I don't know much about Ruth so I'll ask the entire hearts section nyeheheheh

ruth's my lone wanderer! (fallout 3 protagonist) i think youd like him. he very much tries hard to be A Tough Guy because apocalyptic wasteland, but at his core he's a very soft man just trying to survive and learn to love the world around him and his place in it.

❤️ RED HEART — what are three of your oc's positive traits?

ruth is loyal and selfless and kind, down to his core. the wasteland is scary and cold and dangerous. despite it, he does Good - little things that he doesn't think matter, but that's just not the way the world works. a little girl gets hurt and even though he doesnt know her well, she's alone in a town far from her home, and he goes there to spend time with her so she's not alone. when bryan wilks comes to him asking for help, ruth drops everything to do so. and when when bryan's dad is discovered to have passed, ruth sets aside his own grief of leaving home to help this boy as much as he can, even through ruth is barely a man himself.

🤍 WHITE HEART — what are three of your oc's neutral/questionable traits?

down to his core to a fault. he trusts too often, and trusts the wrong people sometimes, usually more often. he's loyal until he gets burned; he doesn't have the foresight to see when things are bad until it's directly in his face. he trusts too much, too hard, and his judgement is Not Great.

and the wasteland is scary, and he is barely a man himself - 19 years old and kicked out of the only home he ever knew because of his father, the only family he's ever had. his coping mechanisms aren't. well they aren't good. he copes with drugs, alcohol, sex. anything to check out mentally.

💔 BROKEN HEART — what are three of your oc's negative traits?

growing up in vault 101 under the thumb of an abusive and overbearing overseer, being fed 200 years worth of xenophobia towards the topside, as well as america propaganda about "the strongest country in the world", with a nice dose of a deep christian upbringing within the vault, ruth is. well. he's misled, you could say. he doesn't mean to be but oh my god he has some ideologies he needs to unpack (don't worry, he will).

but because of All That he has a complex about the people in the wasteland. he's not cruel, he's just a man at the cusp of adulthood trying to survive, but his morals and his politics are very... they're very. he sides with the enclave because he believes in their speech about the restoration of america. he thinks he needs to be selfish and cruel an dmean because That's How You Survive The Wasteland. he's mean because he thinks he has to be because he doesn't see people of the wasteland as civilized as himself or the vault (he learns otherwise, that infact the people of the vault are cruel and mean, but it takes awhile)

he's easily manipulated, with drugs and alcohol. loyal to a fault to the father who abandoned him, who had ruth raised in the environment in the vault because of james' own fears of the wasteland above. ruth does not see that james was a bad father and thus isn't even at the point of unpacking that he has severe daddy issues that the cruel, conniving men of the wasteland can sniff out like a truffle pig.

💘 HEART WITH ARROW — what and/or who do(es) your oc consider the most important to them?

if you asked him he'd say finding his dad. going back home. god and the restoration of america. his morals. but to his core he cares about love, connection, community. he wants to live, not just survive, with his friends, his loved ones, and he wants to be happy. ruth always thought the people of the vault were his community, even as they were mean to him, because he knew nothing else, and he clung to the idea of it like a lifeline. it was the only thing keeping him going. but the wasteland is full of people just like him, who are kind, who love, who have passions, and while some of them are mean - a lot of them are mean - there are those who are not, and smile when they see him, and ruth will take detours and go out of his way just to get a nuka-cola for them, just to see them smile. that's so important to him.

ruth only speaks english, but gretchen (mentioned little girl earlier) teaches him ASL, and during his time in the wasteland he picks up some phrases in other languages. i imagine him in his future being moderate in a ton of languages :)

ruth is proficient in having the worst judge of character and making the absolute worst decision making. otherwise he's strong and good at bat swinging. he'd be good at punching if he like. knew how to throw a punch.

yeah yeah james is voiced by liam neeson i made ruth irish blah blah thats so basic I MADE HIM WITH I WAS 15. what do you want from me.

i have not decided if ruth has killed anyone during his escape of vault 101 but the answer is: probably. maybe? in the game you kind of have to but when do we abide by canon here. he does seriously wound someone tho; himself, right after leaving the vault, blinded by the sun (seeing it for the first time) and never having the deal with terraine before he walks right over the cliffs edge. gets some nice gashes on the left side of his face. Is Jude the White Horse Joseph was talking about, who was meant to bring forth the apocalypse, instead of Earl? Instead of Joseph? Because you're left to interpret the roles of Joseph being an actual prophet(?) or the anti-christ y'know. Jude is also kinda with that bc is she Joseph's Judas??? 🤷‍♀️

🖋 Has a sensitive stomach, can't handle a lot of things in the vault, and even less so in the wasteland. He struggles with malnourishment.

