Wheeling Nailers Run Winning Streat to Seven with 4-3 Victory
Tumblr media
The Wheeling Nailers were excited to return home on Friday night, and they gave the local crowd a great taste of their recent success, as they collected their seventh straight win. Wheeling stormed out to a 4-0 lead on goals by four different players, then held on for the 4-3 end result. David Drake's goal at the 3:30 mark of the second period ended up being the difference, while Tanner Laderoute, Cédric Desruisseaux, and Matt Koopman also turned on the red light. This is the sixth time all-time that the Nailers have earned seven wins in a row. The Nailers started their homestand in dynamic fashion, as they exploded for three goals in the first period. The first one came just 53 seconds into the action. Matthew Quercia entered the offensive zone, then slid a pass over to Davis Bunz, who let a wrist shot go from the right point. Tanner Laderoute got a piece of the attempt to redirect it into the cage. Wheeling's next goal came at the 11:31 mark. Justin Addamo blocked a shot, and proceeded to send Cédric Desruisseaux speeding the other way. Desruisseaux flew down the right side of the ice, then whipped a wrist shot into the left side of the goal. 3:06 after that, Matt Koopman struck with a highlight reel shorthanded tally. Koopman broke in behind the defense, and lifted a shot into the top-right corner of the net with just one hand on his stick. David Drake added to the advantage for the Nailers at the 3:30 mark of the middle frame. The blueliner stickhandled the puck through his own legs, then floated a shot, which found its way through Brandon Halverson and in. Orlando battled back with two goals in a span of 1:56 in the final five minutes of the period, as the margin became two. Tanner Dickinson lifted in the rebound of Aaron Luchuk's shot on the left side of the crease, then Luchuk set up Darik Angeli on a 2-on-1 break, which Angeli buried from the right side of the slot. The two-goal lead remained until the final minute of the contest, when the Solar Bears' Jesse Jacques blasted in a one-timer from the top of the left circle to make the score 4-3. Wheeling shut the door in the closing 38 seconds to preserve its second one-goal win in regulation this season. Taylor Gauthier earned his sixth consecutive victory in goal for the Nailers, as blocked away 22 of the 25 shots he faced. Former Nailer Brandon Halverson took the loss in his return to Wheeling with Orlando, as he made 28 saves on 32 shots. The Nailers and Solar Bears will continue their weekend series in Wheeling on Saturday night at 7:10 with the annual Pups & Pucks Game. Fans can purchase tickets to bring their dogs to the game, and there will be a special appearance by Clifford the Big Red Dog, courtesy of West Virginia Public Broadcasting. The series finale is Sunday at 4:10, in which one fan will win a free TV thanks to Walmart, odd-numbered players will skate with fans after the games, and $2 ice cream sundaes will be available for kids at Flurry's. The next Big Six Promotional Game is Pittsburgh Penguins Night on February 10th, starring two-time Stanley Cup Champion Trevor Daley. There will also be specialty jerseys, a commemorative puck giveaway, a full team post game autograph session, and more. The Wheeling Nailers, considered one of the top things to do in Wheeling, West Virginia, provide affordable family entertainment for fans throughout the Ohio Valley. Read the full article

"Rangers Break their Losing Streak in an Epic Victory Against Mets: The Game that Had Everyone Talking!"
In a historic move for Major League Baseball, all teams are now playing each other in the current season. This change aims to increase the sport’s national appeal, which has traditionally been more regionally focused. However, some of the matchups this season have raised eyebrows due to their peculiar nature. Take, for example, the New York Mets’ recent homestand, where they faced off against the…

EMEA VALORANT lead wants to eventually bring major VCT rivalry matches to local fans
Tumblr media
The 10 partnered VALORANT clubs battled in the inaugural EMEA VCT league from the recently built Coliseum inside the Messe Berlin Charlottenburg in Germany in front of rabid fans. The league's creators hope to someday take the show on the road, though it might be a while before that occurs. In an interview with EMEA VALORANT lead Daniel Ringland in the midst of the ongoing EMEA LCQ, Dot Esports asked him about the potential of taking VCT regular season matches and hosting them where the team’s loyal fan bases could show up in waves. Ringland referenced the match between BBL Esports and FUT Esports in the final week of the regular season, in a battle between the league’s two Turkish teams. “Both had individual watch parties in Istanbul, and a total of 6,000 fans turned up to watch them,” Ringland told Dot Esports. “And that’s without the players even being there, so I can only imagine that if we had FUT vs. BBL in a stadium in Istanbul, then there would have been way more than 6,000 fans and they would have been even more excited. So it’s something we would love to do.” Taking special occasion regular season matches on the road isn’t a new concept to esports; both the Overwatch League and the Call of Duty League have historically held “homestands” and “home series” respectively, giving the local fans of a franchise the opportunity to see a big rivalry match in-person without having to travel far, although those were temporarily shelved in 2020 due to the emerging COVID-19 pandemic. But these events were pivotal in creating dedicated fans for each league via an unforgettable in-person experience. Other than the previously mentioned Turkish head-to-head match, Ringland also expressed interest in potentially holding matches in France or Spain, where regional rivalries like Karmine Corp vs. Gentle Mates and Giants vs. KOI would expectedly take center stage. But don’t start planning to take time off work just yet. “It brings a lot of complexity and technical challenges that we would need to be mindful of, so I don’t think it’s something we’re likely to see anytime soon,” Ringland said. “But it would definitely be an aspiration for us to be able to take at least some games on the road, especially for those local derbies. That would be really cool.” In the interview, Ringland acknowledged the technical issues and the number of pauses seen this year as an area where “no one was satisfied.” Taking the matches on the road to new venues would increase the chances of more tech issues, but Ringland is already expecting that aspect of the broadcast experience to be “much better next year.” If that is the case, then perhaps it raises the chances of VCT EMEA going on tour sooner rather than later. Inside Adam Ruzicka’s breakout, big news for Flames and fans in Slovakia
A toast from home: “Do you know what slivovitz is?" Ruzicka asked, about to introduce a reporter to a plum-flavored brandy that is popular in his native Slovakia. "It’s homemade liquor.” It’s what we do back home; it’s traditional for us. We call it “slivo.” So that’s what they brought me.
