“the African continent”, where “military leaders” are declaring martial law. Everywhere else Walter mentions, he uses the names of countries and capital cities and talks about them closing their borders and such, but then it’s just “the African continent”, without specificity about actual places, because who cares, right? It’s all military dictatorships and anarchy in the streets and other gross Africa stuff. Sure, doesn’t sound racist at all. How hard is it to just...write the line the same way as you wrote all the other ones for the nice white European ally countries, huh? “the African continent”, for fuck’s sake.
“‘It’s always darkest before the dawn’, my uncle used to say that all the time, he was a wedding planner.” I miss you, George.
Gerak was a jerk, but he went out like a champ, and there was a lot of gravitas in his characterisation in this two-parter to balance out his spiral into Origin and still allow his redemption to feel earned. Other episodes previously have made him feel fairly one-note, but they pulled the arc off with aplomb here, and that’s no small feat. The return of Orlin felt, frankly, not so wise; his character was mostly inconsequential to the two-parter and it felt like an excuse to bring someone in just to kill them off (insofar as Orlin as he once was is now gone), plus the child actor playing the role was not an inspired choice. Nevertheless, we had some good stuff with the Jaffa, we hooked the Sodan in so that we could test our anti-Ori weapon, and we managed to do an attack-on-Earth story without totally copping out on how Earth manages to survive something that has pretty well wiped out anyone else who has encountered it so far. I’d call it a mid-season well done.

Those service advisers really crack me up w/their naïveté (this one’s name turned out to be Anthony—just like the tech’s who worked on my car at Lynnwood!): I called the Bellevue Honda, which is probably the only dealership in the neighborhood where they still don’t want me dead (for now) & asked for a hybrid-battery test—and he goes, “Well, if your battery is failing, your check-engine light should be on”…. I was like, Oh honey, we’re way, way past the check-engine light at this point—I’ve been driving w/that check-engine light on for four & a half years; you need to plug in that special tester of yours into the actual battery & tell me, PASS or FAIL…. (Though I’m sure, if this puppy’s 15 yrs old, I’ve cheated the odds long enough—it’s gonna fucking FAIL…. Not that I believe that any battery actually “passes” that particular $70 test: they probably don’t even do it, they just sell you a new battery on the spot…) I guess you have to leave the car for several hours there for such a simple test because they have to get to the battery in the back of the car (it’s close to the trunk) *and* only a select few technicians are actually licensed to work w/that particular equipment…. (It’s also illegal for anyone other than Honda to install those hybrid batteries, which is why I don’t have a choice…) I hope y’all know what *this* means: we’re talking a cost at least twice as much as the radioiodine treatment (including the bloodwork, etc)…. So, you know: good luck to us…. We’re certainly gonna need it, since we clearly have no abilities…
