Owlwood Mansion
Owlwood Mansion: Home To Stars Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis & Cher Has Sold
Location: Holmby Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA
On the market since 2017, priced at $180 million then reduced to $115 million, the historic celebrity-magnet Owlwood Mansion, the crown jewel of L.A.’s Holmby Hills, has sold for $88 million.
Completed in 1936, few Los Angeles mansions have its stature, rolling grounds or have been the center of so much gossip. The classic Tuscan-styled mansion was built in 1935 by Robert D. Farquhar for Florence and Charles Quinn. Florence was divorced from Arthur Letts who, in 1925, was the original owner and developer of the 3,296 acres of land on which Holmby Hills is located.
The home on four acres was the largest and most luxurious house at the time measuring in at 12,000 square feet and a cost of $150,000. Farquhar also designed Beverly Hills High School and Festival Hall for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco.
After the Quinns, the home next passed into the hands of 20th Century Fox co-founder Joseph Schenck. Described as a 70-year-old, cigar-chomping type in the book Unreal Estate by Michael Gross, Marilyn Monroe was said to spend much time there and at only 21, it was fairly common knowledge that although Schenck was still married to his first wife, had an affair with him and ended up living in the guest house.
By the time actor Tony Curtis was near the end of his career, he bought the home from Schenck, but died only six month later soon after giving a party where Cher was one of the guests. She fell in love with the house and after Curtis’ death, she and first-husband, Sonny Bono, purchased the home.
Gossip began when Cher wanted to leave Sonny but CBS threatened to cancel their TV show, the Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, if one of them moved out. So they decided to inhabit separate wings. Later on they sold the estate to playboy Ghazi Aita of Monaco.
It was during Aita’s tenure when the gossip soared. He ran a harem of starlets to such an extreme that all of Hollywood enjoyed it as cocktail chatter. He became fodder for Heidi Fleiss’ black book. Aita sold it to Ameriquest-founder Roland Arnall who added six more acres bringing the estate to 10 acres and named it Owlwood due to the number of owls on the property. It was put on the market only a few months later in 2017.
Taking its place among the world’s outstanding classic residences, the old-world craftsmanship, oak paneling, carved moldings, impressive grand foyer, spacious rooms and park-like grounds for strolling are universally appealing.
The main residence includes stately public rooms, multiple fireplaces and chandeliers, nine bedrooms and ten baths. Grounds contain two guard houses, a pool, pool house, fountains, fruit trees and restored formal gardens.
Historic and storied, Owlwood mansion has sold for $88 million. The listing agents were Sally Forester Jones, Tyrone McKillen and Tomer Fridman of Compass, Beverly Hills and Drew Fenton of Hilton & Hyland, Beverly Hills.

Why do you get hornier in the summer?
(Picture: Ella Byworth for Metro.co.uk)
There are few things that make me feel less sexy than feeling my sweat-drenched thighs peeling off a chair.
Apart from, perhaps, the film of sweat on my upper lip and chin. Or my swollen feet. Or the sun burn on my shoulders.
And yet, despite all the undeniably unsexy realities of summer, loads of us find ourselves feeling more frisky the second the temperature rises.
Let’s clarify this first: It’s tricky to say for certain whether people actually do have more sex in the summer than they do in the winter.
Research suggests that in southern and tropical climates, fewer babies are conceived in the hotter months, but it’s not clear whether this is because people don’t try for a baby as often when it’s hot, or if the decrease is down to a dip in the quality of sperm thanks to the heat.
In cooler climates, however, peak birth rates tend to hit in the spring, nine months after summertime… so perhaps it’s not necessarily the heat itself that makes us fancy sex, but the shake up of our usual routine: If you live in a place where the heat is oppressive and overwhelming in the summer, you might not feel particularly sexy, while Brits will get excited over even a hint of a heatwave.
There hasn’t yet been any research asking people to track the frequency of their sex depending on the temperature, sadly, so we don’t have any data to go off that isn’t to do with baby-making – which rules out all the potential summer sex that’s happening with contraception.
What we do know, though, is that our interest in sex increases in the summer.
(Picture: Ella Byworth for Metro.co.uk)
Research has revealed that sex-related Google searches – such as searches for porn or access to sex workers – occur most frequently in the summer.
And Adam Lewis, Hot Octopuss Co-Founder, tells Metro.co.uk: ‘We notice an increase in sales of our toys every summer – both those intended for solo use and those aimed at couples. Maybe it’s all the flesh on display, maybe it’s a seasonal effect on libido, but it certainly seems that when the sun shines, people feel sexier.
The reasons behind us all becoming hornier in the summer months are a mixture of socialisation, psychological factors, and the physical stuff.
Let’s start with the social side of things.
Thanks to summer breaks from school and sunny holidays, we’re conditioned to think of summer as a time to cut loose, ditch work and responsibility, and embrace our hedonistic desires. We eat mounds of ice cream, we down cocktails, and we spend our days lazing in the pub or sunning in our gardens rather than getting our hustle on.
It’s reasonable that being in that frame of mind makes us want to get more sexual, too, especially as we’re likely to be more relaxed and free of the niggling stresses that throw a bucket of cold water over our sexual desire.
Then there’s the increase in visual stimulation: When it’s hot, there’s more skin on show. Seeing potential mates stroll around in bikinis, sundresses, or jorts (sexy, sexy jorts) is bound to get us going.
Thanks to the conversation around cuffing season and summer romances, we’re also encouraged to have all the casual sex we fancy in the summer, while in colder months there’s a looming sense that any snuggly boning means you’re going to get locked into a relationship.
(Picture: Ella Byworth for Metro.co.uk)
But there’s more going on than the joy of ice cream and skimpy clothing.
‘Summer sunshine promotes extra release of serotonin and dopamine,’ psychologist Dr Cliff Arnall tells Metro.co.uk. ‘These are two of the most energising and positive neurochemicals in the human brain.
‘For a healthy sex drive both of these chemicals need to be present in decent amounts, together with some giggles and being relaxed.’
The additional vitamin D production we experience thanks to exposing ourselves to the sun can help things along, too, as some people will experience an increase in production of oestrogen and tesosterone as a result, upping their sex drive.
Exposure to the sun can also drop melatonin levels – handy, as melatonin can block sex hormones.

