It's crazy to me the depths of the characterization that is quietly under the surface in "Dune".
Like the Reverend Mother Gaisu Helen Mohiam in the movie Dune - Part I going above and beyond to save Paul and Jessica's lives because Jessica is her favorite child and Paul is her grandson.
Just the quiet humanity of her rigging the fix against the Atrieides just enough to save her daughter and grandchild when she isn't supposed too.
I'm disappointed that in the movie they didn't get more into Mohiam and Jessica's backstory, about how much she loves Jessica and went out of her way to raise her own child against the Sisterhood's mandates. Or the fact that she is forever bitter against the Atreides for taking her little girl away from her, whether its the plan or not.
And how, at least in the movies, Jessica is raising Paul in the same manner that Mohiam raised her. With the cold and detached relationship of a mentor and bodyguard but with a love so powerful and darkly obsessive that it can destroy nearly 1,000 years of planning.
Fuck, dude, Paul even looks like Mohiam in the movies. Like Timothee and Charlotte Rampling look so much alike it's kind of scary. Which, for years, casual fans of the movies were like "Paul doesn't look anything like his parents" and I didn't want to spoil anything by saying "No, but if you look behind her veil, Paul looks like his grandma."
Just a thought as I'm listening to the audio book again while watching clips of Part I again.

I had been the author of unalterable evils, and I lived in daily fear lest the monster whom I had created should perpetrate some new wickedness.

Villeneuve in the first twenty minutes of Dune - Part II being like ...
"Guys ... GUYS! We were noted to death in the first one because people thought that Paul and Jessica were fucking and having a baby together! Okay? I had to cut out all your scenes together because all you gave was sexual tension! We can't have that in this one! Do not touch each other! Do not even act protective of one another when the Harkonen soldiers attack! right?! Paul and Jessica cannot have any sexual or romantic chemistry in this one! This is Paul and Chani's movie!"
"Got it Boss!"
*Proceeds to act like an expecting Husband and Wife for the rest of the movie.*
*Jessica becomes Paul's defacto Empress.*
*They talk through their the baby as a proxy like a sparing married couple.*
*Have their own private mind palace that is reserved for the most intimate emotionally linked lovers*
*Proceeds to give Paul and Chani's romantic context scenes from the book to Jessica and Paul.*
*Replace Leto II (Paul and Chani's first child) with Alia. And give Paul and Chani's parenting to Paul and Jessica.*
"Damn, Man ..."
-Denis Villeneuve (2024)
