I just finished NDRV3 last night (a bit late I know) so bear with me because I have a theory that’s probably already been done to death but -

So everything Tsumugi said was a lie. Well, nearly everything. She (and Team DGR) did implant new memories into the 15 characters, and they possibly weren’t ultimates. They also weren’t heading into space, there was potentially no meteors, that entire backstory is a lie. In fact, everything from the Flashback Lights we can rule as a lie, unless cross referenced with something else (that’s not Tsumugi’s own testimony, I’ll get to her in a bit). That’s pretty much the entire game chucked out.

Except...

a. Prologue:

Kaede refers to herself as Kaede Akamatsu. Shuichi, likewise, refers to himself as Shuichi Saihara.

Obviously, given what we’re told by the game about Rantaro, he’s the only one who seems to know what’s going on, that it’s a Killing Game. An interesting point is that he asks ‘who is behind all this’, either suggesting that the 52nd game was drastically different, or that his Killing Game was under much different circumstances than we’ve been led to believe.

The personalities aren’t all that drastically different. Miu is still foul mouthed, for example.

Kaede trues several times to ask the Monokubs something, ‘If you guys are the Monokubs, then-‘, presumably asking where Monokuma is. Her sprite while she says this is her shocked one, with sweat on her face and mouth slightly open. It’s not really the face of someone who voluntarily joined up. Neither is how her and Shuichi claim to have gotten there, before the first Flashback Light - being thrown into a car by weird men.

This is followed up by the Monokubs changing the topic to Ultimate Talents, which Kaede responds that she has a skill she has a skill she devotes herself to, but that she wouldn’t call it an Ultimate Talent. This is said while her sprite is in the ‘crossing arms and looking down’ pose, looking rather crestfallen or concerned. It’s a bit of a stretch, but I’m going to say that this interaction implies that Ultimate Talents exist in this world.

Monotaro gives the game away by saying ‘See, according to the backstory, there’s this Ultimate Hunt goin’ on.’ I’m half tempted to ignore everything the Monokubs and Monokuma say, considering I’m not sure how much of it is regular Danganronpa 4th wall breaking and how much is meant to be hints at Tsumugi’s claims at the end. He does say something interesting, claiming that ‘The first thing we need you guys to do is remember your true selves’. Monophanie backs this up by saying ‘need to reclaim your sealed talents’. Both of these could be for the fictional audience’s benefit, if we take what Tsumugi says at face value.

Kaede’s reaction to Monokid saying there’s going to be a killing game is a shocked sprite, and, in her thoughts ‘K-Killing Game...?’. Again, not really the actions of someone who signed up for a Killing Game willing.

This is everything usable in the prologue, as far as I’m aware.

b. Chapter Six Trial

There’s no reason for there to be so many discrepancies between the characters’ memories and the canon events of the first two games. Tsumugi is portrayed as some uber fan, why would she settle for less than perfect? The justification that Tsumugi gives is flimsy at best.

Tsumugi, as Makoto Naegi, says ‘If what I said is the truth, then Hope’s Peak Acaemy was...’ when Shuichi brings up the Cospox. Notice the ‘If’.

The places seen when Tsumugi as Chiaki claims that everyone is a huge DanganRonpa fan are - Japan, Australia, England, America and one other place I can’t identify.

When it’s revealed that it’s the 53rd season, the white V changes to a pink 5. Pink is used in DanganRonpa to symbolise lies (and blood, but it’s the wrong shade of pink for that)

What’s the in game justification for the NDRV3 cast not having any memories of the other games? Or Tsumugi not cosplaying as characters from the other games? (Other than the obvious real world justification that those games don’t exist)

I find it odd that Tsumugi as various characters keeps saying ‘DanganRonpa inspired’.

Gonna point out that they made a kid into a robot. Just gonna throw that out there. This has nothing to do with it I just think it’s fucked up that within a matter of second they took a normal teenager and made him into a walking talking surveillance robot.

Shuichi’s supposed audition video. The Shuichi in this claims that he’s a huge fan of DanganRonpa and has always wanted to be in one. Shuichi in chapter one does not recognise Rantaro, a previous contestant, or the Monokubs. He always reacts with fear and shock in the prologue, contrary to how he acts in the audition video.

Right after the wardrobe change. The change here is that there’s an extra bit after Kaede says ‘K-Killing Game?’, where Shuichi says ‘You mean... we were selected!?’ With the happiest expression on his face. This is not shown in the prologue, obviously. I’m doubting that this actually happened, and that it’s not just another trick by Tsumugi to bring them further into despair.

‘Well, if you’re going to call fiction a lie... Then yes’ this line stands out to me for reasons I can’t explain right now.