“Everyone makes it back home.” They have their own recipes, and everybody does them. “But we just buy it from an older generation because they do it better.”
Ruzicka is looking to replicate the work of the previous generation, but now we’re talking about picking the corners of the net, not picking plums for fermenting.
Their breakout forward is one of just seven Slovaks to appear in the NHL so far this season, quite a drop-off from the days that Peter Bondra, Zdeno Chara, Marian Gaborik, Marian Hossa, and others were starring on the biggest stage.
While Montreal Canadiens rookie Juraj Slafkovsky, the first-overall draft picks this summer, is the star of the emerging crop, Robert Ruzicka is currently tied for the top scorer in this slivovitz-sipping country.
Heading into the matchup against Slafkovsky and the Habs, he has produced 16 points in 18 outings with the Flames this fall. Tomas Tatar of the New Jersey Devils boasts the same total, although he has suited up for 27 games.
Ruzicka, the strapping lad from Bratislava, has become a big story both in Cowtown and 8,000 kilometers away from where he was raised.
"He’s been excellent," praised Craig Ramsay, who spent four-plus decades around the NHL as a Selke Trophy-winning forward and later a Stanley Cup-winning assistant coach and was recruited six years ago to bring his expertise to Slovakia as skipper for the then-struggling men’s national program. "I spend every morning watching NHL highlights, so because of his success, I’ve been able to see him reasonably often.” We’re all very proud of what he’s doing and what he’s accomplishing. Everybody is very thrilled about him.
“People follow what’s going on.” In the mornings, before I can even watch the highlights, sometimes they tell me if one of our guys got a point if they played if someone was called up, etc. It’s a big deal over here what he’s doing and what all our kids are doing, and it’s very important for the country. And for me, it’s important because I see the possibility now that the younger players can look at someone like Adam and strive to be that. “It’s not an easy thing for a young man, but it’s part of the job, if you know what I mean, to be a role model.”
The 23-year-old Ruzicka, who collected an assist in Saturday’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Maple Leafs in Toronto, seems to embrace that part of it. "There are a lot of guys to look at," he pointed out. "Hossa just put a jersey up there in the rafters and is a Hall of Fame guy.” Chara just ended his career. There are a lot of guys to look at and a lot of legends to play, and I obviously want to follow in their footsteps. “There’s a big gap between them and us, who just got into the league, so we want to be the same for the next generation as well."
At the start of this season, when Ramsay was catching up on the highlights each morning, he was rarely spotting Ruzicka. Buried on the depth chart at center, he couldn’t crack Calgary’s lineup. He was scratched for 10 of the first 11 games.
Opportunity knocked when Jonathan Huberdeau was hobbled by a swollen foot, with Ruzicka getting a glimpse as the Flames’ first-line left-winger. He ran with it, and No. 63 remains a fixture on the flank from a top-nine perch.
“Rosy,” as he is known around the locker room, has since notched six goals and 10 assists. He is averaging a team-best of 0.89 points per game. (Elias Lindholm is second in that category, at 0.82 P/G.)
Ruzicka’s parents planned their recent visit around a five-game homestand and were able to see their son in a prominent role, including a spot on the second power-play unit.
They’ve since headed back to Slovakia, but he still feels plenty of support. "From everybody—my best friends, my family, a lot of guys that I grew up with, a lot of coaches that coached me," Ruzicka said. "It’s a lot of positive things, like, ‘Keep it going and ‘Don’t let up,’ stuff like that."
You can bet he is hearing the same from Darryl Sutter and the rest of the Flames’ staff. Dating back to his days in the Ontario Hockey League and his selection in the fourth round of the 2017 NHL Draft, and continuing through his stint in the minors in Stockton, consistency has always been the biggest concern with this power forward-in-training.
Slovakia’s current coach points to Slafkovsky as an example of a guy who started to build momentum and hasn’t looked back. There was never any doubting his talent, but when he debuted with the national team, Ramsay recalls that the teen winger couldn’t buy a goal in a depth role. Now an important building block for the Canadiens, Slafkovsky has four goals this fall as the NHL’s youngest player.
“We started him on the third or fourth line to see what he could do, and he was OK, he was good, but he couldn’t score,” Ramsay said. But he kept getting better. So we go to the worlds, and then next is the Olympics, and all I say is, “Kid, just shoot.” Just shoot the puck. I was praying for something good to happen, and it did. And when it did, he became the Olympic MVP at the age of 17. That’s pretty special. That’s what I’m saying: “Our guys are shy, but they can play if given the chance.”
He turns his attention back to Ruzicka, who will be making his 50th career NHL appearance in Monday’s clash with the Canadiens. "So Darryl has given him that chance, and he’s run with it."
