Hi this is Blaze's fucked up lil Refuge hc
Emphasis on fucked up
Please read at your own risk
Thank you @noxexistant for checking over my t/w and making sure I had everything I needed for it
T/W: Homophobia, transphobia, transmisogyny, period-typical attitudes/bigotry, implied s/a
So technically the Refuge is an orphanage. It’s also a jail.
And a conversion camp.
Snyder would use the typical methods of ‘straightening kids out’. The stimulants, the nausea inductions, the violence. He’d also use more… unorthodox methods.  If someone was suspected of participating in sodomy, and the usual methods didn’t work, he’d start trying to beat them into submission. If someone was suspected of cross-dressing, depending on who they were he would try and… coerce them back into the proper clothes.
I personally hc Tommy Boy and Bumlets to both be transmasc, so they’re who are currently living at the forefront of my brain with it.
Bumlets was the first to be caught. He would be dragged to Snyder’s office, kicking and screaming, trying to get away. He’d come back changed. Emotionally, mentally, and physically. He’d come back dressed to the nines in skirts and frills and whatever the hell else Snyder decided.  And he’d play the part inside the Refuge. Small, helpless girl, shying away from the boys.  Out on the streets? He’d kick their asses with ease.
Tommy Boy was slow to catch on. Couldn’t figure out why Bumlets would say that he was a girl when he was in the Refuge. Couldn’t figure out why he would throw away the thing that connected them and built the foundation of their friendship.  And then, he was taken to Snyder’s office, just like Bumlets had been.  He didn’t come back the same kind of changed.  He was jumpier, scared of anyone and everyone. He’d gotten quieter.  The only person he trusted was Bumlets, but that was only when he was living as himself, instead of how Snyder was trying to parade him around. If Bumlets was letting Snyder control him, Tommy trusted no one.  He stayed to the side, was dragged back to Snyder’s office on nearly nightly basis, but he stayed true to himself.  He was showing everyone that it couldn’t be a crime for him to live as himself. And that he wasn’t letting anyone take that away from him. No matter how often Snyder tried to tear him down.

Because the EU is a consensual organization, it was vulnerable to campaigns that raised emotions. Because it was composed of democratic states, it could be weakened by political parties that advocated leaving the EU. Because the EU had never been meaningfully opposed, it never occurred to Europeans to ask whether debates on the internet were manipulated from outside with hostile intent. The Russian policy to destroy the EU took several corresponding forms: the recruitment of European leaders and parties to represent the Russian interest in European disintegration; the digital and television penetration of public discourse to sow distrust of the EU; the recruitment of extreme nationalists and fascists for public promotion of Eurasia; and the endorsement of separatism of all kinds. Putin befriended and supported European politicians who were willing to defend Russian interests. One was Gerhard Schröder, the retired German chancellor, who was in the employ of the Russian gas company Gazprom. A second was Miloš Zeman, elected president of the Czech Republic in 2013 after a campaign partly financed by the Russian oil company Lukoil, and reelected in 2018 after a campaign financed by unknown sources. A third was Silvio Berlusconi, who shared vacations with Putin before and after leaving the office of Italian prime minister in 2011. In August 2013, Berlusconi was convicted of tax fraud and banned from public office until 2019. (..) In 2018, Berlusconi began a political comeback. In the post-communist east European member states of the European Union, such as the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland, Russia financed and organized internet discussion outlets to cast doubt on the value of EU membership. These sites purported to provide news on various themes but in every case suggested that the EU was decadent or unsafe. In the larger west European media markets, the international English-, Spanish-, German-, and French-language television network RT was more important. RT became the media home of European politics who opposed the EU, such as Nigel Farage of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) and Marine Le Pen of the Front National in France.

Dylan

Robert Carlson's Ultimate Story Structure Chart 2.0
Tumblr media
Introduction
This is a transcription of a compiled table by Robert Carlson. It’s neat to have a source of all these story structures together, however, reading said table is a really big struggle for me because I have certain visual struggles. As such I decided to transcribe each story structure into something more readable and visually easier to read.
(I may, at another time, choose to transcribe it all into a single table as the original source depicts.)

