OKAY NOW I CAN POST MANFRED THOUGHTS.
I think part of what I find so compelling about him is that in a lot of other stories he would have the right ingredients to be redeemable, but with the whole Some People Are Born Evil shit that this series subscribes to, that just can’t happen.
His backstory is horrific, but it’s just portrayed as him being So Evil he was even a creepy evil kid. But that’s not how kids actually are. He was raised as a weapon and it is all he knows how to do. If Ezekiel wants that baby, Manfred gets him the baby. If Ezekiel wants that man to forget, Manfred makes him forget. If Ezekiel wants those people dead, Manfred makes them die. If Ezekiel says Manfred’s mother can’t leave, Manfred will make sure she can’t leave. And then Manfred has to go on with all of it- maintaining long term control over two people from the time he’s 9 years old, knowing his powers are waning, Ezekiel constantly asking for more, and that his own mother wants nothing more than to get away from him. I haven’t even touched on how messed up his relationship is with his dad (because I’ve touched on it elsewhere), but there’s that too.
And it’s like. Yeah he’s a Villain, it’s undeniable. He is basically structuring his life around his family’s goals of villainy. But he’s also just a kid. He thinks his classmates clothes are ridiculous but he also has to wear his hair just so. He’s a thespian. He bullies younger kids for missing their moms then sobs when his own gets away. He sleeps in on the weekend. He had one friend ever and treated him like shit. At least two girls had crushes on him. He never got to go to college.
He was a teenager who was raised in the worst environment and made to do terrible things his entire life and not a single adult ever gave him guidance to live any other way. And then he dies in a ridiculous way, and the only person in the world who might have cared apparently doesn’t. I’m going to be insane about him forever.

I did it. I finished Hidden King. I started rereading it months ago but just never finished it. God that ending is so satisfying but it does leave me with questions about Asa and why the change of heart. Manfred being chased by the Flames as leopards is hilarious and exactly what he deserved. I can just imagine Lyell, Amy and Charlie going home to number 9 and Lyell slamming the door open and being like 'mother I'm home!" But knowing Grizelda she's probably not there and is with her sisters because much like Ezekiel Bloor she is also a terrible person, a bad parent, a bad grandparent and an awful sister. Paton is the only valid yewbeam and I hope Emma's aunt gives him all the kisses.

Manfred bloor deserved it but even if he didn’t his leaps right before dying made the whole scene funnier. He fully did that to himself and it was hilarious
Lyell took a brave step toward Manfred.
"Dad, no!" cried Charlie, staring at the flames leaping from Manfred's fingers.
"Woooo!" shrilled Manfred, and the flames leaped higher. "Scaredy-cats!"
What happened next was so astounding, Charlie could hardly believe his eyes. For old Ezekiel came flying down the stairs. The wheels of his chair hit the treads once, twice, and then he was in the air. Too shocked to move, Manfred could only stare at the airborne thing in horror. When it landed on him, he emitted a single high-pitched scream that would echo in Charlie's head for years to come.
I wanted to check the scene, I don’t see any leaping but he really stood there in shock and got crushed… buddy…
but yeah, like, Manfred, Ezekiel, you lost guys, why keep fighting? Like give up cddsfx

