I love the raw beauty of the Australian Outback, the red dirt and barrenness, its honesty and lack of pretentiousness, and I have enjoyed the opportunity to get to know and appreciate the small subtleties in how species behave out there.

One of these has been the Common Bronzewing. It has been fascinating to notice that they are absolutely the last to arrive for a drink in the evening in the Outback, landing well short of any water, waiting, frozen, to see if there is any danger and then dash a little closer, just to freeze again. Finally, within touching distance, the reviving drink palpable, they display the most incredible caution. Waiting forever, and if feeling even vaguely unsafe, or unsure, they’ll happily retreat and give up an eternity of their slow advance to start the waiting and watching slow progress all over again. I think this behaviour is due to the lack of natural cover.

This male frustrated and teased me for almost an hour with his caution, but in turn gifted me a handful of images that beautifully captures his earthy beauty, the surroundings and those beautiful iridescent wing feathers as the light turned from pale straw-coloured to molasses.
