Dan Rafael wrote a bit about the future of boxing in the US with Showtime potentially moving to Paramount+. It’s not overly optimistic but it’s a good primer for what is possibly coming.

PBC Looking For A New Broadcast Deal, Showtime Leaving Boxing After 2024 - Dan Rafael
By Brian Webber: PBC is looking for another broadcast deal for their fighters, with Showtime rumored to be leading boxing after 2024, says Dan Rafael. Rafael states that PBC’s contract with Showtime runs through 2024, and it’s not expected to be renewed. It’s believed that the boxing events that Showtime puts on their network in 2024 will be PPV only, which limits fans’ choices. Rafael says Al…

Undisputed Junior Middleweight Champion Charlo Challenges Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion Canelo Álvarez Headlining SHOWTIME PPV® Saturday, September 30 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas
HOUSTON, TX. – Undisputed junior middleweight world champion Jermell Charlo held a live-streamed media workout on Monday and previewed his upcoming showdown against undisputed super middleweight world champion Canelo Álvarez topping a SHOWTIME PPV Saturday, September 30, from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Canelo Promotions will present the Premier Boxing Champions Pay-Per-View.
Houston’s Charlo will look to earn undisputed status in a second weight class with a career-defining triumph over Canelo in the first showdown between two reigning male undisputed champions in the four-belt era.
Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Canelo Promotions and TGB Promotions, are available through AXS.com.
Charlo’s workout streamed live on the SHOWTIME Sports YouTube channel and SHOWTIME Boxing Facebook Page and was co-hosted by WWE Hall of Famer and radio personality Booker T and PBC announcer Ray Flores. Here is what Charlo, along with trainer Derrick James, had to say Monday from his training camp in Houston:
JERMELL CHARLO
“I’ve been doing this my whole life, and now it’s time to put on for my city. Put up or shut up and do what I do. I’m facing one of the best fighters in the world, you have to be excited for this moment.
“Now is the right time for this fight. We’re in our primes and at our best. I wanna shake the doubters off and prove to the world why I’m in this position. There’s a reason I made it this far. I’m gonna show what I’m made of. Everything I’ve done since I was eight years old, I’m putting it all on the line now.
“I’m not going to have to worry about losing too much weight. I’ve been sparring bigger guys for a very long time, and now it’s about bringing that same mindset that I have at 154 pounds and bringing it up with me to 168 pounds.
“Of course, there’s pressure. We have to be dominant and not just rely on a knockout. I have to beat him for 12 rounds. I have to do what I have to do in the ring to protect myself while still being vicious.
“This is a dream come true, just like winning undisputed, winning a world title and making it out the mud was. Once you get this far and see yourself prospering, you just want to keep bringing it. I’m staying focused on handling business.
“We’ve done so much sparring and conditioning. I’m working on the mental as well, because I know it’s not only about the physical. I’ve been training 14 weeks and making sure I do everything I need to.
“I just have to stay hungry. And I’ve been hungry. I would’ve fought Canelo years ago, and it probably wouldn’t have been as big as it is now. But I’m not too focused on being in the ring with Canelo, I’m just hungry. I want to win this fight for my city.
“If I accomplish this massive goal, it’ll be hard to top. I’ll be in the record book with the greats of boxing for a long time.
“I’m so dialed in as far as my team and everyone around me. I just need to get in the ring and do what I have to do.”
DERRICK JAMES, Charlo’s Trainer
“Having two undisputed championships at the same time would be amazing. It would be historic for Jermell.
“It’s gonna be back and forth early. Canelo has to impose his will, and Jermell has to show him who he is. You have to stop him from being his great self.
“Jermell’s advantage is actually his size. You have to maximize that advantage. It’s about what Jermell is able to do. He doesn’t have to become the guy, he has to be the guy.
“You win the fight in the gym. You’re not pulling a rabbit out of your hat. You have to go in the ring having done it the right way.”

