As I completed SM64 now, I think I may make this "saturday morning mario" official in my channel roster. I'm on the fence if I want to start Sunshine or go try out some smw or sm64 hacks.

beating super mario 64 was very cathartic. i don't know what i exactly was feeling; i just started litterally crying. the only components i could decern (out of many) was "wow i fucking DID IT" and "oh my god dont leave me". i should talk to my therapist about that haha.

i never thought a silly 90's plumber game would make me cry like XIV Shadowbringers but here we are

anyway i got to play outer wilds VR and it was really cool. the rain hitting the surface of my helmet was especially cool

content spoilers under cut

i only went to giants deep bc i forgot my cable and the latency made it unplayable for minutes at a time. BUT IT WAS SO COOL! looking and seeing the inside of my ship, looking around the viewport instead of turning the ship or holding a button... im really thankful to the people who make and maintain NomaiVR, the outer wilds community is so cool

Maddy’s VR Game Recs #3: Outer Wilds

Outer Wilds benefits from not being spoiled at all (seriously), so I'm going to speak at arm's length about it: This is a flatscreen game that can be modded to use motion controls using Raicuparta's excellent NomaiVR mod. I exclusively played it that way, and as a result, I remember this game as a series of in-person spaces I navigated through; a remarkable feature to add to a game that's been so frequently and glowingly compared to Myst. This game and its DLC would've already been all-timers for me, and VR has only elevated it; I'd rank it above Half-Life: Alyx as not just the most impressive VR game, but also the best argument yet for making VR versions of every game that takes place from a first-person perspective, at least for those who want it.

Be forewarned, this game was not graphically designed for VR and so requires a relatively modern video card to run smoothly; I played on a card equivalent to a 3060 Ti using FSR and had a pretty good time. It also uses smooth locomotion and contains 6DOF spaceflight, meaning you need to be used to VR to play.

Outer Wilds VR Mod with Motion Controls Looks Incredible

NomaiVR is very much still in-the-works; however, the latest test footage of motion controls make this fan mod of Outer Wilds look like a must-try.

Outer Wilds is among the best games of 2019. Mobius Digital’s time-bending tale is a must-play if only to see that stellar ending. However, a new fan project is aiming to bring the game into a brand new dimension. NomaiVR is a fan mod that lets you step into the shoes of a Hearthian and explore the galaxy in virtual reality. It’s still in a very early state but is currently playable. Of course, there are many features that slowly being adding, including motion controls. What is there now looks awfully promising though.

Being able to completely immerse yourself in Outer Wilds looks awesome. The gameplay in Outer Wilds is already relatively simple (if a bit fiddly), so it should translate pretty well to VR. Plus, can you imagine seeing the ground fall out from under you on Brittle Hollow? Or how weird it will be to fall through the sand on the Hourglass Twins? There are several opportunities for some jaw-dropping (and vomit-inducing) experiences with this VR project. I can’t wait to try it out once it becomes more stable.

Again, NomaiVR is playable, but note that it is very early in development. Don’t go in expecting a polished experience just yet. However, if you’re interested in either trying it out or even helping with development, the creator has a post up on Nexusmods for you to download.

Outer Wilds is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. If you want to try out NomaiVR in its early stages, go to Nexusmods.
