Someone, Please, Listen to Matthew
Arthur, flipping out after the Romerica reveal, so angry that spittle is actually flying out of his mouth: I fucking knew it! You bloody cunts have been lying to us this whole time! Even two days ago, when we made you own up to what you did with the Vespa, you still fucking lied to us! Alfred, you lied straight to Antonio’s face yesterday when he went out of his way to have a pleasant fucking chat with you even though you’ve been nothing but a selfish little prick to him!
Savino: [sobbing brokenly]
Alfred, also weeping, thinking his dad throttling him would be less painful than this: Dad, I, I…
Matthew, who Arthur is not paying any attention to, grumbling quietly: You shouldn’t call people bloody cunts at the breakfast table on New Year’s Day.

Almost everyone in the Vargas family: [has figured out Alfred and Savino are in some kind of secret relationship they aren’t telling Antonio or Alfred’s dads about, don’t care because it doesn’t affect them and they want to have a pleasant Christmas holiday]
Chiara’s parents: [still assume there’s something going on between Alfred and Chiara even after Arthur accused Alfred and Savino of being in a secret relationship during Christmas Eve dinner and even though they act way too cuddly and affectionate to be “best friends”

Alfred: [stops by Savino’s chair to kiss him before he gets a second cappuccino]
Arthur, baffled by this behavior: How many times a day do you kiss Savino?
Alfred, shrugging and baffled that Arthur is baffled: Depends on who we’re around and if we’re busy. If we’re not hiding our relationship from anybody and not super busy doing stuff that keeps us from kissing, then at least a few dozen times. Probably closer to a hundred than not.
Savino, smug AF: Definitely surpassing one hundred some days.
Matthew, amused: You’d think their lips would fall off at some point, but so far, they haven’t.
Alfred, shuddering in horror: Don’t even joke about that. Life wouldn’t be worth living if I didn’t get to kiss Vinny all the time!
Literally everyone in the room besides Marcello: [laughing at Alfred]

Savino: [Sees Amelia, this busty blonde girl who fits his physical preferences and seems both personality and appearance-wise the female equivalent of his boyfriend. He really has a thing for Alfred’s occasional slip into a Southern accent plus anytime he wears anything that makes him look like a cowboy, and this girl is speaking in a strong Texan accent and wearing cowboy boots.]
Savino, internally: Damn, Chiara’s girlfriend is hot. But I’m afraid she’s about to murder my boyfriend because she’s getting the wrong idea about him and Chiara, so I better try to help.

FrUK Can’t Stop Flirting
Alfred: [Asks his papa to borrow a gay pride shirt to wear the next day after he gets homophobic bullshit for wearing a flower lapel pin. He has one he was wearing throughout June, but it’s too big on him, like all the clothes he wore before he went back to school shopping with Savino.]
Arthur, as Francis is looking through his t-shirts: It’s too bad we’re such different sizes. The Elton John costume I wore for Halloween a few years ago would make quite the statement tomorrow. Or maybe those rainbow glitter jeans I bought to make my parents mad when I was seventeen. I can still fit into them.
Francis, smirking: And you look good doing it, mon lapin.
Arthur: [blushes bright red]
Alfred, internally: Papa, can you please stop hitting on Dad right now? It’s kind of grossing me out, and I just want to pick out a gay pride shirt to wear tomorrow. But I do wish I could fit into Dad’s rainbow glitter jeans. That would’ve been awesome.

