A still moment.
Cloud sailing slowly across the sky, sunlight and shadows. The flickering sheen of palm fronds gently shaken by the breeze. The clatter of sea air-hardened plant fibres crumpling together and rubbing like the back legs of a cricket.
Birds. So many birds.
At some point in pre-history Tracy Island had risen above the waves and created one of the rare oases of land in a sea of ocean desert and life had taken advantage of it. Birds discovered it and made it their home. Coral colonised it and built the reef his fish brother played in.
Trees, shrubs, ferns, moss, insects, an entire ecosystem unique to the Island had grown.
And eventually it had become his family’s home.
He filtered sand grains through his fingers.
Today had been one of those days where he questioned whether it was worth it.
Of course, it was worth it.
It was his father’s voice in the back of his mind. A familiar timbre and surety.
He had clung to both many times, and they gave reassurance and direction.
But days like today?
They were not enough.
His father wasn’t the one who had to watch a brother fall.
His father wasn’t the one who had to cling to a brother’s hand while he screamed in pain.
His father wasn’t the one who had to face his family with news enough to shatter them.
Was it worth it?
He tried to answer that in the positive but the words crumbled under the weight of anguish.
John had survived.
Barely.
There was a long road ahead and it would be some time before he saw his beloved Thunderbird Five again. He was going to be hell to live with.
A hell that was heaven up against the alternative.
His sigh was like the sound of the world squashing him just a little more.
They followed their father’s dream. It had become their dream.
But at what cost? How much did they have to pay? When did it stop? When was enough enough?
His brothers’ eyes grew wearier every day. Alan, barely into adulthood and already aged by experience. It hurt to watch his spark dim. It hurt to see him struggling with sights and sounds he should have been protected from.
God, he wished he could protect his little brother.
Protect all of them.
The imp in the back of his mind sat down next to his father and smiled. ‘I’m fine, don’t worry.’
He couldn’t help it. He was responsible.
Wiping his hands on his pants, he stood up. His runners were full of gritty sand and the waves mocked him with their regularity.
He rubbed his face, but he couldn’t scrub away the sight of John screaming.
So, he broke into a run.
His feet hit the first of the rocks leading off the beach and he leapt up and back onto the path he had deviated from earlier. Nothing was calming his heart.
The question kept surfacing.
Was it worth it?
His feet pounded amongst the gravel, as regular and as mocking as the waves below.
The view blurred.
God, he was going to stash John on Five and never let him down again.
He would love that.
Something in his heart just hurt.
His feet pounded faster.
His mind’s eye darted over familiar faces. Sadness, fear, Grandma’s tears.
He rubbed his face again and his hand came back wet.
Goddamnit!
Scott staggered to a halt and dropped his hands to his knees, his breath coming in little more than haggard gasps as his head drooped.
Goddamnit.
How could it be possibly worth his brothers’ lives?
A hand touched his back and he flinched away.
But the hand was strong and before he knew it, he was wrapped in even stronger arms, his head drawn to a flannel shoulder, words of reassurance rumbling in his ear.
For a moment, there was just distress and tears.
“He’s going to be okay.” Virgil’s voice was always reassuring. Always there.
Scott pulled away, straightening up and wiping his face. “I know.”
“You did what you had to do.”
“I know.”
His younger brother was staring up at him, worry in his dark eyes. A hand reached up to grip his arm. “You had no choice.”
“I know.” But this time it was hoarse and it hurt so much.
“John wouldn’t have it any other way. Those children owe their lives to your decision.”
“I don’t care.”
“What?” Worry turned to puzzlement.
“Why is John’s life worth less than another.”
“It isn’t. But it is his choice.”
Scott opened his mouth, but his protest died in his throat.
Virgil picked up on it and furthered his point, his remaining hand landing on Scott’s other arm and gripping tight. “It was his choice, Scott. It is John’s life to offer.”
“It was my decision.”
Virgil’s lips thinned. “No. Not really. He would have done it anyway.”
The image of his brother screaming taunted him again. So much pain.
And he had given his permission.
But John would have done it anyway.
Hell, Scott would have done it, if he had had the chance.
Anything to protect his brother.
To save those children’s lives.
Virgil drew him into a hug again and Scott wasn’t sure if it was for him or for Virgil.
Likely both.
Was it worth it?
Children screaming.
John screaming.
He didn’t have an answer anymore.
It just hurt.

