Need Help With Jack?

I AM NOT SAYING YA'LL ARE DOING IT WRONG I AM JUST HERE TO HELP WITH SOME OF THE TRICKIER PARTS OF HIM OKI

Before we begin I just wanna say that I have CPTSD (what he would reasonably have from his childhood) and I am have been doing theater and performances for a very long time, so while I don't have a perfect understanding of Jack there are some things I can help with (by the way @the-l-is-silent-yall did a great post about writing Mihaly which encouraged me to post this so check that out)

This is going to be long, so here we go:)

First off. His makeup.

I've seen some people say he is wearing makeup to seem more feminine, but that's not really the purpose of this kind of makeup. This is a type of makeup that is formerly known as contemporary makeup. In traditional western theater, it is used on performers (usually actors or dancers) to highlight their features so they don't fade in the bright stage lights. Without it, performers would look washed out or blank to the audience. It is composed of powder, foundation, rouge, lipstick, and eyeliner. Female or feminine presenting performers will also wear mascara, and some actors will apply highlighter and bronzer to accentuate or create features depending on the character they play, but actors of all gender orientation will have to wear some sort of makeup. The most telling mark of Jack wearing this type of makeup is the eyeliner and lipstick, which helps you more clearly see his features when the camera zooms out. It also helps the performer's features stand out, since he is covered in white paint. Now up close this makeup looks like it's too much makeup or it makes his features look weird, but that's the point. I have had directors tell me "if you look in the mirror and see a clown, you are doing it right." Theater makeup of any kind looks over exaggerated up close on purpose, so it reads to the audience who is far away.

Next let's talk about how to write a very important part of his story: his trauma.

Now I've seen a lot of fics talk about Jack's relationship with The Traveler, and how there is mutual distrust, and how basically Jack is afraid of The Traveler in the same way Jack fears Nightswan. While I'm not saying this is necessarily wrong, (although I would love to see The Traveler be a good father just this once) it would make more sense if Jack was afraid of someone else:

Si'ha Nova.

In Jack's life, most of his trauma and insecurity came from his mother. He was raised to believe that Nightswan's treatment of him was normal among all families. Because that trauma came from Nightswan, he has a bigger chance of struggling with women in parental roles rather than men in father roles. Because most of my trauma was from my dad and other men, I had a hard time trusting older men. PLEASE don't take this the wrong way and think "oh, see he hates women." NO! What I'm saying is that Jack would have a hard time trusting and opening up with anyone he perceives as motherly. He might have more trauma responses when around Si'ha, such as flinching more around her or seeming more closed off. This can of course be helped, and I'm sure Si'ha won't have a hard time building trust with Jack. Now of course he might still have his trust issues and reservations about The Traveler, but it would be a lot less worse than those he would have with Si'ha. (i'm saying this in a mean way, this is just what I've learned about childhood trauma)

Now let's take about the inevitability of a trigger for Jack.

Triggers are the weirdest thing in the world. Sometimes they are obvious things. As an abuse survivor, I don't like people jump-scaring me and I feel uncomfortable when people start handling belts (i even rarely wear one) which is all pretty self explanatory and stuff and you would think that's the same for the rest of my triggers, right? Nope! No I can't watch Victorious, I freeze up when the Arizona Storm alarms play, and I will have a literal breakdown whenever I see one of those plagiarism warning screens. Also can't watch horror movies. Do they make sense to me? Not at all. But the reason they trigger my CPTSD is because somewhere in my brain, in my suppressed memory, my brain is reminded of my trauma and is launched into flight or fight mode.

Jack's triggers might be something that makes sense, like being in the mirror room or seeing something about the Swan Soldiers. But, he would also have more explainable or random triggers. A specific color could remind him of his mom. A melody could remind him of a song that was playing during a rehearsal gone wrong. A certain smell could remind him of a room that he wasn't particularly fond of in Nightswan tower.

So what exactly would be the best way to write Jack having a breakdown? Glad you never asked!!! I shall still answer!!

Jack having a breakdown could go down one of two ways. One, he could get really combative, aka fight. Not like throwing hands combative, but like suddenly being overly defensive and irritated over little things. Assuming someone notices this change of behavior, it would take a few moments until his brain finally perceives that there is no actual threat, and then celebrate by gifting Jack with an intense breakdown complete with tears and a panic attack that will literally leave him breathless. Option two, the flight option, will see Jack suddenly feeling the need to escape. Maybe he'll need to leave a room, or need to get off the street and into a building, or he might not even be able to be in the same room as someone. When his brain finally decides the danger is no longer in the room with us he will have a similar breakdown as he did in option one. But of course, there is a third, more fun, more secret option. Option three, freeze.

