Call of Duty Modern Warfare Overview
Are you new to Call of Duty? Don't know where to start? I've got some videos for you! Here's a great way to get to know the games so far...
Tumblr media
Modern Warfare is a reboot of the original Modern Warfare series from the 2000's. Many of the characters are re-designed, but there's quite a few that are introduced for the first time as well. Here's a video on the original series:
youtube
In addition, Call of Duty released a comic book about the original Ghost. It can be found here (TW for child abuse, torture, gore, psychological abuse, drug abuse, and more. Please read at your discretion)
On to the reboots!
@oleworldblues made a great guide that you can find here, (Which includes the SpecOps missions and the Atomgrad missions) but here's some other videos as well
youtube
This goes over the two campaign stories thus far (MW2019 and MW2022) and provides a great but detailed summary of the gameplay.
However, if you want to watch the actual games, which I highly recommend, you can find MW2019 here and MW2022 here. Honestly, they're really enjoyable because of the absolutely fantastic quality, and the no damage in particular makes for a very realistic gameplay. They also have no commentary, just pure gameplay
Warzone
Warzone is the multiplayer PvP version of Call of Duty where the 141 and their allies (Known as SpecGru) face off against their rival PMC KorTac. While not directly part of the campaign, the season clips are connected to the main storyline. Here's a great video with all of the warzone seas clips:
youtube
(Not included in the above- Shadow siege event)
youtube
Finally: The upcoming game. MWIII
There's been a number of trailer releases thus far:
Makarov reveal: Where we are introduced to the main villain of the game
Teaser Trailer: What we can expect to see in the upcoming game
Gameplay trailer: Footage of actual gameplay
Bonus: Call of Duty Zombies, which will be an addendum to the game and not part of the campaign
Finally: Here's the Call of Duty wiki, which is a great place for general questions about characters, but should not be taken for pure canon as there is sometimes inaccurate information included.
This is not an exhaustive list of everything, but I hope this is helpful in introducing folks to the canon events thus far. For future updates follow the Call of Duty social media on Youtube
Welcome to the fandom, and welcome back for those returning! See you in MWIII!

My Top 5 Ghost and Soap Fanfictions
All are on Ao3
#5: Seasons - StinglessWasp
This fanfiction brought my love for Call of Duty out of hibernation. This author perfects writing Ghost and all his quirks but also how he is genuinely a good person who's trying despite his past. I absolutely loved the characterization.
#4: The Wind Will Howl Your Name - Minimelo
I absolutely adore this beautifully written, sweet, heart wrenching story. This author nails writing about the yearning for someone else. Also, this is one of the only Alternate Universe fanfictions I really enjoy. It doesn't waste time trying to build too much unnecessary detail in the world, but instead uses the different setting to complement Simon and Johnny's character and how they grow together. If that makes any sense at all.
#3: in lieu of the bells - headlocket
When I found out headlocket added a bonus chapter to all that's said in the low light I about cried. This is the perfect way to wrap up the best story I have ever read. I thought my heart was going to die from how special this ending was. It's perfect in every way.
#2: let these hills absolve me - flowersferns
This is by far the best Ghost and Soap fanfiction set in Ghost's point of view. I loved every minute of reading his internal monologue, with all of his overthinking. The setting was perfect. I loved being able to visualize this wonderful sheep farm in the middle of the mountains. A setting I think both of the boys deserve. I reread this a couple times and it hits me even harder every time. Just a masterpiece. This is actually what happens at the end of MWIII.
#1: all that’s said in the low light - headlocket
How do I even start? This is not a fanfiction. This is a work of art. Never have I read something that made me cry as much as this story did. I was not expecting so much symbolism and attention to detail in a fanfiction. The way something barely mentioned in one chapter will have a much deeper meaning as the story progresses is just incredible. Never have I cared so much for original characters and their relationships with Johnny and Simon. I will never recover from that poem Johnny wrote in chapter 12. Perfect. All of it is perfect.

Ghoap Analysis/Meta (1?)
