Daily excerpt from today's writing, chapter 89 of Underline the Black:

'I know you're not an omega,' Enris said, 'but you can probably imagine that the people I meet in my job who have terrible scars at the back of their necks are omegas. And I think the advice I give them applies here too. Your scars are important in that they show the journey you've been on in your life, but they're also yours. Yours to feel ashamed of if that's what you feel. But also yours to accept, live with, and work on. Over time, there's scar minimisation treatments, but you'll never truly be rid of it. You can hide it for the rest of your life, but you don't have to. You seemed excited about a fade with curls at the top, and I can do that. I've done fades for Caleb, and that was an area of hairdressing I was personally interested in before I became a nurse. You aren't going to see that scar, and I can angle the mirror so you don't have to see it with me. But I can tell you now that it's not as bad as you think it is. It's not pretty, but it's not bad.' 'Other people are going to see it and think I'm an omega.'  'No one here,' Enris said. 'And it's winter, so if you go out in public with Dr Gary or anyone else, you can wear a scarf and hide it. Look at it this way, you've said you've always wanted a fade, you can try it once and hair always grows, so you can then hide it for the rest of your life if you hate the experience. What do you say?'  Efnisien nodded. 'Okay, I want to try.'

omg Pia, I was abt to send this ask gushing about Temsen and how much I look forward to him chewing Gary out.... and also to ask you what kind of fae you think he'd be. *crickets* Um. I have no excuses, I DO read the nascent diplomat. I'm just dumb it seems XD So, alternative question: how come he and Enris are tagged in UtB but not in TND which is their origin story? (Love both to death!!♥)

There are two answers to this.

The first is that Temsen didn't exist when I first did the tags for The Nascent Diplomat, I literally invented him on the day he appears in the story, and that's like... /thinks/ I've been releasing one chapter a month for a long time, so that was like well after a year of the story being published.

The same with Radula Enris, who I just thought of as a side character who wouldn't matter much.

But secondly, and probably more importantly, I just don't tag my OCs a lot of the time because they don't actually help searches and that's the primary function of a tag on AO3 (aside from the silly/jokey ones, which I still think can help with tone, like 'Augus 'kingfucker' Each Uisge'). I tagged my OCs into Underline the Black because by then I knew that people liked Temsen a lot, for example, and I knew he was going to be a character.

By and large I don't tag OCs because firstly a lot of people reading fic don't like stories with too many OCs, and secondly because it doesn't really help with the search function. No one can search for an OC they've never heard of for example, and the people who do like that OC are likely already reading my stories. Augus and Gwyn imho are different, because they are core characters that people can and do search for.

Tl;dr - People don't search for tagged OCs they don't know the name of and Temsen didn't exist/Enris was only intended to be a fringe character when I tagged The Nascent Diplomat.

(Also lol that's so understandable though re: 'what kind of fae would Temsen be' this is so something my brain would do lmao).

I think that's everyone!! At least so far. This is very much an 'FFS AU' for me, especially since Gary, the main love interest, didn't exist prior to it. But it also pulls so many characters from that story, and two couples form two separate stories in this universe.

I may be bringing in other characters but I'm not sure when, at this stage. It's a pretty robust 'cast.' And it was really fun to turn two vench into humans!!

I was the most unsure about Caleb and Faber for a long time, I didn't know how people would feel about like another original romance, especially because I both really wanted to write it, and wasn't feeling Augus/Mosk in this as much as I was in Smoke in Autumn. But I'm really invested in Caleb and Faber, I like the challenges of their dynamic, and I think they have such an intense dynamic arc, even though several years of their connection is spent apart-while-working-together.

But yeah, it's definitely a multi-cast event! :D :D

'Can you feed from Gwyn now?' 'I always could – just a little – from the both of you. I do not need touchspeak to feed, only intimacy. It is not the same quality of food as with the vench, it is like the shell of the food rather than the food itself. But with Gwyn it is now more like a food of its own. Something new. I suspect he feeds from me too, in his own way.' Gwyn looked ahead and didn’t react.  'I think Gwyn's healing can be accelerated now,' Temsen said, sighing softly, 'and the timing is auspicious, for Odayi and the others do not want you here much longer.' 'The vench want us gone?' Gwyn said.  'No, not all the vench. Some would have you stay longer. Radula Enris. Kithkalkith Kimerrin. Even myself, though I am of two minds. We all agree your magic must be healed to at least what it was before, if not to a better state.'  'Will you... Will you please teach me how to hold energy like you do?' Gwyn said.

I love Temsen so much, and that we get to see him as vench in Nascent Diplomat and then human in Underline the Black is the best of both worlds. Does he have a partner in Underline?

Oooo, Temsen doesn't have a partner in Underline the Black! And he doesn't actually have regular lovers that often in The Nascent Diplomat either.

I don't know how exactly I imagine Temsen on the sexuality spectrum yet, I feel like he just...doesn't really care for sex that often? Peak alphas often stay single, and he's a good example of a peak alpha who has never bonded to anyone and has never been interested in bonding with anyone.

I think Temsen likes to connect with a lot of people, but isn't necessarily looking for a relationship that way in Underline the Black.

In The Nascent Diplomat I think he actually experiences a lot of nourishment / food from both singing and healing, that he's not necessarily as carnal as some of the others (like Radula Enris). But, I don't know! He's also extremely secretive and he doesn't tell me everything he's thinking, lol. :D