I'm a freeze person, and freeze is ten times worse than option one and two combined. When someone freezes, they will escape to a space devoid of people or possible threats. They will then find a place where they can observe all sides of the room without needing to turn, preferably a corner, make themselves smaller via holding their chest to their knees, and then have that extra special breakdown. The problem with freeze is your brain never has the opportunity the decide if the threat is actually gone, so instead of moving on you are stuck in this feeling of being in danger even if obviously you are not.

The best way you can write someone (most likely Wanderlust, knowing you guys) helping out is:

-No touching until he calms down. Touching always makes things worse. Not until he can voice that he is calming down.

-Trying to communicate breathing/grounding exercises. It will take a minute before he responds and partakes. @apexious wrote a really good example of this, just with reversed roles.

-Weighted blankets weighted blankets weighted blankets weighted blankets

-Have them try to voice what he is feeling/what he perceives the danger to be. Usually helps reduce trigger responses if they are encountered again.

And the last thing I want to note about Jack is that traumatic memories will most likely fade with time. Not the actual trauma or the memories behind them, but specific details will be hard to recall such as his specific age when it happened, where it happened, or other specific details. The brain likes to do that to protect you from specifically traumatizing or harmful memories.

Kaley: "Hey, Stewart!!"

Spewart: !

Kaley: "I just realized, you've never been to our house before!! Would you like a tour??"

Spewart: "Uhhhhh......"

Beef: "Darling, you need to not be up or being too active. I'll show him around!! You take a seat."

Kaley: "Okie-dokie!" *Sits down, in the air*

Trigger warnings for: imaged of Dieter, mention of rape, PTSD, and (a new topic) abortion

Beef: "It's gonna take a while to get this place exactly to our liking... We've already replaced the AC unit, installed a dishwasher, and refurbished the whole bathroom! Our next project is to build a patio. And when our baby comes, maybe we'll try to install a few play things!! I think a metal swing set would go GREAT just a few yards away from the future shed. And a sand pit can be added, too!!"

Spewart: "... Lovely..."

Beef: "... Hey, are you okay, hon? I've noticed this whole time, you've just been standing off to the side... Like you don't want to be here... Is something wrong?"

Spewart: "Oh, um... No!! I-I'm okay... Just nervous..."

Beef: "Ah, I get it... Well, if you need anything, just let me know!!" *Pats Spewart on the back*

Spewart: *Quiet*

Beef: "Hm... We've also been thinking about installing a-"

Beef: "Honey?? What's the matter??"

Spewart: "I'm okay I'm okay I'm okay!!!"

Beef: "You're NOT okay!!" :< "Here, um... I'll get you some water and some tissues!! Everything will be alright!! Please, sit down and breathe!!"

Beef: "Did something happen?"

Spewart: "N-No..."

Beef: "Can I help you with anything?"

Spewart: "I don't th-think so..." *Sniffle*

Beef: "... You're free to go get one of your siblings if you need to!! I bet they'd help cheer you up." :3 "Would you like me to fetch one of them for you...?"

Spewart: "They wouldn't b-be much h-help..."

Beef: "...? Look, I very much want to help you, kiddo. But I can't really do that if you don't talk to me. I won't tell anybody if it's something embarrassing or personal! I promise. It's okay to talk about your feelings...!"

Spewart: "..................................................... Well..."

Spewart: "...... I know that must be... HORRIBLE to hear about your own son... But... Um..."

Beef: "No, no... The fact that Dieter did that really doesn't surprise me, honestly... But... Seeing a VICTIM... And it's YOU... I feel different. Not that it would have been okay if it was someone else, of course... It's... Just... Wow. I'm sorry you had to go through that, Stewart."

Spewart: "Everything's fine... I'm slowly coming to terms with it... It... Actually feels kinda nice to get that off my chest..."

Beef: "Have you not told your siblings...?"

Spewart: "No... They never listened to me about all the things Dee did and said while we were together!! I doubt they would care about THAT..."

Beef: "Hey, you never know...! But, if your siblings aren't willing to support you over that, then... You can always come to me. I will support you, and tell them what's what. That's what chosen family is for."

Spewart: "Chosen family...?"

Beef: "Oh, ya know... Sometimes your real family... Sucks. But family doesn't have to be blood. If your friends, partners, or their families make you feel more welcome, then THEY are your family. Chosen family, I mean."

Spewart: "...... Huh."

Beef: "When... I got Kaley pregnant, back in the day... Neither of us wanted to keep the baby. We had whole lives planned ahead of us. We wanted to graduate and do great things in the world. We weren't even really in love then... And having a child would completely disrupt everything we hoped to do. We wanted to... Abort it."