Kaede’s audition tape. She says she has no faith in humanity, and yet in the prologue worries over Shuichi and acts in ways one who has no faith in humanity wouldn’t really act.

Kaito’s audition tape. Yeah, no, guy didn’t come off like that at all. I think you get the drill.

c. Tsumugi

Cospox. This is what she uses to justify how she can cosplay as Junko Enoshima while the everyone still thinks she’s real, by claiming that Junko (and the cast of DR and SDR2) are fictional in the world of NDRV3. Problem: She can’t cosplay as Kaede, someone she herself claims to see as fictional. This could mean either that the cospox itself is a lie, or that Kaede isn’t ‘fictional’.

She never claims her own talent was imparted onto her with the Flashback Lights

Interestingly enough, when giving her certain gifts (the prop carrying case is one) her eyes with swirl, like she’s under the effects of Despair. This also happens during the trial, and a few other times during her FTEs. AS far as I’m aware, she’s the only character in NDRV3 who does this.

In her third FTE, she says ‘This is the ‘Cosplay is Fun’ episode’.

The ‘cosplaycat criminal’ line that gets Shuichi thinking that Junko Enoshima and Hope’s Peak is actually real.

Tsumugi says that she’s been working for 53 seasons on the show. Assuming you have a murder once a week like we see in all three DanganRonpa games, and have 16 victims, that’s 14 weeks of murder as it goes until there are two students left. So 14 weeks x 53 = 742 weeks or 14 years, 2 months and 3 weeks of murder. This also means Tsumugi is at minimum in her 30s. This is assuming that she’s telling the truth, of course.

d. Misc

Maybe a bit of a stretch, but the D.I.C.E logo and the Future Foundation logo look similar.

Why is the History of Hope’s Peak Academy book even here, let alone in Kokichi’s lab? All it does is reveal all of the inconsistencies in Tsumugi’s fake memories.

Actually, the labs in general are a bit odd. All of them are really stereotypical, it reminds me of when I’m designing a house in the Sims for a character who’s athletic so there’s just sports equipment everywhere.

So my theory is as thus:

NDRV3 doesn’t take place in a world where everyone is obsessed with DanganRonpa and watches Killing Games all day. It takes place in the regular old DanganRonpa universe (possibly where people watch Killing Games), some time after the events of DR3.

Tsumugi is a part of the Remnants of Despair. I’m guessing that either a) They are actually putting on a Killing Game reality show so they can watch people slip into despair then climb into hope then slip into despair again (this could be part of why previous survivors carry over) or b) something else, like studying Ultimate Talents in a slightly more gory way than Hope’s Peak was.

Tsumugi being part of the Remnants of Despair would also explain why the memories are imperfect. She worships Junko, she’s obviously going to play up her actions and downplay the actions of everyone else, it’s a classic propaganda move, and everyone who could have told them about the inner workings of Hope’s Peak Academy is no longer part of the Remnants of Despair.

I’m also going to toss out there that Team DGR might be another name for the Remnants of Despair. This isn’t based on anything, other than their running of Killing Games and it’s the organisation Tsumugi is a part of.

All of this is speculation and quite a bit of reaching, but I had fun doing it and not the pressing assessment that’s due today so that’s all that matters, right? I might update this post from time to time.

ndrv3: Chapter 1 Thoughts

Thoughts on Chapter 1 below! It’s pretty long, but the tldr version is that I loved it and can’t wait to get through the rest of the game, now that I don’t think I know anymore major spoilers!

...This game just started out swinging, huh. I adored every bit of this chapter, and honestly wished that I hadn’t been spoiled on who the killer was. Well, I knew that Kaede died during this chapter so Shuuichi could take her place, and since she wasn’t the victim of this chapter, she was most likely the killer. I’ll get back to that when I talk about the trial itself a little later.

That escape mini game was torture though; it controlled like an ice level, and we all know how fun those are. It worked for the narrative though, so I don’t have any real problems with it. But your classmates running into traps even when you’re not controlling them was hilarious. It was also cute how feeble Kiibo was when he tried to pick up the manhole; thankfully though my boi Gonta was so stronk.

One of the references that really stood out to me was when Tsumugi referenced Xenoblade Chronicles X when discussing the drone Miu had made (“If it was a Prone, it’d team up with the rest of the Ganglion alliance to destroy humanity.”). I did a double-take when that happened; I absolutely adore X (even though I still have yet to finish it, lol), but no one talks about it anymore, so it made me really happy to see it mentioned here. Also on the topic of Tsumugi, Kaede’s reaction after she saw Tsumugi’s “cospox” and they returned to the library was hilarious. Monokid tripping balls throughout the majority of the chapter was also pretty funny too.

