#paton yewbeam
Be more like Paton Yewbeam. Have a crush on a delightful rare and ancient books shop owner. Only leave the house when it’s dark out, wearing sunglasses to avoid an Incident. Lock yourself in your room to mope and study history at the smallest inconvenience. Eat a solid block of cheese (by biting directly into it, no slicing) at one in the morning because you’re hungry and your weird great nephew is getting cryptic warnings from cats (again).

I'm so sorry I don't know if you still have cotrk thoughts but I just want to say I really enjoy your appreciation of the Bloor family. They have a lot going on. It's really tragic for them but it's so fun. I just needed to talk to Someone about them.
My sweet beautiful anon I am literally always having CotRK thoughts and ESPECIALLY thoughts about the Bloors. When I say I was not the target audience for this series I mean that even as a kid (I think 8-10 when first starting to read them) I was digging into things probably slightly too deep and loving how fucked up the relationships and backstories were. Middle grade books where almost every character has severe trauma and it’s up to the reader to decide how closely they want to look at it are some of my favorite works.
I’m also really into some of the themes of the series, like generational manipulation, hierarchy, bodily autonomy, etc. These are really interesting themes to explore in children’s fiction and I think it’s done fairly well in CotRK because Nimmo lets it be dark and grim, but also filtered through a child’s understanding. It would be a supremely different vibe as narrated by Paton, with the decades of trauma and history he has with each of the other characters and his much, much bleaker perspective on family and his own freedom. There’s some weird like. Biological determinism angles going on which I really don’t like (and also are internally inconsistent in some ways), and I think it’s fair to critique that but it should also be understood in the context as basically a staple of the genre and so not surprising.
The Bloors tie in with those above themes really well because Bartholomew, Harold, and Manfred are all defined by how they are/have been controlled by Ezekiel. They all only exist because of Ezekiel’s desire for power and endowed descendants. Bartholomew was only allowed to get away because he’d already produced a child for Ezekiel. Harold and Manfred have grown up entirely controlled by Ezekiel, essentially as his tools. They seem to be in agreement with him because of those biological determinism issues noted above, but I think the textual backstory given to both can’t be ignored. Harold lost both parents at a young age and was raised in an environment where being endowed was everything and he isn’t. Manfred is endowed and his endowment is a weapon that is immediately put to use even as a baby. Bart existed to make Harold, then Harold existed to make Manfred, then Manfred existed to be used for whatever Ezekiel wanted. They are fucked up for good reason.
I also am just obsessed with some of the timeline stuff like. Age-wise Paton and Harold have to have more backstory than we really ever get to see because Harold is only two years older than Paton and so they would have for sure known each other at Bloor’s academy. What the fuck was that like?? How did Paton even attend the academy with his endowment??? And what was the academy like for Harold, to attend the school with his name on it, probably be head boy and all, but not be allowed in the King’s Room? His disparaging comments about the endowed in the third book are Really Weird and certainly speak to a lot of unresolved feelings about the endowed/not being endowed.
Anyhoo I should get my hands on a used set of the books so I can just annotate them to shreds

Rereading (and of course live blogging) the series. If you don't wanna see this but don't wanna block me, I'll tag my liveblog posts with #dag liveblogs charlie bone.
In addition to parts I have Comments about, I'll also be noting every time a character's appearance is described. So far we have Charlie and Grandma Bone.
Tumblr media
Wait he doesn't turn 11. He TURNS 10??? He starts the series as a 9 year old??? We need a Benjamin Brown Protection Squad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Grandma Bone description. Also, I feel like the whole "after midnight magic" angle would have been cool to explore. WHY does it work better after midnight? When does it stop being "after midnight"? ARE endowments enhanced after midnight? Etc
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We need a Benjamin Brown Protection Squad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Descriptions.
And, since I'll be going in chapters, that's all for this post.

my stars i've just found a community of people revolving around a book series i've read since i was a kid. Charlie Bone books seemed to never quite catch on, but it was my Harry Potter growing up and to know i'm not the only one only makes me happier.