🖋 Struggles between his overall good nature and the brainwashing that the wasteland is a dog eat dog world. Ruth tries so hard to be selfish, self-centered and self serving. He's not interested in anyone else's problems, he's got enough on his plate. But he was raised to be a good little vault boy, and when a nice old lady asks him for help, he can't say no. Eventually he'll learn it's all about kindness and love but he's thickheaded.

🖋 I associate him with sunrises; yellows and warm browns and soft reds and pinks.

🖋 She's a sniper, but only discovered her skill at it when traversing through Whitetails. Never quite got used to bow and arrow post-apocalypse. She's very happy to have regular ol' guns back (not that she's shooting nowadays. Living in the lap of luxury of doing fuck all).

🖋 Has chemistry with every other Seed besides Joseph. Jacob and her could've been friends in a different life. Faith is exactly the type of person Jude dates. John and her can be civil from time to time, even partake in friendly-ish banter (insulting each other's frats bc John's for sure a frat boy). Literally nothing with Joseph other than being doomed together.

🖋 Joseph doesn't know anything about her life or past and Jude doesn't know anything about his (besides what's in The Book of Joseph and what he traumadumps at the player). Been together 20 years and Joseph doesn't even know Jude has a brother.

🧸 - On a scale of 1 - 10, how ‘soft’ is your OC? 1 being the edgiest of edges and 10 being a literal teddy bear that cries at everything? (Bonus questions, where on the scale would your OC place themselves, and where would they like to be on the scale?)

I'd say Ruth (Lone Wanderer) is my softest OC! He doesn't want to be but he's got the title. He's very melancholy. I'd rate him a 7/10, but he'd rate himself a 3/10 because he thinks he's SOOOO cool and manly.

Jude's the biggest crybaby (as in, cries the most), but I wouldn't describe her at all soft. I rate her a 2/10, she'd rate herself a 5/10, because she's the one feeling all those big emotions, she doesn't think she's cool and edgy.

The rest are edgy 😔 Emotions are for squares

🌅 - What is your OCs favourite time of day? Are they a morning person or a night owl?

Donnie, Wood, and Logan all stay up really late. Donnie and Logan for nefarious purposes- drugs, drinking, partying. Logan, long walks in the graveyard at 3am. Wood because she works as a prostitute at Gomorrah- just part of the shift. All their favorite times of day is night, because it's the most fun.

Ruth tries to stay up late but he's knocked out by midnight usually.

Jude wakes up the earliest, which is saying something because Jude hates waking up period.

37. What is your OC’s biggest dream?

Ruth’s not really a dreamer. In the vault, he never really needed to. His life was set out before him. He did as he was told and he didn’t ask any questions. In the wasteland, Ruth’s just trying to make it through to the next day. It’s not that he struggles with the wasteland itself (which he does), but the main antagonist to the story is his own head. Getting out of bed is a chore, and one that seemingly gets harder and harder. I guess you could say his dream is to be in the right headspace to be able to have one.

38. How does your OC react to and handle stress?

Chems. Drinking. Good old Dad never really taught Ruth how to handle stress. James was always really busy, what with Alphonse Almodovar hanging over his shoulder. It’s not like James meant to blow Ruth off, but Ruth’s childhood problems didn’t seem so important to James compared to what he had going on. He listened, but he never heard. So the moment Ruth tumbles out of the vault and the first John with a pretty face offers him some med-x to take the edge off, he takes it gladly with a swallow of scotch, and the vice took.

39. How does your OC handle anger?

Ruth doesn’t really experience anger? He gets irritated, sure, but he never gets angry- he just gets sad. He blames everything on himself, so the only person he can get mad at is himself, but there’s something wrong with him, so he just gets sad, and it’s a vicious cycle of self-hatred he has to work through.

40. How does your OC handle grief?

Ruth more or less shuts down. He tries to continue on with life as normal, as if nothing happened, but the grief is suffocating, and his body goes on autopilot. He’ll lose weeks to drugs and if someone’s not there to grab his hand, he’ll drown. 

41. What is your OC’s greatest fear?

When Ruth was in the vault? The surface. Ruth never wanted to go outside. Everyone told him it was a horrible, desolate place, and why should he not believe them? The day he was forced to leave 101 was the scariest day of his life not only because his entire world was flipped upside down, but because he had to face his greatest fear with his community holding a gun to his head. Now? Like, dogs.

Unlimited meatpies at Gary’s.

38. How does your OC react to and handle stress?

She doesn’t. Anything that gives her stress? It doesn’t exist anymore. It’s a person? She’ll stab them until they go away. No stress, only vibes.

