2022 TREND PREDICTIONS
Now that 2021 is coming to a close, I think its perfect timing to predict some fashion trends that may be seen throughout the new year, 2022. Here I’ve curated a list of eight items I believe will have a huge grasp of popularity within the new year of 2022, enjoy!
• Minimalism:
This past year we have seen a lot of color. On the runway and in streetstyle, color has been a huge thing for 2021. Since the lock down due to the pandemic many people gravitated towards pops of color and groovy prints, such as the signature House of Sunny “Hockney Dress”, that was very popular but than became something of a mockery on TikTok which made people dismiss it completely are now looking for something else. With the emergence of micro trends and many people wanting to find their own style, many people are now looking towards minimalistic fashion and fashion pieces that they can wear constantly and not have to worry about it going out of style. Basics are going to be seen a lot throughout 2022 and I’m myself am looking forward to seeing minimalist fashion make its own new wave in fashion.
• Subversive basics:
In the past year of 2021 we have seen a trend known as subversive basics become the IT fashion trend to participate in. As seen on TikTok, different creators are taking basic items in their wardrobe and putting a new spin on it. Whether that’s taking simple black stockings and cutting holes into them, making them into a cut out top. Or taking a tank top and artfully layering it with with bodysuits to take o. The more futuristic approach. I personally love this trend and think it’s artfully creative as the trend is varied depending on the clothes, however I believe it will take on another life in 2022 and I can’t wait to see it.
• Printed stockings:
With the popularized aesthetic of the preppy style many people are dressing in their preppy outfits with androgynous stockings that make the outfit pop even more. No more are the simple colored stockings, now printed stockings are the perfect way to make your outfit look even more unique and distinctive. And in 2022, printed stockings will be the new craze. From printed graphics to patterned tights, in 2022 this trend will be seen and worn by quite a few people and I’m excited to see the fun and cute prints that are going to be seen and worn in the year of 2022.
• Everything PLATFORM:
Since the platform shoes were popularized in the 70s it looks like fashion is taking some cues from the iconic era and making its comeback. Platform shoes were the IT shoes of the 70s, during the disco era entering the dance floor with sky high shoes that made its presence known. Nowadays platform shows have re-emerged, from Doc Martens 8053 platforms shoes to Versace platform heels, it doesn’t look like platform shoes are going anywhere any time soon.
•Y2k:
The early 2000s style has re-emerged within today's style, as seen on TikTok and on the runway for Blumarine’s latest Spring/Summer 2022 collection, Y2K is here to stay and is reinventing itself in different ways. Since the reemergence of low rise jeans and early 2000s brands like Baby Phat and Juicy Couture, it is not far fetched that many iconic Y2K clothing items are reemengering in today’s fashion trends. Clothing items like ironic graphic tees were huge in the early 2000s and it looks like these ironic graphic tees will be seen a lot in 2022, as well as, folded over pants which can serve as another form of low rise jeans, in addition to dad sunglasses which have been really trendy this past year in 2021. I see this dad sunglasses trend prevailing even more in 2022 and I’m not honestly not mad about it.
• Wired Headphones:
This past year vintage looking wired headphones have become a huge trend. With the popularization of the KOSS headphones, wired headphones have become the new it thing since the APPLE airpods back in 2016. Wired headphones have become a form of an accessory and its safe to say that wirde headphones will make a resurgence in 2022.
•Knit Wear Craze:
It is undoubtedly known that after a year of quarantine everyone will prefer comfort. The need to be cozy and warm is the ultimate craving this time around and it’s not far-fetched that we are keeping cozy in style. From knitted sweaters to balaclavas, knits are becoming a very popularized item that everyone is sure to love and want in their wardrobe for 2022.
•Neck Ties:
The phenomenon of the neck tie was very popular during the early 2000s amongst pop stars like Britney Spears and the hit show, Gossip Girl, but progressively lost its popularity as the years went by. However, the neck tie has become a genderless accessory that is not considered just menswear. It has become a staple piece in everyone's wardrobe and is becoming the new IT accessory for next season’s fashion trends. The necktie has seen many twists and turns and it looks like it will reinvent itself again in 2022.
I’m excited for the new year and the new fashion trends that will emerge within it. I can’t wait to see and even wear some of these trendy items myself as I go into 2022 looking my best. What are you most excited for? And what is a fashion trend you see occurring in 2022?