Honestly the impression I always got from Dr. Bloor was that he wasn’t super into the villain stuff Ezekiel was, but went along it bc he raised him and all. Like I think he would have just liked to run a school and not be involved. I remember when he called the endowed students freaks, I think being raised by Ezekiel and having a powerful son like Manfred left him a little resentful, which could be interesting to explore. And at least Charlie told Bart he was as petty as the other Bloors
Yeah Dr Bloor never seemed that interested in Ezekiel’s evil plans. Especially considering that his reaction after Ezekiel and Manfred’s deaths was ‘I knew Blessed would do it one day’ and told Lyell and Paton that he wouldn’t give them any trouble now that Maybelle’s Will has been found. I do think he may have had some interest in the evil villain stuff, but as the series progressed he got tired of it and didn’t feel comfortable with committing literal murder or helping Count Harken.
Dr Bloor being resentful (and maybe also jealous?) of the endowed is a really interesting idea. It makes sense, especially if Ezekiel made him feel bad for not being endowed. It seems like the Yewbeams and Bloors really prize endowed people and I can see them making their unendowed family members feel inferior or inadequate because they don’t have an endowment.
I also wonder if Dr Bloor was resentful of Lyell as well. Lyell was the guy his father preferred over him. That had to hurt a lot. I love Bart but it’s so awful that he couldn’t accept his son for who he was and replaced him in a sense with Lyell, who is more like what Bart probably wanted in his son. Not to mention him essentially abandoning Harold to be raised by Ezekiel and the Yewbeams and not fighting for him. You really can’t blame Dr Bloor for not speaking to his father.

This might be cringe idk but as an autistic girl I have a headcanon that manfred is probably somewhere on the spectrum. My thoughts are A. His relationship with his mother may have been strained not only due to canon reasons but also because he was extremely sensitive to loud noises and personally I’ve always found orchestras jarring. He probably freaked out when she played the violin because the sharp sounds were simply too much. He also has such little control over his emotions I wouldn’t be surprised if some of his “tantrums” were closer o meltdowns. Also I noticed as the series went on, he can be really awkward. I think he was probably left totally floundering when his hypnotism faded because he didn’t have any actual social skills to fall back on and because his son could get whatever he wanted anyways, Dr. Bloor never took him to therapist to learn social skills. He just seems to not have very good control over his emotions, lacks self awareness, is overall awkward, and clearly hates noisiness. Also I headcanon that he survived at the end because what kind of ending is death for a teenager?? Wtf Jennie Nimo? Why did you kill a 19 year old for being bad?
cringe culture needs to die lmao
I'm neurotypical so I can't really add much to this particular headcanon tbh. But it's well written and thorough, so props for that.
I can go on all day about the ending, but I won't dfdfeveddfs. I think Jenny wanted Manfred and Ezekiel "out of the way", in a sense, where they won't interfere with the fluffy happy ending.

