Hollowpox Chapter 31 Analysis
@potionwitchmaya-15 got me thinking about chapter 34, in which there’s this interaction between Morrigan and Squall:
“Why can’t you just stop them if they’re such a problem? I don’t understand!”
“DO YOU THINK I HAVEN’T---”
Squall admits that he TRIED to stop Wintersea and her party. He tried and FAILED. Squall, who can make a disease and transform a house with the flick of a wrist! Squall, who calls himself a GOD! Yet he can’t beat Maud Lowry. He regularly claims that he is second only to her power. Not her party, her.
Curious, I went back to Chapter 31: Call Me Mog, where Morrigan talks to Wintersea. This chapter is fascinating already, but I thought I’d take a closer look at it with the power of hindsight, and wow, this chapter is full of things to analyze.
I think it’s clear, looking back, just how utterly manipulative Maud is from the beginning. She knows exactly who Morrigan is, how she got there, and what she went there for from the very start, but she plays along with Morrigan’s lies for a while until Morrigan’s hands pass through her wig.
She also paints the Hollowpox as “Awful business,” and “a terrible and dangerous disease,” when, if we trust Squall (and on this, I do), she was the one who asked him to make it in the first place, as an extermination of the Republic’s wunimals.
She also denies that the Hollowpox came from the Republic, saying, “Why would you believe such a thing?” and “All borders between the Republic and the Free State are closed. How could this disease have entered one from the other?” Clearly, she is lying about not knowing this, as Squall and the spy vessel from Chapter 18 tell us. Yet even without those facts, Maud herself revealed that she knew that Morrigan escaped to the Free State. Claiming she believes the borders are fully closed is one of the most blatant lies she tells, and even Morrigan can see that it’s a trap.
But specifically, the part that was most interesting about this chapter was this moment on page 441:
“But they’re your party,” Morrigan pointed out. “Aren’t you the one with the power?”
Maud stiffened slightly and cast her a wary, calculating look.
Morrigan rushed on, worried she’d said something rude. “I just mean...well, you’re the president, after all. Shouldn’t they do what you say?”
“You’d think so, wouldn’t you?” said Maud, and the wary look melted away with a perplexed chuckle.
This part in the book had always confused me before. Why was Maud so caught off-guard by what Morrigan had said? What did she think Mog was implying?
Now I think I know: POWER.
In Hollowpox Chapter 34, Squall calls President Wintersea the most powerful person in the realm. Even in Nevermoor, Squall calls himself the second-most powerful. Maud stiffens after Morrigan calls her “the one with the power”. By Maud’s reaction, I think it’s safe to say that she didn’t think that Morrigan knew of this “power”, and that this “power” is what Squall keeps alluding to.
Somehow, Wintersea has this secret power that makes her more powerful than a fully realized Wundersmith, and she wasn’t happy when she thought that Morrigan knew about it. What is this power? Who, other than Squall, knows about it? How can it beat someone who calls himself a god?
What are you hiding, Maud Lowry?
Please feel free to add your thoughts on Maud and Ch. 31!

anybody want a discord to join?
so. wei created a huge multifandom rp focused discord, especially with lesser known fandoms in mind! it has all kinds of fun stuff and you can really choose your own experience! (ignore the name of the server, it was the only thing we could think of to call it)
you might want to join if:
. you want a server that is dedicated to being the best it can be!
. you want a server that respects all headcanons and interpretations while appreciating literary analysis
. you like one or more small fandoms, want to meet other people who like those same fandoms, and maybe even rp as well
. you like dnd
. you want to have the option to create and post things for rps or to not have anything created/posted for rps if you want!
. you like servers where non-mods get to have a lot of say in everything basically on the level of mods
you might not want to join if:
. you don't like the idea of there not being a limit to the amount of people who can rp as a character or how many characters someone can rp as
. you don't like the idea of anyone being able to submit any fandom to either be able to be RPed as or to be banned from rp.
. anything else in the rules and info channels doesn't sound good to you
. you would be uncomfortable with the fact that the only time when wei would consider adding a limit to people joining would be when there are multiple active people for every character in every fandom
. you would want to have stuff created and posted for every rp, even if someone in said rp wouldn't be comfortable with that
. you don't like that the mod team, including us, the server owners, aren't going to be an authority thing but rather a group to carry out server tasks
. you aren't comfortable with the fact that the media here is going to be imperfect and that there will probably be Cwed discussions of said imperfection
mentioning + tagging some of the smaller fandoms and characters that are added in here (as well as mentioning who wei play for transparency)(nowhere near an exhaustive list of every fandom but mostly tagging the smallest ones so that wei can find more people, also wei only tagged some but typed and tagged other fandoms so yeah):

