earthbound definition: attached or restricted to the earth.

In which Cole stands up to a tyrant that is cruel and unjust deep within the mountain. Because he made a promise.

It doesn’t take a genius to see that Cole’s losing.

The cave is in chaos; the sound of screams and clanging weapons fill the air as two sides clash against each other.

Vangelis and the Skull are toying with him, and he knows it: they’re circling him, trying to throw him off by telling lies about his mother. Cole blocks the hits from Vangelis and the blasts from the Skull, feeling like a fly they were winding up in a web of lies.

Vangelis rises above him, resembling a winged creature of death with his blank mask and the glowing Skull of Hazza D’ur in hand. “And now, her deceit has doomed you!”

“Her only son,” the Skull rasps.

Vangelis hurls the Skull at Cole; growing brighter and brighter the closer it gets. He stands his ground and braces himself.

The Skull collides, and the blades …

… shatter.

Cole is thrown back, the air knocked out of his lungs as his body rolls to a stop. He sits up weakly, before throwing back his mask to gasp at the sight of the broken Blades of Deliverance.

“No!” He cries. With trembling fingers, his gloved hands hold onto the shattered pieces of the black and white blades. “It can’t be …”

His mother … lied …

“It is,” Vangelis glides towards him menacingly. “And now, you will pay the price for your mother’s lies.”

“Lies, deceit,” the Skull rasps.

Cole screams in pain as the Skull unleashes fire upon his fallen form.

“Your cause is lost.”

More fire.

“Have the grace to admit defeat.”

More fire. More, more. Blistering pain wreaks havoc across his broken body.

It’s hopeless. He’s finished. He’s too weak. It’s over. He just wants to —

He remembers his mother.

“I want you to promise me, Cole. That you will always stand up to those who are cruel and unjust. Always.”

“Always.”

His mother … her strength hadn’t come from the Blades of Deliverance. She’s always been strong. She had been sick all his life, yet no matter how weak her body had gotten she had moved through her life with implacable momentum. Impossible to sway or dissuade. Ever since he was young, his mom had power — from her beliefs … and from the Earth.

“It was her,” he realizes. “It wasn't the blades. It was her. The power inside my mother.” The power inside of me, his heart whispers. Not the Spinjitzu Burst. The power of Earth.

“It was all her.”

“Alas,” Vangelis laughs cruelly. “You are not half the warrior your mother was.”

Pain and grief bite through his being, but Cole forces himself to his feet to glare at the Skull Sorcerer. “Maybe not, but I am her son.” Conviction buries itself deep into his being. “And I made her a promise to stand up to tyrants like you! Always!”

The mountain rumbles its agreement. Cole digs his fingers into the rock and feels it mold around the shape of them. Every grain of earth begins to glow as his power seeps into it.

“What are you doing? What is this!” The Skull Sorcerer demands.

“It's the Burst!” He barely hears Master Wu cry above his roaring element.

But no. It's not, and Cole can feel it. It's something different. Deeper.

His power was strongest when he was the closest to the earth and he’s never been farther underground. He was basically at the bottom of the world. Never has he been more surrounded by the very thing that powered him. The Skull Sorcerer thought he was burying him — but what if bringing him closer to his full strength? To the source of his elemental power?

Cole could feel it — the connection to the earth. He could feel it reaching out towards him, coming from the ground all around him.

He stands and lets it in. He let the energy of the earth infuse him, deep into his core and surging forward. The Skull of Hazza D’ur comes flying forward to finish him off and Cole bursts to life.

Unparalleled power explodes from the earth, bright and blinding, and Cole feels more alive than ever. His skin disappears, being replaced with magma and rock as the mountain quakes under his force.

The battle halts as everyone stops at the sheer force of the Earth; Ninja gape in shock, the Shintarians fly back in fear, the cave-dwellers stare with awe.

“Son of Lilly,” the Geckle and Munce whisper.

Cole rises with the power of the Earth; the Skull spiraling, lost, as he reaches for it with a molten hand and throws it down against the Earth. Destroying it.

The battle — one that had been reigning in secret for decades — is finally over.

Vania dips her head as the last servant that has finished attending her and shuts the door.

She takes a deep breath, listening to the fading footsteps of the servant and the guards clanking armor move away.

Then she springs into action.

