My first dream cosplay come true!!! 😍
Tumblr media
Oh man. This is the outfit I wanted to have (buy? make?) before I ever knew cosplay was a thing people did. I mean, I knew carnaval, where people dress up as random jobs or animals and such, but character specific dress-up was not something that was explicitly done. (well, besides politicians and celebrities, but that was mostly to mock). So ever since I went to my first convention and saw the first cosplayers, I knew I wanted to finally cosplay the white mage from Final Fantasy Tactics! (my first ever Final Fantasy game as well~ )
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was sewn by both me and my mum. The patterns were done by me and were a combination of existing patterns and some weird new additions. It exists out of a sleeveless long dress and a cape that was basically the sleeves, a floor-length back, a big hood and a tiny front part to close the cape. I also did most of the sewing, but tricky things like an invisible zipper, lining in the bodice part and some weird construction for the sleeves was done by her. (Since I made some… questionable construction choices, this was also the project that made her decide to enroll me for sewing classes xD )
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The material is all cotton, which is both a joy to work with, but a nightmare to wash with these colours 😭 The original red cotton I used was hand-rinsed so many times, but still turned the white a little bit pinkish when first washed. The red fabric seen in the picture was the second fabric I tried (the first triangles had to be taken off, some parts deconstructed, new triangles cut, pinned and sewed on). I don’t really know if these also bled, but the damage was done anyway. (like, how do people wash their cosplays? Some designs I see have the same issue, but some even have parts that can’t be washed? Like… How??? )
Tumblr media
The staff was made that year as well, but I wasn’t too happy with it. So it got a revamp in 2020. Same base of PVC pipe and Styrofoam with paper mâché, but now with a better screwing mechanism and smoother finish. Tried some woodgrain painting as well, and I think it looks quite nice~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The gloves are also new from 2020. Don’t ask beginner cosplayers/sewists to sew gloves, even with more experience it’s still a nightmare! But I finally had a good pattern, the free easy gloves pattern by So Sew Easy, which I modified a little bit. I used a brown suedine for a soft leathery finish, but a felt-like lining for thickness, which also allowed the bulky look which is typical of the FFT artwork. (of which these is also, only one reference picture xD )
Tumblr media
I wore this to Gamescom 2012 for the first time and even met a Final Fantasy female thief cosplayer, but I sadly can’t find the pictures anymore.
Check below for the one and only reference picture~

Got a cosplay photo taken at Gamescom, check ✅
This was the first time I wore this cosplay to a convention, to Gamescom in 2012. Best choice ever to wear it there, because at a lots of booths they threw (or just gave xD ) free goodies. And oh boi, these sleeves are just REALLY BIG pockets 8D
The red triangles were still the first red fabric I used, and it’s a lot brighter than the replacement fabric. But it does have its charm~
Picture was taken at the cosbase booth by Christoph Gerlach. I was still new to posing, so his guidance definitely helped!

"The guild will be run from here. Visit me whenever you like."
First time photoshoot with La Volpe in 2013. And Bokrijk is just the perfect place for that. I love that even on busier days, there are more than enough spots to calmly shoot some pictures in costume~

Sunset picture for the last Hetalia cosplay I made
This was the third and last outfit for the 2-day heatwave photoshoot of 2012 @wfl-art, @cupcakekaracosplay and I did. It was not as warm as the other two, but the hike to this field was still a challenge.
The photo-folder for this cosplay was a lot smaller than the previous two and I just realized/remembered why. We had a bit of a scare that day! While we were being silly and taking pictures, a military jeep suddenly showed up. It was at the other side of the field, quite far away, so we just kept doing what we were doing. After a while, three or four guys in full uniform stepped out and talked a little among themselves. Until suddenly, in the empty space of that half-mowed field, we heard the echoing sound of a gun cocking…
.
.
.
We, eh, booked it then xD (like yeah nuh-uh, fuck that shit I’m out)
We survived xD and still got these pics, so I’m not complaining too hard (and derp picture is under the cut!)