There’s been so much hype for Marcel and Iliya this update (and truly they deserve it so much) but this one is for Tracy and Freya!!! Tracy has activated the part of my brain that Carrie activated in Blood Moon where I Will Protect Her At All Costs like I don’t care what bad things are happening to you Tracy I promise I will use my vampire powers to keep you safe. And Freya!! I never unlocked the conversations with her in chapter 3 so this was my first time meeting her and all it took was one (1) conversation for her to permanently reroute my MC’s entire life plans. I love how she talks to the MC like they’re a vampire but not like they’re a monster; she toes this line really nicely where she both acknowledges what the MC is without judging or condemning them for it and it’s such an interesting approach compared to the other ROs!!!! Anyway this one’s for the girls 😘
Thank you. I'm really proud of Tracy's kiss scene and Freya just gives me such warm, cozy vibes. I love my girls. 💙

@edutainer2022 , the original post was so long it was causing issues on my phone for some reason, so I'm copying your last post and starting a new 'thread' (so long as that is alright with you. If you so wish I'll copy my reply and put it on your thread ^^;; )
Of IR is obviously a cash sinkhole. They also tend to wreck quite a lot of property through the rescues. Zero-XL trial and error construction alone seems to have cost a budget of a sizable country. Also... the way IR policy is about not saving equipment and John merrily suggesting Global One worth billions of hard fought for tooth and nail funding be abandoned - they boys probably never had to file a grant proposal in their life. In their life equipment the caliber and expense of a space station is replaceable on demand. Unless it has sentimental value.
I LOVE the idea Mom's heirloom money was a major contribution. Although, the old residence of the Gran Roca doesn't appear opulent - we don't know the extent of the estate (and horses? Where did the horses go?). Maybe smart investments, patents, not just aeronatic business. Mom is canonically old southern money (but still no name).
Oh, the Bereznik thing WITHOUT Jeff in the picture would have been a glorious mess. Scott is a) respectfully, a fairy nobody at that point (well, Daddy's boy, but no political and little economic leverage); b) all but a liability for GDF if they want to go ahead with IR - Scott is one foot out and vocal about his brothers being no foot in, the IR branching AWAY into Thunderbirds is afoot, and while it's not a problem to train GDF officers into operatives, the hitch is probably in the rights and specs for the tech (and Brains) - the Tracies are out, IR is out of GDF clutch. So yeah... Scotty MIA is more convenient... than not. So quite likely the Old Guard pooled up for an extraction that "never happened" under conditions that Scott's imprisonment "never happened" to anyone who should ask. Yeah, Scott doesn't like or wants anything to do with GDF law inforcement angle. Maybe IR is later greenlit under STRICT conditions they will only identify as civilians. Scott is so worried Kayo was breaking that rule as if their license depended on it. Maybe it did. He's worried as late as Chain Reaction (all the while aiding and abating an escape of a terrorist out of pure unironic goodness of his heart).
I agree, much as the idea of Military bros is appealing - Gordon indicates no exposure to that structure. Scott does, but, like you said, not in the manner that would suggest he thrived or wanted to do it for life. Semi-canonical "interview" with "Scott" has him flounder on a question what he would do, if not IR. The military service doesn't even come up. Something something about charity and philanthropy.
I wonder how much of Zero-X was built with Jeff and Lee in mind. Calypso was a two pilot mission. There wasn't much OUT THERE at the time to warrant T-drive powered rescues. No Marcian colony, nothing. Maybe Jeff and Lee felt stir crazy, "moored" on Earth and kinda expected to space-the-final-frontier it in their autumn days.
Yeah, TaG tends to be as hard on their equipment (and locations) as TOS was, but you have to factor that by the number of rescues... and with TaG being known, that means that people can 'contact' them for reimbursement for damages and harm and the like. Hck, protection from THAT might be part of the reason Jeff could ahve gone with a branch of the GDF initially. (actually, question... where does the Kyrano was a bad-ass ninja warrior come from? It's never said or even implied in the show that I recall. Is it just because Kayo is a kick-ass warrior? I ask because imagine if Kyrano was originally more of the lawyer type, or engineer who was helping Brains or the like). The Tracys, Brains, and Kayo are REALLY lackadaisical about objects and finances. Sometimes I get it, like when the choice is save a person OR save a thing... but they seem to be richer than even the TOS Tracys, and there are times where their lack of care of items is grating. Teh high-rise fire episode in example, where they took delight and went out of their way to damage the building / cut the top off of it - it legit would have been easier and safer to break the glass and lower the seats down, and the smugness to the building owner after bordered on them being asses. And in another example... yeah, Global One. O'Bannon was RIGHT in her call to try and save the station, that is a MASSIVE investment (and would have been a LOT OF DEADLY DEBRIS RAINING DOWN) and I frankly side with her on it. Like TOS tends to place people above the items too, but they do try to limit damage they cause, in the comics actually do their best to salvage /save items when possible (The ocean liner The President in example) and John and Scott even directly discuss how the Ocean Pioneer was a significant investment for the people involved and they should have tried saving it. Scott AGREES with John on that, but points out that they likely couldn't have done so before it blew up / they might not have been able to. In the comics (and novels to a degree) they HAVE made the call to save the objects as well on occasion.