"But... Both of our families were super against abortion... And they said it was our fault for not waiting until marriage. We have to "deal with the consequences." Both of us were told that if we followed through, we would be kicked out of our homes and never be spoken to by our loved ones again. So... We left. Ran away to a new kingdom, found housing, got jobs, made friends, started completely anew... Those people are NOT our "family" anymore... We've chosen new ones..."

"However. By the time we got things figured out... It was too late for an abortion. Kaley was too far along... So, the baby had to stay. Eventually, Dieter was born. Secretly, both of us despised him... Our lives were completely ruined because of this baby... But still, we tried to raise him as best as we could... It wasn't HIS fault... He didn't CHOOSE to be born..."

"Kaley and I were young, dumb, inexperienced, and clearly didn't have any positive parenting influences... Yet, we TRIED. Maybe we could have tried harder... Maybe we could have done some things differently... But it doesn't matter now, does it?... Our son was a monster. He was rude to people. He stole from people. He never helped people. And, he's hurt people..."

"....................."

Spewart: "......... Does... Does it feel nice to... Get that off your chest...?"

Beef: "Yes, actually... It does."

Spewart: "...... Are you afraid this new baby might turn out like Dieter did?"

Beef: "Horrified. I keep telling myself... I'm older now and have had practice raising a kid... I know what I'm doing... But no, I don't... There's no way to know... And I really hope, that even if this kid does turn out to be an asshole... That they won't harm someone like Dee did..."

Spewart: "..."

Beef: "Maybe... If the baby had more guardians in their life... More influences... Things may turn out differently. If more people helped shape their childhood... And it wasn't just me and Kaley, alone, repeating what we did way back when..."

Spewart: "..."

Beef: "I know this may be a bit much... And I don't expect you to say yes, but... Do you think you and your siblings would be okay with babysitting every now and then? We could really use the help when the time comes..."

Spewart: "Um... Sure...! I know Hariet and Rango have lots of experience with babysitting. Topper can probably manage things himself if needed. And I'd be happy to join them...!"

Beef: "Ah, perfect!!! Thank you so much, Stewart!! I know you will have a big impact on the baby!!... And, uh, your siblings, too!" :)

Spewart: "Of course!!"

Hariet: "Oh, Spewey!! It's been a half hour! Do you want to go...?"

Spewart: "Hm? Oh! No, I'm good!! Let's stay!!"

Hariet: "Really...? Well, okay!!!"

Maki Oze

🪄Despite having earned herself the nickname "Witch Queen" and her muscular physique, Maki is quite romantic at heart. She's very sweet towards her darling and dedicates a lot of time to them when she isn't working. She appears to be quite happy and she most certainly is, the problem is that as soon as she's left alone the guilt ambushes her. For you see, Maki knows that at least some of her thoughts regarding you are morally not correct and it makes her self-conscious at times. It's easy to forget such gnawing thoughts when she's constantly on cloud nine when around you but after that happiness fades away and she's left alone with her thoughts, she can't help but feel bad. The girl certainly isn't someone to act on impulses and darker instincts and she knows that much about herself too. Those new sides of her don't fail to frighten her at least a bit though.

🪄Considering the world this is playing in, Maki is also definitely on a more protective side. Infernals might appear randomly everywhere without any warning. When she thinks about you getting caught up in such an accident, she can't help but feel her heart drop a bit. Working as a Fire Soldier also means that she has seen a lot of things which would easily disturb the unknown person deeply. Maki can definitely also be more clingy when she has the time and the luxury to do so. She works obviously still as hard and dedicated as before since she knows that the wellbeing of people is part of her responsibility. You can bet that as soon as she has the chance though, she will go to you and stay with you. Going back to the whole romantic aspect of her, it definitely shows when you two spend time together and she shows her more feminine side.

🪄She's showing a very courteous side whenever you introduce her to someone close to you since she wants to make a good impression on them. Most people who she meets for the first time are in general treated with her courtesy but Maki can also get quite angry when someone triggers her. That's not to say that she can't handle a bit of jealousy but one shouldn't push her limit either. I do feel like she's considerate and not someone who is madly jealous and lets that feeling control her action. She's in most cases just a bit mor firm to remind someone what the relationship between you two is. If someone acts mature and respects that, she is very much willing to forget about it. What really raises her blood pressure though are the arrogant people who think they can flirt with anyone no matter if they're taken or not. When she's angered, most would be scared.

🪄She's a skilled fighter and has very good control over her ability which would potentially make her quite fearsome but she has a kind heart. Her sometimes more protective tendencies usually lead her to make sure that you won't get too much involved in her job since it includes dangerous missions and people. If she is pushed, she will fight though and that with more fierceness than what others are used to from her. Her protective side will lead her in certain scenarios to be more violent and if she gets really angry, she lets go of her consideration for a while and will be rather violent to fight against anything and anyone who poses a threat to you.

