sweats, walking down the road, flashlight in hand, holding her backpack over her head in a measly attempt to stay dry
“YN!” Danneel yelled for her attention as she pulled off to the side of the road. YN looked up.
Aw, shit.
YN’s shoulders tightened as she picked up the pace.
Danneel shut the car off and ran after her. “YN, wait!” The mom yelled, snagging her forearm to turn the wary child around.
“You don’t get to just leave this family,” Danneel yelled over the rain drops hitting her jacket. Soaking wet, they both stilled for a beat.
“But- but, I hurt her!”
“Yeah. So?” Danneel yelled back.
“Huh?”
Danneel pulled her into the car and shut the door.
“Sometimes that happens. Sometimes shit happens. Even in families. People get hurt sometimes. You hurt them sometimes. You knocked her over. So what? It was an accident! Bad timing. JJ and I came in to tell you that Donna would be fine, but you weren’t there. I was so scared we’d lost you.”
“Oh.”
“C’mon. Let’s go home and get you warmed up,” Danneel pulled back into the road and turned around.
————-
“You did what?” Jensen yelled from the other end of the phone. “You ran away? Out in this storm?! Are you crazy?”
“She’s home and warm now, babe. Go deal with your mom’s stuff, we got this.” Danneel hung up.
“Please don’t tell Sarah! She will kill me! She’ll take me away...” YN was practically on her knees begging.
“Relax. It’s okay. I know why you got upset. Just breathe. But you know now that you can’t just run away, right?”
“Yeah,” YN answered. “It’s a family thing. I’m not used to having a family,” she shrugged. Danneel took her hand.
“I know. This is just part of it though. I know you feel scared and angry and sad that you hurt Donna, but she’s going to be fine, and I’m sure she isn’t mad. Okay?”
“Jensen is. He said I was careless and needed to stop horsing around! He was playing too!”
“I know. He shouldn’t have said that. You need to be a kid. Tomorrow, we are going to do all the kid things we can. Don’t worry about him.”
“It’s okay. Thanks anyway,” YN tried to stand. Danneel held onto her hand and pulled YN back down to the couch.
“No. You need to be a kid. As long as you don’t mind the little ones coming, we will have a kid-only day tomorrow,” Danneel beamed. “Please let me do this for you.”
“Really?” YN questioned warily, acquiescing after a moment of hesitation. “I guess that could be ok… Thank you.” She engulfed Danneel in a hug almost squishing Zeppelin on the mom’s lap. “Oh, oops. Sorry, little dude.” She said, ruffling the toddlers hair.
—————-
“You got a lot of nerve, kid!” Jensen stomped into the living room. Zep startled and let out an indignant wail..
“JENSEN!” Danneel chastised. “Go upstairs. Now!”
YN walked up to Jensen and punched him in the arm. Hard.
YN tried to skirt her way out of the room, fearing that she’d been too bold even though he said to do it, but Danneel stopped her. “You stay. His attitude doesn’t affect our conversation.” Turning back to her husband, she scowled, “Get ahold of yourself, Jay. Now.” She saw him take a deep breath. His narrowed eyes relaxed.
He was taken aback by her action, indignation crossing his features before he remembered.
Oh right, I told her to. Shit.
“Are you okay, YN?” Jensen offered a relieved smile.
“I’m fine,” she whispered in a defensive tone.
“Good. I’m glad. Did Dee tell you that my mom is going to be okay?”
“Yes,” she sighed.
“Good. I think I owe you. Would you like some hot chocolate and a long list of I’m sorry’s, YN?” He raised a brow.
“Umm. Hot chocolate sounds good. But I can do it. It’s okay.” She tried to stand up, but Jensen asked her to sit down. “Okay.”
…..
“Here. My special recipe. Hope you like it.” Jensen smiled, proud of himself.
“Wow. It’s good. Thank you.” YN looked down at her shoes.
“I know you’re scared right now. And I’m sorry. You’ve been through a lot already, and I am-“
“I’m okay. Can I just go upstairs, please?”
“Just- just wait. I’m stressed with work and stuff, and I just want to provide for you. I just want you to be happy and safe, okay? I know it I haven’t shown you that very well. I want to start over. Is that okay with you?”
“Sure, I guess.” She offered a sad smile.
_________
The next day, Danneel and the kids, YN included, went to visit Donna in the hospital.
“Oh, Donna, I’m so sorry!” YN wailed when she saw the woman in the hospital, gripping the side of Danneel’s shirt, holding close to her foster mother in fear of a delayed retaliation.
“Sweetie,” Donna gave her a forgiving smile. “It’s not your fault. It was an accident. Accidents happen, silly girl! Come here.” YN didn’t move. “You won’t break me, I promise.” YN slowly tiptoed toward the hospital bed, shifting to grip Danneel’s hand for reassurance [moral support?]. When she reached the edge of the bed, Donna took her other hand. “It’s okay, sweetheart. If anyone is at fault here, it’s me. I wasn’t paying attention, y’all were playing and running all around, and I got myself in the way. I doubt you even saw me or had any time to react. This is NOT your fault. Please believe that.”
