Some days need the exigencies of a reprieve .. and the generosity of our Ef plays loud and clear on such occasions .. they are ever so considerate in their understanding .. rest well they say .. no issues ..

As age progresses , they say memory fails .. it does .. so as I rethink what transpired yesterday, a million thoughts and visuals speed past rapidly .. none of them making memory .. 🤪

So one kind colleague suggested sit on the edge of the bed at night before turning in and recollect all that you did the entire day .. good test of memory skills ..

I did not adhere last night .. 

Instead did the other more infused act - get to bed early , before 11-12 , get 6-7 hrs of sleep and the day works well the following ..

How y’all gonna have all those lines repeatedly emphasizing the peasants being “black as night” and the Beauxhommes being 4th-generation descendants of the French and the locals and justify doing a story explicitly set IN HAITI (“Jewel of the Antilles”) with an all-white cast?? Just because the Junior version intentionally makes no reference to the colorism angle to make the story more accessible to the children who’d be performing it.

Especially when The Little Mermaid, which OOTI is based on, is already a musical and RIGHT THERE??

☕+ the band's visit?

for slightly personal reasons i don't feel like getting into i do have a very soft spot for the story and its setting. but from a less sentimental perspective i think the band's visit is a really interesting musical and very refreshing in terms of recent new broadway shows. i'm sure there are still people salty about the 2018 tonys season but i do think the band's visit deserved all the recognitions it got -- namely score, book, direction, and orchestrations (tho ooti was also a strong competitor here). and obv best musical...

anyway i really like how subtle tbv is? it's a lot like come from away in story and themes, and even to some extent in the music with the way they incorporate the local folk music traditions and instruments into their scores. but unlike cfa, tbv doesn't have any, like, rousing show-stopping numbers. i mentioned this in my earlier post this evening how a lot of the music has a suspended, unresolved feeling to it; some of this has to do with the style (both jazz and folk/traditional music in the MENA doesn't necessarily follow the same system of tension-resolution and harmony that western classical music does) but also there are multiple songs that just repeat the same motif a lot without changing or developing it much (papi hears the ocean; itzik's lullaby) and multiple songs that end abruptly, like they've been cut off without resolution (waiting; it is what it is). and like, while i happen to in general enjoy MENA folk music, i also think this contributes a lot to the story tbv is telling and the way it tells that story. there aren't any big showy moments. it's subtle, it's personal, it's grounded. real life doesn't tie everything up in a neat bow, sometimes you're left wondering or trying to figure out what something means, you're left suspended in time or in memory or in harmony...anyway, it's a show that i had to grow to like. i didn't think the music was particularly memorable the first time i listened to the album (save for omar sharif, what a song...) and even when i saw it on tour i had a hard time putting my finger on what about it was, in fact, good. and yeah a lot of it comes down to just, like, taste and sentimentality for me but i also think it's a really well constructed piece of musical theater. and one that stands out against what's mainstream in the world of broadway this decade. and i always like a breath of fresh air