CharlieBone!AU
Alright. As a child, one of my absolutely favourite book series was Charlie Bone. My sister and I would pretend that we had special gifts while playing all the time, I read all of the books thrice (which I know isn’t a lot, but I’m not usually somebody who re-reads books at all, so that’s a Big Thing for me), one time in the span of about five or six days. (Could think neither straight nor in German after that.)
So, ATLA!CharlieBone!AU. Yes.
The Bloor Academy is probably run by Ozai. (It’s also not called “Bloor Academy”, but that doesn’t really matter right now.) Azulon is still alive and kicking, willing to murder children at the drop of a hat, just like Ezekiel. Iroh fucked off with Lu Ten after his wife’s death. Nobody’s entirely sure what the hell happened to Ursa, but she’s still (kind of) around, just not talked about.
Zuko and Azula grew up inside the school, but with very little contact to the outside world; probably homeschooled, too, until they’re old enough for the Academy.
They are both gifted, but just “control of fire” would be boring, so Azula has a gift similar to Uncle Paton’s, but with a better grip on it than him – she can control electricity. Zuko can technically control heat, but he’s not particularly good at it; he’s basically a walking mood ring. Rooms get cold when he’s sad or lonely, hot when he’s embarrassed, and that’s probably why he doesn’t have too many (any) friends. Constant swings in temperature aren’t pleasant. Nobody wants to sleep next to him in the dorm (if he sleeps in the dorm at all, as his family lives in the school).
If we’re keeping with the three houses, then both of them are definitely in the Theatre house.
Aang’s special gift is basically the Avatar State; he can call onto either his ancestors (a bit like Lysander) or his past lives (as in canon). He’s not a bender, so if and when he calls onto somebody, he has their powers at his disposal instead of the elements. (Unless one of them can control the elements. Kuruk could control sealife? Cool, Aang can do that now. Something like that.) His control over that power is shaky at best. Once he’s mastered it, he can manage all of his forebearer’s powers (super OP, basically), until then, it’s more like channeling one person at a time. (Or he’s just a medium. Or he can transform into birds/birdlike creatures like Emma.)
He’s raised by his grandfather Gyatso after the tragic death of his parents (at the hands of Zuko’s family, but shh, they don’t know that yet), and Appa is just the most ginormous dog you can find. Momo is a cat who likes to sleep on people’s faces. Aang, Zuko and Azula are (not so) distantly related via Gyatso and Roku, who are brothers instead of friends in this AU. Gyatso’s quite a bit younger than Roku, though. (And Roku’s already dead.)
Aang would probably have a hard time deciding between Art, Theatre and Music, because everything sounds great, but settle on art in the end, because his dad was an artist.
Neither Katara nor Sokka have a gift. At least that’s they think for the longest time. Katara is the student assigned to show Aang around when he transfers after his gift manifests (Gyatso didn’t initially want to send him to the Academy), and she bullies Sokka into looking after him in the “boys only” areas (the dorms), so they’re his first friends there.
They live with their Gran-Gran and their dad. Their mother was probably murdered by Zuko’s family or some allies of them, too, for Reasons. Maybe she saw something. Maybe she knew what they did to Aang’s parents. Doesn’t matter, I won’t write this, they killed her.
Katara’s gift manifests late, under a stressful situation; she can either heal or control blood (i.e. bloodbending). If it’s bloodbending, Hama (old friend of Gran-Gran’s, now either an ally of Azulon and Ozai or just wreaking havoc on her own) would probably try to get her hands on her, because she has the same gift, and it’s very rare. (Katara is much more powerful than Hama, though.)
Sokka gets a sword at some point in the story, and it’s some old-ass sword, prophesized to be wielded by a great warrior.
He picks Art, Katara picks Music.
Toph’s parents are a little less strict in this AU (they send her to school, after all), but still pretty overbearing. She mostly keeps to herself in the beginning; her and Zuko become friends before she befriends any of the other guys.
She’s still blind. (Stating this because she sometimes isn’t, in these (semi-)Modern AUs.)
Her gift is either her Seismic Sense or she can bring to life (so to speak) statues (like Erik). Leaning more towards the Seismic Sense, though. Otherwise, she has no control over earth or stone or anything, and the Seismic Sense works basically everywhere (wood vibrates, too), but she does still have to be barefoot. She isn’t even fully aware that she has a special gift until she talks to Zuko about how she gets around so well and he’s like: Dude, that’s not normal.
She’s in the Music house. (I don’t think they’re even called houses. Branch might fit better. But anyway.)
Suki does Theatre with Zuko and technically, she is his first friend, but they aren’t as close anymore when Aang starts school, since she befriended Katara and Sokka, who aren’t Zuko’s biggest fans initially.
She doesn’t have a gift, but she still kicks ass. Maybe she even still does tessenjutsu. Either way, you don’t wanna cross her. (that’s what fighting with fans is called, right? correct me if i’m wrong.)
I don’t know if Mai and Ty Lee would’ve gifts, but if they did, it would be hitting every target with every thrown object and seeing auras. (Could be just hard training and synethesia, though, which number one definitely is in canon; number two is a HC of mine.) Ty Lee does Theatre, too. Mai joins Sokka and Aang.