Is it possible to masturbate too much?
Why do you get hornier in the summer?
Holly Willoughby stuns in 'last day of term' dress before summer break
Your sweat might play a role, also, as it helps us to spread our unique, seductive scent, getting potential mates aroused and attracted.
The only tricky thing is that while your sex drive may increase on a hormonal and subconscious level, the idea of having sex when it’s 30 degrees can feel nausea-inducing, meaning you’re all fired up with nowhere to go (or nowhere to come, rather). That can lead to frustration, which only gets worse when the summer’s hot and we’re all more irritable.
Our advice: Embrace your newfound horniness, do away with any insecurities about your sweat or chub rub or your salt water soaked hair (your partner’s just as susceptible to the summer sex drive boost, so they really won’t be bothered), and keep things chilled.
Don’t overexert yourself, – not even an orgasm is worth heat stroke and dehydration – make the adjustments you need to keep things cool, and don’t let your horny summer brain make you do stupid things like attempting sex in a field (think of the bug bites) or in someone’s pool.

This Holmby Hills estate sold last year for $90 million. Now it's back at $180 million
Just 10 months after being sold for $90 million, making it the second-largest sale ever in Los Angeles County at the time, the historic Owlwood estate has returned to the market for double the price.
The 10-acre Holmby Hills property features a 12,000-square-foot 1936 Tuscan-style mansion designed by architect Robert D. Farquhar. Among its famous former residents: actor Tony Curtis and, later, singing duo Sonny Bono and Cher.
Owlwood consists of three buildable parcels. One lot is currently vacant, the second includes the 1936 home and the third is home to a complex that includes a swimming pool, a guesthouse and a sunken tennis court.
The three parcels were combined in 2002 by the late billionaire Toland Arnall, founder of Ameriquest Capital Corp., and his wife, Dawn.
Last year the storied estate sold to Sturmer Pippin Investments. Bob Shapiro, head of Sturmer Pippin Investments and chief executive of Woodbridge Luxury Homes, said that since the sale he has hired “the best of the best to put together a redevelopment plan which will boost the property’s value while maintaining the architectural integrity of the home’s origin.”
The development will include an option to subdivide a portion of the acreage into buildable land or additional homes as a part of a gated enclave with a private street.
“Nowhere else can you find 10 park-like acres in the middle of Holmby Hills,” said Tyrone McKillen, co-founder of Plus Development group. “It’s probably one of the greatest single properties in all of America.”
One of the biggest questions: At $180 million, who will buy it?
(Mercer Vine)
Paul Habibi, professor of real estate at UCLA, said it is about finding a buyer who recognizes the property as a historic one-of-a-kind estate.
“Those streets in Holmby Hills have some of the highest prices in the nation,” said Habibi. “If there is a property that is going to command a price at $180 million, it is going to be in that area.”
Habibi also said putting a $180-million price on the home could be a marketing strategy to give the home more buzz.
Bret Parsons, real estate agent and architectural director for Coldwell Banker, said Owlwood’s sellers are smart to take advantage of a “stratospheric” market where people will pay almost anything for trophy homes.
“Owlwood is a metaphor for the dramatically rising prices of properties in Los Angeles and Southern California, and people are taking advantage of it,” Parsons said.
Last year, for instance, two notable Holmby Hills properties were each sold for $100 million: the Playboy Mansion, and a home on Carolwood Drive purchased by investor Tom Gores. And shortly after Owlwood’s sale, the Manor — the former Candy and Aaron Spelling estate in Holmby Hills — was listed for $200 million.
He added that it’s ultimately the buyer who determines the value of a home: “Homes have no value until someone is willing to pay something for them.”
Plus Development Group will oversee the development of the Owlwood property. Adam Rosenfeld, co-founder of Mercer Vine, an L.A.-based real estate agency, is the listing agent.