The Evolution of GhostSoap Redux
Tumblr media
Continuing thoughts on how Ghost and Soap's relationship has changed over the course of mw(19), mwii(22) and mwiii(23)
Spread out amongst several posts. This will be long 😅
(Part 1)
BEWARE SPOILERS TO MWIII(23) !
I've had time to settle my thoughts on Ghostsoap in mwiii (23) and this will go more into depth of the re-contextualising of Ghost and Soap's relationship in mwii (22) from the verdansk mission: "Flashpoint".
Flashpoint is set 4 years to mwiii(23). The game places it as April 6, 2019. This is important to us because it sets a different potential first mission (meet cute lmao) between the two and thus changes the tone of their interactions in mwii (22)
So let's set up a timeline with the available dates. Thankfully, the game sets some very concrete dates for us. Not all missions are included.*
2019
Flashpoint - April 06, 2019
First canonical appearance of SAS Ghost and Soap
Ghost provides sniper cover for Soap
Price/Soap capture Makarov and transport him to a helo with Ghost and Shepherd
There's a failed interrogation by Ghost and Soap.
Makarov implies he has met Ghost before and thought him dead at an airport
2019 Mw(19)
Piccadilly - Oct 25, 2019
First canonical appearance of SAS Gaz
Gaz is attached to Met Counter Terrorist Police. This implies he has worked largely in his career in conjunction to the Police. It's unknown whether he met Soap or Ghost before.
First meet of Gaz and Price to combat terrorists in London
Old Comrades - Oct 31, 2019
Gaz meets Nikolai
Interrogation scene. Arguably strengthens Gaz and Price's relationship
Into the Furnace - Nov 03, 2019
Last mission, they kill general barkov
Credit Scene - Nov 03-04, 2019* (hypothetical)
Laswell and Price form task force 141
Price seconds Ghost, Soap, Gaz. This implies that Price has worked with Soap and Ghost on missions for x amount of years. It's Gaz who was the surprise recruit.
2020 Cod Warzone
Season 2 - Mar 2020
First appearance of 141 Ghost
Unknown amount of 141 stationed in Verdansk. Ghost asks for backup.
Season 3 - Apr 2020
Armistice dissolved
Price and Gaz show up to help Ghost
Implied- unknown amount of 141 to Verdansk (possible meeting of Soap and Ghost)
Season ? - Dec 2020
Price kills Zakaev
First appearance (via call) of 141 Soap asking for backup in Verdansk
Price, Ghost, Gaz, Farah etc backup Soap who is somewhere else in Verdansk getting pinned down by enemies
2022 Mwii(22)
Strike - July 15, 2022
Ghost calls an airstrike on Ghorbrani with the aid of Shadow Company
Hindsight - Aug 12, 2022
Shepherd/Shadow Company loses American missiles to terroists
Kill or Capture - Oct 28, 2022
Ghost gets assigned Soap as his sergeant for Al Mazhrah mission to kill or capture Hassan
They find American missiles instead
Cartel Protection - Oct 30, 2022
Ghost/Soap meet Ale/Rudy in Las Almas
They fight the Mexican army under control of the cartels
RV with Graves/Shadow Comp.
