Here's something very special. I received an extremely early, generous and downright magical Christmas present 🎁
It's a 1989 taishōgoto synthesizer, it is unreal and I'm all kinds of emotional over it 💗

Guess who got a new instrument
Tumblr media
Behold the taishogoto! Also known as the Nagoya Harp. A 5-6-string instrument with every string tuned to a G. Though it sits on one's lap or table like a zither, it's strummed like a guitar. Instead of forming chords with your left hand, the taishogoto is equipped with typewriter-like keys; in this manner, it's a bit like a hurdy-gurdy or a nyckelharpa. This one has come to me with a pick, a tuning whistle, a pretty string-ends cover, a solid case, and two keys for the case latches.
Gifted to me courtesy of mi madre haha she's never given me a sincere apology for her bullshit in my entire life and "compensates" me by buying me stuff when even she notices she's being too much. This occasion happens to be close to our birthdays and also happens to be something I'm actually interested in, so the tide of my general upset has been ebbed, and I think I'll be able to ride this swell of glee for at least until New Year ✧*。٩(๑˙╰╯˙๑)و✧*。

Did a photoshoot this weekend and got some gorgeous photos of my favorite kimono. This is a blue komon covered with hand painted fans. The obi is nagoya obi with a harp and a biwa, tied in ichiju daiko. I'm extremely proud of how this musubi came out! I brought a nice oiled parasol along that day since the weather was uncertain about the rain. It ended up being perfectly overcast all day!

Et Moriemur Take Czech Doom Into New Territory with Fiery 4th Full-Length
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
Artwork by Samantha Dibattista
It's about time doom went for Baroque. Seriously, I haven't heard a harpsichord in doom forever (if ever), but we have the collective imagination of five-strong ET MORIEMUR to thank for the decision here. I feel like I'm in the middle of a Hammer film from the surreal seventies as I audit the latest single from the Czech band's fourth long-play, 'Tamashii No Yama' (2022).
Translating as something like, "Mountain of Soul," the new record explores Japanese place and legend as witnessed through outsiders' eyes. "Nagoya" emits a strange new atmosphere, with the buoyant interjection of arpeggiated keys set against Zdeněk Nevělík's caustic sermon (he is both keyboardist and singer here).
This is lent a sense of proportion (and subtle gravitas) by the presence of monastic voices bringing their uncanny sound into the harmonic whole. It is this sense of the bizarre that works so effectively in Et Moriemur's favor on the follow-up to 2018's Epigrammata (which was an exploration of Greece, reviewed in these pages).
Tumblr media
At a meager three-and-a-half minutes (hey, we're talking doom here!), "Nagoya" (perhaps named after the city 那古野) is actually a kind of microcosm of the album's soul, which summons disperate and seemingly unrelated instrumentation, channeling them for doom's grander purposes.
Keep your ears perked for Et Moriemur's new LP, 'Tamashi No Yama' (2022), blossoming to life just in time for Spring, on April 8th via Transcending Obscurity Records (pre-order here). Today, Doomed & Stoned takes on the album's fifth track and intriguing third single.
Give ear...
LISTEN: Et Moriemur - Nagoya
SOME BUZZ
Czech doom metal band Et Moriemur set new standards for themselves with their previous Greek-themed album 'Epigrammata' which borrowed elements of death and black metal and flawlessly integrated them in their unique brand of atmospheric doom metal. This time they're exploring Japanese themes and have frankly outdone themselves.
It's rare to come across bands that are constantly reinventing themselves without losing their core sound and Et Moriemur are doing just that and taking the sound ahead in ways previously unimagined. An album to be heard from start to finish, it makes you experience various moods and sounds, having employed the services of several musicians in addition to their own, playing traditional instruments such as shakuhachi and others like cello, harp, violin and more.
Tamashii No Yama (Atmospheric Doom/Black Metal) by ET MORIEMUR (Czechia)
For the next quarter of an hour, you're transported to a different land, imagining a different era, and you remain mesmerized by the seamlessly transitioning music with plenty of variations and fascinating new elements. The blend of genres is immaculate and none of it feels even remotely forced or out of place. Truly, Et Moriemur may have created a new sound which they've only perfected over here. They remain in a league of their own, in competition with only themselves.
For fans of - Evoken, Sigh, Rotting Christ, My Dying Bride, Septicflesh, Paradise Lost.