She quickly changes, flying out of her normal, queenly wardrobe into more plain, neutral robes. She glances at Chompy, who’s watching her from his bed. She touches the dragon’s head.

“I’ll be back before morning — promise,” she whispers. He makes a chattering noise, telling her he’s displeased. “I know! I will, I promise. I just …” she bites her lip. “I just can’t leave him alone down there.”

Maybe Chompy can hear the pain in her voice, because he doesn’t argue — simply pushes his head into her hand with a small chur of forgiveness.

Vania pushes past the grief and stands, lighting a candle before leaving. She sneaks through her own palace silently, moving past guards like a ninja as she heads for the gardens.

She makes her way to the entrance of the garden alcove leading into the mountain, her heart steadily beating harder. The caves beneath the mountain were deserted, with the Geckle and Munce people deciding that they wanted to live their new lives above the mountain.

She scurries down; down and down the winding mountain, past cramped caverns and twisting turns, the cloying darkness only fought off by a single flame.

Finally she reaches it.

The Heart of the Mountain.

The legendary temple for the Masters of Earth. Ancient scriptures written in the Old Tongue read: Let pass through here, into this refuge and sanctuary, only those who are One with the Earth. Orange flames danced off the walls, even though no one had been down here to light them. Power shined through the giant doorway as Vania drew nearer.

Creak …

The door opened slightly.

Vania went inside, following the carved path molded by Geckle and Munce. Statues of ancient Earth Masters and their stories echoes around her, and she ignores the familiar goosebumps that rise along her skin. Her eyes linger on the statue of Lilly, before moving on.

Statues are more than solid pieces of art. They are immovable, unbreakable monuments that enrich storytelling, making the experience of living more profound and unforgettable. They remind us of the strength of traditions, the power of history, and the enduring spirit that echoes throughout the ages.

She draws closer to the one standing in the middle, heart beating loudly in her chest. It's tall and strong, newly carved. Awake and glowing with the surging elemental energy. She reads the plaque in front of it.

This statue was carved with love and gratitude by Geckle, Munce, and Shintarian craftsmen in honor of Cole Brookstone: Ninja, brother, and son.

Vania places the candle on the stone ledge and takes a seat on it, facing away from the statue. It feels like yesterday she was trapped in here with the Upply and Master Wu, trying to figure out a way to stop her father. She forces the memories away when she feels the mountain move.

“Hello, Cole,” she says softly. The Earth rumbles under her feet, before slowly forming and making a vague shape of the person she used to know. Orange light shines through the cracks of rock as he peers at her curiously, waiting.

Vania smiles.

“So, what story would you like to hear today?”

jay seabound au where he becomes lightning to stop wojira.

(With some fun lil twists?? Maybe idk it’s peak brainrot hours)