(wei play bai yu xiu)
our life now and forever
(wei play tamarack and our olnf oc)
beyblade, beyblade burst, beyblade metal fury, etc.
(wei play free de la hoya and gingka hagane)
ayakashi romance reborn
(wei play yura and kuro)

(wei play emily lestrange, based off of the novels mostly)
dear dumb diary
(wei play jamie kelly)

(wei may not play any characters from noisz yet, but once wei get starlivht working and/or find a playthrough, wei might play sumire or grace)

(wei play finis)
nevermoor
(wei play morrigan crow)
return of the blossoming blade/return of the mount hua sect

December 2023 Books
AG Christmas stories: Addy's Surprise by Connie Porter; Samantha's Surprise by Maxine Rose Schur; Kirsten's Surprise by Janet Beeler Shaw; and Felicity's Surprise, Josefina's Surprise, Kit's Surprise, and Molly's Surprise by Valerie Tripp (reread)
Discussed elsewhere!
The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion: Vol. 7 by Beth Brower
I found this one more difficult to get through the most of the previous installments, mostly because it introduced a romance that does absolutely nothing for me.
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens (reread)
Annual reread.
Silent Nights: Christmas Mysteries edited by Martin Edwards
I got this book mostly because it contains the Christmas mystery short stories that should be annual rereading and it's more convenient to bring along while traveling than separate anthologies. The Doyle, Chesterton, and Sayers stories are all old favorites, but the rest of the stories in the collection were less interesting--or it could have just been that I wasn't reading them at the right time.
Switching Well by Peni R. Griffin
A girl from the present day (...in the 1990s) is switched in time with a girl from 1890s San Antonio. I have a passing acquaintance with some of the places described, so that was fun.
The Eleventh Trade by Alyssa Hollingsworth
I was not expecting this story to rip my heart out the way it did.
Tenthragon by Constance Savery (reread)
I get a hankering for this one around Christmas for no particular reason, and it was so worth the reread.
Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend (reread)
I read this for the first time on a plane and it was magical and I was traveling last month and felt like this was exactly what I needed to read on the plane again.
Adam's Common by David Wiseman
A timeslip story of sorts? It was good. I have nothing intelligent to say about it.
Comics
Stephen McCranie's Space Boy Omnibus 1-3
I love this series. A lot more than I was expecting to, and I can't wait to get the next volume (yes, I know it's all online, but there's something about encountering it in physical book form). I love the complexity of the characters, and the plot twists are captivating.
Everything pertaining to Damage and the Ray (reread/skimmed)
You all know how I feel about my boys. There's a lot of analysis yet to come.
Everything pertaining to Triumph
Apparently this character was ridiculously unpopular, with everyone from the readership to DC staff, mainly because he threw off the Sacred Origins of the JLA and because he's an unlikeable jerk. Even his writer has described him as "the hero you love to hate." But I'm approaching this from a literary standpoint, and it's very clear that he's a superhero version of The Tragic Hero, and it works. I'm fascinated by the complexity that Priest gives him.
Really, guys, 1990s DC writers did not have to go that hard with their characterization but they did and I have so much respect for it.