On the Ranch not looking opulent... sometimes people with a lot of money don't spend it on mansions or the like, but instead on other things... and it's possible that the Mom's family prefered simply, homely, comforts and disliked ostentatious shows of wealth. (In an example... Tracy Island in TOS and TaG is like this. The interior is comfortable and not very showy... yes they're on a private island, but the home itself looks like a upper middle class home of the era. There's Virgil's piano, but it's a baby grand rather than a grand, and white pianos actually cost markidly less than black pianos. The game room has a pool table, but (esp in the 60s) Pool tables weren't that expensive unless you went all in, and even people on the lower end of middle class could possibly have one. The same is true for what we see in the TaG house. Upper end of middle class overall. One or two showy things, but not opulent. Not Southern money, Western money / South-Western money. Southern refers to the states in the south east and tends to come from foresty or farms, where-as western and south western are from ranches or oil/natural gas. (The USA is not so much one country as it is 50 countries in a trenchcoat XD The Mom's home is in the western states, which are about as different culturally from the 'southern' states as... hmm... Ukraine is from France. There are many simularities, but there are also many differences). Bad area for horses though, very rocky with little to no grass or open areas. Not good for cattle ranching either. Most likely it was oil or natural gas (despite teh show lambasting it, oil is vital for a HECK of a lot more than just fuel, and would still be required in the 'modern day' of the show)
Yeah, Jeff being gone when Scott was a POW would make for an interesting situation. a) Scott likely was at minimum a Captain, and the Tracy name would have been well known from how big the company was to Jeff's heroic 'death', so Scott would be in the very bad position of being a 'nobody'... related to several 'somebodies' who could be levereged for ransom and Scott himself would likely be tortured for information on Tracy Industries, the (at that point) shut down iR 'branch', the GDF in general... It wouldn't be a good time for him in the slightest b) Scott being a POW would, terrifyingly, be a 'good' situation for the GDF. He wouldn't have any information they would need to worry about, it keeps him out of the way and out of trouble, he doesn't have teh threat of leaving the GDF which means as long as he's a POW they have access to Brains and the funding from Tracy Industries, they might be able to get Virgil or John to join up (Gordon would still be too young to enlist, as he'd only be 16 or 17)... Horrifyingly, they'd have every reason to both make sure that Scott stayed alive... and stayed a POW. And Scott would KNOW THAT. Which would go a VERY LONG way to explaining his apparent SEVERE lack of trust (and at times apparent near hatred) for the GDF. He likes and trusts Casey and Lee, but the GDF as a whole? Odds are Casey was very much bending or even breaking orders to get even slightly involved in the rescue. Heck, just her HIDING the fact that others were planning a rescue might have been all she was able to do, it might have been almost entirely Penny's dad via his connections and possibly sending Parker in, and quite likely Lee finding a way off the Moon (oddly, despite my earlier statement... I do't think Kyrano would be involved in this rescue. There's no indication that he ever left whatever bolthole he fled to, and if he didn't show up to help when the Hood returned or when they started finding evidence that Jeff was alive... he isn't going to show up to save Scott. Which means the rescue party was likely Parker, Lee, and possibly Penny's dad... who I totally imagine to basically be a 1:to:1 for Sir Jeremy Hodge from TOS. Odds are all the POWs were rescued, not just Scott.
Scott leaving the GDF likely the SECOND he was recovered enough to be coherent / lucid likely was a blow to the GDF, as that means Brains and the Tracy income would now be gone. I could totally see them putting a 'if you become a military organization, we will be 'forced' to have iR become part of the GDF again... it explains the total lack of weapons on the Thunderbirds or Tracys (I'm sorry, weapons for self defense or defense of others is a good thing overall) and why Scott is SO INTENSE about Kayo getting into combat situations... but also why he doesn't really get snarly until Kayo WORKS WITH THE GDF. He sacrificed a HELL of a lot to make sure that never happened, and he likely sees it as the GDF getting one MASSIVE foot in the door to them taking over iR 'again'.