39. How does your OC handle anger?

Stabbing. Screaming. Destruction. Your typical 8 year old temper tantrum but the child is unkillable and has a bowie knife.

40. How does your OC handle grief?

I legitimately have no idea. There’s two ways it could go: either she becomes a mass murderer who kills everyone in her path, or she pretends that person or thing no longer existed.

41. What is your OC’s greatest fear?

Nothing, and has the confidence to back it up. She’s been shot in the face, she’s fallen off the Rivet City flight deck, she should be YOUR greatest fear.

1. What is/are your OC’s nickname(s) and how did it come about?

Besides “Lone Wanderer”, and the childhood nickname of “Nosebleed” given by Butch and the other kids after a well timed punch, the only nickname Ruth has is “Ruthie”, because Sid knows he hates it.

4. What is a noticeable physical attribute of your OC?

5′3″ short king <3

16. What is your OC’s strongest childhood memory? Why and how has that impacted him/her?

I don’t know if I can come up with one specific incident off the top of my head, but I guess when Ruth finally reached the age that he realized he was... different. Most of the adults in the vault always treated Ruth bad, and that behavior was picked up by their children by the time their children were formulating sentences. He internalized all that scorn. Butch DeLoria was treated the same way*, but in Ruth’s child eyes, Butch deserved that hatred from the adults for causing problems and being a rude little bastard. Ruth wasn’t like Butch. He didn’t lash out, he didn’t bully people, so obviously something was wrong with him. As a result, Ruth grew up looking for praise and acceptance from people who would never give it, and he never understood why. Well, that is until he fled the vault and had a very enlightening conversation with Moriarty.

*I headcanon that Butch’s father is actually a wastelander, and the vault’s xenophobia is the root of all their hatred.

Ruth’s very anxious. It’s hard for him to adjust to the wasteland. The vault was already a lot, with The Overseer breathing down his neck and judgmental eyes peaking around every corner, his own father loving him but the disappointment made the relationship tense. Ruth was used to being overlooked and a disappointment. It became comfortable, in a way that you grow accustomed to a rock in your shoe.

The wasteland threw it all off. Talking to new people, adjusting to new things like lakes, cliffs, the expanse of the open sky, dogs. It’s a lot. Very overwhelming. Ruth wants to form connections with people but taking on new things, new people, a new life, it’s hard, it’s scary. He doesn’t want to be a new kind of disappointment in which he can’t handle the wasteland by himself. He doesn’t want to ask for help.

What modern-world candy would they love the most?

Ruth would probably be a big fan of twizzlers. I say this because I am a big fan of twizzlers. They fuckin’ slap. Simple, easy, delicious.

Crosby and Boy are both kids who will eat anything, especially Crosby, who is a human vacuum. Boy would be more picky, with his choices being unpredictable and make little sense. He would enjoy snow caps very much, because they fuckin’ rock.

Wood would not like candy, and would only make exceptions for things you can suck on. Like those boring cherry flavored candies that taste like medicine. Mints. Disgusting but I respect it.

Donnie likes candy you can CRUNCH, that is not meant to be crunched. Like jolly ranchers. Would take his fangs and break those things in half and make everyone around him uncomfortable. Hates gum.

Wem would like butterscotch candy.

hahaha Ruth’s first kiss was with Butch, drunk teenagers in the closet (literally and figuratively) with too much teeth. The only person to ever know was Paul, who found it so funny he didn’t tell a soul (also cuz fuck Wally).

I have no idea what Donnie’s first kiss was like.

Boy and Crosby are both children who haven’t had it yet, and Wem and Wood are Old As Balls (ok Wood not really) who don’t even remember their first kiss, so it is therefore Irrelevant.

Are their parents alive?

Crosby and Donnie never had parents. Wem’s are not alive (probably) since he’s Old As Balls. Wood’s are more than likely not, and if they are they’re living in Westside. She doesn’t know where they ended up and she doesn’t care, she’s been on her own since she was very young.

What’s their guilty pleasure?

Ruth is probably like, allowing himself a moment of peace. Sitting and plucking on a guitar string, singing, looking at the stars. Ruth feels as if he’s not allowed to have these small comforts, and is rather embarrassed being caught doing them.

Wood likes to read! Kicking back with a book with the radio low is so cozy, and something she’s rarely allowed to partake in. No one at Gomorrah knows she can read and she’d like it to stay that way.

Crosby has no guilty pleasures. She’s 8 and does whatever the hell she wants. 

On the other hand, Boy’s is cliche in “remember his family”. He’s adapted to the present and doesn’t reflect much on his past or his family, but takes moments to just sit and remember the different life he had.

Donnie has no guilty pleasures. He feels guilty about nothing. (he’s also my least developed, so that answer will change down the line).