Some Sexuality Headcanons for this Story
Since Alfred trying to figure out his sexuality has become a bigger part of this story, there will be at least some brief mentions of the sexualities of some other characters in this story. So here are the headcanons I’m using.
Matthew: straight, and he hasn’t looked into it much, but I think if he did, he might realize he’s on the ace or aro spectrums too. He hasn’t been interested in that many girls other than Katya, but I don’t think it was quite as extreme as Alfred’s fixation on Savino and no one else.
Katya: bisexual, and she’s really happy about her boyfriend wearing his ally shirt to school even though he was doing it for his brother after he got bullied because it feels like a statement of support for her as well. Her boyfriend is straight, but she feels comfortable talking about her attraction to girls with him because he’s a secure, supportive straight guy.
Magnus: gay, and his type is dudes that are smaller/skinnier than him (so his boyfriend Lukas, and Savino just a little, although Alfred is completely oblivious about the Savino part, LOL)
Tolys: bi, and his boyfriend Feliks is pan. They’re fine with each other using the terms that make them most comfortable.
Emma: lesbian, and right now Savino and Katya are the only ones who know. Savino because he’s Emma’s ex-boyfriend and their breakup did have to do with the fact that she’s a lesbian, and Katya because she asked why Emma had been avoiding eating lunch with everyone even after getting back in touch with Savino. They become closer after Emma comes out to her because they’re both WLW, but in a friendship way since Katya just wants to be with Matthew and Emma is fine being friends too after she gets over her one-sided crush.
Kiku: I’m leaning towards making him ace/aro since I haven’t given him a boyfriend or girlfriend, but I’m not sure if he has officially labeled himself yet. This factors into the plot because Kiku senses that Alfred is like him in this respect and just doesn’t like people that way (which was true before Savino showed up in his life). He’s known Alfred since the third grade, and Alfred has never had a crush on anyone or even mentioned finding a celebrity attractive. When Savino asks him about Alfred soon after he starts sitting at their lunch table, Kiku basically says Alfred is ace/aro without using that exact terminology since he doesn’t want to label Alfred without his permission. It also factors into why he’s so awkward when he runs into Alfred and Savino in the library, because they were making out in a very heated way. Even if Kiku could be romantically interested in people, I don’t think he’d feel comfortable making out with them like that even behind closed doors, so he felt very uncomfortable seeing his friends like that in a semi-public setting.
Antonio, Augusto, Savino, and Feliciano: All bi, and Chiara is in the midst of figuring herself out, but I think she’ll end up calling herself bi too. For Savino and Feliciano, part of the reason they go with bi rather than other terms is that Antonio and their nonno call themselves bi, so they like the family connection. Savino also isn’t a fan of explaining his sexuality to people, so he doesn’t want to use some term and then get a “what’s that?” in response. With Savino specifically, he’s more frequently attracted to girls or woman-aligned people, so he can’t say gender isn’t a factor for him, and pansexual is not a good fit. I think Chiara will end up using bi for all the reasons Savino does (liking a girl is new for her, she doesn’t want to explain it to people, and she likes calling herself bi the way some people in her family do).
Arthur: gay as the day is long, and he was particularly loud about it back in high school when he was dealing with his homophobic parents (hence stuff like rainbow glitter jeans). He can still be loud about it as an adult, like with his Elton John Halloween costume he wore a few years before the story starts.
Francis: pansexual, though for most of his life he would have used the term bisexual since that’s been around longer. When he found the term pansexual, it really resonated for him, so he mostly switched over to using that. He doesn’t mind explaining it to people, though he does get tired of the jokes about being attracted to pans (but he thinks if people are being that shitty about it, they wouldn’t be much better if he said he was bi).
Alfred: At this point, he definitely knows he is capable of being attracted to Savino and gender-variant versions of his boyfriend. Pansexual might fit him, but he isn’t sure about using that as a label since his sexuality is so confusing to him already that he doesn’t want to get more questions about it and would be more sensitive to jokes about him being attracted to pans than Francis is. Before this story, he basically thought he was ace/aro but didn’t have the words for it. He’s definitely not completely ace or aro because of Savino, but he’s on both spectrums, and I think he might settle on calling himself gray-romantic and gray-sexual eventually. Demisexual is sort of close too, because he only realized he was attracted to Savino that way after knowing him for months but may have had unrecognized sexual attraction before that, but demiromantic doesn’t because he definitely fell in love with Savino at first sight even if he didn’t get that’s what was happening to him at the time. He avoids discussing his sexuality with specific terminology most of the time because it’s not anyone’s business and he’s insecure about the fact that it seems weird and complicated compared to everyone else’s. He might use the bi/pan label and then follow it up with the ace and aro spec labels because the ace and aro spec part is just as important to him as the gender thing if not more so. But he’d only do that with someone he’s close to who he feels he can trust and who will believe him when he says he’s bi but really only attracted to his boyfriend and imaginary gender-variant versions of him.