It's the dancing samurai Gakupo, Hyaah!
It's the second cosplay that was mainly made by my mom. Just like the last one, she sewed everything, while I helped with patterns and materials. But hoo boy, we learned a lot on this costume. Application, working with bias tape, using online patterns, fabric painting, the whole shebang.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really love the details. Some aren't as visible when wearing the complete costume though.
The painting of the shirt was very tricky. It was a white, non-natural fiber sport shirt, so the initial wash machine dyeing was... not as bright as I'd hoped. The panel painting was done by brushing it on, but the fabric sucked it up so much and so fast, I had to buy extra paint.
Tumblr media
It's also the first time I've worn a proper, non-carnival wig. And of course, I had to start with a long one xD . It did teach me to properly secure wigs , so that's good!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The accessories were made mainly with cardboard and foamboard. Back then, I just used whatever I had at home, so it was nothing too fancy or expensive. (though I have to say, studying architecture at an art school made sure I had plenty of cardboard and paint!)
We also made many mistakes xD That's why I remade the costume not even a year later. The first few pictures are actually of the newer costume (with the exception of the painted t-shirt and most props), because I don't have the first version anymore. The only (proper) picture of the first costume is in the group picture! But I like the newer one better, with the proper purple and a not-so-floppy collar xD
Tumblr media
This old picture was taken at Hasshin 2010 in Antwerp. I'm happy we all decided to do a Vocaloid group cosplay and even if it was a weird con...at least we got this picture!
Kamui Gakupo by me~ Kagamine Rin by @shinybumofleonardodavinci KAITO by @wfl-art Hatsune Miku by @katyuna Megurine Luka by @whenwolfbaneblooms
I do not have the socials of the rest (nor the photographer) but if somebody knows, let me know~
Reference picture is below the read more.
This was one of the only reference pictures at the time. There are many newer ones, but I never got to use those xD
Tumblr media
I still love Vocaloid music. You have to get used to it a little bit, but some were/are so damn good.

"𝔽𝕠𝕝𝕝𝕠𝕨 𝕞𝕖. 𝔹𝕦𝕥 𝕨𝕖 𝕞𝕦𝕤𝕥 𝕞𝕠𝕧𝕖 𝕗𝕒𝕤𝕥! 𝕋𝕙𝕚𝕟𝕜 𝕪𝕠𝕦 𝕔𝕒𝕟 𝕜𝕖𝕖𝕡 𝕦𝕡?" The Villers abbey of Villers-la-Ville is such an awesome place. So when @neon.cosplayphotography , @zoef_costumes and @simon_sprite_ (all on instagram) invited me in 2014 to go shoot there, I was super happy! The ruins are perfect for an Assassin’s Creed cosplay. And even if I am not that good in climbing / parkour, I did my best anyway. No windowsill to high to get those perfect shots! (Jk, those places were manageable/semi-accessible . Most places were indeed way too high! ) Costume by me Pictures by @neon.cosplayphotography

Matryoshka Gakupo cosplay, made by yours truly~
What if the cosplay requires a really cool hoodie, but you don’t have the skills (yet) to make an entire hoodie out of scratch? Just buy one and adjust it! The only difficulty there is finding a hoodie in the correct colour xD
This was made in 2011, when making hoodies was still very difficult for me, but making patches wasn’t. The adjustments are mainly fabric patches with satin stitched borders, vlies-o-fix backs (to iron them on the hoodie) and some fabric paint for the details. For the eyes of the smiley on the back I used some yellow sateen to give it some nice shine~ It’s slightly easier to make them separately, so an entire hoodie doesn’t get in the way of the small details.

For the references and a funky song, check under the read more~
While Matryoshka is one of the older Vocaloid songs out there, it is still so iconic. It remains so much fun to listen to~ (swipe all the way to the back to hear the beginning 8D ). So many covers exist and I just love the Gakupo version, both the cover and the outfit. I don’t know who designed Gakupo, so if you know, plz tell me~

The original song is マトリョシカ (Matryoshka) with GUMI and Hatsune Miku, made by Hachi.

