To the sleepiest of travellers I know
Tumblr media
My piece for the Like Light Through The Prism zine anthology for Pride Month.
Explanation below because it’s a bit long
I themed it around one of my favourite spirits - the Off-Season/Home/Old/Daily/whatever-you-call-them Guide, AKA Sleepy Traveller (I like to think they’re the same person!) and their cousin, Sanctuary Guide (according to Ash, that is.) for the emotional ties I have to the former and the implications of them both being magic users. It fits perfectly with the turquoise stripe meaning magic on Gilbert Baker’s rainbow flag - the stripe meanings being the theme for the zine as a whole!
There are many forms of love aside from what’s societally pushed as ‘most important’, so I wanted to express the value of familial love through this (the text being inspired by my own feelings about Sleepy too, though in different ways) and the emotions felt around a long-overdue reunion, when those you value the most indefinitely separate from you and the aches for their return, especially when that happens often.
I’ve had to deal with a lot of loss of sorts over time, including losing contact with people that I know understand and accept me the most, especially as a queer person. This is to honour all those lost bonds, and ones that reform despite it all, and ones that never do.
-
That aside, I hope you enjoy this piece! My first big one on a drawing tablet too. Had a lot of fun figuring it out, and the payoff was very worth it.

Cliffside Retreat
A hideaway for a few forlorn deserters
Fanseason of Passage/Cycles inspired by the celts that I decided to stop working on for now, it was going to be about war deserters in the Golden Wasteland, hiding near the waning peaks of the Valley of Triumph. It would be set near a mountain lake that’s at first muddy and polluted, but as quests are completed, arches would emerge from the gradually clearing waters as the landscapes slightly change to reflect each season of the year. More under the cut !
The questgiver would have been a warrior at the head of a troop who decided to desert the battlefield to save their and their people's life, they got bear themes since they were seen as rulers of the forest in some mythos, and the link to the Ursa minor/major constellations as guides was really cool. They feel like a failure and a coward though, and the fact they they all ended up getting got by darkness anyway doesn't help, so what's left of their troop will try to cheer them up during the season.
Each spirit is inspired by a realm we cross before the Wasteland (with the questgiver themselves being GW) to symbolize how much one has lived through before making it to the middle of their life. So, pretty much, this is a season about reminding yourself of how many cycles you passed through before that kind of hardship, reminding you that you got all the experience you gained so far to do so. I also like to think there could be parallels between deserters feeling guilt because they made a complicated choice, and being into adulthood realizing a lot of complex things also have higher stakes and feeling like you're betraying yourself and what you stand for.
The first few quests have you gathering items to build the hideaway back; The first one has you look for scraps with the Wayfinder, summoning the first arch (spring) and making grass and a few cold-colored flowers appear in the desert. For the second quest, you help the Laborer carry and assemble shelters, after which the second arch of summer emerges and the landscape becomes even more verdant with longer grass and warm-colored flowers blooming alongside the ones from the previous quest. As for the third quest, the Blacksmith asks you to deliver items they crafted to the other spirits, making the third arch of autumn come out of the water as harmless rain falls in the area and all the plant life that grew so far turns various shades of yellow, orange, red and brown.
The last two quests are special: Fourth quest starts off normally with you helping the Performer play a song to cheer everyone up, which works... until the fourth arch of winter emerges. A clap of thunder not unlike Eden's is heard, and it becomes split in two (mirroring the twin elders). Snow falls upon the Cliffside Retreat and covers the grass and flowers as the winds become more violent, making flight more difficult... Finally, the questgiver themselves ask you for help for the last quest: a storm is sending all the work done so far flying, and you have to catch it mid-air. At the end, the guide plays their carnyx (an instrument ultimate gift), summoning an elder bird and its flock to guide the winds into being less chaotic. The clouds part, and underneath starlit skies, you see an aurora borealis. The spirits fix what they can, and after looking over life blooming in the area even more colorful than it was before, they feel at peace and ascend to the stars.