“But I hurt you!”
“Stop,” Donna smiled. “I’m not mad at you. No one is mad at you. You did nothing wrong. Promise. Please let it go.”
“Actually, we have some fun things to do today,” Danneel chimed in. “Come on, time to say goodbye, YN.”
“Okay. Bye, Mimi. I hope you feel better soon.”
The group left the hospital and started their kid day. They went to breakfast, ordered funny-shaped pancakes and hot chocolate. YN giggled at the chocolate all over the twins’ faces.
“Was it good?” Danneel saw the joy on YN’s face.
“Yes. I need to get this again!”
“Awesome. You got a little something-“ Danneel started. Zeppelin stuck a napkin in YN’s face.
“Oh, thanks, Z.” YN took the napkin and wiped her face.
________
Next, the family went to the zoo. YN was amazed at all the animals. JJ dragged YN around the park to show her all of her favorite creatures. They took pictures and Danneel became a bit of an overzealous mom about reapplying sunscreen, but they all had a good time. They went home for lunch so that the little ones could take an afternoon nap. Danneel and Jensen surprised YN with teaching YN how to ride a bike.
“No.”  She refused, scared and embarrassed to learn as a teenager.
“Baby, I’ve got a helmet, and elbow and knee pads. You’ll be safe. I promise it will be worth it.” Jensen said.
“Don’t I at least get training wheels?”
“This is my bike and it doesn’t come with training wheels. You’ll thank me. Please just trust me. At least sit on it.” He moved out of the way so that she could swing her leg over the side of the bike. She slowly walked toward it. After she straddled the bike, she moved the handlebars to test out the contraption. Feet still on the ground, Jensen put the helmet on her slowly. “I’ll make you a deal.”
She looked up at him with a questioning expression. “Huh?”
“If you can ride this bike around the block by the end of tomorrow, I’ll take you to set with me this week.” He grinned. “Deal?”
“But- But how? I have school,” she gave him a skeptical side eye look and shrugged.
“I’ll let you in on a little secret. The school is tailored to families like ours who travel a lot to spend time together. It’s fine.”
“What? Really?”
“Yep.”
Narrowing her eyes to suss out if she could believe him, she relented. “Fine, but you’re not allowed to make fun of me. Okay?”
Jensen saw her confidence plummet.
“I would never. Here. Put these pads on too.” He handed her the soft protectors for her elbows and knees. “You will fall down, you should just accept that now, but with these you will only get a little scraped up. Nothing major.”
“I don’t want to. It’s embarrassing.” YN almost hiccuped from the impending swell of tears.
“No one is out here except for me. I promise I am only here to help.”
“Okay. Fine.” She rolled her eyes and took the elbow and knee pads from him. He held the bike to balance it while she velcroed them on.
“The balls of your feet are what push the pedals. I’m going to hold the handle and the back of the bike seat. When you’re going fast enough, the forward movement will help you keep your balance, and I’ll let go. The brakes are right here,” he pointed to the levers on the handlebars. “Squeeze them and you’ll stop. Got it?”
“I think so.”
“You’re going to go to the end of the driveway—slowly, but not too slow— and then stop and put your feet down. Okay? Ready?” She put her feet on the pedals while he balanced the bike. She nodded. Her left foot pushed down. YN got scared, squealing, but Jensen kept pushing her anyway. He ran alongside her until the handlebars stopped wavering and she maintained a straight path. Letting go, he watched as she struggled to keep up with the pedals. She slammed on the brakes and fell to the side, yelping.
“Nope, done. Don’t care. Thanks anyway, Jensen.” Shaking, she stood up and ripped the pads off. Backing away from the bike, she walked toward the house.
“Stop!”
She froze.
“You’ve done it once. Come on. Nobody gets it on the first try. You have to practice and make mistakes and fall down to learn. This is part of being a kid. You’ll get the hang of it.” He turned her around by her shoulders to face him. “What did you learn from your first time doing this?”
“That I suck!”
“Oh, stop it. Come on, really.”
“My feet couldn’t keep up. I slammed the brakes too hard and forgot to put my feet out like you said to.”
“Right. So how can we fix it?” Jensen released her, dropping his hands down to his sides. She shrugged. “If you feel like you are starting to lose control, slowly squeeze the brakes. That will give you time to catch up on your pedaling. Okay?” YN sighed.
“Okay.”
The next time down the driveway, she did better, making it further down the driveway before skidding to a stop using her outstretched feet. At the end of the day, YN could start, stop, and turn fairly well.
“Nice job today, kid. Proud of you.” Jensen gave a high five.
“Thanks, Jensen.” She smiled, looking down, embarrassed.
Although a few tears were shed and scrapes happened, YN beamed going up and down the street on Jensen’s bicycle.
“Now,” he started. “If you can get around the block in the next five minutes, I’ll take you to set. I know you’ve been wanting to go. Ready?”
“No. That’s not a long time, Jensen. I’ll have to go too fast, and you’ll be further away.” YN sighed, defeated.
