Would you mind explaining more about a 'check in pattern' please

Of course! Some people use a specific rhythm or pattern as a check in. This can be the good ol’ “shave a and a haircut” type call and response or another similar system.

In the past, I have used three quick taps as a “Red” safety pattern. So if my partner is going to fast and I’m not able to verbalize I’ll give three taps on the part of their body I can reach to say stop/slow down.

You can also use taps to affirm your “Green” light. For example, if I’m gagged and my partner is doing a check in, they can have me wrap my hand around two of their fingers which prompts me to respond in our check in pattern.

There are many other ways you can use a pattern. Some people use Morse code, rapid blinking, snapping their fingers. What matters is what works best for you and your partner.