El Sin Nombre - Nov 01, 2022
Soap infils cartel mansion
Valeria is revealed as El Sin Nombre
They take her into custody
Dark Water - Nov 02, 2022
Boat/oil rig mission with Shadow company
Missile launch averted by Ghost, Soap and Graves
Alone - Nov 03, 2022
Graves and Shepherd betray 141/mexi bros
Ghost and Soap get out of Las Almas
RV at ale's hideout with Rudy
Prison Break - Nov 03, 2022
Ghost, Soap, Rudy break out ale from prison
Meet up with Price/Gaz
Ghost Team - Nov 03, 2022
141 with mexi bros take back mexi bros base
Soap and Rudy "kill" Graves
Countdown - Nov 04, 2022
Stop missile launch in Chicago
Ghost and Soap kill Hassan
2023 Mwiii (23)
Operation 627 - Oct 13, 2023
Makarov breaks out of prison
Reactor - Nov 10, 2023
141 find out that Makarov escaped
141 assaults konni base
Price finds chemical weapons (almost died)
Payload - Nov 11, 2023
141 split up to stop missile launch of chemical weapons
They fail to stop 2 missiles to Russia
Oligarch - Nov 12, 2023
Ghost/Soap island mission to find Makarov's financier
Interrogation of Milena for Makarov's location
Frozen Tundra - Nov 14, 2023
141 ambush konni convoy
Find Shepherd was Makarov's prisoner
Interrogate him on Makarov's location
Gora Dam - Nov 16, 2023
Ghost/Soap split up to stop chemical weapons in Verdansk
Trojan Horse - Nov 21, 2023
141 split up in London tunnels to stop Makarov from using chemical weapons in subway system
So now that's done. I've mostly ignored Farah and Alex and focused on Price, Ghost, Gaz, Soap and Nikolai as it pertains to relationships within the core group of Price/Ghost/Gaz/Soap.
What can we make of this ?
Well, a couple things.
We can now say that from 2019 to the events of "Kill or Capture" in 2022, Ghost and Soap have most likely worked together on missions before. The timeline shows that they at least had to have met in Dec 2020 in Verdansk as Soap had called for backup to Price and group.
That makes it actually at least 3 years of knowledge of each other prior to mwii(22). So a total of 4 years + potentially at the start of mwiii(23).
It also shows us how quickly their relationship changed from the Alone mission in '22 despite the 3 years of prior knowledge they had since '19.
Let it be said that it took 1 week, ONLY 7 DAYS!! to change Ghost and Soap's relationship. 7 days out of a total at least 3 years total.
Ghost started at not even bothering to name Soap in 2019, to presumably basic Soap/Mactavish/sergeant for the next 3 years.
Cut to the events in mwii(22). Lets say beginning at "Kill or Capture" and finishing at "Alone" and suddenly Ghost ends up having made up his own personal nickname that no one else can use for Soap in just those 7 days.
I posit that this was in part due to "Kill or Capture" in '22 being the first mission that Soap has directly worked under Ghost's command.
This is all hypotheticals and guesswork so take it as you may.
Assuming Ghost was mainly a solo mission sort of guy, let's also assume he mostly helped as sniper overwatch if he ever had team missions (like in Flashpoint). Most 141 missions have him taking that position as well, so it's safe to say he is support most of the time.
Given that assumption, it's also likely that Soap and Ghost had to have interacted mainly on comms and any physical meeting would be restricted to transport via heli or otherwise.
It's possible Soap and Ghost have worked together on a more physical basis (aka Ghost leading Soap on a squad), but given how much Ghost seemed to be testing Soap in "Kill or Capture" I find that somewhat unlikely.
In 2019 we see how brusque Ghost is with Soap. It's very likely that Ghost was largely monosyllabic with Soap pre or post missions to Flashpoint.
Considering Soap's propensity to chatter in 2022 and 2023, it's also very likely Soap annoyed the hell out of Ghost on comms. Lol.
This could explain why Ghost was so dismissive of having Soap as his sergeant in "Kill or Capture", despite working together 3 years ago.
I, and arguably most of fandom had theorised that "Kill or Capture" was the first mission that Soap and Ghost ever had together. And we weren't quite right, but we weren't completely wrong either.
With Flashpoint, it's obvious now that was not quite true. It even suggests in it that Ghost and Soap had worked together prior to even that, as there was no formal introduction between the two.
This dramatically changes how Ghost's dialogue and Soap's to a lesser degree can be read in mwii(22) and implies much much more if you consider how they interact with each other in '23.
So why does it matter when Ghost and Soap's relationship started?
With mwiii(23) we can now definitively tell when Ghost and Soap's relationship changed. We now have a rough basis of a timeline and we can track down the differences between '19 -'22 and then '22- '23. Its important because we can see how their relationship deepens and how it changed within a span of 3 years, 7 compelling days and 1 heartwrenching year later.
