June 28 (Reuters) - A federal judge in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday dismissed a lawsuit by eight citizens of Mali who sought to hold Hershey Co (HSY.N), Nestle SA (NESN.S), Cargill Inc and others liable for child slavery on Ivory Coast cocoa farms.

The other defendants included privately-held Mars Inc, Mondelez International Inc (MDLZ.O), Barry Callebaut AG (BARN.S) and Olam International Ltd .

The plaintiffs said they were trafficked as children after being approached by unfamiliar men who promised paying jobs, but were ultimately not paid for their labor, threatened with starvation if they did not work, and required to live in squalor.

But they said the plaintiffs' overbroad legal theory could leave too many people liable for forced child labor, including consumers and retailers who might benefit from lower prices.

The plaintiffs accused the companies of aiding and abetting human rights violations through their active involvement in purchasing Ivory Coast cocoa and turning a blind eye to the use of slave labor on the farms despite being aware of the practice in order to keep cocoa prices low.

The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in 2018 revived the claims, citing the allegations that the companies provided "personal spending money" to local farmers to guarantee the cheapest source of cocoa. The 9th Circuit found that the payments were akin to kickbacks and that the low price of cocoa was dependent upon the child slave labor.

US judge Dabney Frederick ruled that these corporations do not have any liability to the 8 plaintiffs who were trafficked from Mali to the Ivory coast as children to work for free on cocoa plantations. as children they are paid in meager food rations, and are threatened with violence if they try to escape. Even though the US corporations admit that they knowingly use child labor and even pay farmers extra for "good" worker discipline and even at times give them training on how to best exploit their child slaves. I tried the Mondelez Swedish Fish And Friends Soft &Chewy Candy and these were pretty good.

These had a light strawberry, watermelon, and fruity flavor.

These were soft and chewy in texture are are like a mix of gummy candy and taffy.

I really like the different shape to these but I remember in the past they had a starfish one.

These were lightly sweet.

I would eat theses again.

Mondelez: Μποϊκοτάζ από Σουηδία και Νορβηγία σε Oreo και Toblerone λόγω Ρωσίας

Το συνεχιζόμενο μποϊκοτάζ κυρίως από τη Σουηδία και τη Νορβηγία στα προϊόντα της ανάγκασε τη Mondelez International να ζητήσει συνάντηση με εκπροσώπους της νορβηγικής κυβέρνησης αυτή την εβδομάδα, με σκοπό να προστατεύσει τις επιχειρήσεις του ομίλου. Οι Νορβηγοί αποφάσισαν να σταματήσουν να πωλούν προϊόντα της Mondelez Int. αφού η εταιρεία εξακολουθεί να δραστηριοποιείται στη Ρωσία, παρά τις δυτικές κυρώσεις.

Αξίζει να σημειωθεί πως η αεροπορική εταιρεία SAS και Norwegian Air, ο σιδηροδρομικός όμιλος SJ, η αλυσίδα ξενοδοχείων Strawberry, η εταιρεία λιανικής πώλησης Elkjop, ο ναυτιλιακός όμιλος Fjord Line και η Νορβηγική Ποδοσφαιρική Ομοσπονδία είναι μεταξύ εκείνων που ανακοίνωσαν τις τελευταίες ημέρες ότι θα σταματήσουν να πωλούν προϊόντα της Mondelez.

Ο παγκόσμιος κατασκευαστής σνακ και παραγωγός των Oreo, Toblerone και δεκάδων άλλων brands, έχει ισχυρή παρουσία στη Νορβηγία και τη Σουηδία μέσω των τοπικών παραγωγών σοκολάτας Freia και Marabou.

Το νορβηγικό υπουργείο Εξωτερικών δήλωσε τη Δευτέρα ότι σχεδιάζει να συναντηθεί με εταιρείες και από τις δύο πλευρές του μποϊκοτάζ, αλλά απέφυγε να συστήσει λύση.

Εναπόκειται στις εταιρείες και τα άτομα να κάνουν ανεξάρτητες επιλογές σχετικά με το τι αγοράζουν και με ποιον συναλλάσσονται, ανέφερε σε δήλωσή του ο υφυπουργός Εξωτερικών Έρλινγκ Ρίμεσταντ.

Ως γνωστόν, οι περισσότερες δυτικές εταιρείες πούλησαν τα ρωσικά περιουσιακά τους στοιχεία μετά την εισβολή της Μόσχας στην Ουκρανία πέρυσι, όμως άλλες, όπως η Mondelez, παρέμειναν παρά τις αντιδράσεις των εργαζομένων σε άλλες χώρες.

Η Mondelez σε ανακοίνωσή της δήλωσε ότι δεν πωλεί προϊόντα ρωσικής κατασκευής στη Νορβηγία και ότι οι επίσημες κατευθυντήριες γραμμές θα πρέπει να βασίζονται σε αντικειμενικά κριτήρια που αντιμετωπίζουν ισότιμα τις εταιρείες.

Η εταιρεία παράλληλα δήλωσε ότι διατηρεί «περιορισμένη» δραστηριότητα στη Ρωσία, ενώ σταμάτησε τις επενδύσεις και τη διαφήμιση και καταδίκασε τον πόλεμο.