Personal Thoughts
Overall, despite the lack of cultural diversity when it comes to these story structures, the list gives a very interesting food for thought when it comes to story structure, including some which wouldn’t be considered story structures in the first place. It’s a very useful list for expanding one’s knowledge of story structure and flexibility into adapting it to one’s own story.
I might in the future compile my own personal list of story structures with more cultural diversity and

Oscar and Morris take delight in beating up newsies (pg 42)
Davey has the most idea what a strike is, which isn’t a lot
Pulitzer has a ‘legendarily icey heart’
Denton meets the boys at ‘Tibby’s’, not Jacobi’s

Racetrack takes Times Square
Crutchie takes the Bronx
Pie Eater and Snoddy take the East Side

Okay! Anon hi! My brain has stopped lagging long enough to form thoughts
I stand by my earlier thoughts of Jack not going up alone wouldn’t have the same impact of betrayal
T/w period-typical -phobias
However
The leader of queens is actually transfem! Only her borough members know it.
Until she meets Racer. Who’s transmasc and out and proud
Then, suddenly the rumor mill is running with the fact that there’s a new queen of Queens.
The newsies are confused when they see that ??? it’s the same person???
Racer immediately understood when she first came out, and protects her with his life. At first it’s just trans solidarity, but he actually really likes hanging out with her. So they’re friends
Does this have anything to do with Snyder?
Not really, just a fun thing I wanted to include
Now then
Being LGBT was literally against the law back then. Punishable by death. And ik that a lot of the fansies don’t have period-typical phobias in their hc
BUT
Nigel Snyder absolutely would’ve been all kinds of phobic
So when he finds out that the ‘queen of Queens’ is just (in his words) a boy playing dress up. That’s all he needs to fire threats and curses at her.
He doesn’t like any of these kids. But he pays attention. He knows who’s who and what everyone looks like
He threatens to call police on her. The real actual police. Not just the bulls (who are nothing more than bribed grunts) or the Delanceys. And she’s rightfully terrified.
So when Spot storms Queens in a rage, trying to call her a coward and a sellout and all these other things everyone’s calling Jack, she doesn’t back down.
She gets right in his face and calls him a hypocrite and a phony.
“What if it had been Racer, huh?! Would you want him being a part of it at the threat of his life?!”
And that effectively shuts Spot Conlon up.
“That’s what I thought. Now get out. We’re trying to figure out what to do.”

Notes from the Newsies Novelisation
• Snyder's first name is Nigel
• Davey's internal monologue describes Jack as Irish
• Davey knows Jack is lying about his family but plays along to spare his feelings
• Lodging house rent is a nickel per night
• Jack keeps an old photo of his parents in a tin behind a brick in the bathroom (this is mentioned in one of the versions of the script as well)
• In the novel version of events, Jack and Davey are literally already eating when Denton introduces himself. They agreed to let this guy buy them lunch before he gave them his name or introduced themselves. What.
• Spot's opening line is "As I live and breathe" I can no longer take him seriously
• Also yes he is described as a red haired, freckled gnome in a bowler hat a size too small
• And he snaps his fingers and somebody brings him a cigar and somebody else lights it for him. Boy you are so fucking extra I can't even
• Also it's implied he was playing the harmonica. I live for this.
• Spot's boys have socks full of sand as weapons.
• Jack lassos a chimney and Davey is super impressed
• It's not a photo in the paper but a drawing of them all by an artist
• "Including Spot Conlon, who clearly considered himself the hero of the day"
• Most of the other Newsies are referred to, in the narration, by nickname or first name only (even if surnames are known), Spot is referred to 90% of the time as Spot Conlon. My boy gets some god damn respect
• David feels guilty that he didn't get arrested with the others
• "On the grounds of Brooklyn" is described as an "intricate legal manoeuvre" in the narration. Beautiful.
• Spot goes with them to break out Jack (this is true of the version of the movie script I've seen as well)
• When Spot tries to attack Jack for being a scab, the Delanceys shove him back and he scrapes up his face on the ground.
• Davey's internal monologue after Jack scabs "He felt as though someone he loved had died"
• There's a scene where Jack goes back to the lodging house and finds his savings stolen and his photo ripped up. (This is in the script as well.)
• Les is made to stay with Sarah because if he's on his own he sneaks off to newsie square to go strike by himself. CHILD
• "The younger Delancey" (it does not specify whether that's Oscar or Morris) is impressed when Sarah punches him
• Mayer and Esther give Jack some clothes and food to run away with
• Sarah stops him leaving by reading him Denton's article
• Roosevelt converts the refuge into an orphanage
I read the book via open library so if you wanna check it you can do it here - https://archive.org/stream/newsiesnovel00fastrich

Note
'And there was Mush, who was cross-eyed since birth and skinny as a bean pole, with ears as big as pitcher handles.' Jack also has a hidden box in the bathroom where he keeps money and a photo of him and his parents. 'The background of cacti, desert and a blue sky was a painted flat provided by a photographer on the boardwalk at Coney Island. For five cents, anybody could have a western dream.' Also, Snyder has a first name...And it's Nigel of all fucking things. I hate it more than anything.
Omg no. Nigel Snyder? No. That sounds wrong. I don’t like it