“Yes, you can do it. Control your speed, don’t rush.”
“Okay.” After a deep breath, she put her feet on the pedals. He started a timer and she sped off. Soon enough, she came around the other side.
“Four minutes!” Jensen smiled. She slammed on the brakes, falling into Jensen. He caught her, but they both hit the ground. “You okay?” He laughed.
“Yeah! It was great!” She giggled into his chest.
“What in the world?” Danneel stepped outside.
“We’re fine, Dee. Relax.”
YN untangled herself from the bike and moved away from Jensen. He groaned as she tried to scoot off of him.
“Sorry!” Her face was laced in fear.
“I’m fine, sweetheart. It’s okay. I’d appreciate some help though,” he grinned. After a sigh of relief, Danneel went back inside, and YN reached a hand down to help Jensen in stand.
“Does this mean— Can I go to set with you now? I know I knocked you over, and I’m so sorr-“ She rambled and apology.
“Relax. Yes, you can. I’ll set it up.”
“Really?” She screamed. Running into his arms, she almost knocked him over again with a giant tackling hug.

“Get your rear in here now!” John yelled for his youngest child. YN exited the motel bathroom and walked toward her father. “What’s this?” He shook a gun without a magazine in her face. “I told you to clean the guns and they’re all over the place!” He tossed the gun to her. She fumbled to catch it. “Typical.” John turned around and opened the motel door. They better be done when he gets back from Dean’s run. I’m going out.” He slammed the door behind him.
“Ugh!” YN groaned. She made fists and hit them on the nearest motel bed.  YN sat down and finished wiping down the weapons. As she zipped up the bag, Dean walked in.
“Hey, YN.” As he walked passed her, he wiped his face with his open hand and then smeared his sweat on the back of YN’s neck while she was seated, facing the other way.
“Eww! You suck! Go shower!”
“Got ya! Be out in a few.” Dean made his way to the motel bathroom to get cleaned up.
After John came back from the bar, he woke YN with a shout.
“What did I say?!” He growled. “These guns aren’t clean!”
Dean shot up out of bed at the sudden noise.
“She did. I checked.” The older brother rubbed his eyes.
“There is something on this one! She didn’t wipe all the oil off. Clean them all again!”
“Dad! I’m sorry! I am so tired. Please just-“
“Now.” He demanded. She rolled her eyes when he looked away. YN stood up without a word and sat at the table.
“Sorry, Dean. I’m going to have to have the light on.” YN quietly apologized to her brother.
“Get these clean. I need to check on something. I will see you both in the morning.” John left the motel room.
“YN, let me help you. It’s my fault-“
“Leave it, Dean. Go to sleep. It’s fine.”
————
“Dean always wins when you shoot. Your training will be increased. Dean, work out with her. Teach her. She’s not good enough.” John stared at YN.
“Sir, she’s doing great. I have better vision and she is half my age. YN is-“
“Failing. She is failing. Do it.”
———-
YN had enough. She had begun training to hunt, but no matter what she did, she never pleased her father. Dean tried to be a buffer, but that did not help much. Having Sam gone to Stanford was an added loss for her. She had always been close to Sam while Dean took the role of protector for both of them.
“YN, did you wash my clothes?” Dean walked into the motel room they were staying at for the night. She was nowhere to be found. “YN!” He found a note near the coffee maker.
Blame Dad. I love you, Dean.

A few minutes later, they heard a scream.
“We are here to celebrate the life of YN, a daughter, sister, and friend, who was taken too soon.”
The Ackles’ held back tears as they leaned into each other in the front row of the church. They had flashbacks to that horrible night where they found JJ screaming after she saw YN on the floor of her own room. YN had a seizure- and it killed her.
Danneel gave the eulogy, a very sweet remembrance of her daughter. Next, Jensen sang one of YN’s favorite songs while playing guitar. He couldn't make it through the whole song without excusing himself. Jensen brought the shoulder strap over his head and put it back on the stand.
He walked out of the sanctuary. Danneel chased after him. To keep the schedule, friends and family shared their memories of her with the attendees while Jensen and Danneel talked in the foyer.
“Jay! I know, I know. Come here,” Danneel grabbed Jensen’s arm, spun him around, and attacked him with the biggest hug she could muster.
“I can’t, Dee! She’s gone! YN is- was- my girl. How-“
“Me too, Jay. Come here,” Danneel pulled him into an empty side room. They sat down on an old pew. “Lie down,” she positioned herself so that his head was in her lap. She ran her fingers through his hair. “Cry, baby, I’m right there too.”
———-
“AHHH!” Jensen woke himself up from a nightmare with a shout.
“Mr. Ackles?” A doctor walked up to where Jensen was seated in YN’s hospital room.
“Yes, ma’am?” He stood, rubbed his eyes and shook her hand.
YN is alive. Breathe.
“I’m Dr. Mariah. I came to check on YN earlier, but you had fallen asleep. Is now a good time for me to update you on her status?”
“Oh, yes. Of course,” he walked into the hallway with her.