Best thing about castles? Epic cosplay photo’s, ayyyy~
This was the second outfit for the 2-day heatwave photoshoot of 2012 @wfl-art, @cupcakekaracosplay and I did. It was during the hottest moment of the day, so it was quite warm with this outfit. A good thing the corridors we could use were very cool (but too dark to take proper pictures T-T ).

Fifth and last outfit from Axis Powers Hetalia, Nyotalia Prussia!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is also the first female cosplay I did! I usually didn’t really identify with most female characters or liked the outfits they wear, but Nyotalia made that a lot easier for me. Like Mochitalia, Nyotalia are the nyotaika (male-female genderbents) versions of the characters. And since I (obviously xD ) like Prussia a lot, this was only a small step~
Tumblr media
This outfit was made alongside the previous outfit, since most of the fabric and stylization is the same. The T-shirt fabric is stretch with a pretty pattern, but had to be used double layered to prevent it being see-through. I did make the collar detachable, but mostly because that was easier for me than adjusting the t-shirt to include a collar. The long white boots are bootcovers over a simple high heel. The laces are black elastic to make sure they could be laced up and tight, without giving up the movement needed for my knees. There is a zipper at the heel, so I could use the shoes for other cosplays as well. The jabot and sash were the same ones I made for the male counterpart. Only the miniskirt was bought.
Tumblr media
The group picture is from Made in Asia Brussel in 2012. With Male!Hungary (by zoef_costumes on Instagram), Female!Austria (by wflartbeta on Instagram) and South Korea!
Tumblr media
Like the last one, the outfit is not very historically accurate. (miniskirt? On a battlefield?) But this outfit had more than one reference picture! … (there were 2 reference pictures xD , click below to see them~) …

Outfit number 4 from Axis Powers Hetalia, Prussia’s Austrian Succession outfit~
Tumblr media
This had been the first time I made an outfit with so many details. Fancy buttons, lace trim, other gold looking trims and actually choosing fabrics for the way they complete the look, instead of just buying the cheapest fabric of the right colour. I wanted it to look absolutely fabulous and I think I quite succeeded.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most historical Hetalia outfits are very loosely based on the actual historical clothing of the time they represent. But since this one was… nowhere near accurate, I just went with the one (1!) reference picture and searched for patterns that came close to that. The jacket needed a lot of adjustments to the pattern, but was simple enough to make these possible. I used a not too heavy cotton in combination with a red terlenka for a partial lining at the bottom and a cherry suedine for the cuffs and collar. Sateen trimmings, white lace and gold coloured buttons were used for the details.
Tumblr media
Since some webcomic panels included a cape with this outfit, I wanted a cape! I used the same cherry suedine as the cuffs and collar to make it. A waistcoat pattern is easy to find and this one was made with a cotton blend with a light shine to it. The pants and shirt were bought. The hat was also bought and further detailed. I used the same combat boots I’ve been using with most past cosplays. They are very versatile and comfortable to wear.
Since I was making this outfit nearly parallel with another very similar one, I made the sash and jabot to fit both the outfits. Way better than making two sashes and jabots! (The similar outfit will be posted very soon~)
Tumblr media
The last picture is from Atsusacon in 2012. Con pictures are not the best quality, but they are fun~
And check the read more for the one (1) reference picture~
not even a face xD

The second outfit for Prussia that I made, his Halloween outfit~
I was really happy with the Halloween outfit that was designed for Prussia, since hoodies are still way simpler than some other outfits that get designed. So this time, I made the actual hoodie myself! It wasn’t easy, but not measuring correctly and not knowing how to properly install a zipper makes things more difficult than they are. Whoops. Good thing the satin stitching saved the day, because I still really like those details~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hoodie and the tail were the only things I made in 2011. They were made out of fleece, since that was still the fabric I was most comfortable with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The T-shirt was made a few years later, when I finally found striped jersey fabric with broad stripes instead of the smaller ones (and learned how to sew with knits).
Tumblr media
The fork was made in 2011 with PVC pipes and paper maché. It was not that great, so I remade it back in 2017 (dremeling off paper maché makes such a mess xD ). I still have to do some painting, so it's not sealed yet. (one day, one day for sure!)
The reference pictures are below the read more~
He's such a little devil, it suits him perfectly 8D

