Flash Mob Culture Through Fatboy Slim's "Praise You" Music Video
In the late 1990s, a unique cultural phenomenon emerged, blending spontaneous performance art with the power of digital connection. Flash mobs, characterized by groups of people assembling suddenly in a public place to perform a seemingly pointless act and then spreading out, captivated the imagination of people. One iconic representation of this era is the music video for Fatboy Slim's "Praise You," directed by Spike Jonze and Roman Coppola.
Released in 1999, the "Praise You" music video offers a quirky, and cute portrayal of flash mob culture. Set in front of the historic Fox Theater in Westwood Village, Los Angeles, the video captures the essence of spontaneity and community-driven creativity that defined the era.
The video begins with a title card announcing a "Torrance Community Dance Group Presentation," immediately setting the stage for what unfolds next. What follows is a delightfully amateurish yet charming dance performance by a fictional group of dancers. Led by Spike Jonze himself and members of the renowned Rock Steady Crew, the routine is intentionally unpolished, adding to its quirky appeal.
We can see some examples of flash mob culture in that era’s TV series. Modern Family and Glee had flash mob scenes with En Vogue’s Free Your Mind, and Glee with The Safety Dance by Men Without Hats.

What sets the "Praise You" video apart is its incorporation of real-life reactions from unaware people. As the dancers break into their routine, the camera captures genuine responses from pedestrians, with various emotions visible. This element of authenticity adds a layer of unpredictability and excitement to the performance, blurring the lines between art and reality.
Throughout the video, the dancers interact playfully with their environment, incorporating elements of improvisation and spontaneity. They wave at observers, engage with the camera, and even pause their routine to acknowledge the crowd. This sense of community and connection demonstrates the spirit of flash mob culture, where individuals come together to create moments of shared joy and spontaneity.
As the performance climaxes, the crowd outside the theater applauds the dancers, culminating in a heartwarming display of appreciation and camaraderie. The video's feel-good ending reinforces the notion that, despite its seemingly frivolous nature, flash mob culture has the power to bring people together and uplift spirits.
In retrospect, the "Praise You" music video serves as a nostalgic snapshot of an old era, capturing the essence of a cultural phenomenon that defined the late 1990s and early 2000s. It celebrates the spirit of spontaneity, creativity, and community that made flash mobs a memorable and cherished part of our cultural landscape. And like the dancers in the video, we can't help but join in the joy of it all.

Even If: - Kutless ~
Sometimes all we have to hold on to, Is what we know is true of who You are. So when the heartache hits like a hurricane, That could never change who You are. And we trust in who You areEven if the healing doesn’t come, And life falls apart, And dreams are still undone, You are God You are good. Forever faithful One, Even if the healing. Even if the healing doesn’t come.
Lord we know Your ways are not our ways. So we set our faith in who You are. Even though You reign high above us. You tenderly love us. We know Your heart. And we rest in who You areYou’re still the Great and Mighty One. We trust You always. You’re working all things for our good. We’ll sing your praiseYou are God and we will bless You. As the Good and Faithful One, You are God and we will bless You. Even if the healing doesn’t come, Even if the healing doesn’t come.

“I have to ‘Praise You’ like I should.”
“Praise You” is a song by Fatboy Slim and it was released in 1999 and there are some interesting parts in both its music video and its lyrics.
Tumblr media
After I watched it, I made a research about it and I found out that the video was shot “guerrilla-style” that is a form of independent filmmaking characterized by low budgets, skeleton crews, and simple props using whatever is available. Also, I learnt that they shot the scenes in real places and locations without warning, and obtaining permits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The video takes place in front of a movie theatre, and there are some people dancing together. When I first saw that moment, I could not understand what they are doing and I laughed so hard, not suprisingly because I found other people’s gaze towards the dancers quite funny. They are like “What are they doing?”… While I was reading about the video, I saw that it is called “flash mob” which is “a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform for a brief time, then quickly disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment, satire, and artistic expression”. As an audience, I am absolutely aware that they are actually telling something by dancing, although it seems weird.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the lyrics, I kinda had a clear idea of what they are trying to say. They basically talked about freedom because of the conditions at that time in their country.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think that the thing they did is very interesting and respectable because they tell us something both by literally saying it and by dancing. Besides, one of the possibilities that art gives people is to be able to express what they think in a way. And that is a respectable thing I believe because we have difficulties standing behind the thoughts that are important to us.

