"He's not my anything," Wylan interrupted. Jesper rubbed his mouth. Wylan was crossing some serious lines here. "And-And you said I would be safe down here. You promised me-"

"I never promised you anything, Wylan." Now it was Kaz who was interrupting and if Jesper strained, he could hear the thump of Kaz's cane. "I said you could have protection and you would have to sort out the rest. I get your skills and your bombs, you get what moderate protection my name can offer you. That's all."

"So you're just going to let him take me back, then? If it comes to that." Wylan sounded brave enough but someone who knew him - like Jesper - could hear the waver in his voice.

"And waste a perfectly good demo man?" Kaz asked sarcastically. "If it comes to that, I'll fight. Is that what you wanted to hear?"

"I want to hear that I won't go back," Wylan snapped. What in any Saint's name was going on? "I can't go back, you understand? I can't, he'll kill me. And I know that 'in the Barrel' you're weak if you can't protect yourself from dying but I'm not from the Barrel, am I? I wasn't born in the harbour like you."

"You're not weak, Wylan," Kaz said sharply. "You're a gamble. /My/ gamble. And, unlike your boyfriend, I don't gamble often, I'm not a fan of it. So I don't gamble on faulty or weak cards. And I don't let my bets fall through easily."

Jesper had never heard such kind and confusing words from Kaz.
