Venice, Italy. June 2014. I was actually surprised that the city floods.

I try not to edit any of my pictures because I like the simple and natural kind of photography but while I was playing around this one was just too cool. /// June 9, 2018

Spring Cherry Blossom

Cherry blossom in spring during a warm and sunny start to the year 2020. Bottom right: Cherry blossom through a lens ball distorting the perspective and colours.

‘Bastard Chairs’, photgrpahy by Micheal Wolf. These chairs are a great reminder that we can make stunning, interesting and unconventional designs using only what we have whilst still adding our personal artistic touches.
“The chairs photographed in this series have been patched up, reconfigured, often repaired dozens of times. they provide a graphic illustration of china’s thriftiness and its devotion to maximizing productivity. however wolf’s attraction to these objects is not only driven by their social significance, but also by the unintentional “beauty inherent in used objects.” his images of these chairs, created purely to meet the functional need of sitting, celebrate the intelligence of their design and the beauty of their patina. the owners of these chairs do not appear and yet their presence is palpable in this extraordinary array of customized objects, each chair reflecting some aspect of its owner’s personality.” - MichealWolfPhotography
Edit from 23/03/2022 After some thought, I realised I like the sentimentality of these chairs in Hong Kong. They are constructed from this collection of found or owned objects put to new use, or purposely seeked out and used to form or fix these chairs. I think that the white chair leaning on the wall (bottom right image) is an almost futile attempt to try and keep that chair standing, but it makes a person wonder why would someone even try to hold it together when it is so clearly falling apart? Is it out of necessity? Is it out of sentimentality? Was it fixed and then became worse afterwards? Who knows!? But it is a lot of fun to think about.  I for one, find it very hard to throw the scrap pieces of paper cutting left over from a project where I used gifted paper from a friend. “What if I need it for something else?”, I’ll ask myself. So I find it really relatable and enjoy the handmade and sentimentality of the chairs.

I looked at this book as I wanted to look into how I could make a book show the values of film photgrpahy - time, experience and physicality. This was good to look at, it makes a statement and there aren’t a lot of them made. This makes me want to use the physical slides. The physicality of them makes it invaluable - no one else can have the exact book. its precious. like film photography is - you can just go back and delete the shot.
