Donald Trump's playbook…
After watching the "Donald Trump's Playbook: Lessons for 2024 election | Full Documentary Analysing" on YouTube I had to type this up. Donald Trump's political playbook can provide insights into his strategies and communication style. It's important to note that political approaches can be subjective, and opinions on Trump's tactics may vary. Here are some key lessons that observers have drawn from his political playbook:
Effective Use of Social Media:
Trump utilized Twitter extensively to connect directly with his base and make policy announcements.
His tweets often had a straightforward and unfiltered style, resonating with a certain segment of the population.
Simple and Memorable Messaging:
Trump employed slogans like "Make America Great Again" and "America First," which were easy to remember and encapsulated his political agenda.
His messaging often focused on key themes, making it accessible to a broad audience.
Populist Appeals:
Trump positioned himself as an outsider, tapping into anti-establishment sentiments and positioning himself as a voice for the "forgotten" or "ignored" Americans.
He often spoke in a language that resonated with working-class voters, emphasizing economic issues and job creation.
Media Manipulation:
Trump was adept at generating media attention, both positive and negative, which kept him in the public eye.
Controversial statements and actions were used strategically to dominate news cycles.
Attacking Opponents:
Trump was known for employing strong, sometimes provocative language against his political opponents, both within and outside his party.
Personal attacks and nicknames were often used to undermine rivals.
Adaptability:
Trump demonstrated adaptability by adjusting his positions on certain issues based on the political climate and his audience.
This flexibility allowed him to appeal to a diverse range of voters.
Visual Branding:
Trump's campaign and presidency had a distinct visual brand, with his signature red hats and bold campaign materials contributing to a strong and recognizable identity.
Rally and Event Strategy:
Trump held large rallies throughout his campaigns and presidency, creating a sense of enthusiasm and unity among his supporters.
These events served as a platform for him to communicate directly with his base.
Nationalism and "America First" Policy:
Trump's "America First" approach resonated with voters who felt that the country's interests were not being prioritized in global affairs.
Challenging Norms:
Trump often challenged established norms, both in terms of political behavior and policy decisions, presenting himself as a disruptor.
It's crucial to approach these lessons with a critical mindset, as opinions on Trump's political approach differ significantly. Additionally, political strategies that work for one individual may not necessarily be effective for others.

How reality tv has impacted the net-based public sphere through political communication (w4) :
Tumblr media
“The internet provides a public space whereby, this everyday-life politicalisation can occur bottom up.” (Graham, Hajru, 2011)
Political talk in today's society is a conversation that addresses a more “lifestyle-base approach to politics,” (Graham, Hajru, 2011) which we see being adopted into communicative public spheres. Political talk in relation to the public sphere welcomes discussion allowing others to connect and discuss their opinions on society through social media.
Net based researchers have discovered that the public sphere has a strong focus on entertainment and reality tv. Reality tv shows such as, Big Brother, Wife Swap and Married at first sight are examples of reality tv shows that provoke ideas surrounding the fact that “communication [has] a political dimensions.” (Van Zoonen, 2005). With reality tv having such an influential impact on its audience, these members are typically considered as active participants that like to engage freely in a communicative public sphere. Active audience can initiate these intellectual and informed discussions surrounding political talk in the net-based public sphere whether they’d like to be anonymous or not.
A popular way people tend to communicate ‘politics’ is through hashtags on social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. #MAFS is the abbreviation of well known reality tv show, ‘married at first sight’. This hashtag creates a public sphere for those to engage in an online discussion with others in the ‘community’ who want to share their opinions. Reality tv shows such as MAFS, encourages political talk and evokes strong ideas and questions surrounding bullying, gender identity, business and public image. In a more positive light reality tv has “offered space for the representation of populations with limited public voice, challenging viewer prejudices… ” (Klein, 2021) this has definitely helped audiences whom may be apart of minorities to speak up, and become involve in political communication in the online forums.

Social Media… The Downfall of Democracy
Today we discussed how essential it is that humans are active participants in their political communities and that by communicating to those around you, you are preserving our democracy as we know it today. By participating in our modern democracy, here in the United States, we are able to continue to govern ourselves rather than be governed by some out of touch ruler. Now, depending on our political stances, one could say this is happening now, but that is for a different time, and a different blog post. Today we need to focus on participating in our democracy, whether that is by voting, engaging in civic activities such as protesting, or lobbying our elected officials on a certain bill or topic. But what we need to realize now more than ever, is that we are at a turning point, the United States is facing challenges currently like never before. The country has become increasingly divided on issues such as abortion, voting rights, among others. What is really concerning however, is that there is not a consensus on condemning QAnon or white supremacy along with admitting there is racism within the United States. This all can be related back to social media.
Every morning people wake up to get ready for the day, they shower, brush their teeth, and get dressed. Yet for some reason, one of the tasks when people wake up is to check social media, whether that is Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, or Twitter. Americans have become social media fiends, it is something that many people can not live without, as we are finding ourselves on our technological devices more and more. This has been an issue for the past couple of years, but has now surged with the outbreak of COVID-19 and social media users will continue to use an insane amount of their daily lives scrolling through new posts. And the issue with social media is that we are not communicating to each other as we would in-person, things are said that we would not normally even fathom saying to someone in real life essentially. Social media has become a place where hideous ideas and name calling has become apparent and by normalizing this on social media, people believe that some of these things are okay to say in public.
With quarantine being extended for a prolonged amount of time due to the inability to contain COVID-19 by the current presidential administration, social media has taken over the United States. Every week there is a tweet, a post on TikTok, or a picture on Facebook that garners national attention from public everyday citizens to media outlets to foreign governments. This not only helps divide the United States, but helps solidify relationships between members of our society that would not normally take place, ideally. More people believe in alt-right conspiracy theories, that the Black Lives Matter movement is headed by Antifa, and that America is under attack my American socialists with an agenda to destroy democracy as we know it. What people need to realize however, is that none of this is true, rather the social media platforms, and social media itself is the thing undermining our democracy. We no longer receive satisfaction from interacting with people in-person, rather all of our communication is through Zoom, text messages, or comments on posts. If we do not change how we are acting now, and remove social media from controlling our lives, one can only imagine what form of government the United States will assume next.

