Chapter 1086: Connecting the Dots

It’s been a few chapters since my last write-up, but I couldn’t resist the lore of this chapter.

First things first: the cover page is absolutely adorable.

I especially love Luffy’s and Chopper’s reflections in the puddle. So cute.

Okay, onto the chapter itself. Reverie comes to an end with most attendees none of the wiser of the malicious goings on right under their noses.

We see various parties getting away from Mariejois by stowing away. This panel hit me particularly hard:

Sabo is visibly broken up about witnessing Cobra’s death, which is at odds with his reaction back in chapter 1083:

Honestly, it’s a relief to see that Sabo was affected by Cobra’s death since he seems so cold talking about the death of someone both the Revs and audiences knew to be a good man. 

Speaking of Sabo, the Gorosei’s discussion about him is quite interesting.

They use the phrase “checkered fate,” which we’ve seen used repeatedly to describe those who carry the D, including

It also feels related to the flashback in 1085:

Sabo seems to be influenced by the Will of D. as much as any of the Ds that surround him.

Meanwhile, Imu orders the destruction of Lulusia using a Vegapunk invention called Mother Flame. 

This is interesting because we saw in the MADS cover story how Vegapunk was focused on peaceful inventions. He talks about creating an energy source that will be accessible to everyone--thus eliminating conflicts over natural resources.

Perhaps Mother Flame is the result of that research. 

Many of us theorized that Uranus was used to wipe out Lulusia, but Dragon argues that if the WG had an Ancient Weapon, why wait until now to use it?

What if, like the mecha that is defunct in Egghead, Uranus needed a power source? And Vegapunk’s research into energy allowed them to finally power up the Ancient Weapon?

That would also fit the parallels between Vegapunk and Einstein, as Einstein’s work laid the foundation for the creation of nuclear weapons despite his pacifist tendencies.

So, Imu orders the destruction of Lulusia because it’s nearby, and the other Gorosei are... fine with it. They even try to justify it.

It’s cold and cruel.

We also get names and see the planet theme continuing with Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Mars, and Saturn from left to right. Interesting that they are also called “Warrior Gods.”

Imu is also focused on retrieving Vivi, who we now know is a D.

What does Imu want with Vivi specifically? Mysteries to chew on!

Meanwhile, MORE SEPAPHIM.

Finally, the Doffyphim! Crocophim looks almost sad, which is interesting.

So, we’ve seen Seraphim for all the original Warlords, right? So, are we getting them for any of the others? Blackbeard? Law? Buggy? Weevil? Honestly, I’ll be very surprised if we don’t see a Law Seraphim since Law’s not allowed to have nice things and the importance of the Ope Ope no Mi is directly referenced in this chapter.

We get a bit more insight into Imu thanks to Iva:

Which ties back to Cobra saying he recognized the name. Now we have a family name: Nerona. My first thought was Nero, who was Emperor of Rome at the time of the Great Fire of Rome, which destroyed a large portion of the city. (Remember, Vegapunk’s potential energy source was called Mother Flame.)

Iva’s line about “the world we know today was created 800 years ago” brings me back to this panel from earlier in the chapter:

Particularly Mars’ comment in the middle about “The world moves at the will of the creator.” This seems to imply that Imu was one of the founders of the World Government--making him a creator of the world as we know it today.

Of course, that leads to the question of how he could be alive for 800 years. Iva’s out there like

connecting all the dots like the rest of us.

It’s long been theorized that there had to be someone in the series who had the Perpetual Youth Surgery performed on them, and Imu seems to be the best candidate. 

There have actually been multiple mentions of the immortality operation recently, as if to remind us that Law’s fruit can do that. Remember what Blackbeard said after defeating Law? 

So yes, the fact that Law got away from this encounter matters because a) he’s a D., and b) his fruit is coming into play again.

So, theory time. I know a lot of people worry about Law using the Perpetual Youth Surgery on Luffy, but I don’t think that will happen; among many reasons, Luffy wouldn’t want it, even if Law offered. 

However, if Imu has had that surgery and is now immortal, there needs to be a way to defeat him. What better way than the current user of the Ope Ope no Mi reversing the operation and making him mortal again?

