3. Foreign Language Film

Kaamelott First Installment (2021) by a long shot. There are several French-language Arthurian films on my list but they're just not that good unfortunately. Although, Morgane et Ses Nymphes (1971) is very sapphic horny if that's your thing.

5. Animated

Arthuriana is plagued by bad animation adaptations. Don't really love any of them, and if I can't count Monty Python and The Holy Grail (1975) on account of Terry Gilliam's contributions, then I guess it has to be The Sword in The Stone (1963). It's pretty!

Okay, so this doesn’t have much to do with the song other than the title, but—

Remus goes to this pop-up art gallery, and one of the photography subjects there is Sirius. He has a series of self-portraits with overlaid images and warped videos, and Remus becomes obsessed, spends hours looking at him. He finds them really raw and vulnerable, and he feels like there’s something so lifelike about Sirius.

But he doesn’t write down Sirius’s name. So Remus goes to the gallery the next day, and the exhibit’s gone. He asks the person working the front desk about it, but the person doesn’t know what Remus is talking about. No such exhibit has ever existed to their knowledge.

Remus feels like he’s going crazy. He tries every internet search imaginable and is about to give up and chalk it up to a dream when he finds one of the self-portraits from the gallery. And there’s Sirius, staring back at him.

Only Sirius is from the 90s. And he was murdered. But Remus remembers that the exhibit he went to very explicitly mentioned that Sirius was a contemporary artist—nothing about his death.

These weird things continue to happen to Remus that don’t quite add up, and he realizes he’s traveling through time when he runs into Sirius at a pub one day. Despite his better judgment, he stays and talks to Sirius and falls in love all over again. So he makes it his mission to figure out how to save Sirius.

orchid ⇢ what’s a song you consider to be perfect? OH. I have no idea! Different music for different occasions makes this impossible! Dvorak's New World Symphony is impossible to beat as a singular piece of music in my books. I also VERY much like his Slavonic Dances, as well, tho; and I can't not mention Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony. But I listen to a lot of very different stuff. Yesterday I listened to the Doc Martin intro theme on a loop for about two and half hours because it kept me cool, calm & collected under stress. Actually, to answer the question properly, I don't consider any song perfect! But I love so many...

mahonia ⇢ what place, thing, activity inspires you most and how do you express yourself when it does? Oh, reading, for sure. I read and it inspires me both to write and to write better and to read more. The only thing I love more than reading is writing, which is an inspiration unto itself, as any writer will know.

sage ⇢ what ‘medium’ of art (poetry, music, fiction, paintings, statues etc.) is the most touching to you? why do you think that is? My favorite art is the written word only because it's the most absorbing and wonderful and sustained artform, but I don't actually find it moving most of the time. Really (really) good acting can get me, sometimes, as can music; acting because it's a real human being stood before you (convincingly & profoundly) in despair or elation etc; and music because it's magic, I suppose.

jasmine ⇢ do you have a movie or book you loved but will never watch/read again? What an interesting question! There are certainly books I loved as a child that I have no desire to read now. But I can't think of anything about which I would proclaim "NEVER!" absolutely and deliberately.

chamomile ⇢ what kind of things do you like receiving as gifts? Food, letters, cards. I've kept all the cards and letters I've ever got.

aloe vera ⇢ what’s something (mundane) you really want to experience in life? OH, I would love (l o v e) to lead the most boring practical provincial nobody life imaginable, dedicating myself to me and my own. I think nothing would give me more joy. I would love to grow a garden with someone and read books to my kids at bedtime and live well.

palm tree ⇢ do you have a fictional villain you shouldn’t like but love regardless? I'm rather fond of the baddies in War and Peace.

The soldier wiped some of the blood on the back of his hand and looked at the army doctor. He couldn't believe that this was the person that was expected to save them if he was shot. He was small with a sad look to his large brown eyes, but who wasn't unhappy in this hellscape.

"You're actually the doc and not some student?"

"I need to take your pulse."

"Enlisted or drafted? I want to know if you have a death wish or just shitty luck."

The doctor rolled his eyes, but there was a slight smirk on his face. He didn't say anything but grabbed the solider's arm to check his vitals.

Book asks! 3, 4, 7, 18, and 30!

A poplar book that I love: Genuinely and unabashedly love LOTR, which is probably one of most enduringly popular books out of the past century (others have outsold it in the short-term, but hardly any have in the long) and I wouldn't be surprised if it's amongst the handful that get remembered from our time centuries from now. It is windy, not in that Tolkien is overly-descriptive or flowery at all (which is often the charge) but rather in that he dwells. He wishes to tell the reader about every moment of the journey, including the dull and long and samey moments - but even so, the rewards by the end, and the humanness of it all, are extremely hard to beat.

A poplar book I dislike: Everything I've read by Cormac McCarthy (Border Trilogy, The Road, Blood Meridian, No Country for Old Men, Sunset Limited).

A book that left you feeling overwhelmed with happiness. Any volume of poetry read of a dark, rainy evening.

A book that's well-written that you dislike. Jane Eyre is phenomenally well written, and it's a book I've learned from and that I've read multiple times and know very well, but I'm not a fan. I don't hate it. I don't even "actively" dislike it - I just certainly don't like it, and my feelings are on the wrong side of neutral.

A fictional book that taught you about/increased your interest in a real-life subject. Life and Fate! taught me a great deal about WWII that I'd never got out of reading non-fiction about the War. It also enormously and pretty much single-handedly piqued my interest in WWII.