Bit of a silly question and I don't know how relevant it is to this, but I just want to know what the Off-Season Questgiver is up to - where have they visited recently?
Tumblr media
Questgiver: Oh, I’ve been out and about! I tend to scavenge around to look for areas that haven’t yet fully recovered from The Calamity and try to restore passageways back to those areas. They usually become locations for future “Seasons” almost immediately afterwards.

Lil complaint about Shattering
Tumblr media
It's not been long since the Season of Shattering has begun and while I like some of the cosmetics (some I really don't, they're very recycled from other seasons) and I really like the idea of the Eden eruptions, with dangerous shards we have to purify, I already feel bored by it. And I'll tell you why: No, it's not the repetitiveness of the Shards event, that's fine, I like it, it's challenging and the rewards are good.
It's the absence of spirits.
I'm a Little Prince moth so I've been playing for almost a year and it's not a lot, but the seasons I've played through were all full of spirits with strong personalities, lovely cutscenes and specially in the Season of Performance I've felt an entertaining, lively bond with them. It was fun to play with previous spirits, see them walking around the areas and being so well animated in the quests and cutscenes. Buying cosmetics from them was cute because it was their outfits.
In Season of Shattering, so far, we have a prism questgiver and four shiny dots in an empty room.
I get that they wanted to make something musterious that seemed off compared to previous seasons but it's really getting bored and I barely feel like I'm playing through a seasonal event. There's no emotional bond to anyone in the season, I'm not doing these missions for anyone it seems, I'm not really helping spirits, I'm doing the missions because "the realms are in danger" but it feels just like a "because the game tells me to do it."
It would've been a million times better if those two light and two dark "spirits" actually had a body and interactions, maybe with the Krill and the Plant spirit trying to lure the player to the dark side and let the Shards destroy the land, and the Manta and Jellyfish spirit trying to save you from it, fighting to bring back the dark spirits as well. The player being the mediator between the two couples, while the mysterious Prism guide witnesses everything, silent, like an eye from Eden itself. A spy for the King? Who knows?
The potential this season had was immense. I know it's not over yet even in Beta but so far I feel it's been wasted a lot...

Bloom Guide: I made tea.
Off-season Questgiver: I don’t want tea.
Bloom Guide: I didn’t make tea for you. This is my tea.
Off-season Questgiver: Then why are you telling me?
Bloom Guide: It’s a conversation starter.
Off-season Questgiver: That’s a lousy conversation starter.
Bloom Guide: Oh, is it? We’re conversing. Checkmate.

Important Announcement
There’s currently a bug affecting some (possible all) players in Sky live that is causing quests to not give you candles upon completion, once you talk to the questgiver.
The quests will mark themselves as complete and redeemed after talking to the questgiver, but candles will not be added to your total.
It’s unknown at this time if candles will be refunded when this bug is patched-- for the moment, I would recommend holding off on redeeming quests just in case.
There have been a number of other less serious bugs reported as well. The end of the season has likely caused some new issues to surface. Be careful, and be sure to submit bug reports either in the app or through the Discord should you encounter these!

Season of Performance
Definitely totally unprompted to write this one down because of...stuff, but I actually did mock up a season based around performance a really really long time ago. Possibly my first one actually. I’m pretty sure the motive was simply because I wanted more instruments and pretty cosmetics
I’m kind of just trying to remember what I came up with like, two years ago and stuff, so it’ll be a bit of a short one. Also I’m pretty sure I made the Rhythm season guide came back for this one
So lets go with what I do remember! This is kind of similar to my Season of Stories idea, that it was based around kids putting on a show. I don’t know about you, but I went to a couple recitals when I was a kid, so I think this was also based on those experiences. But like, less centered around one instrument at a time and more broad. kind of like a talent show? maybe?
There was a cello kid, a singing kid, definitely a dancer, a sculptor...and I dont remember the rest. One thing that I really wanted to establish was how broad the Arts are and how many different types of artists there are. Like you see the word Artist and usually you would think painting and drawing, but there music and writing and dancing and acting, you could even throw cooking into that category! Plus, in ‘Art’ alone there are various types as well, you have digital art, traditional art with paints or color pencil or charcoal, and you have sculpting and other 3d art. Oh wait I forgot about sewing! theres a lot
Yeah so I wanted like, a kid that specializes in one of each of those arts to perform in some kinda way, show off their skills! Between it all, they each go to the Rhythm questgiver for advice and guidance (This might be subject to change but this was how I initially planned it) I mean, he kind of seems to be like the really well known celebrity of sky, even including the skykids. You don’t just have a giant bird for nothing.
You follow each of the kids as they practice their skills, their highs and lows, and how they help each other out as well. They may be competing against each other, there may be some rivalries, but overall they’re still friends