Okay, this has gone way longer than I planned, so final thing:

So, this is interesting considering what we learned about Shanks from Film Red and its accompanying media. Shanks, we’re led to believe, is a Figarland, so this is likely a relative--father? Grandfather? Uncle? (Also, the hair that looks like a crescent moon? Amazing.)

Moreover, he is the former king of God Valley, which is where Roger’s crew found baby Shanks in a chest and adopted him. That God Valley flashback is going to be mind-blowing, isn’t it?

It’s also noteworthy that Figarland says, “Anyone who protects scum is lower than the scum they protect” while Shanks has a notoriously weak fleet because he protects them.

Finally, RIP Mjosgard. It’s sad that he was able to better himself and ended up executed as a result of those morals.

I'm really tired. I just transferred to a new university to study psychology and it has been the actual worst experience in every aspect. The two biggest issues are the fact that I am autistic and thusly have issues making friends, and that I have this god-awful professor in my counseling class.

This professor is OFF his rocker. He actively talks about the secret society he is in, trying to teach us preposterous things that have no place in that class or even the school at all. I could write a novel about every problematic thing he has said, but my most major issue with him is how he views and treats women, and continuously brings sexual topics up when they have no relevance to the course material.

He has disrespected his wife over the phone in the middle of class and then tried to justify his behavior using his gender, spoken extensively about what features men don't like on women such as makeup or plastic surgery. He says "natural" women are "healthy" (well-endowed) in either the chest or behind but not both, and are uneven in the chest. He specifically targeted my classmate, who was the only one wearing false eyelashes, to say that men don't like that either.

Another time he told us that women run the world because men are obsessed with us, that we are not oppressed at all, yet he turns around and tells us how women in the corporate world go commando under their skirts and sleep around to work up the corporate ladder. He says this in a way that puts women to shame for this as well.

This week, though, was completely different. His departure from the course material started with the extremely invasive question, "what do you remember about your transition to adolescence?" Again targeting that very same classmate. I blink and he is now telling us that the male experience during puberty is far worse than what women experience, basically saying that—excuse my bluntness—getting a boner in class is much worse than anything women go through, even turning to our singular male classmate for backup on this.

He also tries to tell us that its so so bad for boys because the girls actively try to touch them or make them "psychologically disturbed," as he worded so decoratively. What adolescent girl wants anything to do with that when she's going through her own problems? Since when were young girls going out of their way to trouble boys like this? I was actively trying to deter boys during this time.

I and the other two women in my class were disputing all of this, until our professor finally said, "I will just let that go over y'all heads cause you will never understand the male experience," to which I, shaking with rage, replied, "—and vice versa."

My mental health has been suffering severely, and much worse since this happened Monday. I had never felt such pure, primordial rage towards someone before. This man makes me feel not only objectified but also demonized. Last night was my breaking point, working on one of his assignments. I experienced the most intense mental breakdown of my life so far, and afterwards spent all but two hours of the night trying to cram the project that was due today.

I guess my point is that I would report him, but my school makes it nigh impossible to do so. I'm perpetually exhausted and I do not know if I can make it through the last two weeks of class. I want so badly to be petty and spiteful to his face, but for the most part I've controlled it.

I don't really know what I'm looking for by doing this. I guess I just want to know what you think? Apologies for the length of my message.

Such is the mentality I encountered often in my youth by Hylian men, and women, toward my sisters. They would lust after my sisters based on their attire and physique, while also attempting to demonize them and ostracize them for the exact same reasons.

In short, men are cowards who carry the darkest urges shamelessly, but are too prideful to admit the problem within themselves. Instead, the vilify women for their own indiscretions.

They will openly mock my Gerudo for their appearance, while desiring nothing more than to own their flesh in the most disturbing of ways.

This professor seems like a prime example of the Hylian males I encountered. But if this is the case, then so too is his weakness.

He has likely been thwarted in his past in his attempts to procure a mate to his liking, and due to his pride, he believes it is all of womanhood to blame, and not himself.

This one he singles out is likely similar to those he desired but could never obtain in his youth. As such, he blames all others for his own shortcomings.

Likely too with his mate. I would assume her physique does not fit the desires he now feels entitled to, and as such he makes her the target of his criticism.

But through all of this, he reveals a second weakness.

Fear.

