Greja Franchis (French Church) is a colloquial term for what is now the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd. According to the website of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore, the first French missionaries in Singapore, the Société des Missions étrangères de Paris (MEP), built a chapel on the site of what is now the Singapore Art Museum in 1833. When the chapel could no longer accommodate the growing congregation, a bigger church was built at the junction of Bras Basah Road and Victoria Street between 1843 and 1847. It was dedicated to the Good Shepherd. The Portuguese Church, on the other hand, is now more commonly known as St. Joseph's Church. The Portuguese Mission had been serving Catholics in Singapore since 1825. They opened a church along Victoria Street in 1853. This was the church that Rizal visited. It was demolished in 1906, and the new church (the current one) was completed in 1912. Sadly, just like Rizal, both churches were closed when I visited them. Catholic Archbishop William Goh to become Singapore's first cardinal

VATICAN CITY: Archbishop William Goh, the leader of Singapore's Catholic Church, is among 21 new cardinals to be appointed in August.

Pope Francis announced on Sunday (May 29) that he would appoint the new cardinals, including an Italian leading the Church in Mongolia, again putting his stamp on the future of Catholicism.

Cardinals are second to the Pope in the Church's hierarchy.

Of the 21, 16 are cardinal electors under 80 years old and thus eligible to enter a conclave to elect his successor after his death or resignation.

Archbishop Goh, 64, who is the fourth leader of the Catholic Church in Singapore, is one of the 16 who meets the cut-off age.

Responding to queries from CNA, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore said it was "honoured" to have Archbishop Goh "elevated to the Cardinalate".

The archdiocese added that the archbishop is "deeply humbled" by the new appointment.

"However, Archbishop (Goh) is conscious that this honour and new responsibility conferred on him is also a recognition of the contribution of the faithful in the archdiocese for helping him to build a vibrant, evangelising and missionary church," it said.

Archbishop Goh was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Singapore in 1985. He was then appointed as the archbishop in May 2013, taking over from former archbishop Nicholas Chia, who held the top post from 2001 to 2013.

After the Aug 27 ceremony to officially install the 21 new cardinals, known as a consistory, Pope Francis will have appointed about 83 of the some 133 cardinal electors, increasing the possibility his successor will be a man reflecting his position on key issues.

The new electors include Archbishop Giorgio Marengo, an Italian who is currently the Catholic Church's administrator in Mongolia. The country borders China, where the Vatican is trying to improve the situation for Catholics.

Other cardinal electors come from France, Nigeria, Brazil, India, the United States, East Timor, Italy, Ghana and Paraguay.

Social media is becoming increasingly important to politicians. Whether it’s politicians, political parties or political institutions doing the talking, online communication is an important part of today’s election campaigning. Yet according to Jericho (2013, pp. 254-255), not many Australian politicians use Facebook; Twitter is used even less. Australian politicians also don’t make use of micro-blogging. This shows that social media does not (yet) seem like a necessary part of Australian political practice. However, Facebook, Twitter and other social media are no longer a new digital phenomenon and the number of social media users increases daily (Lister 2018). The digitization of politics creates new possibilities for communication between politicians and citizens but also increases vulnerabilities for the democratic system. According to Young (2010, pp. 112-116), social media and politics touches the core business model of Facebook and other social network sites: online advertising. Facebook and Google accidently turned harmless online advertising into hardcore political propaganda used by populists (Bisley 2017). In short, social media turned the art of seduction into a science of algorithm manipulation.

Not that advertising itself had ever been innocent – the potential was always there. But the big social network platforms with new instruments have reached an unprecedented power of influence. They show you everything you need to know, and you don’t have to know what they don’t show you. That's how the algorithms work. The symbiosis of algorithms and social media promotes a disruptive selection of information. Furthermore, algorithms in social media have become especially problematic in politics. For example, Facebook conjures up a news stream by creating a kind of personality profile based on your likes, friends, personal details, chat history, etc., and flushes posts into your timeline according to a complicated formula of weighting (Bell 2018). Since we like this on the basis of our own given signals anyway, we click on "Like" and reinforce these signals, and our contacts may become aware of the contents.

At the same time, content outside of our interest becomes invisible to us. Since humans like to surround themselves with other people who share the same interests, other information will not show up over time. In simple terms, social media removed the active search. While we used to have to actively search for information – e.g., turning on the TV, buying a newspaper or conducting a quick search on Google – today we're literally fed news on Facebook and other social network sites based on algorithms. However, there’s a glimpse of hope in Australia.

Australia's national broadcaster, ABC, with its Q&A political talk show encourages viewers to get actively involved – not just the studio audience but also the millions of viewers at home – by using social media and instantly asking questions to politicians on current affairs. In sum, media fulfil basic functions for political systems. It’s expected that politicians inform, contribute by critique and discuss their opinions – and thus enable participation. Media makes that possible.