I would honestly love to see a Charlie Bone x Inkheart trilogy crossover.
I mean, both book series are set on Earth in the same time period, and both involve a kid who starts off being raised by a single parent because their other parent disappeared under mysterious circumstances when they were a toddler. And both kids find out that they have a magical ability.
They also both have a relative of the main character(s) who is very reclusive and loves books and ends up coming out of their shell a bit over the course of the series.
I do think Paton Yewbeam and Mo Folchart would get along pretty well. Same with Meggie and Charlie.
Also fun fact: if Inkheart is set in 2003, then Resa and Lyell both disappeared in the same year (1994).

Just thinking about how no one in Paton’s family acomidated his Endowment. How no one thought to help him to control it better, or to keep their home accessible to him. How kids like Tancred with uncontrollable Endowments got guidance of help from friends and/or family to live and control their powers, but Paton was just isolated to his room in darkness instead. Thinking about how he only started to go outside or participate in life in his 40s because that’s the first time in his life he tried to find tricks to control his powers.
Thinking about how Julia Ingledew would absolutely have candles and non-electric lighting in their home for him. How she would help him find tricks to control his power. How she would work with him to ensure he got to live the life he wanted. How he would finally find the kind of unconditional love he deserved.

Jenny Nimmo was always vague on the details in the Charlie Bone books so I’m going to operate under the assumption that Paton Yewbeam wears sweatpants bc I can
All we really know is that he hastily sends back ill-fitted clothes but sweats are forgiving and comfortable and this loser (affectionate) hides in his room not writing all day

I will forever be mad that there is not and likely never will be a TV series adaption of Children of the Red King, because IMAGINE THE FANDOM WE COULD HAVE!
- people who'd make fan theories and try to figure out what happened to Lyell
- people simping for Paton Yewbeam and shipping him and Julia so FRICKING much
- people hypothecizing what endowment they'd have and making UQuizzes
- video essays analyzing characters like Manfred and Asa and Dagbert and decyphering if they truly are "bad guys"
- people making edits of literally ALL the characters
- THE COSPLAYS
- THE FANFICS
- book readers trying not to spoil, but constantly looking for easter eggs in the show
- people who start reading the books after season 1 and are like "wow we're in for a wild ride!"
WE WERE FUCKING ROBBED!!!

You've been isekai'd to the fictional world of what you last played, read or watched (whatever was the most recent option)…what was it, would you survive and what would you do in it?
“Children of the Red King”-world and assuming this journey didn’t grant me an endowment or powers of any kind, I would immediately be getting a weapon and taking out Ezekiel Bloor. Item #1 on the agenda is Kill That Old Man. Item #2 is get Julia Ingledew and Vivian Vertigo together for the love of GOD they’re gay. Item #3 (this one may be tricky) rehabilitate and seduce Dr. Harold Bloor. Manfred would hate it on so many levels but I would be the healthiest relationship in his life like. Instantly. Even when he still hates and is actively trying to kill me, which is saying something. Item #4 get with Paton Yewbeam too fuck it. And Katya Kettle.
Now I have no clue how or if I could handle the Harken Badlock situation, so my primary hope is just that by killing Ezekiel early enough it would either be entirely avoided OR wouldn’t get as severe as it did in the original plot. But also don’t underestimate the power of just a fuckton of weapons and zero moral qualms about blowing that bitch up.

A sad thing about Lyell Bone is that he never really had a family who loved him unconditionally and accepted him until he married Amy and started his own family with her. And when he finally did have it, he lost it again after four years.
His dad died when Lyell was 1, and his mother was cold-hearted and mean and wouldn’t have been able to give him the emotional support he needed. He grew up surrounded by vipers (according to Bartholomew Bloor). Sure there was Paton, but Paton was unstable himself and unable to provide any kind of support.
So, until he met Amy, Lyell had no one who accepted him and loved him unconditionally. Which is sad, but even sadder is that he only got to spend four years being happy with Amy (and later their baby) before he was hypnotised and made to disappear.

Okay so I was telling my mom (who's autistic) about this dialogue from "Hidden King"-
Tumblr media
and how THIS dialogue hit me after FIVE BOOKS with the idea that Paton is, like, TOTALLY autistic.
And then my mom is like-
"Oh, honey, I knew the minute you told me he was eating cheese at 2 AM,"