Now on to the killing game; Rantarou we hardly knew ye’. Honestly, though, it was probably best for him to go so the mystery could stay alive, because even after the Monocubs tampered with the students’ memories in the prologue, he still had some vague memories about the “Ultimate Hunt” that none of the other students remembered. In my predictions I thought he might stick around longer, but seeing how the game is playing out, I’m fine with him dying here, although I would have liked to hear more of his voice (my appeal for him shot up when I heard his voice in the demo; I’m a simple person lol). I just wonder how his ultimate will be revealed; will he still get an Ultimate Lab revealed later in the game, which would reveal his ultimate, or will it not be built since he’s dead? I’m just wondering whether the reveal will be game-changing, or if it will be more like the Twogami reveal where it was kinda lowkey.

But boy was this trial crazy; them suspecting Gonta at the beginning was clearly a red-herring, because it was way too easy to figure out how that would have been accomplished. Even in other trials where it was easy to figure out who committed the murder, for example, in Chapter 4 of sdr2 where you can easily determine who killed Mechamaru at the very beginning of the investigation if you paid attention to the room details, it was much more difficult to determine how the murder was committed. As an aside, realizing who it was that early on during the investigation was such a fucking downer; the whole time I was just dreading seeing Gundam’s execution.

Because I knew that it was most likely Kaede who did it, and once the picture’s revealed that no one else had entered the library before Rantarou’s death, I pretty much figured out how she did it with the vent. I don’t know if I would have come to that conclusion without knowing that she was the likely killer, but I focused on the vent a lot throughout the investigation, since the game brought it up a lot. Granted, I didn’t have all the details figured out, but when she started cleaning in the room, I was pretty suspicious of her.

But... I’m sad to see her go; she was so assertive and fun. At the very least, she went out with one of the greatest executions, much better than the ones in sdr2, at least. I also really liked her relationship with Shuuichi; it was more sweet and heartfelt than I expected, and it made me like Shuuichi a lot more than I did during the demo.

Sorry for the rambling; I had a lot of thoughts and feelings about this chapter lol. If anyone wants to discuss anything more with me, send me an ask or a message! i actually did quite a lot today, the whole chapter four trial and a chunk of chapter five, so i’m gonna split these into two posts, with trial four and chapter five exploration screenshots going first

i had the text on auto and managed to just barely miss getting the screenshot in time so that’s why it’s in the log instead... i was thinking it was appropriate too

last trial it was seesaws, now slides?? what playground structure will the next murder get compared to..?

sometimes the english translation is good (though monokuma was definitely referencing sonic in the japanese as well)

they don’t overdo the harry potter references with her, which is for the best

can’t wait to watch this with the english dub to hear saihara say “patsy”

after monokid died i was just waiting for the rest of them to... it took four chapters but now we’re finally back to monokuma by himself

this is honestly the most despicable thing he’s said, and also what prompted the “i hate ouma, he’s the worst, he’s my second favorite character (in this game)” post i did earlier

okay kiibo i get you have some hang ups about being treated as a machine and not a person (which like, fair) but this is maybe not the wisest way to test that

y-yeah, qualify it with that (the animation of kiibo rolling out was funny though)

i was so glad you got a room to investigate stuff in with kiibo because i’m pretty sure this is the first time this has happened in the game and kiibo and saihara talking is always very good, i’ll have some of his free time stuff in the next post

which, speaking of, since this one is a little long now i’ll cut it off here

Danganronpa V3 Liveblog Part 4 [Chapter 1 - Trial]

OK I think this might be shaping up to be my favourite game in the series, wow.

I’m just gonna immediately put up a read-more so I can get into spoilers right away.

OK first of all I genuinely was not expecting Kaede to be the culprit until they spelled it out. It honestly never crossed my mind. Which I feel really stupid about because I remember that around when we first saw her in promo materials, and we found out that she was the protagonist, I had a feeling that she might be a decoy protagonist of sorts. But I completely forgot about that idea until now, so I never considered her to be a suspect.

I wonder how many people guessed it earlier on, though. There’s definitely parts that could have tripped alarms for people right away. I feel a little stupid for not noticing the lines referencing her picking up and dropping the shot put ball. I even remember taking note of her Rube Goldberg comment, which I think I mentioned in my last post, but I just thought it was a hint toward someone ELSE setting up a trap to kill Rantarou. The slope of books also feels super obvious in hindsight. But I never gave it much thought. I’d almost like to say that it was hinted at too much, but given that I didn’t figure it out, I don’t have much room to stand on.

Even the motive makes sense, especially her refusal to use the First Blood Perk. I guess it’s a little flimsy, but I get that she didn’t want to just leave everyone behind in the killing game. Though her motive is a lot stronger with the part about her not wanting to be known as a criminal being taken into account. I guess it’s a bit of a selfish motive, but it’s realistic. She just wanted to expose the mastermind and have that be the end of it all.