Still not Halloween, but we’re getting closer!
A lot of fandoms have their specific Halloween or holiday outfits, but with Vocaloid it’s extra special. Because most of the fancy new outfits are nowhere near official and made by fans who dare to go over the top! (Which also makes it more difficult to get proper reference pictures T-T oh well~ )
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While Gakupo’s outfit for Dream Meltic Halloween was fairly simple, it was also a mix of historical costume research, creative liberty and educated guesses. Since Gakupo usually wears traditional Japanese clothes, I picked a Hapi pattern as jacket and bought folkwearsewing pattern nr. 129 as a proper historical starting point. This was made in white thick cotton, dyed completely yellow and then double dip dyed green on a stove top with @dylon_uk fabric dye packets. After that, the spiderwebs were painted on with fabric paint. The butterflies an spiders are a black terlenka fabric ironed on with vlies-o-fix and satin-stitched to stop the fraying (the spider legs are satin-stitched as well).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the bandages around the middle I opted for a shirt instead (for obvious reasons 👀 ). It’s a shirt with a zipper at the back, since the fabric used was a light cotton without any stretch. The front panel has strips of cotton bandages stitched over the area, to make it an easy cosplay to wear. The cross necklace is a regular cross I bought and then just turned upside down xD
Check under the read more for the only reference picture of Gakupo in this outfit and a video of the song.

The song is ドリィムメルティックハロウィン (Dream Meltic Halloween) by Machigerita-P and Tawashi.

The master thief of Florence, ready to steal your heart~❤
Nah just kidding… unless?
(unless you’re the pope or a descendant of the Borgia’s, amirite?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This foxy old man was definitely fun to cosplay and actually a lot of fun to make! Compared to older games, this character had so many reference pictures that I could even replicate the details all over his costume. This was also made while I was starting sewing classes, where they had overlock machines. It made finishing the cape a whole lot easier (and faster!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really liked La Volpe’s cape, So I tried to replicate that as best as I could. The 3 layers were patterned separately to have a better view on it all. It’s all made with brown suedine for the soft leather-like look, with interfacing to make parts more ridged and decorative stitches at the sides. The “shirt” has a loosely woven yellow fabric for the main body, but a tightly-woven, slightly stretchy rusty-orange cotton for the sleeves. The stripes are bias tape made out of the same fabric, with all those little dots hand-stamped on. The lace are separate strips that can be snapped on, so I didn’t had to make an undershirt just for those 3 parts of lace! Same for one of the leather belts, but that was mostly because I had no idea how those were supposed to connect at the back. Only the pants (and shoes, but not shoecover-thingies) were bought.
Tumblr media
I found those rose buttons by coincidence, but damn, they are just a perfect little detail.
The reference pictures are below the read more, along with some progress pictures and convention shots~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Non-retro game characters have so much more reference pictures. So many detailed shots! But that also means more details xD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really wanted to make the outfit for F.A.C.T.S. 2012, because I knew Rick and Dominique Boer from @rbfproductionsnl (on instagram) would be there at the @assassinscreed stand with their AC cosplays. When I saw there was a possibility for pictures, you’re damn right I took that chance!
And ofcourse, some Molto Bene content~ (where I advertised @madmodesty 's shop to the entire Japan Expo Brussels congoers xD )

These are some of my favourite pictures that were taken during one of the first “photoshoots” @wfl-art, @cupcakekaracosplay and I did. It was in the summer of 2012 with various other Hetalia cosplays (which I will hopefully post soon). And the best time to do a first time 2-day photoshoot marathon… is during a heatwave! Because of course we did xD
It was also quite a hike to get to that field, through a forest with the biggest ants ever, but I still think it was worth it!