TOS Scott and Gordon show a lot of evidence of not only havng been in the military, but having thrived in it. And some people DO do well in the military, quite often very good people. But Gordon is only 18-20 by the tme of the Pilot, so there honestly is no way for him to have served while still having his lines indicating that he's been a full-time member of iR for a few years prior to the pilot apply on top of the fact that he shows NO behaviors or actions that fit with a former member of the military. tagScott DOES show behaviors and actions that match up with a former member of the military... but they match up with the behaviors of those who just did NOT thrive / work / mesh with the military life. He very much seems to be a 'I served and by God do I regret it' type (which hey, fair, some people just aren't right for it)
you know, oddly, I don't think Jeff or Lee (or iR) were in mind at all with the Zero X. The GDF wouldn't really want either to go out exploring the far edges of the solar system, and with iR up and running (and plans to go independent with it) I actually doubt that Jeff or Lee would have wanted to go do so. Lee AFTER Jeff's 'death' might have been interested in that sort of thing as we see with him staying on the Mars Colony... but not before, I don't think. Look at how happy he was to stay on the Moon Base. He had nodesire or drive to go out exploring, he was happy to stay at Alphie and only left when he had no choice.

Related to this post, since y'all asked (@sweetwhumpandhellacomf @autophagay @whump-queen) and i don't feel like answering each of you separately; I was talking about the Dragonlance Legends trilogy by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman (mainly the first book of the trilogy, The Time of the Twins)
Allow me to quickly introduce the central characters of the story :D
First of all, we have the dark mage Raistlin Majere, who has a very bad case of being an edgy D&D pc. He plans to enter the Abyss to destroy Takhisis, the goddess of evil, and ascend into godhood in her stead, and is willing to do anything to achieve that goal, no matter the cost to other people or the world or even to himself. But to gain sufficient power to challenge Takhisis he needs to get his hands on spellbooks written by an ancient dark mage that were destroyed in the Cataclysm over three hundred years ago. And opening the gates of the Abyss may only be done by a black-robed mage of evil and a cleric of Paladine, the god of good, working together - this supposedly impossible condition having been devised long ago to protect the world from the devastating consequences of doing so.
Then we have Crysania of Tarinius; cold, strong-willed, and proud, but somewhat naive, she grew up as the sheltered daughter of a noble family, but traded riches and title for a life of a priestess, a Revered Daughter of Paladine. She is one of the true clerics who have been granted the ability to use divine magic. When Paladine sends her in a dream a warning of Raistlin's evil plans, she goes to confront him, and comes to believe that Raistlin can be redeemed and brought back to the light. Which is exactly what she sets out to attempt.
Then there's Caramon Majere, Raistlin's twin brother. Where Raistlin's power is in his intelligence and his skill with magic, Caramon's is in the strength of his body and his skill with a sword. Where Raistlin, as a child, was ostracized and bullied, Caramon was the popular one. And Caramon is endlessly loyal to Raistlin, and at least half his sense of self is built on being Raistlin's brother, and he wants nothing more than to have the Raistlin he used to know (or thinks he used to know) back. In the past two years, Caramon has tried settling down to live an ordinary life with his wife, but it hasn't really worked out for him.
And then there's also Tasslehoff Burrfoot, Raistlin and Caramon's former adventuring companion, of the "cheerful and well-meaning but doesn't usually think things through, has cleptomaniac tendencies, and is very good at getting himself into trouble and getting into places he definitely wasn't supposed to go" flavor of rogue. (He's a more static character than the three i mentioned above, but he's around so much that I feel I had to mention him by name.) Plus of course there's a number of various side characters.
In the first book of the Legends trilogy, "The Time of the Twins", Raistlin journeys back in time to find the lost spellbooks he needs, and other mages, in an attempt to stop him, send Crysania and Caramon back in time, to the city of Istar ruled by the priests of Paladine, to a time just before the disastrous Cataclysm that will wipe the city off the map. And Tas tags along with the two, despite really not being supposed to.
In the name of fairness, though, I do need to warn you that this is american high fantasy written in the 80s. Which means that it contains to varying degrees a number of the problematic and iffy tropes that are unfortunately typical to the genre and the time period. Crysania is... almost surprisingly well-written and complex, for a female character in 80s fantasy, and generally speaking I find her an interesting character, but she does still get a few misogynistic tropes sent her way and is nearly raped (only nearly, it doesn't actually happen, but if it's a particularly squicky topic for you, you might wanna tread carefully there) at one point in the second book. Plus then you have the "certain sentient races are fundamentally evil and/or stupid while others are neutral and elves for the most part tend towards good but are snobby assholes about it" trope which is always a bit questionable, and some other nonsense like that. I would say that for the most part the iffy stuff is either "that aged poorly/is a product of its time" or "the authors have some probably unconscious biases/didn't think the implications of this thing through" etc. rather than the result of active and malicious bigotry, and personally i approach these things mostly with the attitude of "there's no such thing as a morally pure book anyway and fantasy as a genre has traditionally had a huge problem with racist/sexist/homophobic/in some other way bigoted tropes so it's better to just try and be conscious about those while reading than swear off reading any over 10 years old fantasy books altogether", but your tolerance for these things may vary and it's up to you.