[Image Description: The edit is organized into two panels side by side at the top, one large picture in the middle, and one narrow picture at the bottom. The first panel shows a moth sky kid ready to enter the Constellation Gate to the Treehouse, with no text. The second panel shows the sky kid going off into the forest leading to the Treehouse which is not in sight yet, with no text. The big picture in the middle shows the Treehouse superimposed with the sky kid high-fiving the Assembly questgiver, with accompanying lyrics in cursive font reading: “'Cause they say home is where your heart is set in stone / It's where you go when you're alone / It's where you go to rest your bone / It's not just where you lay your head / It's not just where you make your bed.” Note that slash sign means switching lines like the return key. The picture at the bottom shows the Sky kid sitting at a bonfire surrounded by seats inside the Treehouse, with accompany text in the same font reading: “As long as we're together, does it matter where we go?.” End ID.]

Wanted to take a couple days to parse my thoughts, but I am now ready to give my Opinions on DOS2.
The long and short of it is, I do recommend it!
The combat was FUN, the story was engaging and compelling, the side-quests were all either heart wrenching or hilarious, and the music was beautiful and so were all of the locations and the music always SUITED the location which isn’t always easy to achieve. And the characters were all interesting, too, by which I mostly mean NPCs, and I only got to run around thoroughly with 3 companions but some of them were genuinely amazing for their development and growth. I got way more attached than I was expecting to for some of these characters.
If you’re familiar with turn-based RPGs, it’s one of the best ones I’ve ever played! If you’re not, it should be okay, but I’d recommend watching a couple tutorials or reading some tips/and tricks before going in because this game is DENSE.
I do have a few minor complaints, and if you’ve been following me shrieking about this game for the last month, none of this is new, but I will put it under a read more;
The second act all along the Reaper’s Coast really dragged imo, and that’s for two reasons; one, the rate of acquisition of new quests vs. the rate of completion on old quests is like 5 to 1 and it quickly gets overwhelming and things quickly start to blur together, and two, companions are too quiet during Act 2 and need to be chattier to break up the monotony.
I will grant you having too many things to do in an RPG is never a problem, and it’s nice to have a lot of different quests lead to the same location, especially if that’s an important area that has a lot of Plot Shit in it, that’s just called good level design. But I always like hearing companions comment on things not only because it makes them feel more developed and the experience more immersive and impactful, but also because, fuck dude, their comments help me keep track of why we’re even here in the first place. Was this for a main quest or a side quest? I don’t fucking remember! I have The Dumb! Your fleshed out, well developed questgivers who are important stand out, or sufficiently tragic shit like “Look, the Magisters are burning down this village!” stand out, but Dwarf #12 with Dwarf Problems asking me to look into his Missing Dwarf while Magister #4 also asks me to look for Dwarf but I’ve already decided to declare open season on Magisters and now there’s no one interesting left to remind me about what I’m supposed to be doing without checking my journal is just... woof, bro, I am NOT gonna remember this shit.
At the very least, this slog could stop blending together so much if the flag markers that automatically pop up for quests were fucking LABELED. Yeah, there are like 6 flags in this place, but what quests are they for? Fuck if I know, and there are like 40 in my journal and I don’t have time to read through them all, I guess we’ll find out when we get there.
And again, companions should just talk more in general. Not just at the end of quests, but during them. I grant you they won’t have an opinion on EVERY little thing, but given that they supposedly have special character flag dialogue for when I tell them to go talk to Magister #8 on patrol so they’re distracted and I can sneak this guy past their patrol, they clearly have unique responses to things! Let’s see that! And they should have banter and talk to each other! They can’t all just be attached to me! It’s about the FOUND FAMILY! That means they have to form bonds amongst each other! That’s why DA2 will always be the best Dragon Age game!
