ok so what if DID get my (fake) last name from katherine brooke? how cool would that be??

i've always assumed i picked up "brooke" from john brooke in little women because i remember thinking how lovely it looked on paper. BUT i think i picked this pseudonym around the time i read anne of windy poplars for the first time, and i remember feeling really drawn to katherine. (as much as i wish i was an anne, i'm very much a katherine.) and of all the aogg side characters, her development is one of my favorites—the fact that even katherine could be a bosom friend!

so i got my first name from marilla cuthbert/rilla blythe and my last name from katherine brooke, and in doing so, i've traversed the entire series. how full circle would that be!

I've spent my whole day listening to concerts - for far, two paul simon concerts and I'm currently listening to the simon & garfunkel live at lincoln center 1967 - and i can't help but sit in shock at how good these two are at performing.

being a recording artist and being a peformer are two separate careers imo, and that's why so many musical careers fail. but simon & garfunkel? they nailed both. their recordings are really good obviously, but what cemented them as my favorite artists was their concert in central park 1981 in which they sound just as good or better than the recordings.

it helps that they (specifically paul) can afford the best musicians, back up singers, etc. but it's also evident that they surround themselves with good artists. ladysmith black mambazo was a performance group first and a recording group second. paul found the jessy dixon singers through a performance.

but even then, they hold their own. the concert I'm listening to rn (lincoln center 1967) is just them and an acoustic guitar. and it's better than some recordings.

i stupidly didn't see the sign-up link for a midterm i'm supposed to take this week, so now i'm stuck taking a midterm tomorrow at 10am that i didn't really study for until today (yay!!)

on the bright, i had a different midterm last night that went really, really well (i think)—which is great cuz the first midterm in that class went really, really poorly. lord willing, they'll reasonably average out.

on the other hand, i have another more important midterm on friday that i haven't started studying for because i've spent all my time and energy on midterm #1 (cuz that was the most important).

so yeah. life's great and there aren't enough hours in the day.

reading a scholarly text for a class and it's saying things about christianity and the bible which are blatantly not true :)

in honor of the last day of dracula daily, here is my chalkboard from the past month. van helsing first speaks these words as he crosses the threshold into dracula's english manor, but the sentiment is repeated multiple times after that.

ouch ;-; what pains me most about sydney is how aware he is, including about himself, even though he seems aloof and mindless most of the time. he knows he's endlessly spiraling with no hope of recovery. he knows he is capable of a lot—he has "good abilities and good emotions". he knows that he can't dig himself out the hole—he is "incapable of his own help". he also knows that no one is willing to do the dirty work and dig him back out.

lucie extends a ladder, for lack of better words, but it isn't long enough to reach. i think that's what's so heartbreaking for sydney, even now upon their first meeting. he sees lucie as an unattainable way out—so close yet so far. in another life, the one he imagines through mr. doppelganger darnay, he could reach the ladder.