anyway after that, Nya starts going mad on a manhunt to find a way to bring him back. With her slowly becoming more unstable and the team missing a crucial member, they all dispersed over time like before. In the meantime Jay is living the highlife being able to zip around to his hearts content. Note: he looses his memories during this. Aka, he looses the memories of Nadakan and Unagami + whatever other fuckos traumatized him. Continuing, he bumps into this weird wind guy a few times while passing through storms in the sky’s of ninjago. (Totally morro btw) they don’t talk much but do race eachother every so often and vibe in the low rumble of the brewing storms. That is, Ofcourse until the anniversary of the whole sitch with wojira comes around and people release paper lanterns into the sky. Rather than recognizing his name and getting his memories back, he only vaugly recalls some importance to the name ‘jay’. So he goes down to the surface to look around, pogoing off of the occasional telephone wire. He ends up in the heart of ninjago city, where a giant parade of ppl are listening to someone give a speech (this person being Wu).also briefly recognizing this weird old man, Jay decides to follow him, ending back up at the temple. (Btw only Nya and Zane stay at the temple anymore. Lloyd is window washing, Kai is at his dojo, and I think Cole might take the time to reconnect with his dad and prob hang out with the walkers since he and jay were close) and a curious but very stupid jay runs into an exhausted Nya running off of 32 hours of caffeine. TLDR, he scares the shit out of her, which causing her to drop her hot coffee *onto sparky boi* also scares him and he bolts (literally). Fuck I made a paragraph ANYWAY Zane finds her in the hall and is mostly just concerned that she’s started hallucinating again (yes the bad bitch has been hallucinating and no she will not admit it) but Nya swears she did and convinced Zane to try and gather the others, tho the only one who agreed to come was Kai (and that’s mostly because his older brother senses were ringing at the news of her all nighters). Lloyd didn’t want to come because obviously and Cole was still struggling with Jay’s loss and helping the grieving walkers. But eventually, after another several hours of staying awake, Jay finally popped back by the monastery and peaked his lil head into the room, where a far too awake for her own good Nya immediately spotted him and scares him off again. It’s only reviewing the footage in the lair that she proves it to the others, who promise to help her only if she gets some fucking sleep, which she denies off the bat. She starts packing to go looking for jay on her own before Wu knocks her out with some sleeping incense. In the time they let Nya sleep, they try to gather the others again, both Lloyd and Cole finally agreeing because of the footage. Course, when they end up all meeting in the lair and Nya wakes up after a 20 hour coma, she’s irate and frustrated that they haven’t gone looking for Jay yet. (In this id think that the fight is between Cole and Nya instead) and while their arguing, the spook a nearby Jay who accidentally short circuits the whole electrical grid of the lair, Making a certain glowy electric boi very obvious and very prominent. Before Nya can scare him off again, Lloyd calms Jay down. (Btw when in this elemental state this poor bean’s anxiety skyrockets) they talk and make a plan to do the whole Aspheera thing, Pixal rerouting a large genorator for Jay to route his powers into while their gone so they don’t go out of control. Jay still can’t remember who the heck these people are but something in his brain is telling him to listen to them so he’s going with it. (Continuing in another post cause whoops I made this too long for tumblrs word cap)

After having a weird ass dream in which Nya's final form was really big and really glowy, it got me thinking about what I would've done to more utilise the idea of her merging with the sea after the events of Seabound and started brainstorming!! This AU is. more of an expansion upon the one-year timeskip between seasons 14 and 15 than a full-blown alternate universe but I have altered a few aspects from the series to better fit my vision (think how Way of the Departed was to Sons of Garmadon). The idea in itself is still pretty bare-bones but I did draw a few concept pieces today and wanted to share !!

The general concept revolves around each ninja's experience with mourning Nya's loss and what happened in the one year between Seabound and Crystalized, specifically delving deeper into what Crystalized set up with each ninja coping in a different way and how that affected their relationships . I am by no means a writer but i'm pretty happy with what i've got going so far ^_^

children of the storm

I have many thoughts. look under the cut to read them >:D (click for quality tumblr fucked it up bad)

my hands slipped and made a new au for wojira duo. whoops.

so the au starts around the time that seabound ends, with nya as this big-ass water dragon thing and kinda just wandering around the ocean saving random sailors out of habit. within her first week or so she starts hearing a soft hum in her head, and eventually, the voice starts to speak a bit. in this form, she is the most connected to her element than she ever has been or ever will be, so she’s finally able to connect to the other half of her element, wind, aka morro. she's hearing his thoughts, basically.

but morro’s dead, right? kinda. a little. let me explain. 

for some reason, the writers never bothered to establish the existence of a new master of wind after morro died (which totally shoulda happened btw), so that implies that morro never died to begin with. I decided to make the explanation as vague and random as possible because that's what I’m best at!! yeah.

in this au, it's revealed that morro never actually got sent to the departed realm in the s5 finale, and instead was manifested as a huge purple dragon similar to nya’s current form. this only happened because he never had anyone to pass his element to, so he was instead sent to guard the skies by the first master himself until morro could find someone who he deemed fit enough to wield the wind after him. 

of course, morro being the stubborn asshole he is (affectionate), chose that brooding in the mountains is a better fate than giving up his wind. he lives on the highest of all peaks in ninjago, where no one will try to find him. he decides that he may as well stay true to the task the first master put on him; he’s not sure he can handle the guilt of going against him after what he did to wu.

ok enough about the emo bitch. back to the cool one. nya has developed a mental link with morro now that they’ve both reached the highest point of connection with their elements. she eventually works up the courage to talk to him, and he reluctantly responds. in canon, nyad is the one to help nya remember her life, but in this version it's morro. she freaks out when she realizes who she's talking to, but morro isn't acting like a vengeful psychopath, so over a few months nya and morro begin to talk to each other more and more. eventually, they become friends :D

I have more planned, but this is all I'll put for now because it's already getting way too long lmao. send me an ask if you wanna hear more tho, I'll gladly share!

