Going to talk about the state of Dutch politics again. If you ever pay attention to them, please let it be now.
So like. We're now about 18 hours after the polls closed. The PVV has gained 2 more seats than even the exit polls estimated. The major left-wing parties have both immediately positioned themselves as opposition parties, so unless a big shift happens, the slight hope for a center government is pretty much shot through. We are looking at a (far) right cabinet that is going to do their best to fuck everything up and reverse even the little bits of progress that the past half a dozen or so center-right cabinets still managed to pull off.
And yeah I know that Wilders has been acting like he's going to be "milder" than he's been in the past. And I know that half of what the PVV wants they can't do from a simple constitutional and legal standpoint. But the fact is that they got 37 out of 150 seats. Almost a quarter of our electorate. OVER 2.4 MILLION PEOPLE, are apparently willing to agree with the hateful, islamophobic, racist, queerphobic, climate-denying, insane fucking ideas of Geert Wilders and his PVV. Or at the very least, they're willing to be okay with it. Sure not all of them will agree, but a FUCKING QUARTER OF OUR POPULATION is willing to say "okay yeah I'm fine with you saying those things. I'm fine with you implementing these ideas." And that's not even considering those who voted for other parties that hold similar ideals.
That's the worst part of all this to me. I am dreading a far right government. I am dreading which changes they WILL be able to implement. But above all I'm terrified of knowing that over a quarter of our fucking country is just, okay with it. A quarter of the country is willing to vote for the "less morrocans" guy. A quarter of the country is willing to vote for the guy wanting to ban islam. Wanting to pretty much stop taking in any refugees and sending them all back. Wanting to ban fucking LGBT education and what not. I am not even close to being their primary target. Sure I'm trans and queer and what not. But I'm still white and Dutch. I fear not just for myself. I fear way more for those in this country who look at this election, and see a party who downright says they don't belong here. They will face more hate. And I can't do much about that. But the least I can do is not shut up. I can try and show them that there are still plenty people here who do stand with them. And while I don't agree with him on some things, I do agree with Frans Timmermans in saying that at this point, we need to stand up straight, we need to look at the people who feel they might not belong in this country, and tell them we Have. Their. Backs.
And I know there's more shit going on in the world. I know most people on this site don't care much for Dutch politics. But I need to talk about it for once because honestly it's fucking terrifying. We looked on when Trump got elected. We spread your news on all that. Maybe this once, now our own Trump has pretty much won here, you'll look to our country, and at least, see what's going on. It might not be a war or anything on that order of magnitude. But it still fucking matters

- Saturday, refugee centre Ter Apel in the north of the Netherlands will once again be the scene for a display of xenophobia and racism by far right politician Geert Wilders who will be supported by the alt-right nationalists of the NVU.
We will also take to the streets on Saturday to raise an alternative voice, namely: refugees are welcome in the north, and we need more accessible application locations throughout the country in addition to Ter Apel, to make the situation more humane. It is our responsibility to take care of each other.
Come to Heemker Akkerstraat 18 Ter Apel on Saturday, June 3 at 2:30 p.m. to make your voice heard!

Like???

What happened in The Netherlands?
The Dutch elections have created a shockwave in The Netherlands, Europa and beyond. Rightfully so, because the results of the elections were beyond shocking.
For those who wonder what happened, I'd like to try and explain it. First of all, elections in The Netherlands are not managed by districts. All votes count the same and each party that would get 1 seat (out of 150) or more earns a place in parliament.
Tumblr media
This is the second electoral shockwave within 1 year in The Netherlands. Earlier in March, when the provincial parliaments were elected, the 'BBB' won: the party for farmers. This time the 'PVV' won: the Party For Freedom. All the blue areas were the areas where the PVV won, the red areas had the most votes for the combined Labour/Greens-list, blue is the conservative-liberal party, yellow is a center-right party and orange is a very conservative Christian party, that only won 3 seats, but did win some municipalities.
What does the PVV stand for? The PVV is a conservative party, against immigration, climate action, lgbti-people and mainly the islam. They are against the EU. The party is seen as far-right, but during campaigns they also focus on left-wing subjects, such as healthcare and salaries.
The PVV was founded in 2006, by Geert Wilders. In 17 years, they never entered the government, though they did carry responsibility between 2010 and 2012, when they supported a conservative right-wing government, that ended because Wilders did not support them anymore.
The PVV, despite the name, has just 1 member: Geert Wilders himself. The party is notorious for having controversy about people on their list. They had a man who peed in a mailbox, someone who was accused of forcing his wife to have sex with his security and Wilders himself was convicted for racist remarks, when he made a crow cheer they wanted less Moroccan people in The Netherlands. Wilders was also awarded a 'friend of Russia' price by Putin, and despite the fact that the PVV says to support Ukraine, they are against real support for the Ukrainian people.
Tumblr media
All the above makes it hard for me to understand why people would vote for his party. Still, there must be reasons. Plenty of people that I know voted for the PVV, and very few of them are racists. Then why would they vote for a racist party?
I guess the answer is, that a lot of people don't feel that the welfare that the general Dutch society has, has landed at the right places. Like in the US, there is a lot in inequality in The Netherlands.
So currently, some parties are negotiating a new government. The PVV, the liberal-conservative VVD, the center-conservative NSC and the populistic farmers party BBB. They absolutely don't think the same about climate, migration or even basic human rights. Still, it currently seems to where were standing, even if these negotiations are already proving to be one of the longest in Dutch history. If this coalition will happen, it will be a dark time for lgbti+ people, for the climate or for migrants. Racism is growing in The Netherlands and it deeply saddens me.
Already, transcare, nature resoration and a growth of minimum wage have been put on hold. I could mention many more things. But we will need to see what happens. A sad time for sure.