For all that mwiii(23) was lax with explicit Ghostsoap moments, it's rich in how much context we gain to their relationship. We see how Ghost changes and how his relationships differ between 141. It's an interesting and compelling look at both Ghost and Soap's characters.
In this discussion I separate this analysis into 3 parts. Part 2 will cover the implications of "Flashpoint" on mwii (22), with discussion line by line. Part 3 will most likely go over comparisons a year makes from the events in '22 to '23. (This might be subject to change as I get further into the analysis)
Onto Part 2.

Hi! I think your art is awesome and you are super cool!!!!! I was really confused about something so I thought I would ask you because why not! I’ve only played the old MW2 (recently), and I’m confused on how the seasons for the new MW2 work (alas, I haven’t played it yet). I heard about how in every season there is a story that corresponds to that season. Are those stories canon??? Do they add onto the campaign story???? Or are they just kinda standalone things??? I’m really confused about it 😅
Thank you in advance for helping me out here!!!! Btw Jade is so cool!!! I love her and Ghost’s dynamic 🥹 your comics are so goofy and I love your Roach design 💪
Hello Anon! and thank you (❁´◡`❁)
Well, to keep it simple, the multiplayer season stories (usually in a form of cutscenes) are the things that continue the campaign story. The seasonal cutscenes are released every season and used by the developers to transition us to the next CoD games.
-> Are they canon? Yes they are.
-> Do they matter? Some of them are, some of them don't. Some cutscenes are used to just introduce new operators to play in the multiplayer, some can be a story filler. Like in the Season 2 of MW19, Ghost was introduced as an operator. In the Season 3 of MW19, Alex (who we thought was dead) was introduced as an operator. Oh, it turns out Ghost knew Alex, cool!
In Season 5, Lerch and Roze was introduced as new operators for the multiplayer. Do they matter much to the story? No. But they are Shadow Company, and that matters. (also works as a teaser that in the reboot timeline, Shadow Company does exist, and Graves is later introduced in MWII.)
In MWII, there are Atomgrad Raid missions where we play as Price, Gaz, Farah, and Alex -> We met Hadir who's been missing since 2019, and by the end, he's dead. So is Hadir canonically dead? Yes. In Season 3, the cutscene shows that Valeria broke out of prison. So she's not imprisoned anymore now? Yes. Season 5, we met Graves! But he was dead in the campaign! Well turns out he was never in the tank. So he is alive now? Yep.
-> Basically later in MWIII, the seasons just tells us that something has changed since MWII -> Hadir's dead, Valeria is free, Graves is alive and currently allies with Farah, and Shepherd is still on the run.
Do I have to know all this shit going into MWIII???? Not really. But it does fill some gaps.
Hope that answers your question! ( •̀ .̫ •́ )✧

So i was going back an forth with this one dude on ig because he claimed he read some "source" on twitter that said there will not be mw4 or anything and he was sooo persistent i even like sent him the link to the entire interview that actually confirms reboot will extend beyond 3 but he was like nahh it just says story will continue characters arcs but probably not mw4??? And im like are u fr? 💀 How can they continue character stories but not in mw like how dumb can cod fanboys get i swear
Anyway sorry for the rant
No need to be sorry :D In my opinion they could easily extend the MW series, there's a limit tho. Some might think there will be no more MW4+ because the OG had 3 'nd they're basicly saying Reboot MW will also only have three. A new MW game also means a new (season) multiplayer, normally. And i'm sure they're gonna release other/new titles in the coming years. Also kinda depends if they're gonna bring out a (new) title every year, or every 2 years(maybe longer??). So with all these promising stories (if they're really gonna pull through on expanding the MW characters arc. *PLEAASE*) Will they be making a campaign only game? DLC's? Campaign+Multiplayer? Cause they can cover ALOT of ground over the course of years.. but is the fandom still as hyped 2-5 years from now, and how much profit is enough to keep it rolling to Activision? So i'm curious how CoD devs gonna plan this out. I'm curious to that source of his, cause Twitter never lies ..🤭 He might think the MW arc stories could be seperate games (dlc's etc) and won't continue under a new MW title.. or something. Whilst the characters MAKE MW what it is (to us*me* campaign-semi multiplayer players) So why CoD couldn't continue the MW series after the 3rd, hmm? Yeah kinda sounds dumdum to me