Energybound

binding energy definition: in physics and chemistry, binding energy is the smallest amount of energy required to remove a particle from a system of particles or to disassemble a system of particles into individual parts.

In which Lloyd becomes Energy to save the world. As the Green Savior, he was always prophesied to die for it. The scrolls never mentioned anything about his friends.

The sun is just peaking over the horizon of the ocean when Lloyd makes his choice.

A restless night had passed, with the city drowning and Kalmaar sweeping through flooding to find the Ninja. With Jay’s condition worsening and Nya not leaving his side. With Benthomaar wracked with guilt over what his adopted brother had done and Kai, Cole, Zane, and P.I.X.A.L anxious to do something. 

Lloyd had eavesdropped on Nya and Bentho talking about the Nyad, how she had merged with the sea and defeated Wojira. He knows what she is about to do. 

He’s just doing it first. 

Lloyd cracks open his eye from where he is pretending to be asleep, and slowly stands up. All of his friends are passed out from the emotional toll of the day— even Nya, who was fitfully sleeping besides Jay. 

He moves quietly to not alert any of his friends and wake them up. Silently, he makes his way to the door, before looking back at his friends one last time. Jay was laying on the couch, gasping and wheezing in raspy intervals. Nya is next to him, shifting uncomfortably. 

Bentho leans up against a filing cabinet next to the couch, arms crossed and head hanging. He was separated from the rest of his friends, and Lloyd wishes to see the day where Bentho is comfortable enough to lay next to them instead of dealing with everything himself. 

Kai, Cole, Zane, P.I.X.A.L, and Master Wu are all passed out on the other side of the room, unconscious to the world and the thoughts swirling around Lloyd’s head. 

Lloyd wishes they had more time. A few spare months of recuperating and relaxation isn’t enough between the life-threatening missions his team frequently goes on. He wants to stay with his friends.

He bites his tongue, the pain distracting him from his thoughts as he opens the door and then closes it, making his way to the roof.

Lloyd dangled his feet off the edge of the dock, eyes trained on the gleaming horizon. An unsettled feeling was shifting in his gut, and a single question rolled around in his mind. 

Footsteps sounded towards him, and Lloyd turned to see his mother and uncle walking towards him.

“Lloyd, are you okay?” Misako asked. 

Lloyd stood up, not taking his gaze away from the sinking sun. “I was just thinking… I know Ronin’s monster was a fake, but I guess I was wondering if Wojira is really still out there… somewhere.” 

“If she is, may she sleep for another thousand years.” Wu prayed.

And at the bottom of the sea, the storm slept.

Lloyd walks towards the edge of the building, peering down at the dark water. It is black and bottomless, and Lloyd feels a surge of doubt before he shoves it away.

Lloyd may not be the Master of Water, but he is the Master of Energy. And as far as he knew, energy was everywhere. Nyad may have become one with the Sea, but she lost herself to the ocean and disappeared for thousands of years. 

Lloyd couldn’t let that happen to Nya. 

Lloyd was the Green Ninja, the savior of Ninjago. He was always destined to sacrifice himself for it, but nobody mentioned anything about his friends. Everything he had gone through— the Overlord and his father, Morro’s possession and Harumi— it all led up to this moment. 

This is for his friends. Everything he had done was for his friends— every harsh blow from battle and hair ruffle in the morning. They had taken him in when he was a kid and gave him a home and a family. They had raised him, trained him, loved him even when he was being nothing but a bratty child who gave them problems.  

Lloyd turns and stares back at the door where his family was sleeping, unaware. 

Kai’s fiery courage, Nya’s fierce determination, Cole’s easy kindness, Jay’s bright intelligence, Zane’s gentle empathy, P.I.X.A.L’s snarking camaraderie, Benthomaar’s hesitant friendship, Wu’s aging wisdom, Misako’s sense of adventure. 

His family. 

Lloyd turns away, blinking back the sudden tears as green power lights his hands and he starts spinning.

“Bentho, how did Nyad defeat Wojira? In the story you told me?”

“… she became one with the sea.”

