I don't understand the argument for "don't politicize their deaths" and not because of "if not now then when?" If it was a death that could have been prevented then they need to be political. Why could it have been prevented and what can we do to prevent it? We need to ask ourselves that and then work on correcting it before the next tragedy occurs. I mean, fuck, if I died in a shooting, mass or otherwise, I'm all for being the poster child of ban guns. and boy would I hope that everyone who would try to "not politicize my death" knows that I am all for it. If it sparked conversation and steps towards sensible gun legislation, that'd be great. If people sat around and did absolutely nothing to make sure others didn't die like me, then I'd be absolutely furious. That would be the worst possible outcome. And this shouldn't just apply to gun violence? Deaths are politicized all the time and often in the name for change and reform. For starters, Trayvon Martin, Freddie Gray, Sandra Bland, Tamir Rice, Sam Dubose, Eric Garner, and too many others have been names that pop up to address police brutality and anti-black racism. Leelah Alcorn committed suicide back in 2014. Though not a murder, her death sparked conversation about conversion therapy in Cincinnati and became the first city in the United States to ban it. Leelah specifically asked in her that her death would mean something. And those on the left are not the only ones who politicize deaths. What about Kate Steinle who was shot by an immigrant who was deported five times? Which presidential candidate mentioned her during their acceptance speech at a 2016 National Convention? Why is Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement now an office in ICE? What about Seth Rich, a 27 year old DNC staffer whose death was spun into a conspiracy theory propagated by Fox News? Reports from NPR say that this story gained even more urgency shortly after the firing of James Comey. But of all the politicized deaths, I think this one is the worst, because it appears it's goal was to tarnish an opposing political party rather than root out the culprit. In the end, deaths are politicized. Often for very good reasons and sometimes not for good reasons. Both sides of the aisle do it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s tragic, but don't pretend like it's something we shouldn't do especially if it can bring about meaningful change.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:
Acclaimed historian Leslie Berlins “deeply researched and dramatic narrative of Silicon Valley’s early years…is a meticulously told…compelling history” (The New York Times) of the men and women who chased innovation, and ended up changing the world.Troublemakers is the gripping tale of seven exceptional men and women, pioneers of Silicon Valley in the 1970s and early 1980s. Together, they worked across generations, industries, and companies to bring technology from Pentagon offices and university laboratories to the rest of us. In doing so, they changed the world. “In this vigorous account…a sturdy, skillfully constructed work” (Kirkus Reviews), historian Leslie Berlin introduces the people and stories behind the birth of the Internet and the microprocessor, as well as Apple, Atari, Genentech, Xerox PARC, ROLM, ASK, and the iconic venture capital firms Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. In the space of only seven years, five major industries—personal computing, video games, biotechnology, modern venture capital, and advanced semiconductor logic—were born. “There is much to learn from Berlin’s account, particularly that Silicon Valley has long provided the backdrop where technology, elite education, institutional capital, and entrepreneurship collide with incredible force” (The Christian Science Monitor). Featured among well-known Silicon Valley innovators are Mike Markkula, the underappreciated chairman of Apple who owned one-third of the company; Bob Taylor, who masterminded the personal computer; software entrepreneur Sandra Kurtzig, the first woman to take a technology company public; Bob Swanson, the cofounder of Genentech; Al Alcorn, the Atari engineer behind the first successful video game; Fawn Alvarez, who rose from the factory line to the executive suite; and Niels Reimers, the Stanford administrator who changed how university innovations reach the public. Together, these troublemakers rewrote the rules and invented the future.