He fears that which he cannot control, and women as a whole seem out of his grasp. Every slight, every jab, and every assault from his lips is but proof that he is afraid of what women are capable.

In the midst of a Gerudo warrior, this professor of yours would crumble like kindling to a flame.

Take solace in the knowledge that you are superior to this worm, for you are what he can never have.

In an effort to promote her anti-trans “Protect Children’s Innocence Act,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) hurled insults at a mother who has spent years fighting for the right to affirm her trans daughter’s identity. Greene reposted an article from the far-right Dallas Express News — a publication the Texas Observer has described as a “‘pink slime’ media site that launders conservative propaganda” — that claimed Anne Georgulas could soon gain the right to “castrate” her daughter without her ex-husband Jeff Younger’s permission “because she believes her son is transgender.” Greene posted in response that her bill would “stop this evil mentally ill mother from castrating her son.”

“Over 70% of Americans agree with my bill. There’s no excuse as to why my bill has not moved,” Greene added. She did not share where the 70 percent stat came from. The story in the Dallas Express News is about well-known anti-trans activist Jeff Younger — who has been engaged in years of legal battles with Georgulas over how to raise their trans daughter, Luna, whom he consistently misgenders and deadnames. [...] According to the Dallas Express, Georgulas has since moved with her two children to California, where she will have a hearing on April 25 likely regarding access to best-practice gender-affirming care for Luna based on her age, though the far-right publication claims Georgulas is seeking permission to “castrate” her. (Trans youth almost never undergo gender-affirming surgery). In 2022, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed a bill protecting transgender youth and their families fleeing prosecution from states that criminalize gender-affirming care, making the state a sanctuary for trans kids and their families.

[...] Luna’s story has been used by the conservative media over the years to promote the idea that children are being forced by parents to transition medically. The claim that Younger is trying to “save” his child from hormones and surgery, unlikely treatments for a child her age, continues to be perpetuated. Greene’s “Protect Children’s Innocence Act” would make it a Class C felony to provide gender-affirming care to trans minors, make it more difficult for trans adults to access gender-affirming care by banning some health care programs from covering it, and ban medical schools from teaching about gender-affirming care.

In November, Greene lied during testimony in the House when she claimed that there are “many young people that made the tragic mistakes of having mastectomies, having castrations done to them, having genital mutilation surgeries when they were still in their early, uh, teens, um, maybe even before they were teenagers.” As stated above, genital gender-affirming surgery is not performed on minors in the U.S., much less on prepubescent children. Some older teens can sometimes get mastectomies if they meet stringent requirements, but that’s rare. Gender-affirming care for pre-pubescent children involves allowing them to wear the kinds of clothes that they want, calling them by a name and pronouns that affirm their gender identities, and generally supporting their self-expression. Puberty blockers — which have been shown to reduce lifelong suicide risk among trans people — are prescribed after the onset of puberty, and hormone replacement therapy is an option for some trans teens who are a bit older.

Today on “overthinking this fictional pirate universe”:

The existence of things like the SMILE fruits, as well as the artificial devil fruit Vegapunk made based on Kaido’s devil fruit implies a few very interesting things about said devil fruits and their effects on people’s bodies.

The basic explanation we get on how devil fruits work is that they affect a person's “Lineage Factor,” which seems to be the in-universe equivalent of DNA, or at the very least is something that is related to or integral to a person's genetics. Vegapunk was able to reverse-engineer Kaido’s devil fruit by using a sample of his Lineage Factor, and while we know he deemed it a failure, Momo’s use of it so far implies that it’s otherwise a pretty damn effective copy. Caesar’s SAD formula seems to be an imperfect application of that, but still sure does a heck of a lot to the body of anyone who consumes the fruit it’s made with, whether or not they fail.

This suggests that there are identifiable markers that scientists can see in the genetics of people who have eaten a devil fruit, which also implies that every devil fruit user has a quantifiable biological alteration to their bodies as a result. And we know the Lineage Factor can be affected in other ways too; Vinsmoke Judge altered those of his kids directly through surgery. But most of our in-series examples do come from devil fruits or their knock-off counterparts.