It’s worth noting that the Flames’ up-and-comer helped pave the way for Slafkovsky’s show-off at the 2022 Winter Olympics. Before their historic bronze-medal performance in Beijing, the Slovaks needed to secure an invitation. They hosted Austria, Belarus, and Poland in a final qualifier in August 2021, with Ruzicka, a three-time representative at world juniors, skating for his senior national team for the first time.
“I was disappointed because I was turned down by a couple of our NHL guys, and we only have a few.” “They said they just couldn’t do it,” Ramsay said. “But he didn’t. He came, and he played very well. He tried like hell.
“What I saw right away from him is that he was willing to compete.” He’d compete no matter what else was going on, and he wasn’t intimidated by anything. As important as these games were to the country, nothing bothered him. “He just came to play, and that was awesome.”
Through the eyes of Tomas Prokop, a writer for Daily Sport Slovakia, Ruzicka was one of the best forwards at that last-chance qualifier. "Fans are happy that he is finally showing his talent on the NHL level," Prokop said via email. "He was a bit of a mystery to them because they saw him on world juniors, but people don’t really follow so much AHL, and he didn’t play at the IIHF Worlds so far.”
“But now they have big expectations.” “I was doing a poll on my Twitter account with 1,000 respondents, and they think that Ruzicka will have the most points this season from Slovak players in the NHL.”
No pressure, Adam.
“I try not to look at media, you know?” Ruzicka said. “It just gets in your head a little bit sometimes, so I don’t look at it at all.” Yeah, there are a lot of messages and a lot of attention right now, but I don’t want to look.
“You don’t want to get ahead of yourself.” Whatever is happening right now, you want to keep it going.
That approach, he believes, has been key to his success over the past several weeks. That, and perhaps the slivovitz?
"No, not the slivo," Ruzicka protested with a smile. "Just slivo once in a while." A well-deserved toast from home.

Magic glad to be back in Orlando, kick off homestand with win vs. Warriors
Magic glad to be back in Orlando, kick off homestand with win vs. Warriors
The Orlando Magic’s season-long seven-game homestand couldn’t have come at a better time. Especially with their road woes, most recently blowing an 11-point fourth-quarter lead in a loss to the Thunder in Oklahoma City on Tuesday, to remain winless in away games. The homestand couldn’t have started better, kicking it off with a 130-129 win over the Golden State Warriors on Thursday at Amway…

Texas Rangers-Minnesota Twins Series Preview
8.19.22-Martin Perez LHP (9-3) 2.79 ERA Vs. Dylan Bundy RHP (6-5) 4.76 ERA
8.20.22-Glenn Otto RHP (5-8) 4.96 ERA Vs. Chris Archer RHP (2-6) 4.15 ERA
8.21.22-Kohei Arihara RHP (0-1) 4.76 ERA Vs. Joe Ryan RHP (9-5) 3.92 ERA
8.22.22-Cole Ragans LHP (0-2) 5.02 ERA Vs. Sonny Gray RHP (7-3) 3.11 ERA
The Rangers At A Glance- The Texas Rangers are in a bit of disarray after a crazy week. They fired president Jon Daniels and manager Chris Woodward all within the past week. The Rangers went to two World Series under Daniels, but haven’t made the playoffs since 2016. The team recently signed Corey Seager to a $325 million deal, Marcus Semien to a $175 million contract, and Jon Gray was signed for four years. The Rangers have some good pitching in their minor league system with Jack Leiter, Cole Winn, and Kumar Rocker. The Rangers have struggled in a bad division and are (53-65) overall. They went (4-3) in their last homestand and now head to Minneapolis and Denver for a road trip. Nate Lowe has been on fire in the second half with a .346 average, five homers, and fourteen RBI. Marcus Semien is hitting just .217 since the break. The Rangers starting pitching owns an ERA of 4.36, which is twentieth in baseball. Martin Perez has had a resurgent year with a 2.79 ERA and is a free agent after this season. The bullpen has been decent with a 3.75 ERA. Joe Barlow is the closer with thirteen saves on the year. Tyler Duffey signed a minor league deal with the Rangers to be closer to home.
The Twins At A Glance- The Twins got a much-needed sweep over the Royals this week. They had Thursday off before playing the Rangers for four games. Tyler Mahle left Wednesday’s game with a shoulder issue, but an MRI didn’t show anything structurally wrong. He is day-to-day and might make his next start. Jorge Polanco didn’t play on Wednesday with a knee injury. He is day-to-day and hopeful to play on Friday night. Josh Winder, Kenta Maeda, and Bailey Ober continue to work their way back. Jose Miranda continues to stay hot with a .322 average in August with twelve RBI. Luis Arraez is hitting .345 in August and his .335 average overall is top in the big leagues. Sonny Gray has a 1.69 ERA in five starts after the All-Star Break. Caleb Thielbar has a 0.94 ERA over his last 20 games, which spans nineteen innings. Jhoan Duran has allowed a run over his past 13 2/3 innings.
What To Watch For- The Rangers took two out of three games from the Twins in Arlington in July.  The Rangers also won three out of four games last May at Target Field. Martin Perez is (0-3) with a 5.54 ERA in nine games against the Twins. He is (5-5) with a 5.45 ERA in twenty career games at Target Field. Carlos Correa has two career homers off Perez. Dylan Bundy is (7-2) with a 3.45 ERA in twelve games against the Rangers. Chris Archer is (1-3) with a 4.64 ERA in seven starts versus Texas. Brad Miller has two homers off Archer. Sonny Gray is (9-4) with a 3.18 ERA in sixteen games against the Rangers. Glenn Otto, Kohei Arihara, and Cole Ragans have not faced the Twins before. This is another winnable series for the Twins against a struggling Rangers team.