“She had what we call a tonic-clonic seizure. It’s also known as a grand mal. Since she was asleep and you were not close by while it was occurring, we don’t know how many she has had tonight. Have you heard of this kind of seizure before?”
“She has had seizures previously, but I don’t know the name for it.”
“Well, these can be very severe, sir,” the doctor plainly stated. “Her brain is fighting the reorganization that has gone on. She is very tired as you can tell.”
“So, will she be okay?”
“She has to wake up first, Mr. Ackles. YN is probably exhausted. Her brain and body have been through a lot. That would be my guess as to why she has not even stirred yet,” the doctor reiterated.
“Okay, thank you,” Jensen sadly shook her hand. After she left the hallway, Jensen called his wife to update her.
————
“No, nothing,” Jensen answered Jared’s question over the phone.
“Damn, that girl is stubborn,” he responded.
Jensen chuckled. “Always has been.”
“The nanny, Gen, and I will take the kids. Dee should be there soon.”
“I knew I loved you,” Jensen said. “Thanks, man.”
“Don’t ever deny it!” Jared laughed.
———-
YN’s eyes opened. Her head hurt, and she was disoriented. She frantically tried to get up from the bed.
“No, YN!” Danneel put her hands over YN’s as she tried to get rid of her tubes.
“Hey! YN, you’re okay. Relax, sweetheart.”
Sweetheart? I know that voice.
YN froze after the prompts from her parents. She took in her surroundings and dropped the tubes that were occupying her hands.
“You’re okay, YN,” Jensen said calmly. YN’s muscles relaxed, and she leaned back on the bed.
“Umm- Da- Danneel? Jo-, no. Jensen.”
“Yes, sweetheart. You’re safe, I promise.”
“Thank goodness. You’re awake,” Danneel sighed.
She barely remembered our names. Short term memory loss, says the doctor. We can deal with this.
———
A few days after YN woke up, she was released to go home.
“What are your meds still doing here? I gave them to you five minutes ago, kiddo,” Danneel handed the pills to YN. “You can’t leave them out. The babies will think they are candy.”
“Oh. Sorry, Dee,” YN said solemnly.
“Are you okay?”
“Perfect, why?”
“You only say ‘perfect’ when you aren’t perfect, YN,” Danneel chuckled at the irony. YN started crying suddenly. “What, baby? Why are you upset?”
“That night-“ she sniffled. “I didn’t take them on purpose. I’M SORRY, OKAY… I’m so sorry,” YN whispered and ran into Danneel’s arms.
Danneel accepted the hug, but she was miffed.
“What? You skipped your meds?” Danneel backed away and put her hands on YN’s shoulders so that they were face-to-face. The daughter nodded. “Why? Why would you put yourself in danger like that?”
“I couldn’t- I didn’t think I could do it anymore,” YN cried loudly. “The seizures, school, family stuff. I can’t catch a break! I thought if I didn’t take the pills, I might have a really big seizure and then problem solved. I’m so sorry, Dee!” Danneel’s shirt was soaking wet from YN’s tears.
She tried to- ah shit.
“Oh, sweet girl!” Danneel gasped and held back her own tears as she pulled her oldest child into her chest. YN started shaking and collapsed to the floor.  Danneel went down with her to ease the fall. “Don’t you EVER scare me like that again. You understand me?” Danneel put her palms on YN’s cheeks and shook her wrists. She jostled YN just enough to keep her attention. “Don’t you dare think that you are a mistake or forgotten!” Danneel wrapped her arms around YN, and YN nodded vigorously.
“I know! I’m so sorry! I just-“
“You are so valuable, why can’t you see that?” Danneel said out of desperation rather than anger.
As emotions settled, they FaceTimed Jared together to work through what to do next while seated on the kitchen floor.
“Oh, YN. I got you. We all do. Please come to us next time. We love you,” said Jared.
“I know.”
After Danneel and YN calmed down with Jared, Jensen was alerted of the situation. He wanted to fly home immediately, but his girls refused.
“No, Jensen. I’m good. Stay at work.  I’ll do whatever you want, just stay there. Dee and I got this for now.”
“No-“
“Yes, Jay. We’re fine.” Danneel assured him.
“Okay, but you have to call me every day, YN. If I call, you pick up, got it?” Jensen expectantly waited for an answer.
“Yes, I promise,” she smiled. “I know you’ll fly home and kick my ass if I don’t.”
“Damn straight.  And you do whatever Jared suggests. ALL of it.”
“Yes, sir” YN sighed in relief.
————
The next few weeks were difficult, but the family got into a rhythm again. YN had promised to pick up some structured hobbies to keep busy and got a referral for Jared’s therapist.
“Mom! It’s here!” YN yelled with excitement.
“Okay, Cool.  When are you going to give it to him?” Danneel asked.
“This weekend. He’ll be gone for cons later in the month.” YN realized.
—————
“Hey, Jensen! Can you grab my license? I left it in the counter!” YN yelled into the kitchen.
“You just got this in the mail yesterday, kiddo. Don’t lose it,” he walked it over to her.