The amount of physical injury whump in the books is relatively limited (although if you're into magically-induced... i dunno, chronic illness, for lack of a better word, you're in for a treat with Raistlin), but the amount of angst, and the amount of manipulative and fucked up character dynamics are fun, and there's the occasional case where someone gets hurt physically as well. But do also keep in mind that healing magic is a Thing in the setting and Crysania is a cleric, and adjust your expectations accordingly (although near the end of the second book Caramon does get hurt a little bit at a point where Crysania has her hands full of other stuff and he ends up spending like half of his appearance in the third book limping around bc of that, so that was fun)
I'd also say that out of the three main characters, the one whose story the books are most concerned with telling is Caramon. (The Russian musical adaptation shifts the focus around more to Raistlin.) Like all of them are important and get time devoted to their perspectives and their stories, but ultimately I think the question the books are the most concerned with answering is whether Caramon is able to find his own legs to stand on and his own path to walk, whether he's able to find something better to build his identity on than being Raistlin's brother.
Also, the Legends trilogy technically is a sequel to Dragonlance Chronicles trilogy (Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winter Night, Dragons of Spring Dawning). Raist, Caramon, and Tas were all central characters in the Chronicles as well, and you'll also meet some other characters who were introduced in Chronicles, and there will be references to events that took place in that trilogy. Don't stress about it too much, I guarantee you that the Legends trilogy stands perfectly well on its own as a story even if you haven't read the Chronicles, I haven't read the Chronicles either (or, I started it, but never got further than the first book bc the pacing was sorta awkward and it wasn't very good at obfuscating the game mechanics so there were places where it was painfully clear that something was a game mechanic or that some moment was a dice roll with a certain result, and I just found it pretty distracting. The Legends is a lot better about it, idk if that's because it's not directly based on a playable commercial campaign or because the authors had just gotten better since starting Chronicles or what)

Um… OF COURSE I WILL!! Thank you for asking!!
First and foremost, we have my girl, Cordelia Grey (fc is Naomi Scott). Cord is a Muggle whose Aunt Andrea (her father’s sister) is a witch. For the first ten years of her life, she happily lived with her parents, having no clue that everything was going to change on her eleventh birthday.
That day, she was hanging with her aunt, waiting for her parents to join them when they get the news that they were killed in a car accident. It was also around that time that McGonagall came to give Cord her letter and help Drea explain that she was a witch.
Cord fell into a depression that day and didn’t get out of it until her aunt took her to Diagon Alley and she met one Harry Potter at Ollivander’s. While waiting to get their wands, the two of them started talking and it came up about both of them losing their parents and them never learning about the Wizarding World until now.
Later on, it comes up that Drea knew James and Lily (James thought of Drea as a younger sister and was VERY protective over her), and Harry and Hagrid join the girls for dinner where Drea tells them so many stories about them. It was the first time Harry ever felt that he had a family.
Fast forward to September 11th: they arrive at Hogwarts and are being sorted into their Houses. When Cord’s name is called, she quietly walks up to the stool and sits down. Once the Sorting Hat is put on top of her head, the two of them proceed to have a lengthy conversation. Slytherin comes up when Cord asks why everyone seems to hate it so much. The Hat gave her a condensed version of its background, leading Cord to ask if The Hat thought Slytherin was bad. To make a long story short, their conversation helped Cord to cement her decision.
The Sorting Hat announced SLYTHERIN, and everyone just fell dead silent (yep, Cord decided she was going to be a Slytherin because she knew she had a lot of the qualities the House prizes, but also she decided that it would be her mission to show everyone that not all Slytherins are evil).
So, first year was a bit hard to say the least for Cord. Harry wasn’t speaking to her, and a lot of the Slytherins were being mean (not that Cord wasn’t used to it; when she was younger, she was bullied quite a bit). However, it started looking up when she befriended Tracy Davis after the Sorting, and this is also when she met her future gf, Cheyenne, a Ravenclaw. They bumped into each other when Cord got lost trying to find the Charms classroom and became friends.
Further out in the year, Daphne Greengrass joins Cord and Tracy’s duo, and the trio later on become known as the Antimony Trio.