Wheeling Nailers Name 2022-23 Team Captains
Tumblr media
The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, have announced their captains for the 2022-23 season. Wheeling will have four players wearing letters to start the year - Cam Hausinger, Adam Smith, Sean Josling, and Josh Maniscalco. All four players will be alternate captains, with Hausinger and Smith wearing the "A" in all of the games, while Josling will wear the "A" at home and Maniscalco will wear the "A" on the road. Hausinger is playing in his second season with the Nailers, after finishing tied for second on the team in rookie scoring last year with 43 points, and leading the squad with nine goals during the Kelly Cup Playoffs. This is Cam's first time wearing a letter professionally, and his third time recently, as he was an alternate captain twice in juniors - once with the Kootenay Ice and once with the Red Deer Rebels. The 23-year old native of Anchorage, Alaska is under ECHL contract with Wheeling, but attended training camps with Nashville and Milwaukee. Smith is the longest tenured member of the Nailers, as he has played 123 career games with Wheeling, since he arrived in the Friendly City in 2020. Adam scored the team's first goal of the 2022-23 campaign, and is looking to build off of a career year which saw him amass 23 points and finish with a team-leading +17 rating. The 25-year old native of Sharon, Ontario will be wearing a letter for the second consecutive season. Josling is playing in his third season with the Nailers, after posting nearly a point-per-game last season, as he finished with 33 points in 36 ECHL contests. While he was originally signed by Wheeling during the offseason, Sean received an AHL contract earlier in the week from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The 23-year old native of Toronto, Ontario is wearing a letter for the first time as a pro. He previously served as an alternate captain in juniors with the Sarnia Sting. Maniscalco is playing in his second season with the Nailers and third in the organization, as he played in eight games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2020-21, before finishing first among ECHL rookie defensemen with 53 points a year ago. Josh is one of two players on the Wheeling roster under NHL contract with Pittsburgh. The 23-year old native of Perkiomenville, Pennsylvania last served as a captain, when he wore the "C" in juniors for the Dubuque Fighting Saints. The Nailers will continue their season-opening four-game homestand with two more home contests this week during Halloween Weekend. Friday night is the first Frosty Friday of the season, featuring $2 beer specials, as Wheeling hosts the Cincinnati Cyclones at 7:10. Then, Sunday is a Halloween celebration with costumes, candy and more, plus a post game skate with even-numbered players, as the Nailers face the Iowa Heartlanders at 4:10. Season memberships, Big 6 ticket plans, and single game tickets are available for the 2022-23 season by visiting wheelingnailers.com or calling (304) 234-GOAL. HARTFORD WOLF PACK PREGAME REPORT
Tumblr media
By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack  HARTFORD, CT – The Hartford Wolf Pack return home to kickstart a brief two-game homestand this evening when they welcome the Bridgeport Islanders to town for a vital game in the Atlantic Division playoff chase. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m., and coverage is available on both AHLTV and Mixlr.  Tale of The Tape: This is the eleventh of twelve meetings between the Wolf Pack and the Islanders this season. It is the fifth of six meetings between the foes at the XL Center in downtown Hartford. The sides will wrap up the season series in Hartford on Friday, April 7th. The Wolf Pack have won three in a row in the season series, most recently taking a 3-2 decision in Bridgeport on March 18th. Cole Bardreau opened the scoring 58 seconds in, snapping the night's first shot into the net for his 15th goal of the season. However, Hartford did all their damage in the middle frame, taking over the tilt for good. Jonny Brodzinski tied the affair with a powerplay goal 29 seconds in, then Ryan Carpenter gave Hartford the lead for good at 7:54, taking a centering pass from Tim Gettinger off a turnover deep in the Islander zone. Brodzinski finished the period with the eventual game-winner at 17:06, scoring his second of the night on a breakaway. Ruslan Iskhakov drew the Isles within one at 1:58 of the third period, but the Wolf Pack killed three penalties in the final at 16:41 and skated off with the two points. Hartford also won the last meeting at the XL Center by a margin of 7-5 on March 15th. As a result, both sides enter tonight's tilt with a 5-5-0-0 record head-to-head. Wolf Pack Outlook: The Wolf Pack got back into the win column with a 5-1 defeat of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Sunday in Pennsylvania. Zac Jones scored just 16 seconds in, snapping a shot from the left-wing circle that put Hartford ahead for good. Will Lockwood converted a two-on-one on a feed from Carpenter at 6:25, while Brodzinski fired home a one-timer on the powerplay at 13:33 to put Hartford ahead 3-0. Anton Blidh tacked on an insurance goal at 10:27 of the second period, while Turner Elson hit the empty net at 19:24. Louis Domingue made 27 saves for his fourth consecutive victory. It is his longest winning streak of the season. Brodzinski has thrived against the Islanders as of late. The captain scored two goals in Hartford's last three meetings with the Islanders. That includes a four-point performance (2 g, 2 a) on March 4th in a 9-0 victory at Bridgeport. Brodzinski (18 g, 23 a) and Will Cuylle (24 g, 17 a) are tied for the team lead in scoring with 41 points each. Cuylle's 24 goals are tops on the club in that category.  Islanders Outlook: The Islanders won last time out, notching their second straight victory via a 5-2 decision over the Belleville Senators on Friday night. Maxence Guenette and Erik Brown traded first-period goals, sending the clubs to the middle stanza deadlocked 1-1. Iskhakov broke the tie just 86 seconds into the second period, giving the Isles the lead for good. Arnaud Durandeau popped home the game-winner at 9:11, making it 3-1. Durandeau scored his second of the night into an empty net in the third period, while Andy Andreoff also found the twine in the final frame. Chris Terry leads the Islanders in scoring with 62 points (19 g, 43 a) on the season. Andreoff, meanwhile, is tops on the club in goals with 31. He is second in the league in goals, behind only Calgary's Matthew Phillips. Game Information:  WATCH: AHLTV LISTEN: Mixlr Play-by-play voice of the Wolf Pack, Alex Thomas, will have 'Wolf Pack Pregame' starting live at 6:45 p.m. on both AHLTV and Mixlr. The Pack is back at the XL Center on Friday night when they host the Providence Bruins. Join us for $2 beers and $1 hot dogs until the end of the first intermission! In addition, the Wolf Pack teamed up with the Miracle League of Connecticut for a sensory-friendly game this night. The puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.; tickets are available at hartfordwolfpack.com. Author’s Note: Hi, everyone! I’m back with another fic! I’ve been really inspired to write recently because it’s been helping me cope with the stress I’ve been feeling from everything surrounding quarantine and all that. I may yet post a few more fics but we’ll see how I feel over the next little while. GIF credit to mitchmarner!