Tony Blair: A Paradox in Politics
After watching the BBC Documentary Blair & Brown: The New Labour Revolution you can't deny that in the realm of politics, few figures have left as indelible a mark as Tony Blair. A charismatic and dynamic leader, Blair's tenure as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1997 to 2007 was marked by a blend of modernization, economic prosperity, and, unfortunately, controversy. While I find myself at odds with Blair on several key issues, most notably regarding Northern Ireland and the Iraq War, one cannot deny the undeniable charm that defined his political persona.
Blair's charisma was a potent force that permeated both domestic and international politics. His eloquence and oratory skills were often cited as instrumental in winning the hearts and minds of the British public. Blair possessed a rare ability to connect with people, transcending traditional political boundaries. His communication style was polished, persuasive, and relatable, enabling him to navigate complex issues with apparent ease.
However, my disagreement with Blair on matters such as Northern Ireland and the Iraq War remains steadfast. The decision to involve Britain in the Iraq War in 2003, based on intelligence that later proved to be flawed, resulted in significant consequences and sparked widespread public dissent. Additionally, Blair's approach to the Northern Ireland peace process drew criticism for its compromises and concessions.
Despite these contentious decisions, Blair's charisma remained a powerful force. It is this enigmatic quality that allowed him to weather political storms, maintain popularity, and secure three consecutive terms as Prime Minister. Even in the face of opposition and skepticism, Blair's charm often seemed to provide a shield, deflecting some of the criticisms that might have been more damaging to a less charismatic leader.
The paradox of disagreeing with Blair on substantive policy matters while acknowledging his charisma raises questions about the nature of leadership in politics. Charisma can be a double-edged sword, as it has the potential to rally support and create a positive image, but it may also be used to mask controversial decisions or distract from substantive issues.
As I reflect on the legacy of Tony Blair, it is essential to appreciate the complexities that define political leadership. Charisma, while a captivating quality, should not overshadow a critical evaluation of policy decisions and their real-world consequences. In recognising Blair's charisma, we must also remain vigilant in holding leaders accountable for the choices they make, even when wrapped in the allure of charm.

#2 Digital Citizenship // Political Engagement
It’s safe to say that social media has completely transformed how information spreads and therefore the way that political communication takes place. So what exactly is political communication? Broadly defined, it’s the role of communication in the political process, it can take place in a variety of forms (formal or informal), in a variety of venues (public or private) and through a variety of medium (mediated or unmediated content). (AALEP, 2016)
In recent years, given the tremendous growth of social media, social media sites like Twitter and Facebook have increased political participation and has allowed for not only the spread of political information but also political opinions. The effect that social media actually had on political communication only really became apparent during the 2008 U.S campaign and election. The social media realm became a place and a means for candidates to connect with their voters and attempt to persuade people of the social media community to become a supporter and therefore a voter as well. The use of social media in the world of politics has also attracted a more diverse range of political participators, it has encouraged the younger generation to become involved and have their own say too.
An example that is an absolute must to discuss when looking at the topic of political communication is of course the oh-so talked about 2016 U.S presidential election campaign between Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump. Social media sites created a platform for debate, critique and fast spread of information. In saying this though, there is no evidence that social media has replaced traditional channels for communication, TV debates, advertising, the news media and press conferences are still highly prioritised by campaigns. (Enli, 2016)
The Trump and Clinton campaigns both used Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube as platforms for political communication, however their style of communication differed… quite significantly to say the least. Gunn Enli describes Hilary Clinton’s campaign as one of professionalism, whereas Donald Trump’s campaign had a more authentic style which pointed towards ‘de-professionalisation’ and ‘amateurism’.
Although social media hasn’t completely shut down the traditional channels of political communication, it has definitely altered how much information is released in the traditional way. For example, Hilary Clinton announced her candidacy by tweeting ‘I’m running for President.’ This was followed by a YouTube video titled ‘Getting Started’, where Clinton tells us that she will be running for President. Traditionally, this news would be announced through a press conference but the immense presence of social media has changed that.
There is no doubt that social media has encouraged a massive change in political communication and the way that information is dispersed and received. Not only that, it has also allowed for a more, let’s say unique style of campaigning as seen by Donald Trump.