Her plan was going swimmingly.
“Hey, that’s weird. Look at my name.” She handed it back to him.
YN MN ACKLES
“That’s not right. Did they accidentally put the wrong name?” Jensen looked at it again.
“Actually… I changed my last name. Dee helped.”
“What?” He was taking it all in. “You did this? Your last name is really Ackles?”
“Well, yeah. I don’t even know the man who I got MY last name from.  Why would I keep it when I am an Ackles anyway?” She beamed.
“You are so sneaky! Come here, YN!” He opened his stance. YN ran into his arms. He picked her up, spun her around, and then they crash-landed on the couch.
“I love you, Dad.”

AN- All the angst (and some Jared) for @find-sammys-shoe
They ran up to Jensen and asked for an autograph, but then the unexpected happened.  Instead of getting Jensen’s autograph, they pulled out a gun.
________
“Hey, no need for that,” Jensen spoke with a waver in his voice to the boys holding them.
“Daddy,” Addy asked for help with the tone of her voice.
“I know,” he responded quietly.  “Poughkeepsie,” Jensen whispered. Addy dropped to the ground as her dad punched the man who was holding her. “RUN!” He yelled at his daughter while the culprits fought him.  Addy crouched and then stood up, sprinting to the Ackles’ car. Hiding behind it, she called for emergency services. Her chest heaved with adrenaline pumping through her body. After what felt like hours later, she saw blinking lights coming into the parking lot. After pointing to where she had been taken around the building, one officer stayed with her while others followed Addy’s directions to find her dad. Soon she saw officers assisting Jensen away from the building. The culprits were in cuffs and shoved into police cars.
“Daddy!” She screamed for him as she took in his appearance. He favored his left side, leaning on an EMT.  Cuts everywhere, he smiled with relief when he saw that his daughter was okay. Addy tried to hug him, but he was too weak. He limped to the ambulance and crash-landed onto the stretcher.  With a grunt, he maneuvered himself to a somewhat comfortable position.
“Baby, you need to go to the hospital too. You’re cut up a little bit. Come on,” he gestured while being pushed into the ambulance.
“What about the car?”
“Miss, you can have family pick it up later. We want to make sure you aren’t injured,” the EMT informed her. Her body shaking, she climbed into the ambulance and sat on the bench.
“Okay, thank you.” She weakly smiled.
“She got knocked out,” Jensen stated, motioning to his daughter.
“No I didn’t.”
“Yeah, you did. They pistol-whipped you. By the time we got back around the side of the building you had come to. You just don’t remember.” Jensen explained.
“Oh,” Addy said quietly. Once Jensen was stable in the ambulance, the EMTs turned their attention to her.
“Look at me, please,” the emergency responder prompted with a flashlight aimed at her face. When she did, the EMT saw that her eyes exhibited a concussion.
“Great,” Addy responded, sarcastic.
“You are getting checked out when we get there as well as your dad. You both are not going to get worse while I’m around.” The EMT smiled.
Addy grabbed her dad’s hand. Jensen smiled through his cut up lips and bloodied teeth. When Addy saw, she frowned. Jensen realized what she observed.
“We’ll survive, princess. I’m okay.”
————
“What is up with you two? Every time I leave you alone something happens.” Danneel looked between the two ER beds.
“Sorry, Mom.”
“Yeah. Sorry, Mom.” Jensen laughed.
“Seriously, I need to bubble wrap you two,” Danneel rolled her eyes.
————
“They’re both on edge. I don’t know what to do.” Danneel spoke to Gen over the phone. Can you send him over please? They need him.”
“Sure,” she answered.
Before Danneel did anything else, Jared walked through the front door.
“They’re on the couch. Sudden movements and sounds scare them, so just FYI.” Danneel informed her friend.
He walked in and saw sullen and tired faces.
“Long night? You both look like crap.” Jared joked. Both Ackles’ didn’t react. “Earth to Addy. Jensen?” Melancholy, they both turned to him.
“What?” Jensen asked plainly.
“South Park. We are watching it. You two need distraction.”
“Just let us sulk, Uncle Jared.”
“Nope. Both of you didn’t do well the last time you sulked. Give me the remote.”
————-
Their psychologist increased check-ins with the Ackles’. Both Jensen and Addy regressed after the incident, but Addy struggled more.  With her senses on high alert, she was very wary.
“I do that too, Addy. We just have to breathe through it. People don’t mean to, and they won’t cater to us either.”
“You sound like Mom.” Addy laughed over the phone. “I know. Are you doing okay?”
“Yeah, a little.” Jensen answered.
“Good. I am happy for you, Dad.:
—————-
“Addy! Let’s go!” The next time Jensen was home, he dragged Addy out of bed to get some exercise.
Tumblr media
“Batting cages?” Addy raised a brow as they pulled into the parking lot.
“Yep!” Jensen smiled, reminiscing of his glory days.
“I can’t hit.”
“You’ve never tried, princess. I’ll show you. This is for you to feel in control. You can do this.”