Warnings: Nothing, I don’t think. Let me know if you see something though and I’ll add a warning for it!
Word Count: 4.2k+
Title: Amazed by Lonestar
Additional: Masculine reader this time! The reader is also mentioned to be the starting goaltender for the Leafs, so do with that what you will. I know masculine reader fics aren’t generally as popular in the hockey fandom but I wanted to write this for the few of you masculine peeps that are out there (myself sorta included) as a way to show that there are fics for you to enjoy as well. Your love and support would mean the world to me because I like knowing that I’m doing a good job. That being said, I hope you guys enjoy this!
When you walked into the arena for practice that morning, there was a vase with roses and a stuffed Carlton at your locker. You felt your entire face turn scarlet to match the roses. There was a card attached to the vase. It simply read: “Red roses to match the red hair -J.” You blushed harder and felt the tips of your ears heat up. You always got complimented on your red hair but this was another level.
“Roses? You got a hot date you want to impress?” You flinched in surprise because you hadn’t heard anyone else enter.
“Someone sent them to me,” you said in the same breath it took to turn to face whoever was behind you. You blinked when you noticed that it was Michael Hutchinson, the “new” goalie the team had acquired. “They sent a stuffed Carlton too.” You reached down and picked up the aforementioned bear to show Michael.
Michael smiled as he walked across the room. “Do a lot of girls send you roses and teddy bears? You don’t seem that phased.”
“That happens when you play for the Maple Leafs,” you chuckled. “Personally, I li--”
“(Y/N) got roses and I didn’t?!” You and Michael turned to see Mitch, Auston, Willy, and Zach walk in. Mitch had an indignant look on his face.
“Star goaltenders get the best things, Mitchy,” you responded. Michael chuckled at the feigned look of hurt Mitch shot back at you. “Maybe if you become a goalie and the backbone of this franchise, people will send you roses.”
Willy laughed hard enough that he nearly dropped his Starbucks. Zach grabbed it from him to prevent that. Auston sighed, shook his head, and waved a dismissive hand at what had unfolded in front of him before he went to his locker to get changed for practice. Mitch pouted as he walked past you. He stared you down with fake sad eyes the entire time. You sighed and grabbed a rose from the vase. You walked over to Mitch and gracefully handed it to him. Mitch lit up significantly.
“Thank you, King (Y/L/N), of The Toronto Maple Leafs,” Mitch giggled.
You ruffled Mitch’s hair before you walked back over to your locker. Michael looked at you thoughtfully before he went to his locker to change into his goalie equipment. Soon after, the rest of the guys filtered in and started to dress for practice. Keefe came in shortly thereafter and gave a brief speech about readiness and accountability before everyone was ushered onto the ice to begin the practice drills.
You had sustained an injury the previous week and were still to be dressed in a light contact jersey. The medical staff had been cleared to wear it when you first arrived at the arena that morning. The next thing you did was find the roses and the stuffed Carlton. Today had been a good day for (Y/N) (Y/L/N).
You and Jack were in the goalie corner while Michael took shots from the skaters. Jack leaned over and nudged you. You turned your attention away from the drills and looked at Jack.
“Am I still the only one that knows?” Jack asked, voice quiet.
“You’re gonna need to elaborate on that, Soupy,” you replied, voice full of confusion.
“That it’s easier than people think to score on your five-hole.”
You choked on his saliva. “Jack. Holy fuck.”
“Curse me all you want. Nobody heard me.” Jack vaguely gestured with his blocker in front of the two of you to prove that nobody had turned to look in your direction.
He waited for a beat. “Well?”
You sighed and put your head in your glove. “Yes,” you mumbled; you only wanted Jack to hear you.
When you looked back, Jack had gone to the net to face his shots. Michael stood there instead, looking rather confused.
“Fucking hell,” you mumbled, dropping your head into your glove again.
Micheal looked at you lopsidedly, bringing his glove up and placing it on your shoulder.
“What did Soupy say to you that had you so damn flustered?” Micheal asked, keeping his voice hushed.
You bit your lip, squeezing your eyes shut in the process. “‘It’s easier than people think to score on your five-hole.’”