Matthew Goode on Portraying Such an Evil Character in ‘Stoker’
by The Ultimate Rabbit
Matthew Goode’s performance as the enigmatic Uncle Charlie in “Stoker” brings to mind the one Joseph Cotton gave as Charlie Oakley in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Shadow of a Doubt.” Both men show a pleasant and courteous exterior, but there’s something in their eyes which tells you they are really twisted. Goode has delivered many strong performances in movies like “Match Point,” “Watchmen” and “A Single Man,” but it’s going to be impossible to forget him after seeing him playing a very frightening sociopath in this one.
Now playing a character as evil as Uncle Charlie has got to be a lot of fun for actors, but at the same time they really can’t judge a character like this too much. Once they do, they fail to portray them in a truthful way and their performance eventually rings false. Goode, in an interview with Nigel M. Smith of Indiewire, however, made it clear he was not about to fall into the same trap.
“I’m not a method actor; I think that would be rather exhausting on this sort of a project. But I don’t judge the character; I think that’s safe to say,” Goode told Smith. “You’re conning yourself between action and take. I don’t think about it too much, I just do what you have to do. You know there’s a camera in your face, and there are times when you can just get completely lost in it and the take is over. Then sometimes it’s very choreographed and you have to get your head in there to match with someone’s eye line, and I love that. I love the technique.”
“So with a darker character like this, it’s quite fun,” Goode continued. “It’s something that’s very different to who I am. I’m not a sociopath and I don’t go around strangling people. It’s just like kids playing. That’s really what our job is. We haven’t grown up.”
The other important thing to remember with a role like this is not to play it as evil. Yes, Uncle Charlie is evil as can be, but to portray just that one side of him would make for a very boring performance. You have to look at this character like you would any other and examine their wants, needs and motivations. In doing so, you will give yourself different areas to explore, and your performance will be all the better for it. In talking with Katie Calautti of Spinoff Online, Goode explained how he went about preparing to play Uncle Charlie.
“You can’t just play bad,” Goode told Calautti. “I wouldn’t even know how to start playing bad, or what that even means – it’s so two-dimensional. So you have to find some sense, despite his despicable acts, some kind of psychological truth of why. And director Park (Chan-wook) talked about bad blood and the idea that there was a predisposition within the family bloodline to want or need to commit these acts, and where does evil come from, is it nature or nurture? And for me they’re all very lonely, isolated characters. So I felt like, as much as this is a coming-of-age story for Mia (Wasikowska’s) character, Charlie’s kind of trapped in the past.”
The best scene in “Stoker” comes when Goode joins Wasikowska on the piano, and the two engage in a duet which can be best described as beautifully intense. Watching these two actors duel with one another while pounding away at those black and white keys was exhilarating, and it was the one scene from this film I wanted to know the most about. Karen Benardello of We Got This Covered was at the film’s press conference and asked Goode what it was like shooting this particular scene.
“It became liberating in the end,” Goode said. “I hadn’t played the piano in 20-odd years. So coming back into the fold of the piano, it was unbelievably daunting. Luckily, I don’t have a bad-sized hand, so I didn’t have to leap or anything like that. But it was hard work, but it was great working with Mia. We learned about three quarters of it, because some of it was just too hard, and too much going on with both hands. But we were able to fake some of that, and he was able to shoot the whole thing from whatever angle he wanted. We kind of recognized that in the vocabulary of filmmaking. When someone starts playing, you think, is he actually playing that? (laughs) He was able to dip down, and you go, they are! It’s not a trick on the audience, so it was nice.”
Tumblr media
Hopefully Matthew Goode’s performance in “Stoker” will help burn his name into our collective consciousness because every moment he is onscreen is filled with a rising tension which never lets up. While he doesn’t let you in on all his character’s secrets, you know he is like a snake waiting to strike. He has already worked with a number of well-known directors such as Woody Allen, Tom Ford and Zack Snyder, but Goode makes it clear how a lot of the opportunities which have come his way so far have been the result of sheer luck.
“I’m not the person who’s able to pick and choose their roles,” Goode said. “But I know that Nicole [Kidman], for example, has said that she’s interested now – there might be a film in the studio system, but she loves independent film and she thinks that’s much more where her desires are, and the films she kind of likes. And so I think she is able to say to herself, ‘I like to choose projects not only based on the material but also the filmmaker,’ which is wonderful for her. And I think I just happen to have been quite lucky in the fact that the material that I gravitate towards or the people that have thought I am going to be better suited to it – because it’s not my choice, they’ve picked me. I’ve been lucky as hell, and the parts have been quite varied.”