Third year, Drea becomes the new Muggle Studies professor and everyone LOVES her (with the exception of some Slytherins). When she was at Hogwarts, Drea was a Hufflepuff. She was a couple years younger than the Marauders, but Remus started tutoring her in DADA during her first year and became like another older brother to her. So did James once he started tutoring her in Transfiguration. Sirius became interested in her later on after hearing James rave on and on about her (“Pure ray of sunshine Padfoot, must protect at all costs!), but she wasn’t interested and basically, they are a LONG ASS slowburn.
Cheyenne’s fc is Amber Midthunder, and Drea’s fc is Billie Piper.

TIMING: Current
SUMMARY: Teagan protects the carbuncles at a deadly cost.
WARNINGS: Head Trauma
“Hello, wee one,” Teagan cooed at the carbuncles she had just rounded up after a tussle with a few amateur spellcasters. She figured they were as such due to their inability to do too much damage in the face of danger. Still, it was disheartening to kill anyone that appeared as young as them, even if they were human and attacking innocent creatures. There was still time to change their minds, to shape them and shift the perspective they had sadly developed. No more though, it was too late for them.
“You’re safe now.” She spoke again, not knowing if the carbuncles could even understand. If anything, it would help shape her into an even friendlier being in their eyes. “Go on and hide while I get cleaned up.” The spellcasters’ blood was all over Teagan’s hands as she sat by the lake and monitored the area while she washed her body.
The water soothed the burn of the crimson, and she sighed with a smile, peering around the rocks at the bodies she had piled by the edge. Once she was done cleaning off, Teagan had plans to drag them to the bottom of the lake and ensure they were never found. That plan would have to wait though. A voice broke through the silence, calling out a name the nix didn’t recognize but assumed it was one of the descendants laying in the silt.
In an instant, Teagan shifted completely, preparing for the next phase of the fight she thought was over. A nix’s work was never done, she supposed. She scanned, registering the new opponents as older magic wielders, a bigger threat. Ffyc. It was her hope that with it only being two, that it would be just as easy to take them out. Her instincts though, told her she was in for a real fight. Especially with the female caster.
“After her! Kill her! She killed Tracy, Evan, and Will!” The woman’s voice dripped with a mixture of sorrow and uninhibited bloodlust, sending a shiver down Teagan’s spine. She was going to be a real danger, unlike the first few that dared attack. As if to prove it, the nix was thrown back with incredible force, straight into rocks that stabbed and bruised her back repeatedly. She let out a silent squeak of pain each time, quickly standing up to charge and tackle once the barrage was over. Her claws sank into the spellcaster, attempting to dig deeper, but finding she was only clawing into ground. “W-what?” Teagan hadn’t tackled anyone. The woman laughed behind her, amused that her illusion had worked.
With red frustration, Teagan spread the color all over the ground with one swift movement, throwing her knife right at another spellcaster’s chest. He fell with a thud, screaming and pulling out the blade. And much to Teagan’s dismay, he smiled once his screams halted. He dug into the wound and began to utilize his own blood as he chanted in a language the nix could only guess was Latin. Ffyc. Ffyc!
Before the man could finish, Teagan threw her last knife at him, striking his throat with a satisfying gurgle. His spell couldn’t be completed, and that gave her enough of a reprieve to stand and run toward the treeline. She whistled in a pattern, one that she and the other inhabitants of the lake settled on. Over and over again, she repeated it until she heard the woman’s voice again, confirming what she needed: that she was following and steering away from the lake. “Hurry and follow me! She’s getting away!”
Teagan wasn’t sure who she was talking to, but she didn’t have time to look back. Not that it mattered anyway. The familiar force from only a few moments ago returned, pulling her to the ground with enough power to force the air out of her lungs. It burned, like a fire igniting as she pushed herself to stand. Again, she was taken back down, a body straddling her a second later as the female caster finally caught up.
“Your kind don’t like iron, do they?” Teagan tried to drive her head forward for an attack, but couldn’t move. Her widened eyes caused a bark of laughter to escape the caster, the sound growing louder as she pressed the iron blade slowly into Teagan’s side. She cried softly, not willing to give the satisfaction of a true sound of pain. Her vision was beginning to blur, her body already aching incredibly at the amount of damage she had sustained in such a short amount of time.
When the hilt finally reached her skin, the woman tore it out, the sudden rip refocusing Teagan sufficiently to find control of her limbs. With the last bit of energy she had, she caught the caster’s wrist just before it plunged into her chest, twisting it with a crunch and sending it back to its wielder. Instead of making its original mark, Teagan had successfully given it a new one, allowing it to find home in the caster’s throat. She met a similar end as her friend, which was poetic in a way, but with a new set of voices incoming, Teagan thought it would be best to move on.