Michael blinked and looked at you owlishly as he dropped his glove from your shoulder. “You’re a goalie. You should talk to the goalie coach when you get the chance. He can help you fix that.”
Dumbfounded, you didn’t push the subject further. You didn’t understand how Michael didn’t realize what you actually meant. He was a grown man. He had certainly heard that joke before. On the same token, you were grateful that Michael didn’t understand. You didn’t want Michael to potentially have a negative reaction in front of the entire team if he didn’t like what the joke meant.
The conversation quickly shifted. You talked with Michael about what he wanted to do while the team was on this three-game homestand against Vancouver. Though, you both knew there wasn’t exactly much you could do. Given the whole provincial lockdown and the NHL’s own set of rules and restrictions on the matter.
“Why don’t you come to my house tonight for dinner,” you smiled. “It’ll be an official welcome to the city and team kind of thing.”
Micheal blinked before a faint smile pulled across his lips. “Yeah. I’d like that. As long as it won’t get us in trouble.”
You smiled before you went to take your turn at the goaltender drills. The shots you faced were less intense and further between one and the next. The guys wanted to be cautious; your injury had been a neck injury and neck injuries weren’t to be messed with. You made some saves and didn’t make others. You didn’t want to overwork yourself and put any unneeded stress on your neck muscles. You needed to be ready to play this week against Vancouver.
By the time practice was over, you felt great. You went straight to the medical staff for examination as you had done after all of the practices since your injury. The examination was brief and to the point. The team doctor said your neck had progressed well and that you were ready to go for the next game. However, the doctor wanted to play it safe and wait until at least the game after that before he would allow you to start. You wanted to be angry, but you knew the doctor had made the right decision. You had hurt your neck and it had to be healed completely before you attempted to play again; it was better to be safe than sorry.
You walked out of the trainer’s room and back to the locker room. Most of the guys were in the showers and the room felt empty. You trudged to your locker with your head down. You felt dejected after the news the team doctor had given you. You stopped three feet from your locker when you saw a box of chocolate and a bag of cinnamon hearts where your glove, your blocker, and your helmets should go. You lightened up a little at that.
You turned around and noticed that Spezza, Muzzin, and Simmonds were all still at their lockers.
“Did any of you see who put the chocolate and candy in my locker?”
Simmonds looked up from his left skate. He shook his head.
“No, sorry, man.” He looked back down at his skate and continued to fiddle with the lace.
“I was the last one in here before you,” Spezza said, “and it was already in there when I walked past.”
You looked at Muzzin pointedly. The look you received told you that the defenceman knew something. Muzzin shook his head and turned his thumb and forefinger at the corner of his mouth.
With a sigh, you turned around and stepped the remaining three feet towards your locker. You carefully examined the chocolate and candy. You blinked when you realized it was your favourite European chocolate. Even cinnamon hearts were your guilty pleasure this time of year. Whoever had sent this had paid attention when you talked about yourself. The team nutritionist and the conditioning coach would both hate you when you ate these but what were you if you weren't human?
You quickly showered and changed. You wanted to get home to eat the sweets while you planned what to make for dinner when Michael came over that night. You walked to your car while you tossed around ideas for meals in your head.
Chicken, pasta, and peas? Fish, rice, and broccoli? Steak, potatoes, and carrots? You knew you would have bread rolls regardless because you had baked some while you had been injured to keep yourself busy. (You had taken up baking as a hobby to keep sane during quarantine and you had enjoyed it so you had decided to stick with it).
When you unlocked your car, you decided on the chicken for dinner. You had a nice sauce recipe that you had learned from your mother that you could use. When you opened the door of your car, you froze. On the other side of the car, there was a bottle of wine. You sat on the driver’s seat, closed the door, and reached for the bottle. When it was in your hands, you nearly dropped it when you saw what kind of wine it was.
“I can’t even pronounce that, but I know it’s expensive,” you mumbled.
You took out your phone and snapped a picture of the bottle. You contemplated whether to send the picture to Michael. Should you give him a heads up that there would be wine at dinner? After a moment, you decided it would be a wise decision.

Someone left me another present. This time in my car. Guess we're having wine with dinner tonight.
It took a few minutes, but your phone pinged with a reply from Michael.
 (Y/L/N) 13:13
From: Hutchinson
Holy fucking shit. That’s a really expensive wine. Someone likes you, dude.
 (Y/L/N) 13:14
To: Hutchinson
When I got to my locker, someone had left me a box of my favourite chocolate and a bag of cinnamon hearts.
 (Y/L/N) 13:16
From: Hutchinson
This girl must work for the team if she has such easy access to everything.
You bit your lip. You didn’t think it was a girl. There weren’t many girls that worked for the team and none of the staff would’ve grabbed your keys from your bag so they could slip the wine into your car. You thought--knew--it was one of the other players. You took a deep breath before you changed your mind and started to type exactly that to Michael.
 (Y/L/N) 13:19
To: Hutchinson
There aren’t that many girls that work for the team. I also know the staff wouldn’t go through my bag for my keys to open my car. I think it’s one of the players that’s leaving me all of this stuff.
The three dots appeared and disappeared several times. It made you nervous. You hadn’t come out but you had told Michael that you suspected one of your very male teammates had left you all of the presents. You hoped that hadn’t overstepped some boundary that Michael had.
Finally, your phone pinged with a message from Michael after what felt like an eternity.
 (Y/L/N) 13:27
From: Hutchinson
Are you bothered by that?