Wem likes to eat people. He doesn’t really feel guilty about it, just guilty that he’s going against Marjorie’s orders. Not guilty enough to stop, but y’know.

What’s their favorite ingame location?

Ruth loves Agatha’s House. Time away from everything to spend time with her and her violin, climb up onto the roof and watch the stars, listening to Agatha tell stories about her husband... it’s such a shockingly normal part of the wasteland, just this old woman living tucked between some rocks. It grounds him.

Crosby and Boy enjoy Rivet City. Sure, they live there, but they actually like it. A huge half-ship with little crevasses skinny little children can crawl through for hide and seek or a secret stash of stolen things. Walls that make an obscene amount of noise that annoys everyone within the vicinity. An off-limits back portion to the boat that is incredibly dangerous to get to. What’s not to love?

Wood, while vibing on the The Strip, grew up in Freeside and considers it home.

Wood - Rouge. Stealth based intelligence queen.

Boy - Ranger. Grew up on a farm. He has very good aim.

Crosby - (idk the difference between Sorcerer and Warlock) She’d have powers but her powers would just be explosions.

Day 1 - Strength - Ruth

How physically strong is your OC?

Ruth’s got a strength skill of 8! His muscles are as big as his daddy issues, which makes wearing t-shirts hard, between the wide shoulders, big arms, and short torso. He was a pretty chunky kid which Butch and the other kids made fun of a lot, so in his teens he spent a lot of his time working out and building muscle mass. By the time he’s out in the wasteland, he’s in prime fit condition. 

How good are they in melee or hand to hand combat?

Despite being Swole As Hell, Ruth actually isn’t very good at fighting! He can throw a punch and make it hurt, but he lacks the lifelong training a lot of Wastelanders have, which puts him at a massive disadvantage. He could get by in scraps within the vault, but in the real world, where fighting is a matter of life and death? It’s not so easy.

Ruth feels more comfortable with a bat or axe in hand. Having played baseball in the vault, he’s much better at melee than unarmed, but his shoulder does get injured. Hitting someone’s head is way different from hitting a ball.

Do they just punch things or are they trained in martial arts?

He just punches things lmaoo

He picks up things along the way, of course, but he’s never officially trained. I dunno what happens after Project Purity, if he sticks around for the BoS training, but I feel like he wouldn’t. 

Can they carry very heavy guns around easily or carry loads of supplies, or are they not that strong?

Ruth is really short, a whole 5′3″, so carrying big guns is less of a strength problem and more of a height problem. Can’t have your mini-gun dragging in the dirt.

Carrying a lot of supplies is more up his alley. He struggles a lot at first, the first few weeks (months) out of the vault. Carrying a lot of things is killer on one’s back, and he suffers greatly until he starts to get into the groove of things and his body becomes accustomed to the large weight. He tries to not carry too much, though.

There had been a party, one Ruth hadn’t been invited to but he showed up anyway, chuckling at the shocked expressions of his peers as the door slid up. They hadn’t been expecting anyone else, and by the way their bodies relaxed when it registered it was only him, they had expecting The Overseer behind the door. Wally Mack had stormed over, hands in fists, but it was Butch DeLoria that asked him what he was doing here.

“Same as you.” Ruth had shrugged, crossing his arms to hide the nervous shaking, a bundle of cloth under tucked under his arm. “To get fucked up.”

“Yea, well, you’re not invited, nosebleed.” Wally Mack smelled strongly of whiskey. It made Ruth’s nose twitch, but he didn’t turn away. “So why don’t you run back to daddy. You and little miss Overseer ain’t invited.”

There was a pause. “I won’t tell her if you won’t.” Another pause. Nobody moved. “I brought scotch.”

No one seemed to want him there but Butch dragged him in anyway, taking the cloth-covered bottle from his hands with a grin. “You’re doing a shot, t’make sure you don’t tattle on us.” Ruth sneered at that, and the shot burned, made him shudder. There was laughter behind him, and when he turned to look, he saw Wally and Susie Mack laughing, pointing at him. Pale hands grabbed the bottle from Butch’s tanned ones and two more shots were poured. Butch howled with laughter when Ruth threw it back and followed suit.

That was hours ago. The bottle of scotch was long dry.

Christine Kendall and Jim Wiltkins had stumbled off together, wrapped up in each other’s arms and kissing like they knew what they were doing. Susie Mack and Freddie Gomez had been kissing at some point, but Freddie was throwing up in the bathroom and Susie had disappeared. Wally Mack was curled up under the table, passed out. Paul Hannon had retreated half-drunk back to his room after being tested by a plastered Butch on if Paul could act sober enough. Ruth thought he did pretty well.