🪄Frankly spoken, Maki doesn't strike me as someone who would abduct her own darling. Her morals are playing a huge part in it too and it's not like her comrades wouldn't find out either if she would ever do such a thing. Thinking about saddening you and causing you to hate her and disappointing her own teammates and family truly isn't something Maki thinks she would be able to handle. I have a distinct feeling that in times of danger she might call her family and ask them if her darling can stay with them until the risk is over. She wouldn't even resort to an abduction if her darling would leave her. What Maki will do in such a case is stalk her darling and continue to protect them. It's not like she has given up hope completely either.

🪄She's a bit nervous when she introduces her darling to her family since she's worried that they might give you the impression that they're judging you. Her parents and her brother certainly are a bit sceptic since Maki is loved within the family but when they notice how happy she is and that you care for her too, they accept you. Others shouldn't let themselves fooled by her sweet exterior she shows you though because the woman can turn extremely scary if someone insults her darling since she sees red. If you shouldn't be a Fire Soldier and for that not possess any fire abilitites, she'll gladly entertain you with her own skills by creating fire creatures although she will still be careful so that you won't burn yourself accidentally.

Hibana

💐Hibana has pretty much a princess-complex of sorts and sees herself due to her position as captain above others, especially those working in her own squad. So I wish you good luck with this woman because she's as entitled as she is delusional when it comes to you. She's highly arrogant and overly confident in her looks so she believes that you will succumb to her charm too, will love her too. She's pretty much already acting all the time like you have a massive crush on her and are just too shy and insecure to show it. The level of delusion is dangerous because that only means that you won't get through her, no matter what you say or do. She always twists it inside her head to her own liking. Rejecting and avoiding her for too long isn't advisable since the woman goes after you with an infatuated zeal.

💐She won't shy away to use her position to manipulate you either if you try to separate yourself from the insane woman. She'll also use everything she has to find out as much as she can about you, indifferent to the fact that some things aren't for her to know. She's seeking out knowledge about Infernals and now also about you. Denying her something never ends will since she ends up forcing everything out if she has to. Her obsession is fearsome due to the sheer extent of it as she wants to know absolutely everything about you and will use what she has gathered to "court" you even more, or in others words put, to just leave you with no choice but to stay with her. She's going to be the one to take the wheel in this relationship too as she thinks that it's natural, especially if you're only a citizen and for that wouldn't know possibly as much as she does.

💐She shouldn't have any reason to be jealous and in most cases it's probably more the case that people are jealous of you when they see you with Hibana. She's undeniably a beauty and knows this too, she flaunts it in front of you all the time after all. That's specifically why she's going to deny all claims that she's one to be easily jealous because she feels like she has no reason to be. You know better though about her flaring streak of jealousy. The woman wants your attention pretty much all the time and it will be very hard for her to understand why you would want to spend time with someone else rather than him. She judges the people around you rather harshly because none of them are someone she would deem as special, it's not like she would ever see someone as good enough. She's acting like the proudest peacock in history too, a somewhat bratty and entitled one though.

💐She's manipulated her way through life quite often, she even exchanged information on her research to get her the position she's in today. Despite her princess-complex, Hibana is still a scientist and has shown herself to be a very intelligent tactician too. There are not many qualms she seems to have to use all of her influence to rid herself of someone that stands in the way of her and her darling. She's resolved to become a demon herself after all in order to get revenge on what was done to the sister in the Holy Sol Temple, believes that she has to fight evil with evil. That and her very apparent sadistic streak make her anything but pleasant if someone has officially irked her. She won't go as far as killing though as she doesn't see herself as a barbarian.

💐She keeps you by her side all the time, we've already talked about how she is the one with dominance and control in the relationship after all. The men working under her worship her so even if they're envy of your position as Hibana's lover, they know exactly what Hibana would do to them if she were to ever find out that they talk bad about you behind her back. When she's busy, a few of them always keep an eye on you. Whenever she isn't busy though, she has you tagging along wherever she goes. She's very clingy in that aspect as she won't let you out of her sight at all. Since she is so smothering, her darling barely gets any time alone at all but telling her that will only further motivate her. It's not like you don't want her attention and affection after all, you're just shy~

💐Trying wo wiggle somehow free from her very tight grip on you won't work as she's too obsessed and infatuated to let that happen. You shouldn't underestimate her connection and resources either since she has a considerable lot of influence. Her ire is most of the time not directed to you since her delusions keep her most of the time from seeing you as the true culprit. That said though, when she lashes out on you it will be anything but pleasant for you since she won't hold back with her words at all and target your insecurities specifically. The majority of her time, she rather spends gushing over you and doting on you although she expects to be worshipped for the way she treats you so well. She loves to be praised and worshipped, do that, set her in a good mood and she's ready to fulfill you a favor or two.