 (Y/L/N) 13:28
To: Hutchinson
“It’s easier than people think to score on my five-hole.”
You decided to reiterate that to see if Michael got it this time with a different context.
 (Y/L/N) 13:30
From: Hutchinson
Oh. You’re gay? I’m sorry for completely fucking that up before... :(
Does anyone else know?
 (Y/L/N) 13:32
To: Hutchinson
Just Soupy. He found me making out with a guy in a bar bathroom in Ottawa on Valentine's Day last year.
If that guy was Soupy… well. That’s for you and Soupy to know and everyone else to know when you two decided that the time was right.
The dots appeared and disappeared a few times before another message from Michael came through. You almost dropped your phone when you read it.
 (Y/L/N) 13:36
From: Hutchinson
Soupy told me he was pansexual already. Said I should know because of goalie solidarity or some shit like that. In which case: I feel I should tell you I’m bisexual. ⚥ ♡
(Y/L/N) 13:38
To: Hutchinson
Thank you for telling me. It’s good to know that the starting goaltender has both of his backups in his crease.
(Y/L/N) 13:39
From: Hutchinson
Maybe Soupy was onto something when he said we should have goalie solidarity.
If you ask me, the three of us being attracted to men sounds pretty solidarity worthy.
(Y/L/N) 13:40
To: Hutchinson
You make a valid point there, Hutch. An extremely valid point.
Though, I feel like I should tell you Soupy didn’t find out I was gay because he walked in on me making out with some guy in an Ottawa bar bathroom.
(Y/L/N) 13:42
From: Hutchinson
How did he find out then?
 (Y/L/N) 13:43
To: Hutchinson
He was actually who I was making out with. We got a little drunk (him more so than me) and he backed me against the bathroom door. We talked about it the next morning and officially came out to each other.
Oh. Oh. That’s when it dawned on you. The card with the roses. Muzzin’s silence. How the wine got in your car. You knew exactly who had left you all of these presents. You had to go talk to him right now.
 (Y/L/N) 13:45
To: Hutchinson
I figured out who left all the presents for me. I have to go talk to him. Be over for dinner by 19:00.
 (Y/L/N) 13:45
From: Hutchinson
That’s awesome! Go get your man! ;D
You put the wine safely in the centre console of your car and buckled your seatbelt. You pulled out of the player’s garage and into downtown Toronto traffic. You cursed under your breath as you dealt with the gridlock to your destination.
You decided that you would stop at a confectionery to purchase some white chocolate fudge and black licorice before heading to visit the man that had left you all of the presents. Those two sweets were his favourite sweets. If he could give you presents, you felt it was only fair to give him presents.
When you were finished picking out the sweets, you made your way to the checkout counter. There were some Valentine’s cards sitting on a display beside the register; you picked the cheesiest one you saw. You quickly filled it out with a personal message before wiping the pen down with the provided sanitary wipes.
“She must be special if you got her fudge and licorice,” the clerk chuckled.
“She is,” you smiled, though you weren’t sure if the clerk could decipher that behind your mask, “trust me. I’m headed to the flower shop next door to get a bouquet of tulips and lilies for her too. Those are her favourite.”
The clerk gave you a fond look with his eyes when he handed you the paper bag with the purchases. You smiled again, again not sure if the clerk could decipher if you were or not (though you weren’t all that pressed to know if he could or couldn’t tell), as you walked out of the confectionery and to the flower shop next door. The store was, unsurprisingly, rather empty even though Valentine’s Day was right around the corner. You supposed that’s what a provincial lockdown did for business, even in what was supposed to be a busy season for flower shops.
A florist noticed you by the tulips and walked over to you. “Can I help you with something, sir?”
You pointed at the tulips and then gestured towards the lilies behind you.
“Would it be possible to make a bouquet of tulips and lilies? I have someone I have to impress and they like those two the most.”
The florist smiled, her mask crinkling at the corners. She walked over to the table at the back of the store and grabbed the pruners and some bouquet paper.
“How many of each did you want?”
“Three tulips and six lilies," you smiled, pleased with yourself for the subtle symbolism you made there. "Oh! One red rose too. They gave me roses today and I want to show that I appreciated them.” You felt the tips of your ears burn. It had been a long time since you had bought someone flowers and you hoped that this would go over well.
The florist smiled again, her mask falling down her face a little as she collected the flowers. She readjusted her mask before she directed you to the counter to pay.
“Sir?” You had been halfway to the door but you turned back to look a the florist. She had a soft expression in her eyes and her fingers were drumming against the countertop in front of her. “He’ll love them.”
“How did you--” You cut yourself off, not even sure you wanted to know the answer.
“I’ve done this for a long time,” the florist chuckled. “You can tell who people want to buy for if you pay attention. Even if they don’t directly tell you.” She smiled faintly. “Go make it official with your man.”
You felt your face heat up as you hurried out of the store to your car. You carefully placed the bouquet and the bag with the sweets on the passenger’s seat before you buckled your seatbelt, tossing your mask in the glove box. You collected yourself as you drove the short distance to the building you needed.
You exhaled heavily as you collected the bag and bouquet before you got out of the car. The doorman didn’t bat an eyelash when he saw you walk past with flowers. The doorman never interfered with you when you came here.
In the elevator, you felt a knot form in your stomach. You had rarely been nervous in your life; you weren't sure why this made you nervous. (Y/N) (Y/L/N) was as confident in love as you were in the net. You never feared love and commitment. A committed boyfriend that understood the demands of hockey was the one thing you wanted besides hockey itself. The guy that sent you all the presents was a hockey player. He would understand the demands of a hockey career completely.