Hey it is Gökçe, you can call me Sky, today I will be discussing about the iconic video of Praise You. In the 1990s, the advancement of alternative media grew and during that decade, trends like grunge, the disco culture, and hip hop expanded around the world, assisted by new technologies such as cable television and especially the World Wide Web. The videos’ track Praise You gives the mid 90s vibe and the video produced by Roman Coppola, directed by Spike Jonze, creates a feeling that is letting loose, not caring, and just vibing with the rhythm. On the first look when I have watched in class, Fatboy Slim's grainy, almost grunge, cheerful video for Praise You, it gives a total iconic atmosphere which turns out it is. The song itself with uplifting vocals has a 90s anthem energy with the help of a VHS camcorder look which I am also a big fan of. According to one of the performers, Jonze called a group of actors to create the video and with the iconic “guerrilla” performance, the whole thing was filmed in one take which shows how the whole vibe was set on the natural atmosphere- even they were filming, someone was randomly getting legal permission from the people in the background for using shots- Michael Gier which is one of the group's performers mentions how audience have no clue what to do at first, but then cheered for them which I had the same feeling when I first reacted to the video.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The dance is loose and funny which makes its charm of the video then. The footage is grainy, funny, untouched, and loose yet still won four MTV Awards since it shows the audience the distance of cliches from other 90s music videos. Spike Jonze, has enormously impacted music and pop culture which made this video iconic in the first place. Back in the day, montages and the struggle of making videos-the whole exhausting process- almost perfect was the aim so Praise You shifted a whole new understanding that entertainment does not have to claim a struggle of perfection. In class, as we discussed Fluxus, the collaboration of artists’ which especially emphasized performance art, reminded me Praise You video, so they might be influenced by their manifesto before the shooting.
Tumblr media
In my opinion, the ‘viral video notion’ can also be applied to Praise You, which may started the todays’ whole concept of viral videos and how we consume Internet videos’ today. Besides the song’s Remixes, the whole concept still alive with other social media tools.

Fatboy Slim - Praise You
Hello, I am İrem and welcome to my first blog. I will write for my COMD 282 class about anything I like and inspires me. I hope you will enjoy.
This blog is about one of Fatboy Slim songs “Praise You” which is new for me. It has a cheerful musical rhythm that made me happy. However, while I was watching the music video I couldn’t believe that it’s something professional. A group of people were dancing incongruously at a place like shopping center and someone who is passing from there shooting their video in an amateur way.
Tumblr media
To be honest, I could’t stop watching it. The emotions that I felt was beautiful. I wanted to be in that group of people and join their crazy dance. They were feeling the music and moving with the rhythm like probably most of us doing in our houses when there is no one around. Because we think that if we do these movements people will think that we’re crazy. This is the problem of today’s world. We don’t act like we feel. Before going out, we put our masks on our faces to join that crowd. It’s brilliant to see people who act like how they feel except disturbing other people. I find this video very sincere an positive.
Tumblr media
I am also very suprised that this music video has three MTV Music awards and people are supporting them. It’s good to see people who saw the real value of this piece and I see the producers of this music video as genious people and real artists that succeeded to give beautiful emotions to its audience.

The Battle with Clichés and Accepted Rules, Praise You by Fatboy Slim.
”Look at these moves, incredibly funny!”
Tumblr media
When I first watched the music video for Fatboy Slim's song Praise you, I got strange about the interesting choreographies and the shooting of the clip. Although I am a person who enjoys watching this genre, which is considered "very amateur" by most, I could not establish a connection with this clip. Later, I started thinking that it shouldn't just be that bad and simple, but there must be other underlying things, and as a result of my research, I came across a clip that actually carries a huge fortune.
Watching this clip, you can make comments like, “Look at these moves, incredibly funny!”. However, the clip for the song Praise You contains much more than that. First, it's shot with style that has never been seen before. This style is called guerrilla-style. The main reason it is called guerrilla-style is that the video is not allowed from the owners of the property and the surrounding crowd is included in the video in a completely natural, unadjusted way.
Tumblr media
At this point, a decision comes in which I admire the idea, Matt Schoolgirls and Brian Teyssier, the directors of the video, take their cameras and begins to shoot Spike Jonze and The Torrance Community Dance Group in a very natural environment, without setting what will happen. They refuse to have all the music videos shot on set sets so far, and in the flow of an ordinary day, they press the record button of the camera and start shooting a clip of Fatboy Slim's song Praise You. At first, famous music channels such as MTV think this video is "too amateur" and reject this clip. However, it then starts broadcasting on the attention it receives, and not only does it win many awards.
The feeling of this clip, which is very little on a budget but has infinite freedom, is that we should create a free space for ourselves by questioning these rules and cliches rather than doing the same things that are considered "beautiful" or "successful". We should PRAİSE our feelings and ideas.