———-
“Don’t drop your shoulder! Swing through! Not down!” Jensen shouted over the machine spitting baseballs out toward his daughter.
“Dad, I can’t! I can’t do this shit!” She dropped her arms and huffed as the baseballs clanked the fence without her attention.
“Yes, you can. Bat up. Come on.” He saw her defeated frown. “Look,” He motioned to her, “you CAN do this. Do you want to feel better? Like, really feel better?”
“Yeah, of course.” She walked over to him as he stopped the machine.
“Then do this. It’s just like life. You don’t know what you’re doing at first so you practice, live life, and then you reach your goals even though it's frustrating and hard. Feeling better isn’t easy. We both know that. You have to fight. You got this.” He turned the machine back on. She looked over her shoulder at it. “Go.” He slowly nudged to to the home plate inside the cage. He saw her wipe away a tear and take her stance.
After a few balls flew past her, she controlled her breathing and swung. The sound of the baseball hitting the metal bat echoed the empty room. She continued this, sorting out her thoughts in her head. Getting angry and determined, she finished without missing a single pitch. She turned around when the time ran out with red eyes. Without anything said, Jensen opened his arms to her. She dropped the bat, hearing it clang on the cement and entered his embrace. “It’s hard, but we got this. We fight because it’s worth it. I love you, princess.”

Who Is This? Part 1
Who Is This?
AN- New series!  Thanks to @cherryblossom1997 and @iliketowrite !
Warnings: language, family fight
Summary: A daddy saves his daughter.
John, Dean, Sam, YN
Word Count: 500
Tumblr media
“Daddy?” The little girl ran into his arms with tears on her face.
“Hi, sweetheart. It’s okay, come here,” he engulfed her into his chest.
“Mommy gone!” She yelled through her wails.
“I know, I know.” He rubbed her back until she quieted.
———-
“Boys!” John pounded on the motel door while holding a three year-old.
Dean got his gun and holy water and welcomed them both with a splash of liquid in the face.
“Eww! Daddy! He mean!” YN whined and pointed at Dean.
‘Dad’? What?
“SAM!” The older sibling yelled for the fluffy-haired younger sibling.
John entered and put the unknown girl into a chair.
Sam came running out of the bathroom.
“What… oh. Who is this?” He looked at John, confused.
“This is YN, your little sister,” John sighing as he was found out.
The boys’ eyes went wide.
“Daddy! Who dem? I scared. They strangers!”
“No, they’re not. This is Dean and Sam. They are your brothers. No need to be scared.” He smiled lightly and crouched down to be eye-level with her. “You’re safe, I promise.”
————
“Seriously, Dad? You banged a girl and now the girl has a girl?!” Sam berates his father.
“Had. YN’s mom died yesterday.”
Dean and Sam’s facial expressions changed from anger to sadness.
“So is she with us now? You interrupt our lives because all of a sudden you have another kid? You’re so careless!” Sam continued his tirade.
“Shut up, Sam! I only figured out who she was about six months ago. Ran into YN’s Mom on a job.”
“Is that why you’ve been gone so much?” Dean asked. “She obviously knows you. And trusts you.”
“Yes, that’s why.”
Dean wanted to rebuke his father, but he was a good son who followed his father’s lead.
“How old is she? She seems sweet.” Dean looked at John.
“Dean, don’t!” Sam saw Dean’s attachment growing.
“Dad wants her here, she is staying! And if we don’t be quiet she will hear us out here!”
“She is not our responsibility!” Sam retorted.
“She’s mine.” John firmly stated.
“Yeah, so don’t dump her on us!” Sam argued.
All of a sudden they heard crying from inside the motel room. As they walked in, they could tell she was upset by her shaking body.
“What’s wrong, YN?” John sat on her bed.
“No yell! I want Mommy!”
“We’re sorry we scared you. Sometimes adults talk loud, but everything is fine, YN,” Dean came close and sat on the other side of her.
“Oh. Well, you should not yell. It not nice, Weenie.”
Sam busted into laughter.

Scout Was A Secret 2

Word Count: 2089
Warnings: Language, gruff Dean, sassy Scout
Scout arrived in Lebanon, Kansas.  Using her resources, she found out that the guy she talked to was most-likely her father.  Scout was told about the bunker.  It scared her as she had never encountered one, but she was strong-willed and determined to find him.
Scout pulled up in her old, beat up car.  Her door squeaked as she shut it and walked toward the heavy door.  Scout knocked, but no one answered, so she sat in front of the metal entrance. As she did, she heard a rumble coming down the entrance road.  A man rolled down his window and got her attention.
“HEY! KID!” He started. “Scram! It ain’t haunted, move on!”
“You would know, wouldn’t you? WINCHESTER!”  She spat back at him.  ”I have some business to discuss!” Scout yelled so that he could hear over the roar of his old car.
Dean’s eyes went wide at her mentioning his name.
“Dammit, kid.  Let me put my baby away, and we can talk.”
________
“So, kid-”
“Scout,” she deadpanned.  “You’re Dean, right?  You must be Sam?”  Scout said curtly.