Chiara, Reading Alfred’s Email
[It’s afternoon on New Year’s Day in Rome. Chiara decides to check her email since she has some free time.]
Chiara, noticing an email she got last night from an address she doesn’t recognize entitled “This is Alfred, Please Don’t Delete”: Huh, I guess Savino gave Alfred my email address after they got home. I’ll open this and see what he had to say.
Chiara, opening the email: Holy fucking shit, this thing is long. Did Fredo accidentally paste an essay he wrote for school into his email? I’m going to start reading it to make sure that’s not what’s going on.
Chiara, reading the opening where Alfred says he hopes she’s having a good New Year’s Eve: Okay, so it’s not an essay for school. I wonder why it’s so fucking long though.
Chiara, frowning as she reads the part about Alfred’s life being a mixture of heaven and hell because being with Vinny is heaven but the complications of being in a relationship with his stepbrother are pure hell: Damn it, Fredo...
Chiara, reading that her grandfather accepts Alfred and Savino’s relationship to the point he took them to the Ponte Milvio bridge to do the love lock thing: Wow, I wasn’t expecting that. But that is like Nonno. I think all he wants for his grandchildren is for them to be happy, and you obviously make Savi really happy.
Chiara, reading the next two sentences: What the fuck?! Marcello blackmailed them for a Vespa the day after Christmas?! I hope to God they decided to tell Tonio and Alfred’s parents instead of going along with that.
Chiara, reading that they transferred money out of their savings accounts to pay for the Vespa together before they left Rome and that Alfred initially offered to pay for it himself: Oh, for fuck’s sake! You two are so fucking stupid! Gesù Cristo, I want to smack you both right now. Especially you, Fredo, for trying to fall on some kind of goddamned sword and pay entirely for something neither of you idiotas can afford, even together. At least Vino was able to talk you out of being that stupid.
Chiara, reading the short paragraph about them buying the Vespa the day after they got home, hiding it in a gardening shed, and their parents discovering it the very next day: Of course they found out. It’s a fucking Vespa. That’s kind of hard to hide, especially since Savi was driving a little brat around whenever he asked. What the fuck were you two morons expecting?
Chiara, reading about Alfred’s argument with his parents over the Vespa and them getting on his case about Savino’s Christmas present: Jesus fucking Christ, you left less than thirty dollars in your checking account to pay for a Christmas present?! I can’t blame the eyebrow bastard and the Frenchman with the stubble for getting pissed off at you about that. But you are right about them being hypocrites if they got over it when they thought the present was for your actual brother and then getting upset that you bought it for Savino but saying he’s your brother at the same time. That isn’t fair.
Chiara, reading that Alfred confessed he’s been in love with Savino the whole time: NOOOOOO!!!!
Chiara, reading that Alfred tried to save Savino by claiming Savino has no feelings for him whatsoever: That is the stupidest fucking crock of shit I’ve ever heard. No way your fathers will believe that story.
Chiara, reading that Alfred is afraid of being kicked out of the house to the point he has a duffle bag ready to go at any minute and that his parents have been “treating him like a leper” ever since he confessed his feelings: Wow. I wish I really had killed the eyebrow bastard on Christmas Eve. And the Frenchman with the stubble too.
Chiara, reading that Alfred had a “weird conversation with Antonio” where he didn’t seem that grossed out by Alfred’s feelings, expressed sympathy to him, and wanted to make sure Alfred didn’t have a problem with Antonio’s relationship with his dads: Huh, that sounds like it went better than it could have. Tonio is really fucking nice. Based on how you’re talking about your dads, they sound like total assholes. I really don’t get why he’s with people like them.
Chiara, reading about the lie Alfred told Antonio: Damn it, Fredo! You’ve really got to stop lying to people. That story doesn’t even make any sense. You and Savi don’t act awkward around each other like you would if your feelings were one-sided and Savi knew that.
Chiara, when she reads about Savino’s reaction to Alfred’s lie: I mean, he’s got a point. Taking advantage of someone who’s in love with you to get a Vespa out of them is a really, really shitty thing to do. I can only hope your dads aren’t dumb enough to believe that bullshit you told Tonio.
Chiara, when she reads that Alfred is bad at lying: No fucking shit. I figured you and Vino out at dinner that first night because you were practically proposing to each other when all I did was ask you and Matthew what you might want to do after high school.
Chiara, reading about the lengths Alfred has gone to to scrub his phone and computer clean of evidence about his relationship with Savino because his parents might confiscate his phone and computer at any time: That’s really fucking depressing. But if you’re worried about your parents taking away your phone and computer for excessive Internet use, you sure as fuck shouldn’t be sending gigantic emails to me. At least you’re doing it in an incognito browser window.
Chiara, raising her eyebrows as she reads about their New Year’s Eve plans: Wow, I can’t believe your parents are leaving you alone with each other overnight. They seem to hate that you’re together, but they’re handing you an opportunity to have sex on a silver fucking platter.
Chiara, reading that Alfred hopes the email wasn’t too long and overwhelming: It was. I feel like I need a very stiff drink after all that, but you clearly needed to get that off your chest.
Chiara, reading that Alfred wants her to enjoy the New Year in her lucky red underwear and his explanation that he found out about this days ago and isn’t being weird about her undies: [chuckles]
Chiara, reading the part where he teases her about enjoying Amelia’s red underwear: [blushes bright red]
Chiara, scrolling down to read the post-script: It’s sweet that you wanted to tell me about you being on the ace/aro spectrums, but I think I’ll look up more about the terms you were using before I respond to that part. It’s not fair to ask you a bunch of questions about that, especially since it sounds like you’re still figuring it out yourself. And maybe you should be more certain about yourself before you start telling other people.
[Now that she’s read the entire lengthy email, Chiara sits there and stares into space for a moment.]
Chiara: I have no idea how to respond to all this stuff Fredo said to me, but he probably needs me to, at least when it comes to all the weird shit with the Vespa and his parents. I’m going to get myself a cup of coffee or maybe two and then try to figure out what the fuck I’m going to say to him.