This is most obviously seen in Zoan and Logia users—Zoan devil fruit eaters have the explicit ability to alter their bodies into different degrees of an animal. Logia devil fruit eaters do more or less the same, but instead of say, altering a base human to a base cat, or somewhere in between, it’s more altering the chemical composition of a base human into a different state of matter.

Predictably, it gets weird when we get to the Paramecia fruits, because Paramecia fruits are weird. A lot of them still fit the category of “weird, but plausible in a fantastic sort of way,” like all the fruits that let people generate a substance, and even the ones like Baby 5’s, where she becomes complex weaponry, are still edging on the side of that line.

But then you get the real outliers, like Sugar’s fruit. The eternal youth side effect is the easy part to explain—aging is a biological process—but how do you quantify the toy effect and the memory wiping? Especially the memory wiping, because it affects other people, not her target, and works on a mental, rather than a physical level. What about Belo Betty’s fruit, or Tsuru’s, both of which seem to have some level of brainwashing/alteration of a mental state effect on their targets? What can change about your body that allows you to affect the brain chemistry of other people?

Or hell, Law’s fruit. To the outside observer he’s essentially doing magic; a wave of his hands and things just happen. Sure, there’s a base logic to how it works, but it’s a base logic that is inherently fantastical. Did eating the fruit affect his brain? Is that why he can keep track of everything that exists in his Room—up to and including things like raindrops and snowflakes—without suffering a mental breakdown? Human brains aren’t meant to multitask like that. That’s even before we get to the fact that the Ope Ope no Mi is one of the few devil fruits that seems to confirm the soul as a quantifiable force, or the Perpetual Youth Surgery.

Specific concerns about confusing fruit aside, what can you do with these genetic effects aside from attempt to replicate them? If so desired, could a sufficiently skilled geneticist simply remove a devil fruit eater’s ability entirely? Is that a potential avenue for curing failed SMILE users? It’s concerning if so; of the people we’ve seen or heard messing with genetics in-universe, we’ve got Judge, Queen, Caesar and Vegapunk. Those first three are legit villains, even if Caesar is highly bullyable, and Vegapunk is a straight up mystery working for the marines. Chopper and Law are very good doctors, but I don’t know if this is quite their wheelhouse, even if Law did have access to all the notes he got to snoop into on Punk Hazard.

I dunno; I don’t think it’s a subject we’re likely to delve too deeply into in the series proper, unless for some reason it becomes incredibly story relevant. That said, it is certainly a fun brain worm to roll around, and fun fodder for fic ideas in the future.

One of the most terrible things about the makeup industry and skincare and plastic surgery industry is what it brings out in women.

For a long time I was convinced that women are victims of this kind of stuff, and that’s still very true to a certain degree - especially young questionable girls. As for older women, I don’t think so. I see these videos on Instagram of these grown women willingly altering their faces on a daily basis while knowing that it’s harmful and I’m like…yeah at some point I can’t just keep feeling bad for all of these women cause a lot of them are not victims. They just perpetuate this kind of nonsense. They can willingly stop at any time and they won’t.

I will watch videos where they complain about having to do all this stuff like makeup, hair, nails, botox, etc while their boyfriends just put on pants to go out yet they’ll still continue to do it and they even label it as a “how women get ready” vs “how men get ready” type of thing. No, this is absolutely not how I get ready as a woman. Stop speaking for women. Stop posting these complete bullshit videos. If you don’t like wasting time putting on makeup THEN STOP.

But of course they won’t stop. These are the people that are funding these industries. These women are self obsessed idiots. Nothing is more important to them than looking good. Then they’ll pull the “well it’s not socially acceptable in society for women to not wear makeup” UM. It absolutely is. I have NEVER EVER been told as a woman that I should wear makeup. Nobody has given me a hard time about this. Nobody has told me to consider botox except for these influencers and women on IG and nobody has told me to apply sunscreen inside my own house in order to preserve my youthful skin EXCEPT for these instagram women.

Then they want to come off as victims of the patriarchy and victims of the makeup industry but at some point, women need to take accountability for their own actions, and many of these women even see the time wasted on beauty regimens and STILL REFUSE TO STOP. I have no sympathy for these women. They know exactly what they’re doing. They know that their audience is full of young impressionable girls. They know that they are being watched and learned from and looked up to. And they don’t give a single damn either - as long as they’re pretty, youthful, and have money.