Pokémon AU for COTRK
I’m probably missing a few people but this is a good overview. And it was a lot of fun to do!
Claerwen is absolutely a Shiny Dustox (a white one). But she is Charlie Bone’s 2nd Pokémon. The first one is probably a Chikorita, as Charlie does try to be a calm protector.
Emma Tolly has a Swablu, a Tailow, and a Farfetch’d. Her aunt Julia has a Sylveon and a Grotle.
Olivia Vertigo has a Buneary & a Zorua.
Rembrandt has to be a Rattata. Once Billy is 10, he’ll be his.
Runner Bean is a Growlithe. He & Benjamin are super close.
The Gunn family has a deaf Persian. Fidelio has a Jigglypuff and an Illumise.
Gabriel Silk has a Ralts, a Togepi, and a Riolu. These choices are half because they suit his personality & powers, and half because I’m giving him some of my favorite Pokémon.
Tancred Torsson has a Castform, and I want to give him a baby Lugia. Especially if this AU means that the humans don’t have powers. In that case, his father has a grown Lugia, a Flygon, and a Gyarados.
Lysander Sage has a Chatot (so does Lauren) and he also has a Cubone, a Stufful, and an Ivysaur.
Asa Pike has a Mightyena & a Houndour.
Manfred Bloor has a Hypno, a Beheeyem, a Grumpig, & (later on) a Quilava.
Joshua Tilpin has an Abra and a Magnemite. I’m less sure which Pokémon the Branko twins & Dorcas would have.
Titania Tilpin has a Zoroark, a Mismagius, and a Gothorita.
Alice Angel has a Tsareena, a Ninetales, an Espeon, and a Gardevoir.
Blessed is an elderly Granbull. I did consider a Stoutland but Blessed isn’t meant to be fluffy. Ezekiel Bloor likely also has a Mismagius. Harold Bloor might have a Pokémon but more likely he leaves that to his relatives.
Bartholomew Bloor has a Jangmo-o, a Pidgeot, and an Absol. His adoptive daughter Naren has a Murkrow & a Sunflora.
Solomon is definitely a Dragonair. I’m still waffling on the Flames. Either they’re 3 Littens that can briefly insta-evolve into Incinearoars, or they’re a Vaporean, a Jolteon, & a Flareon that can shift into Suicune, Raikou, & Entei. The first option keeps the fiery theme but the second stresses their Legendary status. There are also rumors/legends of the Red King also having a Camerupt.
Queen Berenice is likely reincarnated into a Rapidash.
Lyell has a Flyon, a Wigglytuff, & a Salamance, all of which vanished when he did. They return to aid him against the Bloors.
Due to his seaside upbringing, Dagbert Endless already has 5 Pokémon. He has a Feebas, a Magikarp, a Froakie, a Mudkip, and a Tirtouga. It’d be during the near-drowning that Magikarp would evolve, and after Dagbert opts to join Charlie’s side that Feebas would.
Lord Grimwald has a Walrein, a Feraligatr, a Beartic, a Gyarados, a Sharpedo, and a Starmie.
Cook keeps her Shiny Clamperl secret, but she’s open about having a Kangaskhan and a Grovyle. Her sister also has a Shiny Clamperl along with an Empoleon and a Vaporeon.
Katya Kettle would have an Aggron and a Charizard. Later she adopts Solomon, of course.
Paton Yewbeam has a Luxray, a Decidueye, an Amaura, a Wartortle, and a Raichu.
I’m not sure what Pokémon Paton’s 4 sisters have. Venetia likely has a Liepard (Eric Shellhorn has a Geodude). Eustacia has an Exeggcute. Grizelda & Lucretia probably don’t bother with having Pokémon.
Amy Bone has a Leafeon. Maisie has a Delcatty.
Count Harken has a Lunatone, a Haunter, an Arbok, an Aerodactyl, and an Alakazam.

Condensed Version of Charlie Bone & the Time Twister
Charlie Bone goes back to Bloor’s Academy, where he deals with a cousin who mysterious showed up with a strange marble in his hand. Then he must try to save that cousin from their mutually insane cousin Ezekiel Bloor, who is still acting like a sissy.
Just so you know, this story did NOT rip off Harry Potter.
The end.