“But how exactly?”

“She opened herself up to the full power of the ocean. She merged with it.”

“…”

“Do not think of such things! Nyad may have defeated Wojira but she lost herself. What she did cannot be undone. She vanished.”

“…”

Lloyd opens his eyes, feeling light shining from the inside out as his green power spreads. Energy floods his body, feeling light and fleeting as Lloyd reaches down to the core of his power— and lets it loose. 

Lloyd thinks of Cole and his Spinjitzu Burst, deep in the depths of Shintaro’s mountains. Unparalleled power had exploded from the earth and wrapped his brother in his element. 

Lloyd can feel it happening too— but it's different. Green power is rushing around him, light blinding his vision, the particles on his skin transforming into pure energy. 

Then— 

BOOM!

A sonic sound wave explodes throughout the sky. The light tapers off.  Lloyd opens his new eyes and looks down at his body. Green energy swirls around in the shape of his old body.

He feels light, powerful, new— Lloyd is filled with boundless energy, free to travel wherever he likes and too fleeting to ever catch. 

Lloyd realizes he’s flying and spins around, laughing. The door to the rooftop suddenly slams open, and his family pours out— Kai and Wu in the lead as they stop and stare at their brother and nephew. 

“Lloyd!” Kai calls. Jay and Nya join them, the former leaning on his girlfriend heavily as he stares at his little brother disbelievingly. 

Lloyd frowns at how weak Jay looks. That can’t do— Jay will need to be at full strength when they beat Wojira. He flys down, ignoring the flinch of surprise from the others and presses a hand to Jay’s chest. 

Green energy lights up, and suddenly Jay is able to breathe easier— like his lungs weren’t even damaged at all. Nya stares at Lloyd, looking pained for some reason.

Lloyd pulls away as Wojira roars her challenge, his power picking up in anticipation. 

“Lloyd, wait!” Wu calls— but it's too late. With another BOOM! Lloyd takes off, flying at the speed of sound to confront Wojira once and for all. 

It is time to finish what his grandfather couldn’t.

Nobody notices the crystal spider on the wall, violet eyes recording everything. 

Clink… clink… clink… 

The spider scurries back to its master.

Sleep, sleep

Spider bit the mouse, 

Sleep deep

Don’t wake up or else 

You’ll find a spider in your m—”

The song breaks off, and the dark figure turns from the computer to see a crystal spider making its way towards her. 

She kneels down, dark cape fluttering and kabuki mask flipped up as the mechanical spider crawls into her hand. She strokes it gently. “Did you find everything I need?” She asks. 

The spider’s eye flashes, and then a holographic video is playing in the crystalized room. The bright screen contrasts the dark room, the purple and pink hues drowned out by the light images playing. 

The Herald purses her lips, fingers tightening on the spider she is gripping unconsciously as the video finishes. 

“I see,” Harumi says. She turns and stares at the giant crystal protruding in the middle of the Oni Temple. “This changes things.” 

“Time to make some alterations to the previous plan.”

This follows the pirate AU, and the notion that maybe perhaps something happened to Mei Li. Wanted to explore Taishen, the chillest dragonborn alive, having an outburst for just one moment. Of course, the only guy who can summon water on his skin addressed the flaming body.

something that i think about a lot is that nyad and nya both merged with the sea - not separate parts of the sea, the whole sea, together.

so, when the ninja froze nya in order to de-merge her in crystallised, how would they know that the being they were trying to resurrect was nya? how would they know if a few drops of saltwater belonging to nyad weren’t clinging to nya’s form, and weren’t brought back with nya? how would they know that the being they were seeing was nya, wholly and truly nya, with no influence of the woman who also inhabited the ocean?

no, there’s no way they could’ve known.

and so there’s a chance they could’ve brought back both spirits. nyad and nya controlled the same body (of water) at the same time; why would that change when they got brought back?

when the water of nya’s body returns to flesh, when the staff has absorbed her power, jay runs over to his yang. he looks into the eyes he’s only been able to see in his dreams for a year, and they’re unfamiliar. they’re a mix of nya’s normal grey and a blue too vivid to seem human - a mix of nya and nyad, the two spirits who sacrificed their lives and shared the body of the ocean, and who will continue to bear the sacrifice by sharing their human body instead.