Before They Officially Announce The Relationship
Arthur, Francis, and Antonio: [Go on tons of family outings, like the zoo, an amusement park, and a camping trip that includes Arthur’s brother. Regularly going over to each others’ house for dinner and a movie.]
Alfred, oblivious as hell: Wow, it’s nice that I get to hang out with my crush so much this summer! I’m not sure how my dads got to be such good friends with Vinny’s uncle, but it’s really working out nicely for me!

Feli is Relatable, and Marcello Needs To Get Over Himself
Savino, after Alfred followed him to the espresso machine: [smirks] You don’t even have a mug with you.
Alfred: I know. Just wanted to stand close to you and watch you looking all adorable and focused while you’re making coffee.
Savino: I’m half-awake, making a caffè latte so I can be somewhat closer to fully awake.
Alfred: Doesn’t mean you’re not adorable. I wanna watch you make coffee every morning for the rest of my life.
Feliciano: [giggles] Aww, a marriage proposal before nine a.m.? That’s gotta be a new record, even for you, Fredo. [beams at Alfred even though he’s not fully awake yet]
Marcello: [stomps past everyone to get a mug, clearly pissed off even if he’s not saying anything because Antonio’s there]

Once Again, Alfred Ruins the Mood in Catholic Landmarks
[Everyone is in the Santa Maria Maggiore, and they’re looking at the Crypt of the Nativity, which is said to contain wood from Jesus’s crib.]
Nonno Vargas, obviously a deeply religious man: I always like to come here close to Natale to remember what this festive season is all about. Sometimes we can get caught up in the cares and concerns of everyday life, but it’s good to remember what truly matters: this and family. The first Christmas Mass was said here, you know.
Arthur, less religious but awed by both the church and the relic: There’s a lot of history in this place. [glancing around at the walls] It truly makes one think and reflect on how small we are in the grand scheme of things.
Alfred, an overexcited dumbass who has trouble expressing himself in a solemn way: Dude, I can’t believe I’m looking at Jesus’s frickin’ crib right now! That’s insane!
