The Skin I Live In
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pedro Almodovar has said his THE SKIN I LIVE IN (2011, Netflix disc, On Demand) is influenced by Georges Franju’s EYES WITHOUT A FACE (1960) and Fritz Lang’s thrillers. I think it also has a very Hitchcockian air, with its focus on obsession and hidden motives relating it to Almodovar’s other more serious thrillers like BAD EDUCATION (2004) and BROKEN EMBRACES (2009). Those who prefer his earlier work may be disappointed that there’s none of the delirious camp humor of WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESERVE THIS? (1984) or WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF AN NERVOUS BREAKDOWN (1988), but after a slow start, it becomes almost compulsively watchable. It seems at first about a plastic surgeon (Antonio Banderas) holding a patient (Elena Anaya) hostage as he experiments on her. Before long, however, it turns into a complex rape-revenge tale with a decidedly queer slant. Banderas is restrained, almost constricted, as the surgeon on a mission, but he has the talent to direct his energy into his eyes and the smallest gestures. He takes the star’s tendency to hold something back and uses it to enhance his characterization. He’s matched by Anaya’s wide-eyed, seeming innocence and a great character turn by Almodovar regular Marisa Paredes as the housekeeper with a secret. She seems Mrs. Danvers at first but eventually emerges as Hannah Cord (from the PEYTON PLACE TV series). Alberto Iglesias’ score adds to the Hitchcockian feel as Almodovar’s camera (under Jose Luis Alcaine) glides through the doctor’s chic villa. This is not a film for everyone. There are two rapes presented rather brutally, but more than that, Almodovar has a way of making you question your own responses to his work. He sucks you into worlds you never thought or necessarily wanted to inhabit and makes you like it in spite of yourself.

Multimedia Blog 1
Mr. Iglesias is a Netflix sitcom starring comedian Gabriel Iglesias. The series revolves around a history teacher, Mr. Iglesias, who ends up teaching students because they are doing poorly and saves them from being kicked out by the Assistant Principal. The show touches on effective themes and development that build towards the academic decathlon to test the work done by Mr. Iglesias at the end of the school year.
Tumblr media
The show encompasses the topic of multiculturalism in schools in episode 6 titled “Bullying”. In the beginning of the episode, the school passes out brochures and encourages the students to use more inclusive language regarding gender, orientation, abilities, nationality, and ethnicity. Marisol, one of Mr. Iglesias' students, points out that the brochure indicated the wrong term for the Latinx Community, calling them “latinos”. She informs that “Too many cultures have used the masculine term to refer to all people.” This scene was very significant because it tackles the theme of racial, linguistic, and cultural tension. Marisol acts like a mirror for Mr. Iglesias, showing him that reception is important as intention, and that language is subject to change. This is very similar to how the youth helped Judy Baca redefine the intersection of art and activism, she would allow the youth to participate in the creation of the murals, giving them a voice. The scene also explains the adaptation of the term “latinx”. The term “latinx” was emerged from the Spanish-speaking queer community in order to challenge the gender binary and make it more inclusive for those who do not want to be identified by a gender.

The scene also connects with Susan Saulny’s article “Black? White? Asian? More Americans Choose All of the Above '', in the article, Saulny addresses that multiracial people were forced to identify as one race or another. In the same episode, Mr. Iglesias explains that he had a similar problem when he was younger on how he should identify. He states when he was born, on his birth certificate, there were only two options to describe what he was: either Afro-American or Caucasian. Then there was a third box named “other”. This mirrors a very similar topic with what Saulny was addressing in the article, the lack of full racial identification.
The Netflix sitcom, Mr. Iglesias was eye opening by how subtly, yet overtly political the show can be. By reflecting on themes such as multiculturalism in schools and racial identification, the show highlights the harsh realities of various communities.

Netflix
Emily in Paris ; Sympa.
Cinderella and the 4 knight ; Pas du tout accroché.

Media Selection #3 Mr. Iglesias
For my third media selection, I chose the Netflix original Series, Mr. Iglesias.
Mr. Iglesias follows a high school history teacher whose misfit students are on the brink of being sent to different schools to improve the school’s academic performance ranking. Mr. Iglesias’s students are mostly people of color and come from different working classes. One of his student’s named Marisol is a Latina and is a very intelligent student but struggles in class due to having to work 3 different jobs to support her and her family. Another student, Lorenzo, is African American and struggles with social anxiety. These students struggle with their academics due to factors outside of the material being given to them.
The subject of the show is that having a teacher that believes in their students and works to help them overcome the obstacles outside of class can transform at risk students into academic scholars. The show relates to our class’s discussion about people of color and education. The show also discusses the use of the term Latinx, a term used to describe people of Latin descent. The term was created to give a gender-neutral term to use instead of Latino or Latina when referring to Hispanic heritage.
In the show, the students complain to Mr. Iglesias about the unfair advantage the kids in honors have over them in the school’s academic decathlon. They note that while they only have paper textbooks and notebooks, the honor students each have their own laptop and private tutor to help them with their education. This reminded me about reading about Native Americans from our semester. From the readings from week six, we learned about how Native American communities faced similar disadvantages when it came to technology and education. From the Antonio Lopez article, “Circling the Cross” we learn about how Native American schools rarely get digital technologies such as iPads and laptops and the schools that do get those devices don’t have the resources or knowledge on how to properly use the technology. (Lopez) The disadvantages that people of color face when it comes to education is important because without a proper education, society is unable to advance.