The elevator opened on the floor you needed. You swallowed thickly and began the walk to the right door. It was towards the end of the hall which gave you plenty of time to back out of this. Before you even thought to change your mind, you were at the right door. You gathered yourself before you knocked sharply. You heard feet shuffle across the hardwood floor in the foyer before the door opened.
“Jesus. I almost thought you’d never figure it out,” Jack chuckled as he stepped aside to let you in.
You toed off your shoes and put them on the mat by the door. You handed the bag and the bouquet to Jack who smiled fondly.
“These for me?” Jack asked, sniffing the flowers.
You nodded as you stripped off your coat and hung it on the coat rack.
Jack smiled and directed you to follow him to the living room. You followed him, wringing your hands together nervously as you went.
“Lilies and tulips… (Y/N)... I got you red roses because your hair is red. You got me my favourite flowers."  Jack's voice sounded strained. “And a single red rose? You're a true romantic under all of that gruff goaltending exterior, I see.”
You felt your entire body increase in temperature at that compliment. You even blushed like a schoolgirl with a crush. (Which wasn’t far from the truth, but that was neither here nor there.) Jack seemed to notice the uneven tone of your skin because he chuckled and playfully punched your shoulder.
“You should blush more. It looks good on you.”
You gasped and covered it up with a cough. If Jack noticed, he didn’t say anything.
Jack handed the bouquet back to you when you arrived in the living room. He quickly disappeared into the kitchen and just as quickly returned with a vase full of water. He placed the vase on the coffee table, took the flowers from you, discarded the bouquet paper in the bin beside the couch, and placed the flowers in the vase.
Jack sat on the couch beside you and reached for the bag next. He grabbed the card out first. He looked at the outside of the card and chuckled dismissively.
“’I love you, Barrie much!’ Really?”
“Tyson was a really good friend of yours. I wanted to keep him with us somehow since I know you miss him." You ducked your head and mumbled the last part.
When you looked back at Jack he was frozen. After a moment, Jack blinked and opened the card. He scanned the message and then looked at you. He placed the card on the coffee table beside the vase.
“That’s thoughtful, thank you.”
There was a moment of awkward silence before Jack reached into the bag and pulled out the licorice and the fudge at the same time. You could see the tears before Jack even looked at you.
“(Y/N)... you...” Jack finally looked at you. That confirmed that he had tear streaks down his cheeks. “You went to my favourite confectionery.”
You blinked once. Twice. Three times. “I did? I went there because it was the one closest to your apartment.”
Jack nodded furiously. He placed the fudge and licorice on the coffee table. “I used to go there all the time as a kid when my parents would bring me to see the Tigers play away games at Rogers Centre. That’s why I’m glad I’m back here. I can go there whenever I want to.” Jack still had a few stray tears but they had stopped for the most part. “This specific brand of white chocolate fudge is my favourite too. Thank you so much, (Y/N).”
A smile crept across your face.
“You should thank Michael. He’s the whole reason I’m here.”
“Hutchison?” Jack tilted his head. “What did he do that brought you here?”
“I came out to him, for starters.”
Jack grinned and reached his hand out to squeeze your shoulder. The way that touch made your body feel was electric. You shivered. Jack smiled and squeezed you again before he took his hand away. You shivered again.
“He asked if anyone else knew,” you continued. “You know the answer to that.”
Jack nodded. “Just me,” he paused. “Kinda hard not to know when we played tonsil hockey with each other.”
“I told him that too.” You ducked his head.
A hand came out and tilted your head up. Jack didn’t look mad at all.
“It’s okay, (Y/N). When I came out to him, I explained that I wanted to leave these presents for you. He’s the only one I could trust not to say anything since he was so new to the team. It worked even better that he’s a goalie and part of the community himself.”
 “Why did Muzzin know then?”
“The cinnamon hearts fell out of my bag when I walked into the arena this morning. He was the only other one there and picked them up for me. He agreed to help me if I told him which of you guys it was.”
You smiled. “When I told Michael that it was you I made out with, it made me realize: J meant Jack, Muzzin didn’t say anything because you’re my best friend and he's your best friend, and the wine got in my car so easily because you have the spare key.”
A smile crept across Jack's face and he chuckled. Jack still had your chin in his hand. You thought you had the perfect solution for that. You leaned forward until you were a couple of inches away from Jack. Jack's breath was warm on your face and it sent chills through your body.
“Would you like to do this properly now?” You swallowed nervously.
The only response you got from Jack was his lips on your own. Your lips moved fluidly together and your hands started to roam across each other’s bodies.
When you broke apart for air, you both panted heavily. You marvelled at how swollen, shiny, and red Jack's lips looked.
That’s from me. You thought. All from me.
“I have to go have dinner with Michael tonight,” you paused,” but would you like to order dinner on Wednesday? As a date?”
“Of course,” Jack smiled. “Anything for my star goaltender boyfriend.”
 Boyfriend.
You could get used to hearing that.

WHAT ARE YOU READING? i have multiple books on the go -- howl’s moving castle by diana wynne jones; stardust by neil gaiman; wideacre by philippa gregory; tevinter nights (dragon age book...the opposite of self care tbh)
WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR SELF-CARE? playing d&d and fallout 76 with my friends and working on platinuming both fo76 and fo4 to keep me busy. aside from that, walking the dogs is keeping me sane.