Musical Smorgasbord 10/23/2019 Plastic Factory, Imaike Nagoya, Aichi Photos by Matt Chima Review by Travis Finch
-------------------
Imaike may seem like just another neighborhood to the layman, but after enough nights on the town in Nagoya, one would find that it is actually a thriving district littered with spots for frequent live music and other arts. Plastic Factory is one of these gems that attracts the bold and the weird, artists and fans alike. If you visit more than once, you’re bound to see a recurring face because Plastic Factory is usually a good time that brings people back for more.
Sometimes Plastic Factory is a packed house where you can’t see someone on the other side of the room. This Saturday night had a little more intimate setting however. That’s not at all a polite way of saying no one was there. It was still full of roaring applause and other forms of exclamation. I simply mean this show had more of the atmosphere of a house show or a big group of friends watching each other take turns on instruments in a garage. Human Name and Masattack’s Steven Stringer harped on this sentiment when he opened the night by stating “Welcome to Musical Smorgasbord, where we have more cables on stage than we know what to do with.”
HNAMA is a two-man act that can be described as “very experimental.” Their sound involves a lot of live looping guitar riffs and vocals. Looping would become a running theme in the night. At one point the audience could feel the different layers pulsating over one another in a barrage of  sonic unfamiliarity. I use the word, “unfamiliarity,” because the music began to feel unpredictable. It definitely wasn’t contrived or anything like that. I heard an audience member say at this point, “I feel like I’m on LSD right now.” I hope the duo wouldn’t be offended by my calling their music “weird,” but I feel like that’s what they’re going for anyways. Beck and Captain Beefheart at the weirdest points in their careers would be intrigued.
The next act was another two-man band referred to as “Futsū No Banana.” If your Japanese is no good, it means “Ordinary Banana.” They were the only instrumental band of the night and this set had a real garage rock vibe to it. I could actually imagine it going over well in a park *cough cough.* The riffs and drums were solid, but the in between banter was also a plus. By request, they finished the set with the early 90’s Power Rangers theme song, but couldn’t quite finish the tune, gave up towards the end, and laughed it off as good sports. It was a funny moment for everyone.
The two male pair acts were then followed by two solo female artists. The first of which was the dazzling Aichi queen of cabaret, May Chu Chu メイチュチュ. She is a multi-talented artist who can be seen belting out tunes with her rockabilly band or hosting a wide range of respectable events with a sharp edge of wit and humor. Tonight she was flying solo on the mic with only the help of a phone hooked up to the PA. Her acts always involve crowd participation and one memorable moment of the night consisted of May Chu Chu assigning different factions of the crowd to each sing a single word of the chorus in Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now.”
The following female artist was truly a unique and creative individual named Rishao who composes the most interesting atmospheric songs with a keyboard, sampler, and other surprising instruments that she would loop live on the spot. As it was my second time seeing her perform, an audience member asked me what Rishao’s sound is like while she was setting up. I started by saying, “it’s electronic,” and the other person asked “Like EDM?” “No, not quite.” I tried to find comparisons but couldn’t. “Have you heard of Crystal Castles? Wait, it’s not like that. You know Portishead? No, nevermind. It’s like Bjork. Actually, not really. Com Truise….what am I saying?” The truth is Rishao’s sound doesn’t give the impression that it’s influenced by anything. It seems like a pure artistic representation of one’s self. I can’t describe it any better than that. Rishao is Rishao and you have to experience it yourself to get what I’m talking about.
Minus Rishao, the other acts all followed with second sets. Futsū no Banana delivered a much more satisfying second set filled with post-rock guitar grooves, building tension on the drums, and overall a more complete sense of songwriting. There was even a metal track aptly titled, “Heavy.” Not to take anything away from the songs in the first set, this is just the time that they really shined. May Chu Chu took the stage again and performed a hilarious music bit teaching colors of the rainbow with a medley of iconic pop culture numbers involving lyrics that the use red, yellow, etc. I won’t spoil the act if you haven’t seen it, but I was thrilled for an excuse to chant a certain gothic metal band from the 90’s. Human Name and Masattack closed out the night by hypnotizing the crowd with more sounds from another realm and overall this show was a very enjoyable evening between friends and musicians.
Special thank you to Heinz Senn for keeping open such a wonderful space for artists and fans alike to frequent.
Head over to Human Name and Masattack's Facebook page for music and upcoming shows: https://www.facebook.com/humanname/?hc_location=ufi
You can catch Futsū no Banana on their free park tour at Sakae Plaza, Shimozono Park, Shirakawa Park, Tsurumai Park, and Meijo Park on December 7th. Don't miss May Chu Chu as well as some other local acts on December 20th at Bemondsey Arms. The Western Culture Has Many Facets
My buddy, guitarist Brian Hughes, toured with the Chieftain's in China as a beginning behave with Loreena McKennitt. Then he went on to do with the Chieftains in North America and Europe when they were promoting their recording Santiago. In China they performed about ten reveals between Tokyo and Osaka, largely at delicate chair traditional show halls. The sitting ranged from 1500 to 4000 capacity. They were booked through the agent Plankton who specializes in Celtic music. Even though the readers were enthusiastic Brian thought that Celtic music was 紅白歌合戦 見逃し a niche market in Japan.
In the event that you listen to most of the standard Japanese folk tunes they have a bittersweet quality that is similar to traditional Celtic music. The Japanese minor pentatonic degree is different from the american one but some terms particularly when they're going in to the key could easily be items of Irish or Scottish people songs. If you look at the conventional transverse people flute the shinobue, it's actually not too distinctive from the fife, or Irish flute when it comes to fingering. The manner of slipping and taping with the whistle or the shinobue are also similar.
The major labels in Japan all have Celtic music under certificate and CDs can be found as imports. A respected vendor of Irish audio in Japan is just a organization called Music Plant. I think they possibly are affiliated with Plankton. JVC (Japan Victor Corporation) right signed the group ANAM. They've noted two pictures for JVC and have toured Japan three times. A talented small musician from England, Tim Edey who performed switch accordion on my newest album Celtic Heartland only joined the class recently.
There clearly was a business in Tokyo named Trinity who was simply devoted to posting standard Celtic CDs but I'm uncertain they are however in operation. Brian Cullen an Irishman from Wicklow now residing in Nagoya has his own name for marketing their own substance called Celtic Otter audio and he has published selections of ballads.
There is a Celtic festival used annually in Tokyo at Ryutsu Center. They have audio and dance performances, style reveals, arts and designs exhibitions and seminars and workshops. There can be an organization called CCE Japan that provides classes for most Irish devices along with Set Party and Gaelic. CCE Japan could be the Japanese branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, an association for marketing
There are some quite accomplished Japanese Celtic musicians. Isao Moriyasu, who started as a established camera participant, now specializes in Irish flutes. He lectures at Kunitachi Audio College and has published a guide on Irish music. He frequently works along with his partner Masako who plays Celtic harp, concertina and bodhran. Mayumi Nagaura who's a member of The Increasing Pints, even offers her very own class named BIRD. She's a really good accordion, container whistle and bodhran player. She has encouraged a great many other Japanese to master Irish instruments.