I'm so sorry I don't know if you still have cotrk thoughts but I just want to say I really enjoy your appreciation of the Bloor family. They have a lot going on. It's really tragic for them but it's so fun. I just needed to talk to Someone about them.
My sweet beautiful anon I am literally always having CotRK thoughts and ESPECIALLY thoughts about the Bloors. When I say I was not the target audience for this series I mean that even as a kid (I think 8-10 when first starting to read them) I was digging into things probably slightly too deep and loving how fucked up the relationships and backstories were. Middle grade books where almost every character has severe trauma and it’s up to the reader to decide how closely they want to look at it are some of my favorite works.
I’m also really into some of the themes of the series, like generational manipulation, hierarchy, bodily autonomy, etc. These are really interesting themes to explore in children’s fiction and I think it’s done fairly well in CotRK because Nimmo lets it be dark and grim, but also filtered through a child’s understanding. It would be a supremely different vibe as narrated by Paton, with the decades of trauma and history he has with each of the other characters and his much, much bleaker perspective on family and his own freedom. There’s some weird like. Biological determinism angles going on which I really don’t like (and also are internally inconsistent in some ways), and I think it’s fair to critique that but it should also be understood in the context as basically a staple of the genre and so not surprising.
The Bloors tie in with those above themes really well because Bartholomew, Harold, and Manfred are all defined by how they are/have been controlled by Ezekiel. They all only exist because of Ezekiel’s desire for power and endowed descendants. Bartholomew was only allowed to get away because he’d already produced a child for Ezekiel. Harold and Manfred have grown up entirely controlled by Ezekiel, essentially as his tools. They seem to be in agreement with him because of those biological determinism issues noted above, but I think the textual backstory given to both can’t be ignored. Harold lost both parents at a young age and was raised in an environment where being endowed was everything and he isn’t. Manfred is endowed and his endowment is a weapon that is immediately put to use even as a baby. Bart existed to make Harold, then Harold existed to make Manfred, then Manfred existed to be used for whatever Ezekiel wanted. They are fucked up for good reason.
I also am just obsessed with some of the timeline stuff like. Age-wise Paton and Harold have to have more backstory than we really ever get to see because Harold is only two years older than Paton and so they would have for sure known each other at Bloor’s academy. What the fuck was that like?? How did Paton even attend the academy with his endowment??? And what was the academy like for Harold, to attend the school with his name on it, probably be head boy and all, but not be allowed in the King’s Room? His disparaging comments about the endowed in the third book are Really Weird and certainly speak to a lot of unresolved feelings about the endowed/not being endowed.
Anyhoo I should get my hands on a used set of the books so I can just annotate them to shreds

I totally forgot that it the only word we have to go on for how Harold Bloor felt about growing up with Ezekiel was from fucking Grizelda Bone. Grizelda “sure you can kidnap my son if he doesn’t cooperate” Bone. Grizelda “my grandson only matters if he’s got magic powers” Bone.
This bitch has been involved in the attemped/successful “doing away with” of at least five members of her own family and we are just meant to take her word that this little kid was totally happy with believing both his parents were dead and being raised by her and his creepy grandfather? And Bartholomew actually does believe it??
Bart is strong contender for Worst Father in this series I swear to god

You've been isekai'd to the fictional world of what you last played, read or watched (whatever was the most recent option)…what was it, would you survive and what would you do in it?
“Children of the Red King”-world and assuming this journey didn’t grant me an endowment or powers of any kind, I would immediately be getting a weapon and taking out Ezekiel Bloor. Item #1 on the agenda is Kill That Old Man. Item #2 is get Julia Ingledew and Vivian Vertigo together for the love of GOD they’re gay. Item #3 (this one may be tricky) rehabilitate and seduce Dr. Harold Bloor. Manfred would hate it on so many levels but I would be the healthiest relationship in his life like. Instantly. Even when he still hates and is actively trying to kill me, which is saying something. Item #4 get with Paton Yewbeam too fuck it. And Katya Kettle.
Now I have no clue how or if I could handle the Harken Badlock situation, so my primary hope is just that by killing Ezekiel early enough it would either be entirely avoided OR wouldn’t get as severe as it did in the original plot. But also don’t underestimate the power of just a fuckton of weapons and zero moral qualms about blowing that bitch up.