“Never heard of you, Scout.”
“Hadn’t heard of you either, Dean.”
“Okay!  Why don’t we sit?  Yes?”  Sam tried to calm the situation.
After they were seated, Dean was still wondering what was going on.
“You got some business to talk about, huh?”
“Yep.” Scout popped the last syllable.
“What is it then, kid?”  Dean was growing tired of her answers.
“SCOUT!  My NAME is Scout, you ass!”
He put his hands up.
“Sorry, I’m just not used to young hunters,” he recoiled.
“I’m not really a hunter.  I know some hunters now, but I lost someone close to me.”
“Personal?”  Dean looked at her sincerely.
“My mom,” Scout teared up.
“Sorry, ki- Scout,” he reached to touch her arm, but she scooted back. “So why are you here?”
“You know Laura Mayweather?”
“Haven’t seen her in-”
“Little more than sixteen years?”  Scout raised a brow.
“About that, yeah.  Why-” Dean’s eyes went big, and he took a deep breath.
Oh shit.
“According to her, you’re my dad.”  Scout said slowly.
I have a kid.
“My mom told me she didn’t tell you.  I brought my birth certificate.” Scout slid the paper across the table. She saw the blank look on his Dean’s. “You know what- bad idea. I’ll just let myself out,” she shrugged and started to stand.
“You can’t drop something on me like this and leave, Scout,” Dean stood to block her path to the door. “When were you born?”  He picked up the document and saw his name listed as the father.
“February 11, 2002.”
“What’s your full name?”
“Kansas Laura Carlyle,” she responded. The boys’ jaws dropped. “Yes, I know my name is weird. No commentary needed,” she dismissed them.
“No, it’s awesome. Kansas is home.  And it was for your mom too. The band is an added bonus. So why the name Scout?” Dean’s interest skyrocketed.
“Well, she has called me that ever since I can remember. Mom told me I was curious, always up for finding things and getting dirty. She said my dad was like a Boy Scout, knew everything needed to get by in life, and that would be me someday.”
Dean froze.
What? Okay, keep it together.
“That’s very cool, thanks for sharing,” Sam covered for his brother. She smiled at his compliment.
“Are you sure you’re mine?  She could have put anyone’s name on this,” Dean stated flatly, coming back to the reality that he might have a daughter.
“Are you saying my mom is a slut, Winchester?”  Scout growled.
“No!  I just…”  he trailed off.
“Journal, backpage.”
Dean flipped to the last page and saw the same drawing that Scout had.
“Why didn’t Laura say anything?”  Dean looked earnestly at his daughter.
“She told me that you were too good of a hunter, and she also wanted to keep me safe.  My mom said it wouldn’t be fair for either of us, basically.  I didn’t know about you or hunting until after she died.  She told me to look in a chest, and I found the journal,” Scout stated matter-of-factly.
“I gave this to her,” Dean remembered Laura opening his gift.
“So can we talk about all this, please?”
“Talk about what?” Dean asked.
“You. Me. Father and daughter.” she said in a snarky tone. “Can I get to know you?” She crossed her arms.
“You’ve got Laura's sass,” he smiled.
————
“So, you’re sixteen, emancipated, and roughing it in your car?” Dean was skeptical.
“The house was sold, and I don’t have other family. Mom told me in her journal to come find you. She said I could trust you… Can I?”
“Ummm…”
This is a lot.
“Never mind, obviously she was wrong,” Scout stood up and walked toward the bunker stairs.
“Wait!” Dean took hold of her wrist, but she surprised him with twisting his arm behind his back. They both paused, and he whimpered in response.
“Get your hunter hands off me, Winchester. I may not look like it, but I can handle myself just fine. DON’T touch me again, you understand?” She growled in his ear.
“Yeah, got it,” he screeched as she pulled his wrist upward even more.  She pushed him forward after a beat.  He stumbled to gain his balance and saw Sam snicker.
_______
The Winchesters invited Scout to stick around.  Since she had nowhere to go, she did.  Scout picked up on a few things within the first three days of her being in the bunker.
1. Dean gets angry when not fed.
2. Sam is sweet and shows emotions more than Dean.
3. Dean drinks.  A lot.  Maybe I can steal a beer?
4. Sam wants me here, Dean… I’m not so sure.
_______
“HEY!  KID!  Wake up!  Time to go!”  Dean yelled through Scout’s door.
She groaned, rolled over, and looked at the time.
6AM.  Really, Winchester?
“GO AWAY!”  She sassed.
“I will make your life hell, kid!  Let’s go!”
She knew he was kidding, but she also believed him.
“FINE! Fifteen minutes!”  Scout yelled back through the door.
“YOU’VE GOT FIVE!”  Dean’s shoes were heard walking away from her door.
Crap.  I don’t need him mad at me already.  Get up!
“Why in the hell am I up this early?”  She spat at her father after getting ready.
“You’re definitely Dean’s kid, Scout.  He isn’t a morning person either,” Sam was packing up a bag.