Part of why I was thrown off and didn’t suspect Kaede was because I thought Shuichi really was the culprit, at least once they started pointing fingers at him. As I said last time, he was my main suspect, for the most part. So I guess I just got tricked by the game’s misdirection. But honestly the trial does a really great job of making it seem like Shuichi really was the culprit. Especially with the point about the camera intervals. In the end it technically had nothing to do with the crime, but when it got revealed, it definitely felt like the last hint toward Shuichi. I was almost ready to criticize the game for withholding vital information until the trial itself, but I guess I’m revoking that complaint.

I feel a little dumb for how I never guessed that Shuichi was keeping quiet because he was afraid of the idea of suspecting Kaede, even though they really signaled in advance that he had major issues with that sort of thing. I was kinda prepared for him to, like, start maniacally laughing or something. Maybe I was subconsciously getting hung up on comparing this game to DR2, and expecting a more Komaeda-esque twist. Ironically, this twist WAS pretty Komaeda-y, technically, but I was expecting something more Case 1 Komaeda-y than Case 5 Komaeda-y, to put it simply. It doesn’t help that I’d seen someone say that this chapter was just as good as DR2 Chapter 5, so the general comparison was stuck in my head.

It’s thankfully not some sort of direct copy of that game. Technically the motive and the Rube Goldberg-y nature of the crime are similar, but they play out pretty differently. And honestly I just wasn’t expecting a case like this to be the very first one in the entire game.

Honestly I think my only real complaint is that it’s a bit lame that the first female protagonist we got [for the mainline games] immediately gets killed off to set up a male one, but it was executed so well overall that it’s hard to complain too much.

The trial itself, including the gameplay, was surprisingly stressful, since it’s the first time I’ve actually played one of these games hands-on, so I think that might have been why I didn’t really consider certain alternate possibilities. It wasn’t super difficult, but it still kept me on my toes and made it hard to think.

Though even if the gameplay element of the trial wasn’t that bad since it was tutorial-y, the overall story of the trial [so to say] was way more complex than I expected. I kinda thought this would feel more like, well, a tutorial case, and have a really simple answer. I guess another player might have immediately noticed the hints and seen it as being obvious, but I didn’t. I wasn’t expecting this big of a trip right away. I almost feel bad for people playing this as their first DR game.

Most of the trial went over stuff I’d already speculated about, and thankfully confirmed that throwing the shot put ball into the room wouldn’t have worked because the bookcase was in the way, but it still went down certain routes that I wasn’t expecting. Like, for some reason I never pegged Miu as a suspect, even though she literally helped design the equipment related to the murder. I had a minute or two of being shocked, and genuinely thinking she might have been the killer. Especially when I considered that maybe her ‘tinkering with a gadget’ in the dining room was her using a remote control to use her drone to drop the ball on Rantarou’s head.

I couldn’t help but feel really bad for Gonta during the first part of the trial. He’s just a sweet precious boy trying his best to be a gentleman, and everyone immediately starts suspecting him of murder. Not that I can blame them much, since he was in a pretty suspicious spot.

By the way, even though Kokichi is clearly gonna remain a pretty pivotal part of the group dynamic, boy do I just wanna punch him in the face. I get what he’s doing, but he does it in the most obnoxious way possible. Also if he could just never, ever again for the rest of time, ever make that one goddamn terrifying facial expression, that’d be wonderful. That genuinely freaked me out.

In general this whole trial put me through a goddamn rollercoaster of confusion and stress. Wow.

I actually really like that Kaede wasn’t evil or anything, and genuinely wanted to help everyone, but also had understandable reasons to lie about it all. It’s a bit better than the culprit ‘just being crazy’.

Also on the note of Kaede, what was up with her cross-eyed expression she made sometimes after she got caught? That was weird.

It was also kinda surprising to see Monokid get killed during Kaede’s execution. I wonder if that’ll keep happening in each chapter until none of them are left. Who knows.

And on that note as well, Kaede’s execution was pretty fucked up, in true DR spirit.

All in all, that was a really incredible first chapter, in ways that I was not at all expecting. This game really brought out the big guns right from the get-go.

The scene at the end in the music lab really kinda got to me. It makes me wonder if we’ll see Shuichi’s lab soon.

Now I have no real idea what will happen next, other than that I guess Shuichi is going to be the new protagonist.

Which makes me wonder how the friendship fragment system works. Was it effectively a waste that I did an event with Shuichi in this chapter? Will it give me anything, or will it effectively just go away? [Don’t answer that question. I’ll find out soon enough]

I already felt that it was kinda pointless to guess who might survive this game, but now it feels even more pointless, if they’re willing to kill off the protagonist. Now nobody’s safe.