There's been a great amount of consternation over the results of the November 22nd elections in the Netherlands. Much of the hysteria comes from people who know nothing about Dutch politics or how the constitutional system works there.
We see news stories in Anglophone media saying that Geert Wilders and his far right PVV party "won" the election.
It's true that the PVV won more seats than any other single party there. However what's often left out is that the PVV won just 37 seats in the lower house of the Dutch parliament (called the Tweede Kamer) out of a total of 150 seats. A governing majority requires 76 seats and the PVV is 39 seats short of that. The PVV simply cannot govern by itself.
Politics in the Netherlands is quite fragmented. And because of an overly strict system of proportional representation for the Tweede Kamer, a lot of little shit parties representing narrow interests manage to win seats. 15 parties won seats in the recent election.
The outgoing VVD (24 seats) and the GLPVDA (25 seats) have already said they would not join a coalition with Wilders's PVV. The new NSC (20 seats) has been very iffy; its leader said he would not support the PVV's anti-Islamic policies which would violate the Dutch constitution. Don't expect DENK, (3 seats), an immigrant rights party, to join a PVV coalition. VOLT (2 seats) is a pro-EU party which would not likely join in a coalition led by Wilders who is anti-EU. The SP (5 seats) is a socialist party diametrically opposed to the PVV. D66 (9 seats) is a socially progressive and its membership would probably not be comfortable in a Wilders-led coalition.
So if you add up the seats for parties which may have reservations about the PVV, it's a clear majority.
Tumblr media
HOWEVER, Wilders may try to entice one some of those parties with pledges of moderation; though that may not sit well with hardliners in his own party.
Another possibility would be for the GLPVDA, VVD, NSC, and D66 to try to form a government. They do have 78 seats, two more than needed for a majority. Though in Dutch politics it wouldn't look good for the party with the largest number of seats to be left out of government.
A more likely possibility would be for the VVD or NSC to prop up a Wilders government without joining it. This way they would not be tainted by direct association with him and could pull the rug out from under him if he becomes too extreme.
One last option is simply to string out coalition negotiations while a caretaker runs the country. It usually takes about three months to form a government under normal circumstances in the Netherlands. But in 2017 it took a record 225 days to do so. In neighboring Belgium it took 589 days to form a government back in 2010-2011.
So people freaking out over Geert Wilders should dial down their stress levels at least a bit. Even if he becomes prime minister he'll be limited in what he can do. Though this election should serve as a warning to other democratic countries not to take things for granted.

If you ask me, pro-Palestine protests helped Geert Wilders success in the elections.
These protests put the obnoxiousness of the left and Muslim immigrants on full display. This alienated people, and opened them up to the PVV's far right agenda. Not to mentioned that he fully supports Israel.

Also to the people who aren't from the Netherlands, being like "good job electing a fascist Netherlands. Time to never go there bla bla you fucked yourself up!" Shut up. Go fuck yourself. Yes. They got a quarter of the votes. Yes it fucking sucks. But first of, three quarters of the country still didn't vote for him. And secondly. WE DON'T FUCKING NEED YOU TRYING TO PUSH US DOWN EVEN MORE.
If you're going to speak on what's going on, yes recognise this fucking sucks. But how about instead of blaming the whole damn country, you try and stand with the people who didn't vote for Wilders. Stand with the people who will be his victims. How about instead of just blaming everyone, you simply stand against the shit and with those who need fucking support right now. And if you can't do that, if all you want to do is bitch at us about it, just don't. We have enough of that already. We don't need to be pointing blame.