“Shut it, Sammy.”  Dean turned to Scout and said, “We have to go get supplies for a hunt.  You’re coming with so that you can learn what we need.  That way you know what to get next time.”
“I ain’t running your errands!  I’m not a personal assistant!  Get your own!  Good night!”  She walked back to her room.  Before she could shut it, Dean stuck his foot between the door and doorframe.
“You said your mom wanted you to come find me, right?”  He asked her with a deep groan.  She rolled her eyes.  “If you are going to live here, you have to own some of the responsibility.  That’s how it works around here.  Now, if you don’t come, we’ll find something else for you to do,” he relaxed his stance and waited.
“Fine, Winchester,” she walked out of her room after he stepped aside.
________
“I want to learn!”  Scout whined.
She had been living with the Winchesters for a few months and had learned to really enjoy her new living accommodations.
“No, I am not teaching you.  Besides, you have a black belt or something anyway,”  Dean retorted.
“What’s wrong with learning to shoot a gun?  You know what’s out there!  Someone might come after me because I’m your kid!  I hate this hunting crap, but I’m a risk.  You know that!”
“Go to school,” Dean said abruptly.
“What?”  Scout confusedly asked.
“Finish high school,”  he stated differently.  “If you re-enroll then I will teach you.”
“No!”
“Then no shooting,” Dean said flatly.
“What does school have anything to do with it?  I took my GED anyway.  I’m done with high school stuff,”  she raised a brow at her father.
“You don’t like hunting, right?”  He returned her question with a question.
“No, but it has worked for you.”
“I had to.  I didn’t have a choice.  Enroll in something.  Get an education.  You’re too smart to be sitting here.”
“So I’m stupid?  Thanks, Dad.”
“You know that’s not what I mean. Do something with your life.  I don’t want this life for you.  You deserve better than your dad and uncle leaving you for days to fend for yourself.”  Dean was irritated.
“I’ll get a job.  It will be fine.”
“Bull- you will not be like-”
“You?  What’s wrong with that?”  Scout stood up to match her father’s stance.
“Sam and I have the weight of the world on our shoulders.  I just don’t want you to live in constant stress.”
“I don’t want you to either, but guess we can’t have what we want!”  Scout stomped down the hallway into her room.
________
“Ah!” Scout screamed when she saw a man appear in the bunker during a conversation between herself and her uncle. She stood up and started to attack when Sam got her attention.
“Stand down!” Sam yelled. “He’s a friend.”
She relaxed in her seat.
“Ummm… did he just come from nowhere?”
Cas looked at her confusedly.
“Cas?”  Dean entered the room.
“Dean! You guys okay?” Cas was frantic.
“Yeah, we’re good. Good to see you,” Dean said calmly as he gave Cas a hug.
Scout didn’t understand what was going on.
She looked at Sam and gestured to her dad and his friend. “Are they gay or something?” She asked innocently.
Sam spit out his drink.
“Well…” Sam left it open for interpretation.
“No! We aren’t gay! He's a friend,” Dean justified. “Did you not hear our prayers, Cas?” He turned from Scout to his angel friend.
“Wait, what?  Prayers?” Scout thought her hearing skills were in question.
“He’s an angel,” Sam responded plainly.
“Huh. Interesting.”
“No- I didn’t hear your prayers while in heaven. Angel radio was full of static for an extended period,” Cas brought back the original conversation.
“Well, meet my daughter, -“
“Kansas,” Cas finished.
“I go by Scout, but yeah. Impressive. I like him,” she giggled.
“You aren’t freaked out that there are angels?”  Sam asked her.
“Well, there are demons, so no.  I guess not,” Scout responded. “I like the idea of angels.”
“You shouldn’t. They’re dicks,” Cas replied seriously.
“Wait, what?”
———-
“Dean!”  Sam yelled through the bunker.  The older Winchester stomped out of his room with bed head-style hair.
“WHAT?”  He yelled back.  “Why are you screaming at me at six in the morning?”  Dean walked over to his younger brother and wacked him on the back of his head.
“Ow!”  Sam pushed Dean away.  “I was going to tell you that I haven’t heard from Scout for the past few days.  Have you seen her?”
“Ummm… I’m not sure.” he shrugged.
Dean’s mood changed.  He and Sam ran to the daughter’s room.
“Scouty?”  Dean roared through the door. They heard a moan.  “I hope you’re decent, kid.  We’re comin’ in!”
As they entered, they saw her sprawled out on her bed, limbs everywhere.
“Hi,” she rasped.
“Sick?”  Sam asked.
Scout nodded.  Sam checked her head for a fever while Dean pulled out some fresh clothes for her.
“Shower and then meds,”  Dean said sternly.
“Dean, I’m fine.”
“You stink, and you didn’t tell us, let’s go.”
“Gee, thanks,” Scout huffed.
“Always here for support.  Come on, I’ll walk you to the bathroom,”  he bent down to stabilize her.
“Fine.  I know I’ll lose a fight to a gigantor and an angry Dean anyway,”  she said sarcastically.