Anyway, other than the Act 2 slog, my biggest complaint is with the abruptness of the ending. I know the point of the game is to get TO where the Source is being kept, but the whole “And then the war with the Godking happened off-screen,” thing felt kinda... underwhelming. It’s important to stick the landing, and it wasn’t a BAD ending, but it was a little disappointing. I mean, we already killed the other gods, would it really have been such a big step to have, at the end, the Godking push through and nearly win, and THEN we got to choose what to do with the Source?
Like, if you want to be evil and side with the Godking or that demon doctor guy, you can beat him in combat first and then say “Now that you’re beaten, I’m calling the shots!” and enter into a tenuous partnership with them were betrayal is imminent. And if you want to release the Source or seal it all away by repairing the veil, maybe have us not kill the Godking outright but just defeat him so that he retreats. Then it can be to either seal him away while he’s weak, because it’s a one time opportunity even if it will mean turning into a silent monk, or to take the chance and release Source to the world and let people choose from there to fight what remains of the Voidwoken.
Idk, maybe they’ve got more they want to do with the Godking in later games or something, but for fuck’s sake, if you’re gonna kill all the gods by the end of like, fucking Act 1, you’ve got to let me at least take my shot at the fucker who calls himself the Godking. I am a scrappy little chihuahua with a scythe, high on rage, and I’ve already killed at minimum 4 gods, just lemme aim for this fucker too.
Still a good game, and a decent enough ending, I TECHNICALLY got to do what I wanted with releasing Source to the world. I’ve said before that there are exactly two things I want to do in any RPG and that is make friends and kill god, in that order. And I got to make friends. And I technically got to kill the sickly leftovers of what was left of the gods after the Godking got to ‘em. But I really. REALLY wish I’d gotten to at least fuck up the Godking a little bit if not outright kill him.
But I did get to make friends with my companions who survived Act 1 and shut specifically Rhalic up forever, so I guess that’s enough.
Oh, also, literally all of the armor is ugly except for late late LATE game wizard armor which looks like something out of Vampire Hunter D., throw a scythe onto that shit and you’ve got an AESTHETIC, but short of that, it’s crap, especially if you’re playing a woman, but ESPECIALLY if you’re playing an elf. This game does elves dirty with its armor.
But other than all that, all in all. 8/10. Recommend it.

VOTE OFF-SEASON QG/HOME QG/OLD QG/WHATEVER YOU CALL THEM AS BESTEST SPIRIT
Tumblr media
They’re the only fav spirit of mine left already but probably the one I’m the most vocal about who’s not seasonal (that would be Nod)
They’ve been the questgiver between seasons since the beginning of the game up to Flight - gone but never forgotten! Though they no longer appear ingame this way, they’re still such an important part of Sky’s history! So in honour of them, get them at least some way through this!
I do believe them and Sleepy Traveller are the same person but their role as QG is more meaningful to me so ig I’ll go with this form of them; will vote for Sleepy should this version of them not make it far
but yea. the friend I miss them as QG a lot but am so absurdly happy they weren’t forgotten in this poll. so let’s make the most of that

LMAOOO none of my favs (of the ones I genuinely voted for as my definite favs, some of them I voted as a ‘were I forced to I’d go with them’) got through the prelims 💔 except Sunbather (maybe? not sure if they are)
gonna be rooting for Mx Off-Season QG/the Home QG/the ‘old’ QG/default QG/whatever you call them now. I have nobody left that’s prob gonna be a genuine vote so glad one of my big big favs is yet to be in it and this is them
voting for them over Sleepy Traveller despite me thinking they are Sleepy because their role as a questgiver/quest guide has a lot of meaning to me ok
p. propaganda post soon