She ran, ignoring her exhaustion, the way her body begged for her to sit still and rest. If she were to make it out alive, she couldn’t listen, she had to shut her ears off and use every last bit of energy to get to that one door. The only place she could think of, the one that she felt safest.
Patricia’s door, that brown Teagan had grown so fond of came into view, and she knocked frantically. “P-Pa…! Patricia…!” She gasped, choking and sputtering as she collapsed, gripping her side. The blood covered Teagan’s stomach and leg, and she felt her eyes growing heavy just as her body met cold tile harshly when the door opened. The last thing she saw were those velvet eyes she adored. Even if it was the last thing she saw, she was happy with that fact. She didn’t have to be alone. Not this time.

Farmer' fight for Right to Repair gets little traction in Illinois
During the 2023 harvest season, one of Jake Lieb’s tractors quit working. A week later, his combine stopped working, too. Both were new — and he was locked out from making any repairs himself because of software restrictions embedded in the machines.
Instead, a technician from John Deere was dispatched to diagnose and repair the problems. While waiting for the technician to come out, Lieb fired up a 20-year-old tractor he hadn’t used for harvesting in years. Crops are vulnerable to the weather, and had he not, Lieb could have lost at least a day of harvest. Some of the crop might have dropped to the ground, rendering it unsalvageable, potentially costing him thousands of dollars.
“Meanwhile,” Lieb said, “we’ve got over a million dollars of equipment in the field, inoperable.”
When the technician from John Deere arrived at his farm in central Illinois, it took about 30 minutes total to plug in a diagnostic tool, see which sensor was bad, unscrew it, replace it and close everything up in the combine.
“If I knew what sensor was bad in that combine, I could have had it fixed in five minutes,” Lieb said. “But if you don’t have the software, it’s impossible to know what’s wrong.”
For more than a decade, farmers like Lieb haven’t been able to fix their high-tech equipment. Until recently, manufacturer restrictions meant only company-authorized representatives could own and use diagnostic tools and make fixes when needed.

In March 2023, in an attempt to address farmers’ frustrations, the American Farm Bureau Federation signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with John Deere and four other farm equipment manufacturers. The farm bureau called it a “private-sector solution to the right to repair issue.”
In the agreement, Deere, Kubota, Case New Holland, AGCO, and CLAAS of America promised to give farmers and independent repair shops access to customer diagnostic tools. In exchange, the Farm Bureau agreed not to support any federal or state repair legislation.
However, advocates for repair legislation say that the nonbinding agreement and the customer versions of tools provided by the companies fall short of needed protections that legislation would ensure. These same advocates are supporting bills across the country, including one introduced this year in the Illinois Senate.
The Illinois bill (SB2669) proposes to establish an agricultural equipment bill of rights. It would require manufacturers to make software, firmware and all other tools needed to repair machines accessible to independent repair shops and owners throughout the state at a reasonable cost.
The bill directly addresses the MOU and says that agricultural equipment owners are entitled to any tools or software not covered by the MOU. The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Jil Tracy, R-Quincy, declined to comment after multiple attempts by email and in person to reach her. Deere and the other farm equipment manufacturers also did not return multiple requests for comment.
The bill is languishing at the statehouse. According to a spokesperson from the Illinois Corn Growers Association in an email to Investigate Midwest, there’s no chance the bill will pass this year.
The cost of repair
The demand for new tractors and combines ebbs and flows, but a consistent source of profit growth for John Deere is the sale of parts and services. Despite a 19% drop in sales of new ag equipment sales from between 2013 and 2019, supply chain disruptions and food system upheaval in 2020, and a monthlong labor strike of 10,000 workers across five states in 2021, Deere’s profits swelled the past three years, totaling a nearly 270% increase from 2020, according to the company’s SEC filings.
According to Bloomberg, the sale of parts helped buoy the company’s portfolio — parts sales grew by 22% between 2013 to 2019.
While Lieb’s fifth-generation family farm operates on annual tractor trade-ins so his machines stay on a warranty, which includes free parts and services, he’s in the minority. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, only 20% of farmers in the U.S. regularly buy new machines.
The rest hold on to their equipment for longer periods of time or buy secondhand machines, which come with limited warranties or none at all, making repair restrictions more consequential.
Equipment made before 2014 doesn’t have as much complicated software, and there are more repair workarounds. Still, the costs of repairing older machines add up.
I once knew some of the owners of John Deere Tractors. They're living all plush and cozy, up in Aspen.