Here I am with the next Nocturne Song analysis! This time, I will be doing Squall’s song. I’ll be going line by line and explaining what I think the song implies.
“Little Crowling, Little Crowling, with button black eyes,”
Now, many people think that this line refers to Morrigan. She’s been described with black eyes, and her last name is literally crow, BUT in the context of the rest of the song, I think this refers to Squall. I will explain more in the coming lyrics.
“Swoops down into the meadow, where the rabbits all hide.”
I think this line refers to the “meadow” as an alternate name for Nevermoor. Nevermoor is like an expansive and welcoming meadow, especially to Morrigan, and that’s where all the “rabbits” (citizens of Nevermoor) hide from Squall.
“Little Rabbit, Little Rabbit, stay by mother’s side”
Now we come to where I think it talks about Morrigan. Morrigan is the little rabbit who feels Squall, the Crowling, with Jupiter (the mother in this context). The song warns her to stay near Jupiter, somebody who can protect her.
“Or the Crowling, Little Crowling, will peck out your eyes.”
This line doesn’t refer exactly to Squall pecking Morrigan’s eyes out, but could talk about the manipulation she’s going to face at his hands. “Pecking out” her eyes could be making her blind to the good things she has in her life, and turning her more towards him, instead of Jupiter, the mother, who will protect her. Morrigan is the little rabbit, and she’s playing right into Squall’s hands and setting herself up to be blindsighted by him.
Additions are welcome!

I was rereading the beginning of Wundersmith and it just now clicked to me that the reason Israfel seems/is so unhappy is because his mood is affected by those around him and he is literally always around empty additcts who only come to see him so they won’t feel as bad about themselves.
Israfel is happy and fulfilled when he IS singing, since everybody else feels that way about his voice. That is the one moment he can feel a sense of world peace, but after he stops... it’s just this terrifying, miserable, empty feeling that fills the room and he can’t get away from it.
I’m saying that Israfel is addicted to singing the way his audience is addicted to listening. He is only worth something to people when he’s performing. He is addicted to mattering to people and making other people feel better. They love him when he sings. He loves him when he sings.
Other times he drinks to distract himself. RIGHT AFTER he’s done with his performance, he rushes to drink in his dressing room.
He is constantly flipping between these two worlds, one being perfect and the other painful. He’s probably got some really conflicting feelings about himself. He is an arrogant diva but I feel like he can’t help but self-loath since those who come to his shows always feel like they aren’t worth anything.

More Wundersmiths theory part 2
Part 1 of this post: Click here
*Spoilers ahead*
Tumblr media
In part 1, I talked about the possibility of other reincarnations. I also somehow completely forgot about the bids Morrigan got on Bid Day but was reminded by Simu @shoot-i-messed-up (full credit to them for this idea btw). This would actually make a lot of sense! Maybe they wanted Morrigan as their apprentice? I’m pretty sure they know about Squall (since he has his own Wunder company and everything) and wanted to protect her or use her for their own motives?
Then there’s the cursed child registry. Apparently, there are 3 of them (not including Morrigan) between Southlight and Far East Sang. Let’s say they’re Wundersmiths. The Republic would be “harboring” 3 other Wundersmiths. Maud would know about the registry since she’s the president. Maybe she’s suspicious of it?

The math (assuming this is all true) : 2 known Wundermiths (Morrigan and Squall), 2 unknown bidders and 3 cursed children. This makes 7 Wundersmiths in total, but there are supposed to be 9 originally. Idk about this part, maybe there more clues? this whole theory is probably all wrong why am i doing this
Let me know if I should make a part 3 to go more in depth for Bid Day!

Hollowpox (spoilers) Theory
"An accidental duplicate of Nevermoor. Exactly the same, but well...a bit different. It popped into existence 13 ages ago. Nobody really knows why or how. The league of explorers thought one of their people had messed around with the gateways and made it by mistake, but nobody ever put their hand up to take responsibility."
--------
This was most likely Squalls doing somehow. I don't know how he managed to get it in nevermoor, but the book also says that the gossamer line was an accident which turned out to be Squalls doing.

Everyone knows how much I like to call "The Wondersmith and his Sons" a very Ezra Squall song, and I want to share this fun thing I found in the comments of a lyrics site:
Tumblr media
[ID: A comment reading: "I heard him say at a live show that this song is about if you are going to con someone don't con strangers, strangers are skeptical con your friends and family they will believe anything" End ID.]
I don't know how true this is, but it reminds me a lot about Squall, the Courage Square Massacre, and some of his possible motivations behind the revolt and what he did..... 🤔
I know every comparison I like to pull between this song and Squall is probably very coincidental, but the brain worms will never rest until I share them anyways. Anyone have any other thoughts on how this song could apply to Squall?