ALSOALSO didn't Makarov said in that new voice clip(?) that it's only the beginning-ish? So aka MWIII part 1 :3

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III Review - Not-So-Special Ops - Game Informer
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-iii-review-not-so-special-ops-game-informer/
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III Review - Not-So-Special Ops - Game Informer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Call of Duty cycles through its lineup of villains on a yearly basis. Sometimes it’s Nazis, other times it’s Russian nationalists or zombies. But the most dangerous threat is one without a lust for brains or access to weapons of war; it’s stagnation. And while many Call of Duty teams often switch up just enough variables to stave off monotony, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III fully submits to the annual churn.   The campaign embodies this, as it rushes to a conclusion with little care for the details. COD missions usually follow a predictable yet mostly effective formula of packing together various one-off gameplay mechanics through fluctuating levels of intensity. Modern Warfare III cuts out necessary buildup and most of the variety, leading to basic stages riddled with pacing issues. Many max out at around 15 minutes, which means the usual rollercoaster of ups and downs has been stripped down to only include the descents. The spectacles are also less bombastic, and the abbreviated journey to them only further diminishes their appeal.
[embedded content]
Speeding ahead also impedes the storytelling since it barrels through beats at an astonishing clip. How Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II’s antagonist is alive and why they’re now an ally was haphazardly glossed over in a cutscene from a previous multiplayer season. Vital details like that are just more casualties of its hurried pacing.
While much of the campaign poorly emulates what COD has already done, the wider Open Combat missions attempt to take that blueprint into new territory. However, the promise of more agency is undone by how shallow these stages are. Exploring these larger levels is not worthwhile as unlocking new guns is often redundant. Upgrades and weapons also don’t carry forward between missions.
Objectives can be tackled in different ways, but these options don’t go far beyond going loud or sneaking through using rudimentary stealth mechanics. Static mission and map design, limited interactivity, and a lack of meaningful rewards deflate their intended replayability and mean one run is more than enough. Nonlinearity is novel here, but novelty alone is not enough.
MWIII’s multiplayer modes more clearly flex COD’s signature smooth gunplay and impressive sound design, but are not exempt from the malaise that affects the whole experience. Lower score thresholds and more agile movement mean competitive multiplayer matches have a faster tempo that’s still kept in check by the higher time-to-kill. This cadence allows for thrilling firefights, but time spent out of combat is a drag. Earning all the same gear each year is already a tiring process made even more laborious by MWIII’s grindy unlock system and busy menus.
Competitive multiplayer, while familiar, highlights at least many of the series’ strengths, but the Zombies mode can’t even shamble over that low bar. Turning Zombies into an extraction shooter waters down the formula since success now requires multiple matches. The high difficulty means players must repeatedly drop in and acquire better gear before moving forward. The process is slow and tedious and full of uneventful loot runs and, if killed, lost progress.
Zombies feels more like a limited-time Warzone event cobbled together from existing ideas and assets and that sentiment permeates throughout MWIII. Each pillar is an inferior patchwork of past ideas from its stunted campaign to its multiplayer that, while the strongest mode, is comprised of systems lifted wholesale from MWII with maps from 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. This year’s COD is a threadbare expansion masquerading as a sequel and an embarrassing way to mark the series’ 20th anniversary.

Modern Warfare II with Season 6, bridging the gap to MWIII. Stay locked and loaded for fresh content as the game continues to evolve. Given the huge level of complaints that stemmed from Modern Warfare 2's (2022) maps often with how big they were for 6v6 lobbies, some of these maps such as Rust will help players have the fast-paced shooter experience, as opposed to maps that can promote players to remain stationary.