Michiya || MM || For the Future
Michiya never wanted to let go of Kezia. In their earthy cocoon, they were safe. But they both knew this battle was far from over. They part, and Michiya can't help but admire the love of his life as she fractures cognition itself in her rampage against Apocalypse. She was strong in so many ways, and that strength offered a platform for others to find their footing. Seeing such ferocity reminds Michiya of his own...
Should he really be spending these moments free falling into the void reminiscing? Who said he couldn't?! Hinrik's escape rang through his bright pink veins, reminding him of everything he has been. A scared child, biting back at the world that chewed him up. A bitter teenager, unsure of his place in the big world. A mad scientist with all the freedom in the big, scary, wide wide world, but at the cost of any meaningful connection. Kezia truly was the beginning to all of that, wasn't she?
But it wasn't just her. There was Hinrik, who was soft and loving and kind, despite the pain they've inherited by bitter blood. There was Ridley, whose gentle heart threatened to tear her in twain when she finally lost what she loved most. Royce who offered a guiding hand; he was a man that Michiya wanted to hold on tightly to, just to let him go.
Emmeline showed Michiya what strength and family meant, that no matter what happened, she had loved ones she would never stop fighting for. Jules sought the truth, and always had their feet on the ground. Tracy has messed up, sure, but Michiya couldn't help but see himself in the other. Would Michiya had been in Tracy's shoes if given the chance? Would he have been in Wren's, who fought so hard to keep connections severed for the future, only to fall under the weight of his own past?
Michiya never understood that when he gave into the world's demands, he was allowing himself to be prey, devoured and disposed of...  but Morph showed him there was no shame in that. You persevere, and you overcome. Pet was a dominating power, but underneath it all Michiya could see a fracture of himself: someone so tired of being alone... Someone who searched for meaning, and freedom. Oz scared him, and he felt he never could quite close the gap between the two of them, but he knew everyone cared for him, and that was enough.
They all were more than enough. Michiya had to be strong enough to fight back because they all gave him the strength to. He feels at peace, almost, falling free into the void. Energy begins to peel away at him as his body splits in two, but the person who's at the other end of Michiya's arm is not quite himself. Completely human in image, a man who looks nearly identical stares back at him. Michiya can't speak, lips moving but no words coming out. Kisuke looks down towards Apocalypse, then back at Michiya, who began to spark with overwhelming emotion.
"... This could be a figment of your imagination."
The voice similar to Michiya's says in his recognizable monotone.
"Your mind may be fracturing to the point of no return."
Tears welled up in Michiya's eyes as he gripped tightly onto his other half.
"... Maybe Death gave you the opportunity to say goodbye. Whatever happened, don't squander this moment."
Kisuke(?)'s voice raised as the field around the two of them began to spark, whipping around them as they fell closer towards Kezia's position. Kisuke gives his brother a soft smile. One of understanding.
"I never took you for someone to get obsessed with the past! You've always looked towards the future because you knew the future has everything you've ever dreamed of! So stop worrying about your mistakes and learn from them! Protect the future you have right before you!"
Michiya pulls the other into his arms as his body quickly tears away into the large robotic fox cryptic form. Kisuke's voice continues as he begins to glow the same purple as Michiya.
"Just because I'm not by your side, doesn't mean I'm gone! Royce isn't gone! Wren isn't gone! Eden won't be gone, and neither will Ivette! You'll always carry them with you, no matter what happens! So live your life the way they would have wanted you to!"
The ghostly twin explodes into a wave of energy, splitting and crackling into a lupine shape. Michiya grins a wide toothy grin, using Kezia's fractures as a launchpad to throw himself in an arc over their enemy. Once Michiya and the fox that dances around him have a better angle, he shoots robotic arms to grab onto the dangerous cryptic in any way he can. He finds a grip on the grotesque wings of Apocalypse, he splits himself again, two large rabid foxes now slingshotting themselves towards the indomitable force. If enough of the others are focused on Ivette, Michiya will go on the offensive.
Like missiles, Michiya and his split hurl themselves, razor sharp claws extended, energy surging like an atom bomb about to drop. Whether that man was Kisuke, or just Michiya's mind seeking escape after all this time, he takes his words to heart. Once contact is made, Michiya explodes in a wide burst, electricity crackling, heat coming off in waves as from the smoke leaves the humanoid form of the scientist, exhaling, exhausted.
He'll fight for a future with Kezia. To visit Ridley, and Jules. To make amends with all those he's hurt. To have movie nights, and barbeques, and see a happier world he never thought possible for him. For words no one else gets to hear, he finally says it.
"Goodbye, and thank you for everything."