Post-AGT Appearance 1237: The Mike and Diane Show WAVY 95.1 fm March 10
The last of my songs would have dropped out of the top 100 early in February.
The cops in Tennessee might have been tried before Ford, so he would have hastily retired from his judgeship.
Phillip would have been released from the hospital February 6.  A real actor would be pretending to be him in a Nevada rehabilitation clinic.  That way we could get the most realistic estimate of his date of release.
I would have started 14 days of a makeup Arizona tour February 13.  The first week would go well.  I would be healthier than I would have been in 2 years, performing as all active characters and singing.  The only warmup is videos and past songs playing.  Then just before showtime February 19 I would learn that my first cousin in Michigan had passed away.  Since this was expected my agent would have been with me on the tour.  He would force me to continue the tour, including both acts that afternoon.  They would not go well.  The second week I would perform only as Norbert, so crying and sniffing would seem part of the act.  Even so no one would leave happy.
Several people who died since my last post would have been in the top 100 suspects, including former Pakistan President Pervez Musharaff.  I would have posted comments about some of them but no one would quote them on tv or radio until Robert Blake died last Thursday. Blake would have started at 28, peaked at 13 in 2017 and died 32nd. Since the Colbert Show was not on Friday I would not be able to wait.  My post would go on all participating websites simultaneously about 9:45 am Friday.  The first to quote me would be Mike and Diane on WAVY and other stations in his birth state New Jersey a few minutes later.
Diane: Welcome back and stop the presses we have an announcement.
Mike: Oh boy.
Diane, As you all know. movie star Robert Blake, star of Baretta, passed away last night at 89.  Some are happy, some are sad and some are wondering...
Mike: I can’t wait for this.
Diane: Was he the mystery last name on Phillip’s sick list?
Mike: Oh, no, not that again.
Diane: Phil Cole was on America’s got Talent several years back and he still has the running gag about the mystery person who makes him sick.  Is it Robert Blake, the man who killed his wife.
Mike: That’s a good reason to get sick every time you hear his name.
Diane: O. J. Simpson is on the list, and not because he advertised Hertz.
Mike: So, do we need a drum roll?
Diane: No, the answer is: No.  I’ll read the quote.
PBC: The whole team drank a toast in celebration of the death of Robert Blake, but he is not the last name on Phillip’s list.
Mike: So I guess all eyes are on Robert Wagner now.
Diane: That’s still my guess, always was.

Gervonta Davis, Ryan Garcia, and the battle to be 'boxing's new face'
THAT one of the recurring themes of the Gervonta Davis-Ryan Garcia fight week not only resonated but is likely to continue to do so over the coming months and potentially years is the most effective demonstration of what, on Saturday night in Las Vegas, is at stake. There is little question that broadcasters Showtime and promoters PBC had ensured that both Leonard Ellerbe and Oscar De La Hoya,…

Week 4 - Tim Tzuyu VS Terrel Gausha
This week’s analysis is on the press conference and the additional publicity surrounding the upcoming fight between Tim Tszyu and the American Terrel Gausha on Sunday March 27th at The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The campaign was predominately carried by the two attending a pre-fight press conference and weigh-in, hyping up the fight by evaluating their respective chances of victory and throwing barbs at each other before they throw jabs on the 27th.
There are a number of groups working together to promote the fight and subsequently the main card, in order to raise the number of Pay-Per-View buys and/or streaming subscriptions.
In the United States, the PBC (Premier Boxing Champions) is an organisation that broadcasts live boxing events to American television screens. The PBC airs these boxing events across channels such as Showtime (SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING), Fox and all its subsidiaries (FS1, FOX Deportes etc.).
From an Australian broadcasting aspect, the main presenters are Foxtel, plus its sports streaming service Kayo Sports, in addition to the Pay-Per-View service, Main Event. These are the primary bodies that will be giving boxing fans the opportunity to view the fight across the country.
Ultimately the fighters themselves are key leaders of the campaign; it’s their job to to get as many people as possible to want to watch the fight. They must use every opportunity in front of camera to insult their opponent whilst touting their own abilities. The conflict between the two should create an aura of anticipation amongst fans, giving them no other option by to pay to watch the fight, therefore creating revenue.
Tumblr media
Poster promoting the fight between the two world title contenders.
Promoting a combat sports main card requires the use of a great deal of PR tools in an attempt to get as many purchases as possible. The main tool that is used amongst all boxing events is a press conference. Getting the two fighters on one stage (and sometimes face-to
face) allows the media to ask the fighters questions about the upcoming bout. This can create some tension between the two fighters and possibly lead to a photo opportunity of the two fighters needing to be separated by security, further raising excitement for the fight.
As main event promotions go, the press conference between Tszyu and Gausha was quite underwhelming. The two fighters didn’t show much animosity towards each other and was fairly ‘vanilla’ in their responses to questions posed by the media. The cliched answers delivered by Tim Tszyu such as “taking things one step at a time” and “actions speak louder than words” leave something to be desired for viewers as the lack of charisma doesn’t present the ‘do or die’ nature of combat sports, but rather that this is just another day for Tszyu and there’s no reason for the viewer to get excited. However, the heavy lifting by the marketing team surrounding the fight have done a good job in elevating anticipation for the event. Highlighting that this will be the debut fight in the US for Tszyu conveys to the audience that its pivotal for Tszyu to have a decent performance to ensure he breaks into the new and sizeable market that is the United States.
The mention of Tszyu’s undefeated Professional record (20-0-0, 15KO’s) alongside Gausha being a former US Olympian puts the elite skill level of the two to the forefront of the audience’s mind, raising their expectations to that of a flawless contest between two of the cleanest competitors in the world of boxing. The phrase “world title eliminator” adds another layer of anticipation; raising the level of importance of the fight, expressing that a win for either fighter will result in an opportunity to compete for one of the biggest prizes in their competition, a world championship.
